Acer Plans a Million Chrome OS Netbooks, New E-Reader

Google is yet to release its Chrome operating system for netbooks but already Acer is betting big on it.

Acer says it plans to ship about one million netbooks this year running Chrome OS.

“For Chrome, we’re aggressively pursuing to become one of the first,” Jim Wong, Acer’s president of IT products division told Bloomberg, “so there’s a change to the Microsoft-Intel environment.”

The Acer netbooks with Chrome OS are expected to be released in the third quarter of the year.

For the fledgling operating system, Acer’s support will ensure it debuts with a bang.

Google introduced Chrome OS two months ago as a lightweight, browser-based operating system that would boot up in seven seconds or less. The first Chrome OS netbooks will be available in late 2010, the company said, through hardware from manufacturers Google has partnered with.

Acer’s support is important for Google as the former is one of the biggest netbook makers. Acer’s also an ambitious company that has set its sights on overtaking HP to become the leading PC maker.

Acer hasn’t mentioned pricing for its Chrome OS netbooks but Google has said that it will cost about the same as those running Microsoft’s Windows operating system.

Acer’s ambitions extend beyond netbooks. At the end of June, the company plans to launch an e-reader with a 6-inch black-and-white screen.

Though Acer has been one of the pioneers in the netbook market, it is a late entrant to the fast-growing e-readers segment. So, instead of competing with rivals such as Amazon’s Kindle, Sony’s Reader and Barnes & Noble’s Nook in the U.S., Acer plans to focus on Europe and Asia.

The company says it will target its e-readers at customers outside North America and build partnerships with publishers in other countries.

ARM-based processors to overtake x86 competition in netbooks and MIDs by 2013?

We suppose industry analysts must be paid on account of just how grand their prognostications are. ABI Research know-it-alls have come out with their own spectacular claim today by asserting their expectation that x86 processors — still dominant the world over — will be swept aside in the rapidly developing “ultra-mobile device” space by the ascension of ARM-based processing architectures. That the Cortex CPUs have grown in popularity (and power) is undeniable, but who realistically expects Intel to sit back and watch all this happen? The x86 patriarch has even gone and created an Atom SDK, so we hardly expect the forecast table above to become reality. We’re just happy to see that ARM’s lower power profile is attracting investment — it’s always good to see a threat to Santa Clara’s chokehold on the CPU market, and AMD’s sleepwalking through the past few months hasn’t helped things. Now if only those Tegra 2 smartbooks were on retail shelves instead of inside prototype shells, we could get started on this supposed revolution.

Chinese MacBook Air Knockoffs Actually Look Awesome

Chinese knockoffs of the MacBook Air could actually be a compelling option for those desiring the razor-thin form factor of the subnote without paying the premium.

Pictured above and below, clones of the MacBook Air are appearing for sale everywhere in Shenzhen, China, according to MIC Gadget. They feature the guts of a standard netbook: a 1.66GHz Intel Atom processor, a 3-cell battery, a 160GB hard drive, 1GB RAM and 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi. What sets the knockoffs apart from netbooks is the 13.3-inch, 1280-by-800-pixel LED backlit screen, which is the same size as the MacBook Air’s. They’ll only cost you about $300 — a hefty discount compared to Apple’s MacBook Air, which starts at $1,500.

There’s even some stuff the knockoff has that the original Air doesn’t: an SD card slot, Ethernet port and HDMI out.

Of course, the knock-off is cheaper partly because you don’t get the aluminum enclosure of the real thing; you get a white plastic simulacrum body instead. Plus, the Apple glows in different colors as opposed to the original white. But that’s not too bad: These differences make the knockoff look special (from these pictures at least). Imagine all the head turns you’ll get at the coffee shop.

Because the insides are so different from the original MacBook Air, it’d be more fair to compare the knockoff to the slew of netbooks available on the market. Want a cheap portable with a bigger screen and larger keyboard? This looks like a really attractive option compared to the crampy 10-inch netbooks out there.

The knockoff isn’t shipping with Mac OS X, but rather Windows XP. Question is, can it be turned into a Hackintosh? We’ll try to get one just to see. We found one at DHGate.com for $325, and we just might order one for testing and review.

ASUS Eee PC 1005PEG includes WiMAX for those lucky enough to live near a signal

Apparently we weren’t the only one’s enjoying some Clear speeds down in Vegas, the 10.1-inch ASUS Eee PC 1005PEG was riding the 4G waves too. Other than its WiMAX support, the Eee PC 1005PEG has the same specs as the recently-reviewed 1005PE, including a 1.66GHz Intel Atom N450 CPU, 1GB of RAM, and a 250GB hard drive. If the 10005PEG can manage the same 8-hours of video playback as the 1005PE we’ll welcome the WiMAX-enabled lappie with open arms to the growing family of Pine Trail netbooks.

