Xbox 360 Price Cut on August 8th – In Time for Halo 3!

This article was written on July 25, 2007 by CyberNet.

Xbox 360 Halo 3 ModCome August 8th the Xbox 360 might be seeing a $50 price cut! Both Hollywood Reporter and Xbox Scene are reporting the news, although Xbox Scene wasn’t given the details on the amount of the price drop.

There was also no reference as to which models would get their prices slashed. I would guess that it would be across the board, which would mean that the Core model would go from $299 to $249, the Pro model would go from $399 to $349, and the Elite model would go from $479 to $429. For the sake of having nice numbers we’ll guess that the Elite model will actually drop down to $399. :)

So why would Microsoft possibly be dropping the price? I’m guessing one of the reasons is that it will put the Core model at the same price as the Nintendo Wii, which will be appealing to families looking to purchase a cheap console. I’m guessing the other reason that they are looking to drop the price is to prepare for the launch of Halo 3 on September 25th. This game is sure to attract new Xbox 360 owners, and with a reduced price on the system it is almost like you get the game for free.

I think I’d rather pick up a Wii, but Halo 3 would be quite fun to play with some friends.

Zune May Actually Be Dead

zunes.jpg

After years of sluggish sales and a new Microsoft mobile platform that aims to make the Zune irrelevant, it appears Microsoft has officially ordered the end of production of Zune hardware.

According to a Bloomberg report, the music player is officially dead but the Zune name may live on. Windows Phone 7’s operating system interface looks quite similar to the Zune, and Microsoft also offers a “Zune” music service on the Xbox 360.

The days of dedicated music players are numbered.

Internet Explorer 9 launches tonight, we’ve got your early look (update: it’s live)

Yes, we know it’s PI day, but don’t tell the guys and gals at Microsoft — we hear they’re celebrating something a little different. That’s right, the long-awaited IE9 browser is finally coming out of its beta and RC stage, and will be hitting the global download airways this evening at 9PM PT, which is midnight here on the East Coast. Microsoft tells us the .exe file will be available for you to download at those times right from www.beautyoftheweb.com — but should you? Obviously, the RC release has been out for awhile, but we’ve spent the last day or so using the final build and we have to say if you’re a PC user it’s definitely worth a test drive. Hit the break to find out why we think so.

Update: The download has gone live, go grab it at the source link below!

Get 35% Off of eBay Purchases via Microsoft’s Cashback

This article was written on June 17, 2008 by CyberNet.

If you couldn’t tell by now, we’re all about saving a buck whenever we can. That’s why we told you about how you could get 10% off of eBay purchases through Microsoft’s Cashback program. We’re going to bring it up once more, only because they’ve sweetened the deal. Now when you search for certain items, you’ll see a link to get 35% off your purchase.

Razr - Live Search.png

We decided to go to Live Search and search for the Razr once more, and sure enough we saw the link to get up to 35% off of a purchase if you pay with PayPal. The key is that not all items are going to return the 35% offer. Some ads will still show 10% off so you just need to play around and search for different items. Aside from Razr, searching for “Cheap Xbox” also worked.

Once you see the ad, click on it and you’ll be taken to eBay. Once there you can go and search for most anything and still get the 35% percent off. When you think about it, that’s pretty significant. A $300 item would be $195 and a $200 item would be $130. If you have something in mind you need to purchase from eBay anyways, this is a great deal.

Note: This offer is available only to U.S. residents.

Report: Microsoft Lays Unsuccessful Zune to Rest

Released in 2009, Microsoft's Zune HD packs an OLED screen, HD radio and HD video-out. Photo: Jon Snyder/Wired.com

By Peter Bright, Ars Technica

Bloomberg is reporting that Microsoft will cease development of its family of Zune-branded music players due to weak demand and a desire to focus on its smartphone platform.

Zune will live on as a software-and-services platform, according to Bloomberg’s source. Windows Phone 7 embeds the Zune player for media playback on the phone, uses the Zune Marketplace for online music sales, and the Zune PC software for media syncing and firmware updates. These uses will be unhindered by the cancellation of the standalone Zune hardware.

Since their introduction in 2006, the Zune players always played second fiddle — with that — to Apple’s iPod line. The 2009 Zune HD model was a well-received, well-designed, and supremely elegant device, but was a case of too little, too late. It was competing against Apple’s iPod touch, with its enormous App Store advantage.

Microsoft also did little to promote the Zune brand beyond US borders. The original models were also available in Canada, but until recently, the Zune HD was U.S.-only. As a result, Microsoft failed to threaten Apple’s dominance, leaving Cupertino to take 77 percent of the digital music player market last year.

Over the past couple of months rumors have been swirling around that Zune would either be killed off or rebranded, and Microsoft has yet to officially confirm the hardware’s demise. The apparent decision to cancel the standalone hardware may be the fact behind the rumors, or this could be the first step in a complete overhaul and rebranding of the platform, possibly codenamed “Ventura.” The decision to end Zune hardware production also means that it’s unlikely that Microsoft will ever mimic Apple and produce an iPod touch equivalent for Windows Phone 7 — the phone platform without the phone part.

Microsoft reportedly kills off Zune hardware, will focus on software instead

Details are still emerging on this one, but it looks like Microsoft has finally killed off the Zune — or the hardware side of things, anyway. According to Bloomberg, a “person familiar with the decision” has confirmed that Microsoft won’t be producing any new Zune media players, and that the company will instead focus solely on the Zune software that already has a foothold on the Xbox 360 and Windows Phone devices (it’s not clear if the name will stick around). Microsoft will apparently continue to sell its existing Zunes as long as it has stock of them. More as we get it.

