Acer Aspire One 532 spotted in database with Atom N450 ‘Pine Trail’ processor

It’s no secret that we’re facing down a tidal wave of new netbooks at CES in January, with all signs pointing to Intel unleashing its brand new graphics-friendly Atom N450 chip based on its new-generation Pine Trail platform. So, before we get all netbook’d out, let’s allow ourselves a small amount of excitement at this Acer Aspire One 532 spotted within the bowels of the internet (Acer’s driver pages). A bit of Google work uncovered specs that include an Atom N450 processor with Intel GMA 3150 and a 10.1-inch 1280 x 720 screen. It’s been listed for 299 Euros in one of these random, bean-spilling online stores, so that gives a decent reason to hope that a new generation of Atom won’t mean a major leap in pricing. Is that a whiff of holiday optimism we smell in the air?

ASUS Eee PC 1201N dons burgundy garb, you still can’t have one

Say hello to the little friend you already know and want, this time dressed in a more extrovert red attire. We don’t yet know whether this 1201N variant will be finding retail shelves or if it’s just a pretty prototype, but that doesn’t make too much difference at this point. With the classical black model still only available on a pre-order basis (with a mid-January landing date) the closest you’ll be getting to ASUS’ Ion-powered 12-incher is glamor shots like these. Well, either that or a forthcoming Engadget review, both are good. See one more snap of the burgundy bruiser after the break.

Acer’s Ferrari One netbook now available — might not help you get a date

You’re probably already fairly familiar with Acer’s foray into speedy netbooks with the the Ferrari One — the 11.6-incher we found to be slightly underwhelming when we got our hands on it back in September. Still, the famous branding and the red hot lid is sure to be a draw for some, and other than that, this laptop boasts an 1.2GHz AMD Athlon 64 X2 CPU, an AMD M780G chipset, ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3200 graphics, plus WiFi, Bluetooth, optional WWAN and a 6-cell battery. Modder creates dual-screen Courier from Dell Mini 9, calls it Harlequin, Joker unavailable for comment

Microsoft’s Courier, the dual-touchscreen wunderbooklet, had plenty of gadget lovers in a tizzy in late September — even though the company itself doesn’t seem to know what to do with it. An eventual release of the thing seems unlikely, so user Pak-Kei Mak over at the My Dell Mini forums created his own. It’s a Dell Mini 9, or was a Dell Mini 9 anyway, bisected and keyboard replaced by another nine-inch display. This pic and another were posted back around Halloween, showing the two halves loosely coupled together, but pakkei has indicated a laser-cut custom case is in the works to bring it all together in a much tidier package. We do love lasers.

Update: Pak-Kei Mak commented to say he’s still “steamrolling along” with this design and will have updates for us soon. As it turns out this is the very-same Pak-Kei Mak who was one of our Kindle engraving contest winners a few months back, which interestingly also featured the use of lasers. It’s a small world, ain’t it?

EVERKI Camber is a netbook bag with a degree in ergonomics

The EVERKI Camber netbook case must have an inferiority complex. Why else, when every other netbook sleeve is designed to take up minimal space, does the Camber sport a large, bulging protrusion from one side? Well, you might say, it’s designed to raise your netbook or ultraportable up to a more ergonomic 30 degree angle away from horizontality, but when was the last time you really regretted not owning a CushionSpeaker or a CushDesk? The more useful feature here, for us, is the space that bulge provides for storing your charger and AC plug (which can be horrifically huge in the UK), though whether the $49.99 price is justifiable, we leave up to you. Atom N450 netbook torrent undammed on January 11 next year?

Well, well, here’s something to spice up that upcoming post-CES malaise. The second Monday of the first January of the 2010th year of the Gregorian calendar seems set to be the day Atom-powered netbook lovers have been waiting for. DigiTimes today reports that the long (much too long) awaited move to the Pine Trail platform is set to go off with a pretty major bang of vendor support come next month. Acer, ASUS, Lenovo, and MSI are all said to have lined up their N450 wares — we know that for a fact with Lenovo — and are now awaiting Lord Intel’s predetermined date to start shipping. We’re also hearing the even faster N470 chip will start making the rounds in March 2010, meaning that the first quarter of next year will see more netbook innovation than the last year and a half combined.

Intel brings out Atom SDK wanting more apps, acts oblivious to Windows

Intel wants people to develop apps for the x86 instruction set. Think about that a little, let it sink in. Now that you’re appropriately unimpressed, let’s discuss this new developer kit that’s just been brought out. Designed to assist coders in that overwhelmingly challenging and new environment known as Atom-powered netbooks, the SDK has now hit Beta and is being distributed to developers of apps for Windows and Moblin. Yes Moblin, the light and snappy Linux flavor intended to spur on the sinking ship known as the MID category, still hasn’t been abandoned by Intel, even if its original goal now seems out of reach. Intriguingly, apps approved by Intel will “sell at stores opening next year,” which perhaps hints at grander plans than the mere optimization of software to undernourished hardware.

Acer to launch first Chrome OS netbook, Android-based Aspire One sales disappoint

Acer loves it some Google. And unless Google’s trying to stamp out your revenue stream, who doesn’t? Now Acer chairman, JT Wang, says that he expects to be first to market with an official Chrome OS netbook — sometime in the second half of 2010 according to DigiTimes‘ sources. In fact, JT says that Acer’s been working on a Chrome OS device since mid-2009. This despite admittedly weaker than expected demand for its dual-boot Android netbook, the Aspire One AOD250. Guess even the Google halo isn’t enough to shoehorn its smartphone OS into a market dominating position on cheap ultra-portables. It’s worth pointing out that DigiTimes‘ moles aren’t saying anything new with the launch time-frame since Google’s target for its gold Chrome OS build has been 2H of 2010 ever since the lightweight OS was announced. Not that the timing matters too much since we’ll likely be seeing plenty of Chromium OS netbooks flooding the grey market long before the second half of 2010.

Be.ez Wraps Netbooks in Style

BeezLArobe.jpgRecognizing that those crazy netbooks aren’t going away, French accessory maker Be.ez (it’s pronounced “be easy”) is expanding its line of LA robe netbook sleeves for 11.6-inch netbooks. That means that owners of ASUS EeePC 1101 HA and Acer 751H netbooks can now get the perfect fit. The 11.6-inch sleeves come in two color combinations: black-and-white and “red kiss.”

The LA robe sleeves are made with low-resilience polyurethane memory foam, so they offer protection from bumps and scratches. The new 11.6-inch sleeves retail for $22.99. You can see the whole Be.ez line at Amazon.

Dell, HP, and Lenovo bringing SDXC to laptops alongside 32nm Intel chipsets?

Those incredibly sexy (as far as portable storage capacities are concerned) 64GB SDXC cards coming on the horizon? You’re gonna want some hardware to work with it, and according to DailyTech, three of the largest computer manufacturers are looking to bring the upgrade with Intel’s forthcoming Arrandale CPUs. Lenovo, HP, and Dell are reportedly working on new designs that’ll contain both the new 32nm chipsets and SDXC readers. Not that we’re surprised to see new SDHC’s time running out, but it does give you something to look forward to.
