Man Claims Droid 2 Smartphone Exploded in His Ear

A 30-year-old Texas man claimed this week that he was talking on his Motorola Droid smartphone when it exploded in his ear.

Wearing a bandage over his head, Texas resident Aron Embry showed broadcast reporters his Droid 2 phone, which appears to be cracked with a burn.

“I heard a pop, I didn’t feel any pain initially, I pulled the phone down, I felt something dripping,” Embry told Fox News in a video interview.

Motorola has said it’s investigating the claim. The company has not acknowledged a manufacturing defect.

Incidents of exploding mobile devices have made rounds on the web in the past, and often times the cause seems to be faulty batteries. For example, amid incidents of iPod Nanos catching on fire in Japan, Apple in August 2008 issued a recall for a small number of iPod Nanos (0.001 percent) containing defective, potentially hazardous batteries. Also, in 2006, Apple issued a recall for iBook G4 and PowerBook G4 notebooks, because their batteries contained cells manufactured by Sony, which were causing batteries to explode.

Droid 2 Explodes on Dude’s Face, Requires Stitches

Yowtch. A North Texas man’s Droid 2 exploded during a phone call, and he has the shattered, blood splattered handset and face stitches to prove it. Aron Embry ended a call, heard a loud pop, and then felt what turned out to be blood trickling down his face. It was coming out of his ear.

There was no damage to Embry’s hearing, but the resulting trip to the local emergency room resulted in four stitches. “Once I got to the mirror and saw it, it was only then I kind of looked at my phone and realized that the screen had appeared to burst outward,” he told the local news.

Embry had purchased the phone a mere two days before.

Motorola issued a statement following the event,

Motorola’s priority is, and always has been the safety of our customers, and all Motorola products are designed, manufactured and tested to meet or exceed international and local standards for consumer safety. We will reach out to the consumer and investigate this thoroughly.

Keepin’ it real fake: Verizon-branded Droid X ditches Android for Windows Mobile 6.5 (video)

No matter how many we see, we never cease to be amazed by some of the KIRFs out there. Take this Droid X, for instance, which doesn’t even bother with a name like “Motorolo Foid X,” and even goes so far as to include some legitimate-looking Verizon branding to back up its nearly spot-on appearance. The real kicker, however, is that the KIRFers behind the device have decided to ditch Android in favor of Windows Mobile 6.5 for reasons unknown to us. Don’t believe us? Check it out in action in the video after the break, and look for the device itself to set you back around $244.

Motorola Mobility’s mystery gadget streams video to tablets and phones

Wonder why Motorola’s set-top-box business got bundled in with the phones? If we had to guess, it’s probably because Motorola Mobility is making a device that will wirelessly join both. Speaking at the Reuters Global Media Summit, company president Daniel Moloney said that Motorola’s working on a standalone device that will wirelessly sling video to tablets and phones in the home, and will later be integrated directly into new set-top-boxes the company rolls out. “It’s one consumer proposition that will come sooner rather than later,” he told the crowd, suggesting that the device would be available through “service providers” rather than sold off the shelf, and that said providers might charge an additional service fee for its use. Here’s hoping not. Perhaps Qualcomm finally found a buyer for that FLO TV spectrum, though?

Motorola Olympus shows up in the wild, demonstrates unyielding commitment to Motoblur

Witness our last review of an Android smartphone from Motorola and you’ll know what we think of Motoblur. Then again, we reckon we could get over our qualms when Moto’s skin is stretched out over this delectable-looking, supposedly Tegra 2-boasting smartphone. The Olympus has been snapped again, this time by someone claiming to have bought it at a flea market, and it now shows off an HDMI output alongside the standard microUSB connector, both of which are planted on the side of what’s looking like a very thin device indeed. The Olympus is carrying over the Defy‘s penchant for minimal bezel up front, though now that we have something to judge its size against, it does look to be equipped with at least a 4-inch screen. Pretty good competition for LG’s Star, we’re sure you’ll agree. If only we knew when it might launch

Motorola split wraps up on January 4th

Just in time for CES, eh? We knew it was happening at some point in January, and Motorola has just announced that it’ll formally be split into two companies as of January 4th, 2011. Actually, that’s not technically accurate: Motorola Mobility — the phone and set-top box guys — will be spun off into their own entity, while the parent company will change its name from Motorola to Motorola Solutions, responsible for the company’s infrastructure businesses. Shareholders of the current company as of December 21st will receive one share of Mobility for every eight shares they’ve got in their possession right now, while the remainder of the company will enact a 1-for-7 reverse split; as of the 4th, you’ll be looking at two stock symbols: MMI for Mobility and MSI for Solutions. So… who’s buying? Follow the break for the official press release.

Verizon sucks at Photoshop: confuses the Droid X for an iPhone

Man, Motorola’s not going to be pleased about this! The Droid X is justifiably one of Verizon’s marquee devices for this holiday season and takes pride of place on the carrier’s Cyber Monday offers page, but wait… why does its screen display the iPhone version of Google Maps? Oops!

[Thanks, Chris]

Motorola Olympus hitting AT&T in ‘December or January,’ says now-deleted Facebook post

Excited for Tegra 2 to finally take the Android smartphone world by storm? Recent leaks out of LG and Motorola certainly suggest that NVIDIA’s finally going to make some inroads with its silicon somewhere around the Gingerbread or Honeycomb time frame — and that might happen sooner rather than later if a posting on Facebook is to be believed. Remember that shiny black Olympus (pictured above) that leaked last week? Someone in the captain’s chair of one of AT&T’s official Facebook accounts responded to a question about availability of the phone earlier today, matter-of-factly reporting that “the Motorola Olympus should be available in December or January.” We would’ve been willing to chalk it up to confusion on an employee’s part, but the post was later removed without a trace, and a follow-up with AT&T elicited a standard “we don’t have any information to share about upcoming devices” response. The company claims the posting was made “erroneously,” and we’ll agree with them on at least one level: neither AT&T nor Motorola intended for that information to slip out today.

Is this the Motorola Olympus Tegra 2 smartphone?

A tipster is shopping this device around the tech blog circuit this morning claiming it’s the first of two “iPhone killer” Olympus Tegra 2 smartphones from Motorola. At first glance, it looks like a Motorola Defy. Closer inspection, however, reveals a slightly elongated speaker above the Motorola logo, different volume controls down the right-hand side, and possibly a front-facing camera top-left. We’ve already seen the words “Motorola” and “Olympus” cohabiting in the official UPnP Forum with bluetooth 2.1 + EDR and dual-band 802.11 a/b/g/n WiFi confirmed by the Bluetooth SIG and WiFi Alliance. What this is, we can only guess. See a second snap after the break.

Screen Grabs: Someone named Jesse McCartney uses his Motorola Flipout to stare at some poor girl’s backside

Pop musicians have been endorsing products as long as they’ve existed (who could forget Beatles toothpaste, Ricky Nelson hand sanitizer, or Enrico “The Great Caruso” Caruso-brand horse polish?), but for some reason the convergence of the two never fails to amuse (and annoy) us. Even more so when sensible boy band yelper Jesse McCartney, um, flips out his Motorola Flipout Android phone to surreptitiously film some hard working dancer’s backside. Is that how a celebrity should act? We think not! Video after the break (if you really want to, that is).
