Android Market adds e-books; movies and music soon to come?

The Android world’s been a-buzz this last week over a few new Android Market URLS, including http://market.android.com/music/ and http://market.android.com/movies/. In case you thought there was nothing to this tip, guess again: the third member of this trifecta (http://market.android.com/books/) has gone live. That’s right, visitors to the Android Market can pick up Glenn Beck’s mile-a-minute thrill ride The Overton Window for a mere $9. We hope that takes some of the sting out of the fact that a Google Music launch wasn’t part of this month’s Honeycomb event — although if we had to wager a guess, we’d say that the company will have Music and Movie offerings soon enough.

CyberNotes: Watch All Your Favorite TV Shows, Music and Videos with Peekvid

This article was written on January 26, 2007 by CyberNet.

CyberNotes
Free for all Friday

Missed a season of your favorite show? Want to “try” out a TV series before you buy the whole season on DVD? Don’t have a TV, but have highspeed Internet? I’ll stop there, but the excuses/reasons for using Peekvid are probably endless. Peekvid is a website with over 20,000 movies, TV shows, cartoons, and the like. It looks like it aggregates videos from YouTube and DailyMotion, and just makes it a more organized index of the popular, most wanted selections.  There are definitely some legal issues here, like copyright infringement, but we’ll get to that later.

So, what about quality. Well, you’ve probably seen YouTube videos before and know that they are far from high quality.  While it’s not the best, you can probably overlook the quality for the free content. Illegal content, but free content.  And just like any other movie that you’d watch over the Internet, you’ll need broadband Internet to get the best experience. And you thought BitTorrent was bad! No need to download videos, it’s all right there for you.

You’re probably thinking that Peekvid won’t be around for much longer. Afterall, anytime something like this surfaces and gets attention pointed at it, the MPAA is all over-it. But I’ll point out,  this site has been around for quite some time.  In fact, it made the front page of Digg over 250 days ago. Yes, 250 days ago and the MPAA still hasn’t managed to get the site taken down. So, as with any illegal site, this may not be around for long. Test-drive a season of 24, or Prison Break (before you buy the season of course) while you can :)

Back to the legal issues.  While trying to gather up as much information as I could, I wasn’t able to pinpoint where the site is located.  I came across some sources saying Australia, and several saying the Netherlands.  If it were by chance the Netherlands, here’s a possible reason why it’s still around:

“The enforcement of anti-piracy laws remains a concern to producers of software, audio and videotapes and textbooks from the United States. Organized optical disc software piracy and e-commerce piracy are also of major concern to the Dutch. Annual losses to the U.S. motion picture industry due to audiovisual piracy in the Netherlands have been estimated at tens of millions of dollars annually. The Dutch government has recognized the need to protect intellectual property rights and law enforcement personnel have worked with industry associations to find and seize pirated software. Dutch IPR legislation currently in place explicitly includes computer software as intellectual property under the copyright statutes.”

Because it’s Friday, many of you will be heading off to the movies.  Here are a few links so that you can get a “peek” at some of the movies before you go to the theater to pay for them:

You’ll notice that the movies are broken up.  In the instance that you’d want to download these movies, www.grabyoutubes.com will automatically give you the download links for all of the videos listed on a movie page. Here’s what you need to do.

  1. Find the movie/TV show you want to download
  2. Go to www.grabyoutubes.com and enter in the URL of the page that lists all of the videos in the series.
  3. Download the videos using the links they provide.
  4. Use Super Video Converter to put the files in a more recognizable format.

Whatever your reason is for wanting to get a “peek” at a movie or a TV show, PeekVid is a good “go-to” site… for now anyways!

Another alternative is http://www.alluc.org/alluc/ Thanks Wipeout140 for pointing this out!

