Cheap Geek: Samsung Monitor, GelaSkins Art, AutoSave Essentials

SamsungT220HD.jpg

If you depend on leftover office pizza for your lunch, you might be a cheap geek (my standup routine is coming along just fine).

1. If you watch a lot of streaming video on your computer, you need a monitor with the razor-sharp resolution of a great TV. May I recommend the Samsung T220HD, which NewEgg has for $219.99 (after a $50 mail-in rebate)? This 22-inch monitor has a 1680×1050 native resolution and a 20000:1 contrast ratio. Best, of all, it has a built-in DTV tuner, so it can play over-air programming out of the box.

2. You know GelaSkins from its artist-designed iPod-, phone-, and computer-protecting skins, but did you also know it sells wall art with the same awesome designs? Until May 5, the company’s beautiful prints are 20 percent off, $24 instead of $30. Browse around and you’re sure to find something you dig.

3. If you’ve ever lost work because you forgot to save it before shutting down, you’ll appreciate the benefits of AutoSave Essentials, a utility that does it for you automatically. Now this program is on sale for $24.95, down from the regular $39.99.

Bonus Deal: Tonight is 31¢ scoop night at all Baskin-Robbins, between 5 and 10 PM. The site will send you a text message reminder.

Eizo’s FlexScan EV2023W / EV2303W LCD monitors turn off when humans are away

Not that we haven’t seen LCD monitors get less demanding when it comes to energy, but we’ve yet to see a company take eco-friendliness this far. Professional LCD maker Eizo has just announced a new pair of panels (the 20-inch FlexScan EV2023W-H and the 23-inch EV2303W-T) that boast a “human presence sensor.” As the phrase implies, these displays are designed to shift to power saving mode when it realizes that its master has vacated the area, and when they return, it automatically flips back on in order to keep from being bashed by one of many USB-connected peripherals. Unfortunately, it seems the human detection timer can’t be changed from 40 seconds, and no, there are no current plans to implement a robot presence sensor once the Apocalypse is realized.

First non-Apple mini DisplayPort monitors look suspiciously familiar

We’re not sure if Apple will ever succeed in pushing mini DisplayPort on the industry in favor of the full sized version, but Collins America has decided what bandwagon it wants to be on — it’s just announced three new CinemaView displays that feature the smaller connector. The $299 1440 x 900 19-inch, $399 1650 x 1050 20-inch, and $499 1920 x 1080 24-inch displays all feature 3 USB ports, passthrough stereo audio ports, an all-in-one cable, and totally ripped industrial design, but hey — at least they’re cheap. Should be on sale “before September 1.”

JVC intros 1080p GD-463D10 3D LCD monitor in Japan

Not that JVC‘s been avoiding the 3D bandwagon or anything, but it has yet to formally introduce a 3D HDTV to really take advantage of the in-home 3D revolution that 3D backers just swear is right around the bend. The GD-463D10 is a 46-inch LCD HDTV with a native 1,920 x 1080 resolution, 2,000:1 contrast ratio, twin ten-watt speakers and support for three-dee material. We’re also told that the set will come bundled with a pair of polarized glasses when it ships in Japan early next month. The only problem? That ¥700,000 ($6,978) price tag, which seems particularly painful with no real 3D programming to speak of. Yet, of course.

ViewSonic debuts 24-inch VG2427 1080p LCD monitor

With little to no fanfare, ViewSonic has followed up its recently outed VT2230 with an all-too-similar VG2427. Said display packs a 24-inch panel, 1,920 x 1,080 native resolution, 20,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio, 300 nits of brightness, a height adjustable stand and hidden stereo speakers. Additionally, you’ll find a 2-port USB hub, ECO mode for sucking down less energy (while idle, we presume) and a seductively slim bezel to boot. It’s up for grabs right now for $499.

LG’s new W53 SMART monitors pack more intelligence per pixel

Just when we thought the desktop monitor market couldn’t get any more staid, LG comes along and spices it up a little bit. The new W53 SMART Monitors series includes a few “smart” additions like ambient light detection for Auto Brightness adjustment (like some laptops have), a Cinema Mode for blacking out the rest of the screen when video is playing, a timer to remind you to take breaks (like right now, for instance… you feel yourself getting very sleepy…) and a proximity sensor to activate the monitor controls when your hand approaches the display, and hide them when you’re not tweaking anything. Sizes range from 18.5- to 27-inches, and the models 21.5-inch and up do 1920 x 1080p Full HD at 16:9. The displays also offer contrast ratios up to 50,000:1, and 2ms response times. The lineup should hit worldwide this month.

Dell’s 21.5-inch SX2210 monitor now available to order

In Dell’s usual roundabout way of launching non-luxury products, this new SX2210 monitor first appeared on the company’s website with little fanfare last month, but it looks like it’s now actually available to order, and for the very reasonable of price of $279 (before the inevitable flood of discounts). Eizo debuts 56-inch 4k x 2k RadiForce LS560W LCD monitor

Eizo’s known for doling out less-than-affordable LCD monitors, but this one just takes the crown (for now). Slated to dazzle in operating rooms everywhere this July, the RadiForce LS560W is a 56-inch behemoth of an LCD that boasts a resolution of 3,840 x 2,160 (or darn close to native 4k x 2k). We’re also told that the panel features a 176-degree field of view, a 1,200:1 contrast ratio and 450 nits of brightness. And to think — we were beginning to wonder if all that 4k surgery footage would ever find a dedicated screen to run on.

Not ready to go big screen? Just need a medium sized set to handle your bedroom Xbox 360 addiction? ViewSonic‘s got a new one ready to splash down in your abode — the 22-inch VT2230. Said panel checks in with a 1,920 x 1,080 resolution, VGA / HDMI inputs, a built-in ATSC / NTSC / QAM TV tuner and a relatively small price tag. Further specs include a 1,000:1 contrast ratio, five millisecond response time, 300 nits of brightness and twin 3-watt speakers. Sure, nothing mind-blowing or anything, but it’s not half bad for $349.
