Zuckerberg’s Pre-Facebook Domain Sells for $30,000

Domain names are the new used cars. Really, there’s no better way to own a piece of your favorite celebrity in the early 21st century than by snatching up their old domain names. It’s hard imagine anyone buying a domain like Facemash.com for $35,000, were it not the former domain of an Internet billionaire.

Mark Zuckerberg launched Facemash.com in 2003–the site was something of a Harvard-specific version of Hot or Not. He soon let the domain lapse, after moving on to bigger and better things.

The person who bought the site post-Zuck recently put it up on the auction block with a Buy it Now price of $35,000. While the asking price seemed pretty lofty, Facemash pulled in nearly that amount, raking in $30,201 after 10 bids in 20 days. The buyer is anonymous, but Rahul Jain, the former owner says that no one at Facebook or Sony (the studio behind The Social Network) was behind the bid.

Jain says that part of the winning bid will go to Indian education non-profit, the the Dakshana Foundation.

In China, One Tweet can Cost You a Year in a Labor Camp

chinatwitter.png

China, the worst country in the world*, recently sentenced a 46-year-old woman one year in a labor camp for a sarcastic tweet. Or as they call it “disturbing social stability.”

Back in October, Cheng Jianping under the twitter wangyi09, RT’d a post from her fiance Hua Chunhu with a few words of editorializing. The post mocked Chinese protesters who smashed Japanese products during a recent demonstration.

Eleven days later, on the day the couple planned to marry, Ha Chunchi was taken away by police from his office. He was released five days later, only to find that Cheng was missing. Family members told him the police had taken her away the same day they came for him. She was sentenced to a year in the Henan Province labor camp.

In her twitter feed, Cheng has also supported imprisoned Nobel Peace Prize laureate Liu Xiaobo.

* There are certainly more dangerous totalitarian regimes out there, but China is the only one who is a true emerging super power. One which has a near-unbreakable symbiotic economic relationship with the West. One which national American politicians refuse to publicly condemn due to the sheer amount of economic debt China holds. If China wants to be a true global player, they are  going to have to break away from their backwater mental shackles and grow up. This is some unnecessary third-world stuff.

Reverend: No Facebook After Marriage

wedding-cake-topper_phones.jpg

Are social networking sites like MySpace and Facebook a threat to marriage in the 21st century? Reverend Cedric Miller of New Jersey’s Living Word Christian Fellowship Church thinks so.

He blames the marriage troubles of 20 couples in his 1,100 member church on Facebook. According to the pastor, a spouse in each of the couple re-connected with and old love interest through the site in the past year.

“I’ve been in extended counseling with couples with marital problems because of Facebook for the last year and a half,” Miller told The Associated Press. “What happens is someone from yesterday surfaces, it leads to conversations and there have been physical meet-ups. The temptation is just too great.”

The reverend is telling his married officials to either quit social networking altogether or resign from their posts. It’s Miller’s latest move in his battle against the social network. In the past, he has recommended that married members of his congregation quit Facebook or turn their passwords over to their spouse.

Miller himself is both married and on Facebook. He says that he uses the site to keep in touch with his children. He plans on deleting his account this weekend.

Facebook Traffic Jumps 55 Percent in a Year

Thumbnail image for Mark Zuckerberg.jpg

Is Facebook plateauing? Hardly. The social networking giant
continued its quest for global domination, growing 55 percent in the past year,
according to comScore’s numbers. The site jumped from 97.37 million uniques in the
U.S. in October
2009 to 151.13 million.

The social network is the number two site in the U.S.,
just behind Google’s 173.3 million uniques. It boasts some 500 million members
globally, making it second place site in the world (again, behind Google).

Julian Assange Targeted By Arrest Warrant Over Rape, Molestation Charges

julian-assange.jpg

Julian Assange has landed himself in the crosshairs of plenty of governments and coporations, thanks to his site WikiLeaks.org, but it may be something else entirely that takes the Australian Internet activist down. Sweden has issued an international warrant for Assange’s arrest over allegations of rape, molestation, and “unlawful coercion.”

Assange has denied the allegations of two women after a visit to that country in August, calling the event consensual. His lawyer called the accusations “false and without basis.”

Swedish Director of Public Prosecution, Marianne Ny, is looking to arrest Assange via Interpol, after her original request was rejected by a Swedish District Court. Assange met the women at a Stockholm seminar on August 14. The women filed joint complaints six days later.

“Only after the women became aware of each other’s relationships with Mr Assange did they make their allegations against him,” Assange’s lawyer told AP.

The investigation was opened on August 20th, dropped a day later, and then picked up by Ny after a week. Assange’s lawyers believe that there’s not enough evidence to convict him.

Did MySpace Friend Facebook?

MySpace_Overhaul.jpg

The Hatfield and the McCoys. Coke and Pepsi. Maggie Simpson
and that baby with one eyebrow. Some rivalries are just timeless. It seems
that, no matter what happens, they’ll never be resolved. I’d have put Facebook
and MySpace on that list, as well–until today, that is.

It seems like the two sites that have been so long at each
other’s throats in the race for social networking dominance may finally be
resolving their differences–well, some of them, at least…

Word has it that the two sites are teaming up for a joint
announcement later today (at 12:00 PM PT).
Facebook and MySpace sent out e-mails last night to members of the tech
community announcing the event involving MySpace CEO Mike Jones and Dan Rose, Facebook’s
VP of partnerships and platform marketing.

No word on the specifics, but rumor has it that the
partnership involves the implementation of Facebook Connect on MySpace, in an
attempt for the once-dominant social network to recapture some users.

MySpace has been struggling in recent years to compete with
Facebook, having launched a much-needed site redesign late last month.

Girl’s Severed Hand Reattached to Her Leg–for Three Months

550w_odd_foot_hand.jpg

Nine-year old Ming Li was on her way to school in her rural Chinese village when she was run over by a tractor. She survived, but the accident severed her left hand. Her doctors thought that the hand could be saved, but the arm was too damaged for reattachment. So, they (yeefk!) grafted the hand on to her calf in order to keep it alive.

And there it stayed for three months (!) as her arm underwent a few months of repair and healing.

Finally, doctors transferred the hand from the girl’s calf to her arm. According to the Zhoukou Evening Post the girl can move her wrist and the hand is a “healthy pink color,” meaning that the blood is circulating well.

Doctors believe that with some additional surgery and therapy the girl will regain full use of her hand.

So, it has a happy ending! So, we don’t have to feel too bad about being completely grossed out.
