Motorola ‘eager’ to get into tablet market, but won’t do so until next year

Motorola’s been thinking about tablets for a while now, but according to Sanjay Jha, it won’t be entering that flourishing new market segment until it’s absolutely certain it’ll have a product that’s “competitive in the marketplace.” Depending on how you perceive the Droid X, Moto might arguably be said to already have a tablet out on sale, but rumors have mostly circulated around a 10-inch slate device, most probably in partnership with Verizon and most likely using Android 3.0 as its OS. Google itself has admitted that Android won’t be fit for tablets until Gingerbread is delivered, and Jha’s reluctance to introduce any new hardware before 2011 seems to be motivated by a corresponding desire to have the latest and greatest version on board from the start. Can’t say we blame him.

Seidio Unveils Innocase Rugged for Droid X

Innocase Rugged - Droid X There are more iPhone cases on the market than anyone really needs, but if you have an Android phone, and recent studies show that the likelihood you do is growing all the time, you’ll probably want a case to protect your investment too. Seidio has long been known for its wide variety of cases that support dozens of manufacturers, and now they’ve released the new Innocase Rugged for the Motorola Droid X, one of the first high-impact cases for Motorola’s new flagship Android phone.

The Innocase Rugged comes with a screen protector to keep your Droid X’s display safe from scratches and cracks. Once the screen protector is applied, you can attach the Rugged Skin and Rugged Skeleton, the two parts that make up the case. The Skin covers the ports completely, and covers buttons with soft molding that allows you to continue to use them even while covered. The Skin also has a flexible camera cover that keeps dirt and dust out of the lens when not in use but slides open when you want to take photos or video. The Skeleton fits snugly over the skin and serves as a rigid plastic outer shell that protects your Droid X from falls and jolts. The Innocase Rugged can be purchased as a combo with a holster now for $49.95 retail.

Walmart Family Mobile enters the postpaid war, reselling service from T-Mobile

Walmart’s already firmly entrenched in the prepaid cellular business, offering handsets and service via Common Cents (Sprint) and Straight Talk (Verizon Wireless), but according to Greg Hall, vice president of merchandising at Walmart US, there’s a “perception among customers that prepaid service doesn’t offer access to the best phones or the best network quality.” In order to combat that, the outfit will be launching a new postpaid service today dubbed Walmart Family Mobile. The actual fine print is somewhat confusing, as it offers the best of both the pre- and postpaid worlds; users will still pay their monthly bill at the end of the month, but no subsidization will take place on the phones themselves due to this being a no-contract ordeal. It’ll cost $45 per month for unlimited calling and texting for the first line, and $25 per month for every extra line; unfortunately, data will be a pricey addition at $40 per month for 1GB… but at least that rolls over each month in case you don’t use it all. Initially, Wally World will offer five handsets, with the flagship phone being Motorola’s Cliq XT at $249. Frankly, we aren’t too impressed at what’s on offer here — get unlimited data bundled with calling and texting for the same $45 / month, then we’ll talk.

Update: Official PR is now after the break, and that’s a September 20th launch date, so next Monday.

Update 2: So, Walmart’s PR team contacted us to flesh out the data plan details that the AP sort of glossed over. Thankfully, the full skinny is far more attractive than what we were led to believe. In short, each line comes with 100MB of data (one-time); after you use that up, you’ve got a trio of prepaid ‘WebPak’ options to keep you going. $10 buys you an extra 200MB, $25 gets you 500MB and $40 gets you 1GB. Good stuff!

Motorola Defy hitting T-Mobile this holiday season, details to come… on Oprah

Remember that Defy that Motorola outed at the front end of this month? Turns out the Europeans won’t be the only ones seeing it this Christmas, as Moto has just revealed that it’ll be hitting US airwaves exclusively on T-Mobile “in time for the holidays.” You already know the details — a 3.7-inch WVGA scratch-resistant touchpanel, plenty of rigidity, Android 2.1, the ability to withstand dust and water, a five megapixel camera (with flash and auto focus), DLNA support and the outfit’s own Blur interface (despite Jha’s claims that it would fade from view) — but it looks as if you’ll have to wait a tick to find out anything about pricing. How long? Tune into today’s farewell season premiere of “The Oprah Winfrey Show” to find out. Yeah… strange. But true!

