ThinkPad X100e does the video unboxing thing in glorious white

Deep down, we all sort of knew that the day would come when a ThinkPad would finally feature more color than its signature keyboard highlights — and the company obliged such trepidations with not one but two new color-loving ‘Pads announced here at CES. One of them, the “definitely not a netbook” X100e, has already found itself been candidly photographed while making its way out of a retail box. Featuring a comprehensive gallery of angles of the new machine — which include some comparison shots making the X200 look bulky — the read link should provide plenty for the ThinkPad loyalist that wants to be in the know. If you want it quick and dirty though, video of the unboxing awaits just past the break.

[Thanks, xleung]

Gateway LT21 Netbooks: Longer Battery Life, Better Connectivity

lt2108u.jpg

Gateway recently announced the release of its Gateway LT21 Series netbook, which will offer extended hours and connectivity for consumers. The 6-cell Li-ion (4400mAh) battery provides up to 8 hours of play time, and thanks to that and its 802.11b/g Wi-Fi, you’ll be ordering fancy blended coffee drinks all day.

“Netbooks have been firmly embraced by consumers as an incredibly convenient, easy-to-use way to stay connected, be more productive, and stay in touch,” said John Nguyen, product marketing manager for Gateway. “Gateway LT21 Series netbooks are designed to go anywhere for use by anyone, as their sleek form factor and intuitive design naturally fit into how people live and connect today.”

This 10.-inch netbook, weighing in at 2.62 pounds, is packed with an Intel Atom Processor N450, Windows 7 Starter, a built-in webcam, three USB 2.0 ports, and VGA. The suggested retail price for the base model is $299.99. This netbook is currently available on Gateway’s Web page.

Lenovo IdeaPad S10-3 and S10-3t hands-on

Don’t worry Lenovo IdeaPad S10-3, we didn’t forget about you — even if we are totally smitten with your futuristic sibling the IdeaPad S1 Hybrid. The 10-inch S10-3 throws away the design of the S10 and S10-2 for a thinner body and a decorated lid, and we’ve got to say the 2.4 pound netbook felt quite light and sturdy in our hand. Under the lid we’re loving the same chiclet style keyboard that we saw on the Skylight, though the touchpad with integrated mouse buttons is a bit small for our tastes. For $399 ($379 on Amazon) the S10-3 seems like it could be quite a worthy 10-inch netbook competitor, though we will have to see what its Intel Atom N470 and three-cell battery (there’s an optional six-cell) provide in terms of battery life.

The $499 S10-3t tablet version is going to take a bit more of a sell though. The convertible netbook (fine, netvertible) is thicker and heavier than the S10-3 largely due to its hinge and thicker touchscreen. But regardless of the somewhat awkward design (especially with a protruding six-cell battery strapped to its back), the capacitive touchscreen was quite responsive to our touches and gestures, and we’re pretty impressed with Lenovo’s Natural Touch interface that its got running on top of Windows 7 Home Premium. We also like that you can choose to flip the screen around and that the orientation will adjust automatically thanks to the accelerometer. But don’t take our word for it, hit the break for a look at the finger-friendliness in in action.

Hands-On: Twin Screens Pack Potential in eDGe Netbook, E-Reader Combo

Entourage Edge

LAS VEGAS — The enTourage eDGe is an unusual device. With two screens that fold together like a book, the eDGe promises to be an electronic book reader and a netbook at the same time so users can switch from reading on the black-and-white E Ink screen to the adjacent LCD screen to send e-mails, browse and watch videos.
CES 2010

The eDGe, which was announced in October, made its debut Tuesday at a preview event for the Consumer Electronics Show here.

“Consumers can get everything they want in one device now,” says Doug Atkinson, vice president of marketing and business development for enTourage Systems.

It’s a nifty idea that enTourage seems to have pulled off well.

At 3 pounds, the device feels surprisingly lightweight and is well-engineered. Under the hood, it runs Google’s Android operating system. The enTourage eDGe has an  ARM processor, 4 GB storage, an SD card slot, 3-megapixel camera and two USB ports.

The left half of the eDGe has a 9.7-inch e-paper display that can display books in the PDF and EPUB formats. At first glance, it looks similar to the large-screen Kindle DX but offers more features. You can make notes on it using the stylus though what you will end up with is a crude scrawl that looks like the drawing of a 4-year old — but it is legible.

There’s also a highlight button that lets you mark specific portions of the text and save it for reference later. The eDGe lets you scroll through a library of books on the LCD color screen and search for strings that are displayed in the e-reader on the other side.

entourage edge dualbook

The 10.1-inch LCD touchscreen can play video or browse the internet. It comes with Wi-Fi connectivity and offers optional access to 3G networks. The capacitive touchscreen lacks the same level of smoothness that the iPhone has but is good enough.