Toshiba Mini NB305 review

If there’s been a Renaissance man in the world of first-gen netbooks it’d be the Toshiba Mini NB205. Its long battery life, comfortable keyboard and attractive and sturdy build distinguished it from the others, even when it made a late entrance to the little laptop market last year. Like most manufacturers, Tosh has gone and refreshed its knockout netbook with Intel’s Atom Pine Trail platform and slightly altered the design. But has the competition caught up to the $399 Mini NB305? Or does the Mini NB305 still hold a place in our hearts as the most versatile netbook out there? FIC outs Pineview-boasting SVE00 netbook

FIC’s just launched its new Pinetrail netbook, the FIC SVE600. This little guy (which measures 10.1-inches) isn’t exactly ground-breaking, but that Atom N450 is still new enough to spark a little interest, right? The SVE600 boasts the aforementioned 1.66GHz Intel Atom N450 CPU, 1GB of DDR2 RAM, a choice of an either up to 500GB HDD or an up to 32GB SSD, plus WiFi, BGN, Gigabit Ethernet, Bluetooth WiMax, and HSDPA. You’ll also get your choice of either Windows 7 or Linux OSs. There’s no word on pricing yet, but we’ll let you know when we do. There’s another beauty shot after the break.

That’s largely because the Taiwanese manufacturer figured out early that basic netbooks at lower prices would fly off shelves. The Definitive Guide to Making the Most of Your Netbook

Netbooks are a great compromise between pecking away a smartphone keyboard or hauling a tank-size laptop around—but they aren’t without shortcomings. Make the most of your netbook with these netbook-friendly tips, tricks, and applications.

Although often derided for being under-powered and a poor substitute for a full laptop, netbooks fill a nice niche. They’re tough to beat for portable browsing, note taking, and mobile computing when a laptop is over kill, the battery life is too short, and using your phone is impractical or uncomfortable. Still, you can do a lot to make life with a netbook easier.

Accept the Hardware Limitations and Tweak When Possible

Netbooks are limited and you can’t be happy using one unless you accept that. Watching video on it won’t be like watching video on a 24″ widescreen monitor. It won’t run Crysis. You’re not going to be single-handedly solving complex protein-folding operations on it and curing cancer. Nearly every netbook has a fairly standard cookie-cutter spec sheet of a 1024×600 pixel screen, a 160GB HDD, 1GB of RAM, and a modest mobile processor.

If you already own a netbook, the best thing you can do is shell out $30-60 and upgrade the 1GB of RAM to 2GB of RAM. It’s a cheap enough upgrade and it provides a significant performance boost. If you’re shopping for a netbook, the best advice we can give is to focus on two things: battery life and the physical inputs, like the spacing of the keyboard and arrangement of secondary buttons—physical design is about the only thing distinguishing one netbook from another these days.

Strip Your Netbook of Bloat and Crapware

Computer manufacturers love to stockpile their pristine machines with all sorts of crapware. Fortunately, for the most part, netbook manufacturers aren’t too extreme with this practice. Given the already underpowered nature of the machines they sell, we’d imagine they’re paranoid about bogging it down with too much crapware. Nonetheless, it’s still worth your time to give your netbook a solid run through the decrapification-gauntlet. Photo by Fabio Bruna.


You can dig through the bloatware and delete it manually, but some bloatware—we’re looking at you Norton Anti-Virus trial!—is a huge pain to remove by hand. Fortunately applications have been created that are specifically tailored to giving bloatware the boot, like PC Decrapifier—seen in the screenshot above. PC Decrapifier is great for any new computer including netbooks and will help you get rid of applications like Norton Anti-Virus, Microsoft Office Trial Edition, and other annoyances.

One caveat regarding gutting the crapware from your new netbook: Although 90 percent of the junk that is installed is in fact junk, be careful not to delete software that actually does something useful. For example, on my Asus Eee netbook there were two very similar programs with similar Eee branded names. One was a useful aggressive battery monitoring application designed to squeeze even more life out of my 6-cell battery and the other was a fairly useless application dock only for Eee netbook apps. Had I blanket nuked all the installed apps, I’d have kicked out the useful battery tool with the rest of the junk.

Once you’ve booted the factory-fresh crapware off your netbook, it’s really important to keep things clean for optimal future performance. If a little bit of crapware and software creep slows down your beefy desktop a tiny bit, a little on your netbook will definitely gum up the works. Make sure to install an application like CCleanera favorite among Lifehacker readers—and run it on a schedule to keep things clean.

