New Facebook Profile No longer Optional

FBNewProfile.jpg

Back in December, Facebook introduced its new profile to the world. The new profile features: an info summary at the top of your profile, a row of recently tagged photos, the ability to highlight friendships, more of your favorite activities and interests, and the ability to tag your friends in life experiences. On its blog, Facebook said, the new profile “makes it even easier for you to tell your story and learn about your friends” and that “hundreds of millions” already made the switch.

Until now, the change to the new profile was optional, but that time has passed. Starting today, Facebook is rolling out the new profile to the everyone. No more option. And the “Bring the old profile back!”, “Stop changing things!”, “The new profile sucks!” madness ensues. Love it or hate it, it’s here to stay…until the next upgrade.

New Sega Game Powered By Pee

toylet.png

Thanks to Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft, we’ve seen plenty of innovation as of as of late, when it comes to gaming devices. But the Wiimote, PlayStation Move, Kinect, and even the 3DS all pale in comparison to the sheer breakthrough innovation that Sony is offering the world with its latest invention–the Toylet.

The new technology is urinal-based, challenging players/pee-ers to compete in four different urine-based mini-games while doing their business. The games included pee quantifier “Manneken Pis;” image eliminator “Graffiti Eraser;” “The North Wind and Her,” in which the player attempts to lift a woman’s dress with his urine; and “Milk From Nose,” which pits two milk-squirting sumo wrestlers against one another.

The games have been installed in four Japanese metro stations, where they’ll be up in a test run until the 31st. The games also include a USB port, so player can download their high scores to a flash drive. But please, wash your hands when you’re finished.

No Pants Subway Ride 2011: Around 3,500 Riders in NYC

No Pants Subway Ride 2011.jpeg

Merry Internet pranksters Improv Everywhere pulled off another successful No Pants Subway ride this weekend. Not quite CES numbers, but according to initial estimates from the group, some 3,500 New Yorkers participated in the event, removing their bottoms and enjoying all that our city’s wonderful public transportation system has to offer–quite the feat, given the fact that it never got any warmer than 32 degrees.

Events were also held in 50 other cities in 24 countries, from chilly Minneapolis to the far more pleasant São Paulo. Video from last year’s event after the jump.

This Week’s Best YouTube Videos: Brick Thieves, Ringing in the New Year, and More

London - New Years Fireworks

It’s the first weekend of the new year, and some of the best videos on YouTube this week had to do with the New Year – celebrations around the world, festivities near and far, and in particular the fireworks display in the skies over London were particularly amazing – they give new (or perhaps restore) meaning to the word “epic.”
Aside from ringing in the New Year, this week saw the release of a fantastic short film all about Lego, a dog that wasn’t about to waste an opportunity to go sledding, and a very happy penguin.

Twitter’s Top Trending Topics of the Week: New Year’s, Huck Finn, and the Culkin/Kunis Breakup

mila-kunis-macaulay-culkin-break-up__oPt.jpgThe Consumer Electronics Showcase took up much of the tech buzz this week. If you were too entrenched in all of this week’s tablet news and missed out on all the other things in which normal, non-geeky people, were talking about, we can help. We took a look at some of the most talked-about topics on Twitter this week so that you can pretend you were keeping up with things other than tech-product announcements. Trust us, all but No. 10 on the list was news to us.

CES: HyperMac Starts Selling Batteries Again with Connector Kits for Mac

CES - HyperMac - iPod Battery

The HyperMac/HyperJuice legal saga started in September when Apple sued the company for using and selling its MagSafe and iPod Dock Connector power adapters with their external battery packs. Things got interesting when, as part of a deal to avoid a drawn-out legal battle with Apple, the company decided to rebrand to HyperJuice instead and stop selling the battery packs entirely in November.
Today, Sanho Corporation (parent company of HyperMac) CEO Daniel Chin announced that HyperMac is back, selling their external battery packs again, and offering two new ways for buyers to connect their battery packs to their MacBook, MacBook Pro, or MacBook Air.
First, each HyperMac battery will include an airline/auto adapter for charging. The adapter will plug directly into Apple’s own airline MagSafe adapter, which users will have to buy directly from Apple if they want to use this method. The second option is to purchase a HyperMac battery with a DIY kit that allows you to transform an Apple power adapter into one that can be used to connect the battery to your Mac. Both versions, along with HyperMac’s range of external battery packs, are available for purchase now at HyperMac’s Web site.

Electronic Cigars Are the New Electronic Cigarettes

Electronic Cigars.JPG

I’ve long said that electronic cigarettes are a gateway to other things–things like electronic cigars, perfect for when your wife is going to give birth to a robot baby. I spotted these suckers in the International Hall at CES yesterday.
They function like electronic cigarettes, only larger, with the vaporizer for “smoke” and optional flavoring and nicotine. This set was made by a Chinese company called Feellife Bioscience International. Their mascot is a pirate skeleton with octopus legs. Terrifying.
The company also makes an electronic pipe, which sort of explains the Sherlock Holmes box that also made it into my picture.

Mac App Store Hits One Million Downloads First Day

macappstore_main2.jpg

Today, Apple announced that over one million apps have been downloaded from the Mac App Store in the first day. Apparently, Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard users jumped on the chance to get some of the more than1,000 free and paid apps for their Macs. You can choose from apps in Education, Games, Graphics & Design, Lifestyle, Productivity, Utilities and other categories.

“We’re amazed at the incredible response the Mac App Store is getting,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “Developers have done a great job bringing apps to the store and users are loving how easy and fun the Mac App Store is.”

Speakal Unveils Phone/Computer Hybrid Devices at CES

Speakal BTS8

Speakal is more commonly known for their iPhone and iPod Docks, including the iPig and the Cool iPig, but they had a surprise in store for CES this year: the BTS8 Phone/Personal Computer Hybrid. The BTS8 is essentially a standard office phone with a 5-inch display (which can be connected to an external monitor) that runs Windows 7 and, according to Speakal, “doubles as a personal computer.”
The BTS8 comes with Windows 7 pre-installed, has an on-board Webcam and can do videoconferencing using Skype, and can even receive faxes, SMS messages, and play music or movies and let you surf the Web when you’re not busy taking calls.
Admittedly businesses aren’t likely to start replacing their laptops with phone/PC hybrids just yet, and I can only imagine how difficult it would be to deal with making sure your phone doesn’t get hacked, but Speakal hopes businesses will bite. Pricing and availability were not announced.

Record Number of Tweets Per Second Sent on New Years Eve

twitter_NYE_japan.png10, 9, 8, 7… quick, get out your phone at tweet “Happy New Year” to all your followers before the ball drops! If you found yourself tweeting your New Year’s wishes instead of kissing your boyfriend, hugging your friends, or calling your mom as we entered 2011, you’re not alone. According to the Twitter Blog, just four seconds after midnight in Japan on January 1, an all-time record number of Tweets sent per second (TPS) was set as 6,939 TPS were sent.

The East coast time zone alone reached its peak of 3,000 TPS, which is almost more than the entire world sent during the peak moment of the World Cup. Twitter made a video which visualizes New Year’s Eve tweet data across the world. The circles get larger as more tweets are sent at that moment. It’s a neat because you can actually see the different amounts of tweets in each time zone as each one hits midnight.