Four buttons are located on a panel at the edge of the screen: back, rotate, home and menu. A tab at the bottom of the screen offers more options, such as the digital e-book store, browser, e-mail and an icon for other apps.

Click the menu button and it pulls up an onscreen keyboard that can get you surfing.

The pivoting dual screens mean the eDGe has the dexterity of a contortion artist. The two screens can be folded back so the device looks like a large notepad, with the displays facing the user or folded up like a book. It can also be maneuvered into the standard notebook format.

The eDGe is an audacious idea that enTourage Systems seems like it can deliver. Priced at $490, the device is expected to be available next month.  Sure, it is a little rough around the edges — it feels slow at times and the touchscreen could be better — but for now, it’s brimming with potential.

Gateway brings Atom N450 to LT21 line of 10.1-inch netbooks

Gateway got official with its 15.6- and 11.6-inch EC laptops back in October, and now it’s time for the netbooks to get their shine on. Hot on the heels of Intel’s Atom N450 release, the aforementioned company is rolling out its LT21 series here in Vegas, complete with 6-cell 5,600mAh battery options (for up to ten hours of usage), 802.11n WiFi, an N450 under the hood and Intel’s GMA 3150 handling the pixel duties. You’ll also get a chassis that weighs just 2.76 pounds along with an integrated webcam, Ethernet, a 10.1-inch LED-backlit display (1,024 x 600), a 93 percent full-size keyboard and a multi-gesture touchpad to boot. The rest is pretty vanilla: 1GB of RAM, a 160GB or 250GB hard drive, three USB 2.0 sockets, VGA and a multicard reader. The LT21 range will arrive in red, black and white hues, with Windows 7 Starter or Windows XP Home runnin’ the show; check ’em later this month starting at $299.99. Or don’t, whatevs.

HP goes netbooks with Mini 2101, 210 and Compaq 201

Thought you were done with seeing the latest Pine Trail netbooks? How about some more from HP? The world’s number one computer manufacturer has gone a bit netbook crazy with a slew of new models — the HP Mini 2101, 210 and the Compaq 201 — and that doesn’t even include the business and education focused HP Mini 5102. The most exciting of the bunch are the HP Mini 210 and 2101 which share the same new design, rubbery feeling lid, and chicklet-style keyboard. Starting at $329, the 210 is available in the colors of the rainbow and packs a 1.6GHz Intel Atom N450 processor, 1GB of RAM and Windows 7 Starter. The $399 2101 is spec’d the same, but is aimed at a more professional user and is only available in black. Both will be available with Broadcom Crystal HD accelerators. The $229 Compaq 201 totally forgets that Intel has a new Atom chip and uses the older N270 processor, 1GB of RAM and Windows 7 Starter. Hit the break for full PR, some hands-on impressions and video.

HP Mini 5102 has optional handle and touchscreen; the drive to succeed

HP’s netbooks can have a tendency to really creep up in price as you pile on the specs, but you can’t fault them for options. Particularly this new Atom N450-based Mini 5102, which is aimed at business and education use. You can tweak the 10-inch laptop with a WSVGA or WXGA screen, Broadcom HD video acceleration, and just about any OS you could think of: FreeDOS, SUSE Linux, Windows XP and Windows 7 (Starter and Home Premium). You can also squeeze a capacitive multitouch screen into the 0.9-inch form factor and take your pick from a 4-cell or 6-cell battery. Like we said, lots of options.

As far as fit and finish, the laptop isn’t that far divergent from the Mini 5101, which certainly isn’t a bad thing. We love the quality, no-frills feel and look, and the optional handle (which has to be picked at the time of order, since it’s integrated) is surprisingly nice and handy. If we had one gripe it would be the oppressive screen bezel, but at least it leaves room for a 95%-sized keyboard, and the brushed aluminum screen back is a nice touch.

MSI Wind U160 hands-on

We told you MSI was going to bring its Wind U160 to Vegas and we just some alone time with it. The design is obviously inspired by a Sony VAIO, with the glowing power light nestled in the hinge, though we wish they had mimicked Sony’s matte lids — the U160’s glossy mocha-brown lid loves it some fingerprints. We’re impressed with the thinness of the netbook and it felt pretty light in our hand. Unfortunately the chicklet keyboard doesn’t feel as solid as the one on the Wind U135 and it’s got some serious trampoline bounce. As for the internals, we’ve been told it will pack an 1.6GHz Intel Atom N450 CPU, 1GB of RAM and a Windows 7 Starter-booting 250GB hard drive all for $399. It could be a decent netbook player if its six-cell battery produces some solid battery life. Hit the break for the video.
