iOS 5 will be available October 12, iCloud launching the same day

Mark your calendars, kids. Scott Forstall’s on stage here at “Let’s Talk iPhone” and just gave a hard date for iOS 5’s arrival: expect it to hit next week, on October 12th, with Apple’s iCloud service launching that same day. Though developers have been playing with it for four months now, this will be the first time the general, non-tinkering public gets to taste its 200-plus new features — a list that includes Newsstand, Reminders, iMessage, WiFi sync, Find My Friends, split keyboards, AirPlay mirroring for the iPad 2 (and iPhone 4S!) and the Notification Center. (And, you know, greeting cards, if you’re into that sort of thing.) iOS 5 will be free for iPhones, iPads and iPod Touches, while iCloud’s standard 5GB of email / storage will come gratis to folks already using iOS 5 and Lion. Take note that if it’s iTunes Match you’re after (and you live in the states), you’ll have to sit tight a few more weeks yet.

We’ve got at least one completely unexpected announcement from Apple’s Let’s Talk iPhone Event: a new app that sends out greeting cards. For $2.99 within the US and $4.99 internationally, sending a greeting card the old fashioned way is just one click away on your mobile, complete with notifications when your card is mailed. Among the glut of numbers coming out of the Apple keynote today, delaying the reveal of your next iPhone, was a particularly impressive one: 250 million. That’s the number of iOS devices sold. That’s 250 million iPhones and iPads in the wild worldwide, running a grand total of 18 billion apps between them, which have netted developers a whopping $3 billion. That ladies and gentlemen, is nothing to sniff at.

iPhone 4S landing on October 14th according to Apple Store page in Japan

Ginza Apple Store Event

Well, Tim Cook has yet to even take the stage and already the leaks are starting to pour in. It started with a pair of images buried in the Apple store’s HTML code. But, perhaps more telling, was the page for the Ginza, Japan store listing the launch of the iPhone 4S as a featured event starting at 8am on October 14th. While that doesn’t necessarily mean the tweaked iPhone 4 variant will launch everywhere on the same day, it seems a safe bet that the US and UK will be getting in on the action that Friday morning.

Update: Well, that was short lived. The text is gone… for now.

NTT DoCoMo menu translator app hands-on (video)

Have you ever tried to read a Japanese menu? If there aren’t pictures to reference, you’ll likely have a difficult time figuring out what to order — unless you can read Japanese, of course. NTT DoCoMo hopes to improve the dining experience for those of us that can’t tell our ウニ (sea urchin) from our カニ (crab), building an app that can translate any of 9,000 possible menu entries from Japanese into English. It also supports English to Japanese translation, along with Chinese (both Mandarin and Cantonese) and Korean translations as well. The app worked fairly well, occasionally mistaking things like salmon caviar for “a rare part of the pork.” OK, so perhaps there’s a bit more work to be done. Either way, real-time visual language translation is definitely tricky stuff, and could be enormously helpful to travelers once devs figure out how to make it work — and work well. NTT DoCoMo bad breath, body fat and food analyzers hands-on (video)

It’s been a busy year for NTT DoCoMo’s research and development division, with the company presenting a goldmine of future accessories at its CEATEC booth. We’re not seeing anything terribly exciting in the smartphone department, beyond a wider adoption of Android, but from the battery with a 10-minute charge time that we saw yesterday to the bad breath, hunger, body fat and food analyzers that you’ll find below, there are certainly quite a few gadgets worth checking out. We’re bundling a few of them here, so jump past the break for our hands-ons with three different health accessories (including a bad breath analyzer!) and a clever food analyzing app.

Luxury Vertu Constellation T smartphone now packs post-feudal technology

Rich people in poor countries have had to make some terrible sacrifices when choosing a gem-encrusted handset. They’ve generally shopped at Vertu, the Nokia-owned go-to company for such ostentatious purchases, but its range of models has lacked even the most basic smartphone functionality. Now though, a Vertu Constellation T has cropped up at the Bluetooth SIG with distinctly forward-looking specs: a 3.5-inch 640 x 360 AMOLED touchscreen, eight megapixel shooter with twin LED flash, 32GB of onboard storage and an HSPA+ modem. You’ll find some low-res pics after the break, but we fear they might not look expensive enough — bear in mind that Vertu devices fetch an average of $7,000, rising to $27,000 for the ultimate provocation of the masses.

HTC confirms security hole, says patch is incoming

HTC held true to its promise to look into the security vulnerability that surfaced over the weekend, an apparent glitch that allows any app requesting internet access to take a peek at a user account information, GPS location, system logs, and other potentially private data. While HTC assured us that user data isn’t at risk of being harmed by its own software, a third party malware app could exploit the security flaw and cause some trouble. The outfit is already building a patch, and will ship it out in an over the air update after a short testing period with its carrier partners. Until then? HTC recommends steering clear of apps from publishers you don’t trust. Hit the break to see the official statement.