Learn to Love Full-Screen Mode and Keyboard Shortcuts


You might have a nice spacious monitor at home and never even think to switch to full screen mode, but on a netbook using full screen mode is an absolute must. The screenshot above shows a comparison between running Firefox in regular mode and running Firefox in fullscreen mode, displaying the Lifehacker homepage. Between the title bar, menu bar, tabbed sites, and the Windows start bar, around 40% of the screen gets chewed up. The same kind of situation exists when you load popular word processors like Microsoft Word and other office applications. Most software designers are simply not designing for small screens anymore; netbooks generally have a 1024×600 resolution, which is nearly 200 pixels shorter than the already quite small 1024×768 standard monitor size that most designers keep in mind when creating toolbar and site layouts.

Unfortunately no standard exists for which a keyboard shortcut will switch an application to full screen mode. Check the menu bar in your application or hit up Google with a “myapplication fullscreen shortcut” query to find it. The full-screen shortcuts for a few common applications are: Firefox/IE/Opera/Chrome – F11 (press again to return to normal view) and Microsoft Office – ALT+V+U (press ESC to return to normal view).

In addition to searching for individual and specific keyboard shortcuts to help with things like full-screen mode, it’s worthwhile to extend your knowledge of shortcuts even further—typing on a reduced size keyboard and mousing on a small trackpad can be rough on your hands. If you extend the range of your Google queries from just the keyboard shortcut to something like “myapplication without a mouse” or “myapplication keyboard shortcut guide” you’ll find gems like this guide to using the Opera web browser completely sans-mouse—or our own guide to mouse-less Firefox. Select Applications with a Netbook-Centric Attitude


Selecting applications for a netbook is a lot like packing for a camping trip. When you pack for a camping trip you select things for your pack that are efficient and lightweight versions of things you use every day at home, and you also pack things that are distinctly related to camping that you’d never use at home. For example, you may use Firefox loaded down with 1,001 extensions on your quad-core home computer but opt to run Firefox with only one or two critical extensions or Google Chrome on your netbook. Also, just like with camping, selecting lightweight tools that are multifunction is valuable. Why use a bloated media application when something snappy and light like open-source VLC can take care of all your movie and music needs? In the same vein, look for ways to ditch software that is known for being bloated and resource hungry, like swapping out Adobe-gonna-eat-all-y’RAMs-Reader with FoxIt Reader. If you’re unsure where to start when it comes to selecting lightweight software, you might want to check out past Lifehacker Hive Five topics. Lifehacker readers tend to gravitate towards the fastest and lightest-weight solutions even when constraints like using a netbook aren’t brought into the equation.

Aside from searching out lightweight versions of applications your normally use, the netbook also benefits from applications you’d likely never use on a desktop computer.

Netbooks, for example, make pretty handy ebooks. They’re full color, they have no annoying DRM or restrictions, and they’re lightweight with a long battery life. I’ve been experimenting with using my netbook as an ebook reader and don’t have any complaints to log. If your netbook doesn’t already support screen rotation, you can easily remedy that situation by downloading EeeRotate—in use in the screenshot above. The tiny application allows you to rotate your screen using CTRL+ALT+RIGHT (you can rotate it so that you hold the netbook with the screen on your right or left hand side) and it reverses the axis of the mouse so you can still use your mouse without hassle. Pressing CTRL+ALT+UP will return the screen to normal.

If you’re a Gmail user, you’ll definitely want to enable Offline Gmail to allow you to compose emails in Gmail when you’re between wireless hotspots and unable to access the net. If you’re not a Gmail user it’s worth downloading an full-fledged email client like Thunderbird and configuring it to use your web-based email so you can enjoy the same functionality.

Even if your keyboard chops are up to par, it’s still a pain to launch applications on a netbook. Although I’ve yet to install Launchy—as much as I love it!—on my main Windows 7 desktop, most netbooks run Windows XP and Launchy can go a long way towards making application launching pleasant on the tiny keyboard and touchpad. Being able to shuttle files between your main workstation and your netbook, as well as keeping them backed up, is a must. Dropbox is a valuable addition to your netbook for this task. It’s lightweight, it’s fast, and for most users the free account is more than adequate. While writing this article I used Dropbox multiple times to easily toss screenshots and installation files between my netbook and desktop and as I took notes about the netbook—on the netbook!—I saved the .TXT file to Dropbox. Netbooks serve as an excellent go-between tool for lightweight and portable notetaking and web browsing, especially with the proper tweaking and software selection. While our list of tweaks and software suggestions is long, it’s certainly not exhaustive. Up Close and Personal With the Pixel Qi Display

Pixel Qi’s low-power displays that can switch between color LCD screens and e-reader-like black-and-white displays was labeled vaporware in 2009.