Google Quickly Becoming the Next Microsoft

This article was written on August 01, 2007 by CyberNet.

Google next microsoftRemember back in April when Google announced that they were acquiring DoubleClick, and Microsoft said “not so fast” and protested the move saying it would hurt competition? Then what did Microsoft do? They acquired online advertising firm aQuantitive, and more recently, they announced they were acquiring an advertising exchange firm called AdECN as well. They weren’t the only major Internet Company with an advertising related purchase either. AOL recently announced their acquisition of TACODA, and Yahoo announced they were acquiring Right Media. All of the major Internet Companies are getting in on advertising, yet Google seems to be the only one under scrutiny for the intention of their purchase.

I think Ars Technica’s article title perfectly describes what Google is thinking right now: “Google on DoubleClick merger: Everyone else is doing it, why can’t we?” Ain’t that the truth! An article recently published on the official Google Public Policy Blog essentially says that everybody is in fact doing it, so why can’t we, without actually saying that. They point out all of the other advertising related acquisitions lately and explain that “each of the leading Internet companies believe that they can position themselves to succeed in the online advertising space — through the free market, and without government intervention.”

So why is it that Google has to fight to finalize the acquisition of DoubleClick? I think the answer is simple. Google is becoming the next Microsoft and everybody is screaming ANTITRUST! When Microsoft became dominant is when they were criticized and had to fight to do what they wanted. It seems Google is now quickly entering the same position that Microsoft has been in where everything that they do is looked over with a magnifying glass, checked, and rechecked. With Google growing faster than a weed, I think they need to prepare for many trips to Washington in the future with lobbyists in tow, to fight for what they want to do. Without a doubt, Google is quickly becoming the next Microsoft whether they like it or not.

Gates and Jobs Together Again, Watch the Full Video

This article was written on May 31, 2007 by CyberNet.

Bill Gates and Steve Jobs

There are some big things going on at the D Conference, with the highlight being the meeting of Steve Jobs and Bill Gates for a chat conducted by Walt Mosberg and Kara Swisher. Before I get to talking about the main event, lets take a look at some of the other things that had been going on there.

Steve Jobs had some one-on-one time with Mossberg where he refused to say if there was anything new in the iPhone that hadn’t already been revealed. Jobs did say that it was shipping late June, and he nodded in agreement when asked if that meant the last day in June.

Then there is the Steve Ballmer interview who does one of those oh so cool “gun clicks” (like Fonzie) when complimented on having one of the best selling brown devices on the market. Later on they go through a demonstration of the Microsoft Surface table that was just announced by Microsoft.

Now on to the main spectacle…Bill Gates and Steve Jobs together once again! A lot of people were there, such as Engadget, who provided live coverage of the event. In my opinion, rare things like this cannot be captured in words. Below you’ll find several video segments from the actual interview, but first I’ll briefly talk about what each part includes (in case you don’t want to sit through more than an hour of footage. It is pretty entertaining though!).

Prologoue (7 minutes): This has all of the clips from when Jobs and Gates previously met, including the Apple Dating Game show! It’s pretty funny and I highly recommend it!

Part 1 (15 minutes): This first part is mostly Jobs and Gates coming on to the stage, and then looking back over the course of their history. The best part was at the end when Jobs quotes former Apple CEO Gil Amelio, who said “Apple is like a ship with a whole in the bottom, leaking water, and my job is to get the ship pointed in the right direction.”

Part 2 (11 minutes): They discuss the art of the Mac vs. PC commercials, where Jobs says that the point of the commercials is for Mac and PC’s to like eachother. Gates looked a little perplexed at that. They then go on to talk about the Zune and iPod.

Part 3 (15 minutes): Jobs and Gates talk about the things they regret. This segment was a little boring as they talk about what they expect for the future, but they beat around the bush too much.

Part 4 (8 minutes): Discussion continues on the future of devices (more specifically 5-years from now), and Jobs discusses how they try to partner with more people rather than create everything themselves.

Part 5 (11 minutes): Where are the companies going graphically? Mossberg says that the graphics for both Vista and Mac OS aren’t all that different from 10-years ago.

Part 6 (4 minutes): What’s the biggest mis-understanding between the Microsoft and Apple…Jobs says that they’ve kept their marriage a secret for over a decade! Gates is then left speechless. Jobs concludes it with almost a sentimental quote describing their relationship.

This concludes the chat with the interviewers, and now they are moving on to questions from the audience.

Part 7 (19 minutes): Gates and Jobs answer some of the questions the audience has. About 12 minutes and 30 seconds into it they discuss what they’ve learned from watching each other.

Now here are all the videos. They don’t really require all of your attention, so you could probably just listen to them in the background while you get some other work done:

Xbox 360 IPTV rumors ride again with ‘Project Orapa’

Just because Microsoft’s Mediaroom IPTV service is finally supported on the Xbox 360 after years and years of expectations (as seen above) doesn’t mean the rumor mill stops, with rumors surfacing of a “Project Orapa” that reportedly combines Xbox Live, Kinect and IPTV service all in one. ZDNet’s Mary Jo Foley has heard from tipsters that it’s related to the previously rumored Ventura multimedia project and will let subscribers to Mediaroom powered IPTV services like U-Verse use Kinect’s gesture and voice recognition like ESPN3 already does to control their TV experience while Xbox users would get “more content.” We should find out how much of this is reality and how it ties into previous rumors pretty quickly, since it’s apparently going to be in testing this month, and available by the upcoming holiday season.
