Firefox 7 now officially available, promises ‘significantly’ reduced memory usage

A new version number for a browser release may not be quite as major as it used to be, but Mozilla is promising a few fairly big improvements with the just-released Firefox 7. The biggest of those are all in the performance department, including “significantly” reduced memory usage (up to 50 percent less in some cases), and a new version of the hardware-accelerated Canvas that promises to speed up HTML5 sites. Also making its debut is a new Telemetry feature that lets users anonymously provide browser performance data to Mozilla if they choose to opt-in. Hit the links below for the complete rundown and download link.

Nokia N9 begins shipping at not inexpensive prices

After months of rumors and pre-orders, the Nokia N9 has finally begun shipping. Today, the Finnish manufacturer announced that its Meego-drenched handsets are now available for consumption, in both 16GB and 64GB variants. Of course, those of us in the US are out of luck, as are those in Germany and the UK (barring any back-door wizardry), but everyone else can grab a 16GB model for the not-so-small price of €480 (about $650), or the 64GB version for the similarly steep price of €560 (roughly $757). Pricing and availability, of course, will vary by region, but you can find more details in the full press release after the break, or at the source link, below.

Boeing officially delivers 787 Dreamliner to ANA, future of air travel finally arrives

It’s the plane so nice, they unveiled it twice. Boeing once again presented its long-awaited and much-delayed 787 Dreamliner to client All Nippon Airways, but this time the goods were officially delivered. After taking the wraps off the airliner early this August, the aerospace company managed to get a flight-ready unit over to its Everett, Washington production plant for a celebratory hand-off. Despite a fit of stops and starts for the line’s rollout, Boeing expects to meet ANA’s order of its future 55-strong fleet, producing an additional 20 craft for the Japanese airline by 2013’s end. If you want to be among the select few to call “First!,” you might want to consider booking that Japan-bound vacation now.

Samsung Galaxy S WiFi 5.0 gets priced, goes on sale in UK

Sure, it may not be as exciting as those two LTE beasts from Samsung that we saw earlier today, but the Galaxy S WiFi 5.0 has crept on sale in the land of crumpets, Coldplay and some Middleton couple (we jest!). According to reviews on Amazon UK, it appears a lucky few have already got their hands on one, but they’re now available en masse; expect to fork out just shy of £200 ($310) for the five-inch media player. The Galaxy S WiFi 5.0 already feels a bit smaller after seeing the giant 5.3-inch Galaxy Note in action, and the software is a bit dated, arriving with Froyo-flavored Android. There’s no news about a Gingerbread update hitting this one just yet (though we’ve been told it’s upgradable), but Android 2.2 should be more than enough to tackle its veritable smorgasbord of app-based delights, alongside some smartphone-esque tech specs like Bluetooth and, naturally, WiFi.

[Thanks, Cliff]

Texas Instruments wraps up purchase of National Semiconductor

TI <3's National SemiconductorIn April, Texas Instruments announced its intention to snatch up National Semiconductor for a cool $6.5 billion. Now, almost six months later, the acquisition is complete and TI can tack another few percentage points on to its already market-leading chunk of the analog chip market. At least for now, National will operate as a branch of TI’s analog division, which now accounts for over 50-percent of the company’s revenue, and keep its (reasonably) well known brand name alive. For a few more details on the deal, check out the PR after the break.

Samsung opens ‘most advanced’ 20nm-class flash memory production line

Samsung’s “20nm-class” designations for flash memory production are frustratingly nonspecific, but smallest processes or not it’s ready to crank out more chips than ever. Reuters reports the electronics giant just flipped the switch on its first new production line in five years, one that it’s calling “the industry’s largest and most advanced memory fabrication facility.” It could take up to nine months to get fully up to speed, but the increased production and reduced costs should keep the competition coming Samsung’s way for storage no matter what their current legal situation.

Hulu Plus cracks one million paying subscribers, but what’s next?

It’s almost the official end of summer and just as CEO Jason Kilar forecasted back in July, Hulu has signed up more than 1,000,000 paying Plus subscribers. He made the announcement at a Goldman Sachs investor conference while also mentioning plans to invest $375 million in content this year, even as the questions of who will buy Hulu (if its owners actually follow through with a sale) and Kilar’s own fate as its head continue to hang in the air. Hitting the projected numbers, rolling out service internationally and popping up at the f8 Facebook event are all signs Hulu is still making plans for its future, even if we don’t know yet where that future will be.

Evoz Baby Monitor lets you spy on your kid from anywhere your iPhone gets a signal

Worried that your bundle of joy might get up to no good during your weekly Hatha class? Not with this monolith by his bedside, he won’t. It’s called the Evoz Baby Monitor and it takes its job very seriously. All you have to do is place this WiFi-enabled device next to Junior’s crib, download Evoz’ app on your iPhone and the monitor will automatically provide you with alerts (via text, e-mail or phone call) whenever your kid cries. Once you sync this watchdog with your phone, you can even use it to remotely listen in on your prince, just in case he utters his first words while you’re out on the links. Best of all, the system isn’t restricted to a fixed range and promises to work in any area where you’ve got cellular coverage — whether that be in the backyard, at the gym, or at Child Protective Services. Evoz won’t start shipping the Baby Monitor until October 4th, but gravely concerned parents can pre-order one now for $120, at the source link below. Otherwise, just crawl past the break for more information, in the full PR.

QNX shows off its versatility, powers OnStar accessories as well as floundering tablets

OnStar

Back in April of 2010, RIM snatched up a little known property called QNX, which primarily powered in-car infotainment systems. As we all know, that little OS eventually became the platform on which the PlayBook was built — but QNX hasn’t left the dashboard behind completely. Turns out the software inside OnStar’s FMV, which went on sale in July, is actually QNX’s Neutrino RTOS. Why are we only finding out about it now? Who knows, but maybe there’s some sweet BlackBerry and OnStar integration coming once RIM puts QNX in phones. Check out the PR after the break.

Splashtop Remote Desktop now available for Mac OS X, costs but $10

Not content with creating the possibility of (emulated) Wii gaming on Android tablets, Splashtop continues to spread itself across pretty much anything with a screen, with a Mac-friendly version available now at the Mac App Store. This release allows both Mac OS X 10.6 and Windows to hold hands across the great OS divide — nice to see Splashtop is still beavering away at its “Bridge to Anywhere.” Desktop access to both your most intimate files and programs — through both local networks and the internet at large — are but a $9.99 payment away.
