HTC HD2 runs Windows Phone 7, makes us yearn for more (video)

HTC HD2 owners have been trying to shoehorn Windows Phone 7 onto their hapless devices practically since day one, but it looks like a port won’t make it into the wild before the platform’s formal US launch. That doesn’t mean you should give up hope, however, because one variant seems to be at least partway done, winding its merry way from boot through the splash screen and deep into the speedy UI in a far more convincing video demo than the last one that hit our inbox. Though no apps are actually demonstrated nor so much as a basic phone call (pretty please?), multitouch pinch-to-zoom appears to work just fine, and we’ve little doubt any remaining quirks will be worked out in due time — if not nearly as soon as new HTC HD7 owners migrating from the HD2 might have liked. Video after the break.

Update: Here comes a new, 5-minute video of the purportedly WP7-equipped HD2 (via XDA.cn / Pocketnow), this time side-by-side with the Surround and with expanded functionality — Office, Zune, and more. Video is also, as you might’ve guessed, after the break.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Xbox 360 mod mirrors the infinite regress of adulthood (video)

You inhale deeply and step onto the middle rung of the corporate ladder. You return home dazed, alimony unpaid, dishes piled up like a pie in the sky that turned out to be miles too high. You grab a bag of chips and pull up a seat in front of the Xbox Infinite 360 mod. You crawl inside. Lost in a haze of alcohol soft middle age, you exhale.

Interactive fiction meets interactive typewriter, pilfers the kingdoms of Zork (video)

You are standing in an open field as usual, or perhaps you’re in the darkness, likely to be eaten by a grue, but the words aren’t etching their way into your soul from the familiar computer terminal — they’re on freshly printed paper. Like a player piano, the Automatypewriter lets you play games like Zork by automatically keying in letters via a series of solenoids and fishing line to tell you where you are, and it records your input, too; every time you type “XYZZY” in vain, it’s an Arduino board that sends signals to the text parser, which directs a hollow voice to pity your foolish word. Forget the iPad typewriterthis is old-school. See it in action after the break, or hit the source link for the schematics to build one yourself. Just be sure to install Planetfall, too.

Matt Richardson MacGuyvers a Google Reader pedal out of just these items, zero duct tape (video)

Matt Richardson MacGuyvers a Google Reader pedal out of just these items, zero duct tape (video)

The definition of a good friend is someone who, if you say to them “Gee, I’d really like a foot pedal to advance my overflowing Google Reader feeds,” turns around and builds you one. From scratch. In this way we know that modder Matt Richardson is a good friend, as that’s what he crafted out of a little electric pedal and a disused keyboard (of the Dell variety). It’s not the most complex hack we’ve ever seen, but it is a good one, and he’s happy to show you exactly how to do it in the video below. Oh, and the friend’s response? You can see it for yourself at the end of the embed.

Sony Google TV booted into recovery mode, are we days away from a root? (video)

Sony Google TV booted into recovery mode, are we days away from a root? (video)

If it’s running Android it has a root, and if it has a root some modder will find it. The Sony Google TV is most certainly running a flavor of Google’s little OS and so it too is just waiting to be cracked open. While that hasn’t happened yet, Android Forums and xda-developers member Apeman has managed to get us one step closer. He’s enabled the recovery mode on his device by holding the power button down while plugging it in, presenting a tantalizing “System Update with USB” menu option. What lovely things will this unlock? You’ll have to wait to see — just like us.

Apple TV hacked to run weather app

Well, that didn’t take long. Greenpois0n jailbroke the new Apple TV just yesterday, and PwnageTool 4.1 this afternoon, and we’ve already got what appears to be the first custom software successfully running on the device. As you can see, it’s a simple weather app, designed by a tiny software firm called nitoTV, but it’s a harbinger of things to come when developers get cracking on the Apple TV in earnest. See a picture of nitoTV’s custom launcher after the break, while your subconscious frantically tries to figure out what the four cities in the above pic could possibly have in common.

T-Mobile G2 overclocked to 1.4GHz, starts blitzing benchmarks (video)

T-Mobile G2 overclocked to 1.4GHz, starts blitzing benchmarks (video)

Well now, that didn’t take very long. T-Mobile’s G2 (aka the HTC Vision) has been let off its leash, and there’s no getting it back now. XDA-developers member coolbho3000 has posted his overclock module, which takes an already fast phone and make it considerably more perky. He started at a modest 1GHz, but kept on pushing up to 1.42GHz — though there’s potential to go even higher. All this despite T-Mobile’s attempts at preventing hacking, but certainly seeming to allow allow for a fair bit of tweaking. You can download all you need at the source link, or if you’d rather just live vicariously there’s video proof after the break.

[Thanks, Brandon]

Power mad modder rips the keys out of his Epic 4G, calls it a gamepad (video)

Sometimes a mod is more than just a mod: it’s a manifesto. When Phawx over at BrainLazy decided to take an X-Acto knife to his Epic 4G’s keypad, he knew what he was doing: both challenging Apple’s place in the world of cellphone-based gaming and encouraging other manufacturers to step up to the plate. Although early on in the design process he mocked up some plastic controller pieces to replace the factory keypad altogether, by the time it came to try the thing out he realized that by simply pulling out the unused keys and making a few minor (very minor) cosmetic adjustments he could give his touchscreen handset a gamepad slider more eminently more playable than your Droid’s Game Gripper — and eminently less mythical than your PSP Phone. Video after the break.

ArcadeDock converts Lenovo laptop into retro gaming machine (video)

Dean Liou, the same fellow responsible for the ToiletPC and LovePC, has just concocted what’s likely his most splendorous mod yet. The ArcadeDock Laptop Dock is a half-height arcade machine, complete with a flame job from a dark corner of 1994, a full-on joystick + large button splay and a secret cabinet for a touchpad-equipped keyboard. Put simply, this rig is designed to hold an IdeaPad Y560, and when plugged in and connected via USB, the controls you’re peering at above function exactly as you’d expect them to. Toss on a couple of your favorite ROMs (Street Fighter II, anyone?), grab a Go-Gurt and settle in — a demonstrative video is after the break, and feel free to tap that Lenovo link below if you’d like to vote this mod up above the competition.