But the company silenced its critics by offering some hands-on time at the Consumer Electronics Show with the screens that are already in production.

“We are going mainstream in 2010 in millions of units and we are leading with netbooks,” says Mary Lou Jepsen, founder of Pixel Qi.

Conventional LCD screens offer bright, glossy images but consume too much power. The images they display are also not visible in sunlight. It’s one of the reasons electronic paper, a low-power black-and-white display that can be seen clearly outdoors during the day, has become a rage among e-book readers. Pixel Qi promises to bridge both worlds.

Pixel Qi’s 3Qi display operates in three modes: a full-color LCD transmissive mode; a low-power, sunlight-readable, reflective e-paper mode; and a transflective mode, which makes the LCD display visible in sunlight.

The company is currently producing displays in the 10-inch screen size. They will debut on netbooks. Last year, research firm ABI expected 35 million netbooks to be shipped. That makes it easier to predict demand for these devices and produce displays in large volumes for them, Jepsen says. By the end of the year, Pixel Qi’s screens are expected to be in e-readers and tablets.

Here’s a closer look at the screen:

Transmissive mode:

Pixel Qi display’s transmissive mode is similar to how traditional LCD screens work.

An image on the display is composed of millions of individual pixels. Each pixel is divided into three sub-pixels: red, green and blue. Controlling the intensity of light available to each of these sub-pixels helps produce a color image.

Now, each of the subpixels are further divided into transmissive and reflective modes. In transmissive mode, the screen is primarily lit from the rear using a backlight. When the light reaches the LCD panel, it passes through polarizers that allow it to light up the required combination of subpixels.

The resultant reflected light is picked up by the eye. Pixel Qi’s full-color 10-inch screen has a resolution of 1024 by 600 pixels. It almost feels like a conventional LCD display though the colors aren’t as saturated and the image isn’t as vivid.

Still it is a remarkable sight especially when you know that with the press of a button that screen can be transformed into a black-and-white electronic paper display.

At its peak, the Pixel Qi’s display consumes far less power than conventional LCDs. Peak power is 2.5 watts.  Turn off the backlight and you can shave 2 watts off, giving you an extremely low-power display.

Reflective mode:

With the press of a button (Fn + F2 key sequence during the demo), the screen switches to a black-and-white display that evokes the E Ink screen seen on the Kindle, Sony Reader and Barnes & Noble Nook.

In the reflective mode, the backlight is turned off  and the ambient light hits a layer of mirror on the display that reflects it back completely. The result is a much higher resolution than in the LCD mode and a screen that plays just off the grayscale rather than creating colors.

In this mode, Pixel Qi’s display looks similar to the electronic paper displays. The key point here, the company says, is that in reflective mode though the screen looks and acts like a E Ink display, it still uses the LCD technology and is cleverly engineered it to mimic an E Ink-like feel.

But unlike an E Ink display, even in the reflective mode, Pixel Qi’s display burns power. E Ink displays don’t consume power while you are reading the text on the screen. It just draws power when you turn the page.

Pixel Qi’s display keeps refreshing at 60 Hz per second so it can’t offer the week-long battery life that an E Ink-based reader does. Pixel Qi says it’s working on displays with lower refresh rates (such as 30 Hz and less), but it isn’t there yet.

Transflective mode:

Play Slumdog Millionaire and stand in bright sunlight and you can still get a pretty good idea of what’s going on on the screen. Pixel Qi’s display scores over its rivals because of the transflective mode that allows viewers to use the LCD-like display even in bright sunlight.

Traditional LCD screens tend to go dark when turned on in direct sunshine. Pixel Qi solves the problem by adding a special layer to the display. The layer is a partial mirror since a part of it transmits the light and part of it reflects the light.

“It’s like a typical mirror layer found in most displays but with holes punched out in it,” says Jennifer Colegrove, an analyst with research firm DisplaySearch. This allows for a composite mode where users can adjust the backlight and still see the LCD screen with reasonable brightness.

If the details about how the displays work are a little hazy, then it’s because Pixel Qi has been very tight-lipped about how it has re-engineered traditional LCD displays to create a screen that can operate in three modes. Pixel Qi has filed more than 20 patents around the technology.

The company is now working on creating touch overlays for its displays to turn them into touchscreens, Jepsen says.
