This Week’s Best YouTube Videos: Beautiful Voices, Ugly Rats, and an X-Wing Fighter

Just Press EnterA lot of people paid attention to the way things sounded on YouTube this week. From a little girl with a soaring voice to the smooth to the silky sounds of Ted Williams (see last week’s YouTube roundup,) some of the most popular videos on YouTube this week were the sounds of other people. On the flip side though, another one of the week’s popular videos was a sewer rat running about on the New York subway. You have to hand it to New Yorkers – they don’t even flinch when he runs their way.

To help you, we took a look at the most-buzzed-about trends and picked 10 you may have missed this week.

Here are the top trending Twitter topics for the week ending on January 14:

1. Representative Giffords Shooting
Via WhatTheTrend.com:

US Congresswoman Gabby Giffords was shot in Tucson, Arizona last Saturday by suspected gunman Jared Lee Loughner. The rampage killed 6 and wounded 13. Giffords is still in critical condition, recovering from a bullet wound to the brain. In the aftermath, many individuals and news organizations placed the blame for the violence at what they saw as overheated political rhetoric, particularly from the right, though there is no evidence yet that caused Loughner’s actions. The person facing the most criticism was former Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin, who had distributed a map during the recent midterm election with crosshairs (later termed “surveyor’s marks”) over Democratic districts, including Giffords.

3. tYp3 LyK tHi5
According to the all-knowing Wikipedia,
“Alay” style is ‘a form of the Indonesian language that has undergone “excessive leet transformation”. Contrary to the popular belief that it is “destroying” the national language, grammatical standards are met in contrast to the modern Indonesian slang language. Similar to the jejebets, alay texts offer an alternative in compressing words so that they are under the 160 character-limit in text messages, often to the point that they are impossible to read. Rules in capitalization are mostly ignored.'”

ZDNet Blogger Disappears Under Mysterious Circumstances

Dancho_Danchev.jpg

ZDNet Blogger Dancho Danchev has been missing in since August. The security writer disappeared mysteriously in his native Bulgaria. Some information about his disappearance has surfaced, and fellow Zero Watch blogger Ryan Naraine fittingly refers to it as “troubling.”

The company has reportedly made several failed attempts to contact Danchev, who wrote his last post for the blog on August 18. A source in Bulgaria wrote ZDNet last month to report that “Dancho’s alive but he’s in a lot of trouble.”

Danchev, for his part, wrote the aforementioned “troubling” letter to a fellow member of the security community,

As I consider you as a trusted colleague, and someone who understands the big picture of cyber crime and cyber espionage, I’m attaching you photos of the “current situation in my bathroom”, courtesy of Bulgarian Law enforcement+intell services who’ve been building a case trying to damage my reputation.

The letter includes images of what may be a monitoring device installed in his home. Zero Day is asking for any information anyone might have on Danchev’s disappearance.

Skeleton Key USB Drive Stores 2GB, Won’t Open Locks

Fredflare Skeleton KeyKey-shaped USB drives are fairly popular lately. LaCie’s iamaKey flash drive looks like something that would fit right in on your keychain next to your house or car key, but the Fredflare Skeleton Key takes a more whimsical approach, and looks a little more fun sticking out of one of your computer’s USB ports.

The Skeleton Key comes in three colors: white, black, and pink, and only one size: 2GB. It’s available now directly from the manufacturer, and retails for $58 USD.

CyberDefender Promises to Protect Against STDs

What’s the point of working at a security software company if you can’t laugh at yourself, right? I have to admit, I was a bit thrown by CyberDefender’s latest campaign–that’s what I get for skimming my e-mails… The company promises to protected against STDs–just in time for Valentine’s Day.

Turns out that “STD” is security software guy slang for a “search transmitted diseases.” Naturally, the company is taking the joke to its logical conclusion. “These unprotected searches can result in infection by viruses or malware and lost data. We’ve all been there (and are equally ashamed to admit it!).”

Ew. Well, anything to avoid that painful burning sensation when I download….

Virginia Voting on Plan to Ban Teacher, Student Facebook Friending

the graduate.jpg

Virginia doesn’t want its teachers to be friends with students–not on Facebook. The state’s public school system is voting on a new rule titled “Proposed Guidelines for the
Prevention of Sexual Misconduct & Abuse in Virginia Public Schools,” which would ban extra curricular communication between students and teachers, including texting and Facebook friending.

According to the proposed rule, communication between students and teachers would be restricted specifically to school sanctioned communication platforms. Communication via texting and “personal online social-networking sites” is banned altogether. Teachers “must decline or disregard invitations from students” to join social networks.

If the teacher has to contact a student through one of these methods in the case of an emergency, all communication must be reported to a school supervisor. Online gaming with students is also out of the question, under these new rules.

Laptop Stolen, May Have Cured Cancer

couple cancer laptop.jpg

How many times do we have to tell you to back up your data people? Let this serve as an object lesson–two leading cancer researchers at Oklahoma University had their computer stolen recently.

It may have contained the cure for prostate cancer–or, at the very least, some vital clues in the fight against it. Sook Shin and her husband Ralf Jankecht had years of data on the thing. And no, they didn’t back up. Sin told the press, “I’m so devastated, and I feel so guilty.”

The couple is offering $1,000 for the safe return of their 13 inch Macbook, which was stolen from their Jetta parked outside of an Oklahoma-area Panera Bread, after a thief broke the window and stole a computer bag containing the computer.

“Please return the computer with the data saved,” added Jankecht. “This would tremendously help us and you would do something for society.”

Pink Genitals Removed From Snowman After Police Called

frosty.jpg

A 45-year-old South Carolina resident agreed to remove a set of dyed-pink male genitals from a snowman, after being confronted by local police.

The man was confronted by a deputy from South Carolina’s Union Country after building the too anatomically correct winter symbol. The man insisted that he ought to be able to build the snowman, pink genitals and all, so long as it was located on his private property. The police disagreed, threatening to arrest him, should the genitals stay in place.

The man complied, promptly removing said pink snow genitals.
