Ben Heck fashions breath-controlled kick pedal for Guitar Hero

Ben Heck‘s at it again, and this time, he’s cobbled together a breath-controlled kick pedal for use with Guitar Hero (or Rock Band, if that’s your flavor) meant for people in wheelchairs, or who don’t have use of their legs, but still want to get in on the rocking action. After tearing apart the kick pedal to expose its piezoelectric sensor, he mods it so that, rather than reacting to physical pressure, it’ll react to air pressure. To get the job done, you’ll need some PVC piping, a hot glue gun, and a drill. Hit the read link for full instructions and video of Ben himself testing out the device!

Puget Systems’ $16K Windows 2008 server

In this world of netbooks, “mini” this and “pico” that, it’s nice to see someone taking things to the opposite extreme. When folks at Puget Systems mentioned that they were working on a “high-end” custom build, Tom’s Hardware asked the logical follow-up question: “how high-end are we talkin’?” Let’s just say that we’d be hard-pressed find someone who wouldn’t be content with this beast: four quad-core 2GHz Opteron processors (that’s a lot of cores!), 32GB of memory, two VelociRaptor hard drives in RAID1, and six 1TB hard drives in RAID 5. Of course, this guy generates a lot of heat: the system boasts both liquid cooling and a ginormous side-mounted radiator — with so much surface area, the fans can be run at a low speed to keep things nice and quiet. Additionally, a Koolance pump and reservoir unit was installed in one of the CD-ROM bays, allowing the user to adjust the pump speed based on desired performance and noise levels. Including Windows Server 2008 Standard, a one-year parts warranty, and a lifetime labor warranty, the machine went for a mere $16,338.89. Go ahead, treat yourself. You deserve nice things too.

Apple iMac murdered, reborn as all-in-one DreamCast mod

This may look like a beloved iMac, but make no mistake, it’s just a shell of its former self. CGCC forum member Logicdustbin decided to gut the all-in-one and replace its innards with a Sega Dreamcast and 15-inch LCD monitor. The result? The iCast, a beautiful homage to simpler times. Hit up the video after the break to see this Fronk-en-shteen in action, playing a game that’ll assuredly prepare our children for a post-apocalyptic world.

Modder hooks NES controller into Nintendo DS

This… this is dedication. While most softcore gamers are totally kosher with using the standard DS button layout to hit up retro titles like Super Mario Bros., Parked Bowab is definitely not. In order to bring back a sense of dignity to the heralded titles of the past (and to show off his fantastic modding skills), he hard wired an original NES controller to a Nintendo DS. The result? Authentic NES controls for games made famous on the iconic console. Bravo Parker, bravo.

PlayMad takes PSOne portable, shouts out to Sega’s Nomad

Clearly, this is the month to be making portable PSOne mods. Just weeks after checking out Bacteria’s totally bodacious IntoPlay comes a formidable opponent from G-force. The aptly named PlayMad gets its label from the innate ability to handle original PlayStation titles and its uncanny resemblance to Sega’s own Nomad. We could just bore you with more details, but instead, we’ll point you to the build links below and the hands-on demonstration vid just beyond the break. Trust us, it’s worth a look (or two).

Apple Disk ][ enclosure used to house Mac mini, enhance lives

We’re still debating whether or not a new Mac mini really is just around the bend, but one thing’s for sure — this version is the gnarliest we’ve ever seen of the current iteration. In an exercise that will undoubtedly go down as one of the most incredible Apple mods of all time (okay, so we only partly believe that), Sir Charles Mangin has managed to squeeze a Mac mini into a ridiculously old disk ][ enclosure. Best of all, he even managed to align the single slot with the DVD drive in the mini, giving it a totally seamless look from the outside. We know, this will only serve to drive the secondhand prices of disk ][ cases through the roof, but at least you’ve found a new reason to love the mini that has served you so well for so long, right?

SteamPunk Frankenstein casemod sure to anger Luddites

We see plenty of Steampunk mods around these parts, but this one surely takes things to a new level of insanity. Constructed by D. Maddocks, the SteamPunk Frankenstein PC case mod is monstrously, beautifully cobbled from — among other things — a church vent and some cold cathode tubes. When the backlighting is fired up it’s quite breataking to behold, though — at over eight feet tall — we’re not sure we’d like to see it in our own parlor, we can certainly admire the beast from afar. One more daguerreotype after the break, but hit the read link for the whole set.

DIY multitouch 67-inch rear-projection TV

Sure, this ain’t the first multitouch / rear-projection tv hack we’ve seen, but the thing is still rather novel. Using a 67-inch television, this guy put together a system that utilizes four IR laser line generators to produce a plane of infrared light across the entire surface of the screen. Two cameras mounted inside the TV look for the clusters of light generated when one touches the screen and tracks them using an app called tbeta for the Mac OS. If you’d like to build one yourself — or if you’re morbidly curious — the kids at IDEO Labs have put the step-by-step out there in excruciating detail. Hit the read for some of that action or, if you really just like to watch, be sure to catch the videos after the break.

Nokia’s Internet Tablet hacked into secondary PC monitor

What’s more exciting than seeing Cupcake on a Nokia Internet Tablet? Seeing your Internet Tablet double as a secondary display, naturally! If you’re too cash-strapped to go out and get one of those newfangled USB displays to run your widgets / chat windows / etc. in, and you’re scrambling for reasons to not toss that N800 or N810 on eBay, you should certainly give the read link a look. We can’t say this is the easiest hack in existence, but considering that no soldering irons are required, we’d say even the novice could at least give it a go. Plus, you can’t put a price on extra utility. You just can’t.

[Thanks, Addae]

Firefox 3 Smooth Tab Scrolling

This article was written on August 16, 2007 by CyberNet.

The latest nightly build of Firefox 3 has a nice new feature that the eye-candy lovers out there will like. In Firefox when you open too many tabs they overflow and scrollers on each end of the Tab Bar appear. That way you can navigate between all of your tabs without having them shrink down to the size of a pea.

Firefox 3 is looking to spruce that feature up a bit my animating the scrolling motion so that it isn’t so choppy. It’s a little hard to explain so I threw together a quick video to demonstrate the new feature:

You’ll also notice at the end of the video I demonstrate the new resizable toolbar elements.

I think that this is a pretty cool feature, but it is of little use to me. Don’t get me wrong…I’m a sucker for eye candy, but I actually modify Firefox so that it almost never scrolls my tabs. I’d honestly rather see tabs that are super small than have to scroll to find what I’m looking for.
