CES 2009: The Other iCap–an MP3 Player for Your Head

icap2.gif

I can’t say I’m surprised, really, but a few minutes after looking at that other iCap, I came across this one from Gesten Technologies. Fortunately for both companies, beyond the name, people aren’t likely to confuse the two devices. As part of the longstanding CES tradition of shoving MP3 players into everything, the iCap shoves on into the bill of a baseball cap.

The iCap doesn’t stop there, however, it also features two speakers, a display, an FM tuner, and a voice recorder. The player has 1GB of built-in memory and a Micro SD card slot. The idea here is to replace headphones, which tend to drown out the wearer’s surroundings.

The iCap snaps straight onto the bill of your hat. It retails for $119.95.

Convergence! For those us aren’t ready to throw away our CDs and DVDs, iLuv’s got the i1155. The multimedia player doubles as both a CD/DVD player and a dock for your iPod.

The cover of the player flips open so you can display your iPod upright. The i1155 has a 8.5-inch display for playing DVDs or video of your 5th gen iPod. No word yet on iPod touch or iPhone support.

CES 2009: The Best iPod Knockoffs

I’m always a little bummed that CES and Macworld fall in the same week every year. It means, unfortunately, that since I’m hoofing around Vegas all week, I can’t make it out to San Francisco to see all the shiny Apple products and accessories.

Fortunately, however, CES has the next best thing (sort of): iPod knockoffs. There were plenty to choose from this year, especially in the International Hall.

After the jump check out a few highlights from the world of iPod knockoffery.

CES 2009: iCheck Plays MP3, Detects Alcohol and Bad Breath

Drunk dialing and texting I understand, but I hadn’t heard anything about an apparent outbreak of drunk music-listening. That said, who wouldn’t want a breathalizer built into their portable media player? Sascha found one yesterday–and I came across this one today. Trend alert!

From Korean company Seju, the iCheck is a “smelling” MP4 player. Measuring 5.6-mm thick (“the best slim size,” says the company), this device has most of the standard Flash player features: a 1.5-inch color screen, 4GB of memory, and a high-speed USB port that works with both Windows and Mac.

The iCheck also features a built-in breathalizer and a bad breath detector. Unfortunately, the thing won’t actually stop you from listening to terrible music while drunk. Hopefully we’ll see that functionality in the next version.

CES 2009: Walletex Intros Worlds Slimmest MP3 Player

Israeli electronics company makes slim products. Really slim. In fact, most of the products that the company produces would probably slip pretty comfortably into your wallet–hence their clever name. One of the credit-card-size products on display at CES today was the Telex Music-Player.

The ultra-thin player has a built-in USB dongle that can plug easily into your PC for simple music-file dragging and dropping. The card will charge directly from your computer. It also ships with a headphone adapter that slips right over the USB dongle.

The card is available in 2-4GB capacities.

CES 2009: Roland Teaches You to Play the Drums Rock Band-Style

rolanddrumsoftware.gif

The other cool new product showcased at last night’s CES Showstoppers event at the Wynn Hotel and Casino came from music company, Roland. The company introduced new tutorial software for its HD-1 V-Drums Lite electronic drum kit.

The DT-HD1 software is designed to teach beginners how to play the drum through various courses. There are a handful of different modes, but the one that really caught my eye at the show was something that the company calls “falling bricks but that we just call “Rock Band mode.”

The software features 34 preset patterns, a metronome, drum mute, drum and pad solo, and A-B repeat. It’s compatible with Windows XP and ships with a UM-1G USB-MIDI interface and audio cable.

The software should be hitting store shelves in March. Check out a video of the software in action, after the jump.

CES 2009: Aliph New Jawbone Earbuds Coming Soon

Aliph_Jawbone.jpg

Soon the Aliph New Jawbone Bluetooth headset (rated 4 out of 5 by PCMag’s Jamie Lendino) will be shipping with new earbuds. At last night’s CES Pepcom event, Aliph was handing out “beta” packages of the earbuds. `

The redesigned earbuds are said to offer a more ergonomic design and secure fit for those who want to wear the headset without an earloop. Look for them to be included with the New Jawbone headset sometime in Q1 of 2009.

CES 2009: Samsungs New P3 iPod Touch Killer

I got a call from our lead audio analyst Tim Gideon before heading over to the Digital Experience event tonight at the Mirage Hotel in Las Vegas. Gideon really wanted to shoot a video of Samsung’s latest MP3 player, the P3, the company’s latest attempt to dethrone Apple’s mega-popular iPod Touch.

The DAP features a three-inch TFT-LCD touch screen with EmoTure haptic feedback. The P3 also features DNSe 3.0 sound enhancement technology and integrated speakers.

Check out a video of Gideon taking us through the paces of a P3 demo unit, after the jump.

Scosche Introduces Slew of iPod and iPhone Accessories

Scosche_kickBACK.jpg

Following the introduction of their passPORT iPod and iPhone car integration kit last month, Scosche has announced several new products this week ahead of CES 2009. The first three are stereo earphones: the IDR400M features noise canceling, a hands-free cell microphone, 10mm drivers, and single and dual flanged soft silicone inserts. The IDR600 has slightly larger 11mm drivers, a sliding magnetic cable management system, and a 24K gold-plated 3.5mm audio jack. The HZ5 tuneSTREAM Bluetooth Headphones give iPhone and iPod owners up to 30ft of wireless range (though probably less in real-life), the ability to answer hands-free phone calls, and up to eight hours of continuous battery life.

The company has also announced the passPORT Home Dock, which will charge the iPhone 3G, the 2G iPod touch, and the 4G iPod nano; it can snap into existing docking stations. In addition, there’s the reCOIL retractable car charger for the iPod and iPhone; it features a four foot cord and a magnetically locking dock connector. Finally, the company has announced new Protect and kickBACK (pictured) polycarbonate cases for new iPod and iPhone models, as well as the showTIME six-foot A/V output cable. Release dates vary, but most will be available either this month or by Spring 2009.