Android-powered LG Revolution caught streaming Netflix at MWC (video)

Well, well — what have we here? That up above is LG’s Revolution, a Snapdragon-powered Android superphone. What’s inside is no normal Snapdragon, though. It’s actually a newfangled chip that isn’t shipping to consumers just yet, which includes DRM libraries at a hardware level that serve to satisfy paranoid movie execs. The good news is that Qualcomm has actually whipped up a solution that’ll finally bring Watch Instantly to Android; the bad news is that existing smartphones — even existing Snapdragon devices — will not be able to utilize the app. Without new hardware, the Android version of the Netflix app simply won’t function, and no one at Qualcomm was willing to tell us when these Netflix-friendly Snapdragon chips would begin to ship out.

Whenever that fateful day arrives, though, Snapdragon devices with HDMI sockets will be able to beam that content right to their HDTV — the company’s hardware is HDCP-approved, so there’s no sweat when it comes to watching content on the big screen. On-site representatives made clear that both the phone and the app were for demonstration purposes only, but we’d be shocked if LG’s handset shipped without this compatibility. The demo we saw was smooth as butter, and the app itself looked glorious on the Revolution’s 4.3-inch touchscreen. See for yourself in the video just past the break.

Unstoppable: the first Blu-ray film with Android-compatible Digital Copy

It’s a little shocking that it’s taken this long to get a Digital Copy that’s compatible with Android, but clearly it’s the week of shackles being broken. Just yesterday, Qualcomm announced that all future Snapdragon devices would be cleared for Netflix streaming, and now Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment is announcing that its impending Unstoppable launch will allow Android users to watch the flick on the go. By enabling the transfer through BD Live, it marks the first time that this has been possible with Google’s mobile OS, though it should be noted that consumers will need the disc itself, a WiFi-connected BD player, Android 1.6 or higher and the free PocketBLU app to make the magic happen. Both the movie and app can be downloaded starting today, but here’s the real question: are you willing to invest in a movie just to experience Digital Copy… on Android?

Gogo plans to expand into in-flight movies, possibly gaming

There’s not a lot of firm details just yet, but the CEO of Gogo’s parent company, Aircell, has just confirmed that GoGo is planning to take a few steps beyond it’s basic in-flight WiFi business this year. That will apparently start with a library of in-flight movies that customers will have access to “later this year,” and could eventually expand to other in-flight content including “live gaming.” No word on any content partners involved in any of those plans, but CEO Michael Small says that he believes content has the potential to be a” significant” revenue source for the company. Incidentally, this news coincided with GoGo’s announcement of a $35 million boost from its latest round of funding and, as mocoNews reports, the company has apparently already hired “a number of executives from internet companies” to help it with its new content offerings.

Samsung adds Lovefilm streaming to UK Blu-ray players

Lovefilm, the closest thing Europe has to an answer to Netflix, was recently swallowed whole by the Amazon juggernaut, but that doesn’t seem to have stunted its progress toward ubiquitous availability. Samsung has just announced its intent to include Lovefilm movie streaming as an app on all of its Blu-ray players in the UK, enhancing both the subscription service’s profile and its own claim to providing the user with multifunctional, “smart” technology. It’s disappointing not to see this rollout effective across all of Lovefilm’s European markets, but we guess small steps are better than no steps.

Amazon agrees deal to buy UK movie streaming and rental service Lovefilm

Amazon has just announced it has agreed terms to buy up all the remaining shares of Lovefilm it didn’t already own. The British outfit operates a subscription-based movie rental and streaming service in its home market along with Germany, Denmark, Sweden and Norway, and should give Amazon a very solid base from which to build its presumably Netflix-besting ambitions. Lovefilm has been just about the closest thing Europe has had to the ridiculously successful North American movie distributor and Amazon is arguably getting in just in time, given Netflix’s overtures toward expanding into the UK. Customary closing conditions will need to be met before the final stamp of approval is applied, but the acquisition is expected to complete by the end of Q1 of this year. Amazon’s wading into yet more content distribution, who’d have thunk it?