Motorola NYXboard Takes on TiVo Slide

The living room wars move on to the remote control. Motorola takes on TiVo Slide with NYXboard, its own version of the keyboard remote control.

The NYXboard remote packs in a compact QWERTY-keyboard on the back of its standard cable box remote. Sensors recognize which side is facing up and deactivate the side not in use. No more worrying about accidentally changing the channel while using the keyboard side of the remote!

The remote controls both the cable TV set-top box and the television set.

Motorola is expected to make the remote available by the end of the year, but it will be up to the individual cable companies as to whether customers will actually receive the keyboard remote with their cable TV boxes.

Motorola announces NYXboard QWERTY remote, super capacitor-based NYXgreen

Could we be seeing the beginning of a QWERTY trend in the living room? We can only hope — the latest to join in on the fun is Motorola, which has just introduced its new NYXboard remote at IBC 2010. Unlike the TiVo Slide, this one packs a standard TV remote on one side and a QWERTY keyboard on the other, and — here’s the real kicker — some sensors that recognize which side is facing up and deactivate the buttons not in use, an idea we’ve been waiting for. What’s more, Motorola says this one will be available by the end of the year, but actual availability to customers will likely depend on the cable companies providing the set-top boxes. Also unveiled at the show is the NYXgreen, a rechargeable remote powered by super capacitors that can supposedly last for two weeks after being charged by USB for just 60 seconds, plus a pair of decidedly more standard remotes that are available immediately. Not willing to wait for the genuine R2-D2 edition Droid 2 later this month? How would you change Motorola’s Droid X?

Last week we gave the Apple loyalists in attendance a chance to rip and rag the iPhone 4, and this time around we’re doing the same for Motorola’s best frienemies. The Droid X is without question the largest Droid in the family today, and calling it a showstopper on Verizon would probably be understating things. Now that it’s been on the market a few months, we’re curious to know how you early adopters like (or dislike) it. Did the massive screen end up being too large for comfort? Anything you’d tweak software-wise? How’s the VZW service been? Might your world change if Android 2.2 ever hits in official fashion? Droid R2-D2 gets docked — not in a X-Wing

Verizon’s teaser site for the Droid 2 R2-D2 edition has been teasing a series of locked spokes, accessible by all as soon as anyone in the community solves the “puzzle.” We don’t know exactly what the magic code was, but regardless, thanks to David H. yesterday, we’ve got a new gallery of devices pics and — oh, lookie — a special edition Droid R2-D2 dock. We don’t see room for a hyperdrive anywhere, nor wings, proton torpedos, or a cockpit for future Jedi to blast orbital space stations. So, let’s just call it a vacation home for astromechs needing a respite.

Update: As a number of you have pointed out, it’s “proton” torpedo in Star Wars canon, and “Jedi” is already plural. We’re left with two options here: total retcon the scope of which would put midi-chlorians to further shame, or just fixing the copy. We’ll let ya know what we decide.

Motorola Milestone 2 arrives, 720p HD video, Android 2.2, and Motoblur Enhanced in tow

Even without yesterday’s premature video promo, you had to know Motorola wouldn’t leave its international audience without a successor to the Milestone, so today — surprise, surprise — we’re being treated to the Milestone 2’s launch. The first thing to be said here is that if you’ve handled a Droid 2, you’ve also handled a Milestone 2 — the new phone follows Moto’s tradition of being a simple rebadge away from the Verizon-friendly Droid naming scheme, which means it retains the same 1GHz OMAP SOC, 512MB of RAM, 5 megapixel camera, 8GB of integrated storage (plus an included 8GB MicroSD card), and Android 2.2 as the default, albeit Motoblured, OS. Also, we got this straight from the Motohorse’s mouth: Motoblur’s not going anywhere, it’s the company’s “Android solution” and is here to stay.

One advantage over the Droid 2 here is the addition of 720p video recording. It’s still the exact same imager as on the back of the first Milestone, but now you can catch moving visuals in HD resolution. Moto were keen to point out the 5-device hotspot capabilities (courtesy of Froyo) on the Milestone 2, but they showed it off using a wired connection since the demo handset’s O2 SIM card wouldn’t permit wireless tethering. Well, that was a grand demonstration of how vulnerable our Android 2.2 goodness will be to the whims of mobile carriers. The Milestone 2’s expected to launch around Europe in Q4, with carrier-dependent pricing as per usual.
