Convert Firefox Bookmarks & Feeds To IE7

Convert Firefox Bookmarks & Feeds To IE7

So you have been a long time Firefox user but you really like Internet Explorer 7 and want to switch, huh? Well, there is now a conversion utility available that Microsoft should have made themselves. It will convert both your Firefox bookmarks/favorites and your feeds and send them to IE7.

If Firefox is installed on your system then it will be extremely easy because it will find your bookmarks for you, but if it is not installed you can manually browse for the bookmarks.html file which is located in Firefox’s profile folder. I haven’t heard of any information from Microsoft that said they will be making this feature available themselves but it should definitely be included with the import process. Also, I wonder if Firefox has any plans to not only import Internet Explorer 7 Favorites but also the RSS Feeds? That would make the transition much easier for new users.

Flock Releases Customized Browser for Fashion & Entertainment Enthusiasts

This article was written on July 24, 2008 by CyberNet.

Flock has always been focused on the social side of the web, and there’s no browser that integrates better with all of the popular social networks. They have decided to take it one step further by offering a special edition of their browser that is targeted towards fashion and entertainment enthusiasts that adore the color pink.

When you first fire up the Flock Gloss Edition browser you’ll probably be taken back by it’s vast use of pink. But don’t be deceived because the skin isn’t the only thing that has changed. When you go digging into the RSS feeds and bookmarks you’ll see that they’ve already taken the liberty of populating them with the most popular fashion, celebrity news, lifestyle, shopping, and magazine websites from around the web.

The Flock Gloss Edition is supposed to be more fun for those interested in this type of thing, and the Flock team describes it best when they say “Your friends are always there – just like celebrities in rehab.” You can download the Flock Gloss Edition here if it sounds like something you or your better half would enjoy.

Note: This is still the version of Flock that is based on Firefox 2, not Firefox 3.

AVG 8 Free Available, Not Bad Actually

This article was written on April 25, 2008 by CyberNet.

avg 8 free-4.png

We were getting quite a few tips over the last day regarding the new version of AVG free that was just released. As you might recall AVG 8.0 Pro was made available several months ago, and it is a pretty comprehensive security suite. It wasn’t bad, but to me it seemed pretty bloated.

Now the free version of AVG 8.0 is available, and I gave it a whirl real quick to see what it all included. I actually like the free version better than the paid version because it seems a lot simpler. It includes the antivirus and anti-spyware portions which are very important, and excludes the anti-spam, firewall, and anti-rootkit. The parts it excludes are things most people can live without out.

There are a few things that actually really impressed me though. The first being that I was able to install AVG 8 Free and get it running without ever being required to restart my computer. That’s a huge plus in my book because having to restart after installing a program can really be a pain.

And then there is memory usage. To my surprise AVG 8 Free was pretty light on its toes. After running it for about 15-minutes it was only using up about 1.8MB. When I started to perform a full system scan the process took up about 18MB, and used a little over 20% of my processor consistently. Not bad at all, and my system still felt very responsive.

If you’re already using AVG then I think it’s worth taking the upgrade, but I don’t think this offers a whole lot to grab new new users if they’re already sitting happy with Avast or another free antivirus solution. The new interface is definitely way better than AVG 7 though.

Thanks to everyone for the tips!

DeskSpace – Stunning 3D Virtual Desktop Cube on Windows

This article was written on September 19, 2007 by CyberNet.

DeskSpace

You may remember an application called Yod’m that we wrote about back in March. It brought the famous 3D Linux virtual desktop manager over to the Windows side, but it was pretty rough around the edges. Well, I’m proud to say that a lot of work has been done to make it a lot better, but there’s a catch.

Otaku Software, the creators of the popular TopDesk application, snatched up the Yod’m developer shortly after the free version was released. Now to get the software, renamed to DeskSpace, you’ll need to plop down $19.95 for use beyond the 14 day trial. It might be worth it after you checkout the features:

  • Work and play on multiple desktops.
  • Display multiple desktops in stunning 3D.
  • Quickly switch between desktops using the mouse and keyboard.
  • Drag windows between desktops by moving them to the sides of the screen.
  • Display desktops in 3D on multiple monitors.
  • Configure the hot keys and mouse buttons used to switch between desktops, and how DeskSpace displays and manages desktop.
  • Use DeskSpace in multiple languages.

Personally I’ve installed virtual desktop managers before, and often times forget to use them. For that reason I didn’t even try this out, and definitely wouldn’t spend the money on it. Although I know it would impress a lot of my friends. :)

Here’s a quick video I grabbed that shows DeskSpace in action:

Convert Images to ASCII Art, in Color!

This article was written on October 10, 2007 by CyberNet.

Image to ASCII Converter

Being the geeks that we are I’m sure you’ve tried at one time or another to create some sweet ASCII art. When you look at some of the ASCII art that has been done it almost looks like it should be simple, but there is an insane amount of time that is spent getting the spacing and character density just right.

You can now be the envy of all your geeky followers friends by generating your very own gallery of ASCII art. We’re not talking something as simple as the last trick we showed you either, instead this is a full-blown software application. It’s called ASCII Generator, and I found out about it today while doing our Daily Downloads. After I looked into it I knew that I had to give it a shot.

The nice thing is that ASCII Generator is an open source project, and doesn’t require any installation to run it. Once you have loaded an image into the generator it will pump a bunch of text into the main content area. There is the “Size” option on the top toolbar that can be used to decide how many characters are on every line, and the more characters you have the more detail you’ll see.

Once you’ve got all of the settings adjusted you’ll be able to save your artwork as an image or text file. The sweet thing is that it also adds color to the text to help give the ASCII art a more photo-like effect.

Below you’ll see an image that I converted of an extremely colorful garden. I set the Size as large as it would go so that I could capture as much detail in the photo as possible. Think about how long it would have taken to make something like that without the generator. :D

Turn a Windows Mobile Device into a Wireless Router

This article was written on January 10, 2008 by CyberNet.

Tethered Wireless Modem Lifehacker found a really cool program called WMWifiRouter that will let you transform a Windows Mobile Device into a wireless router with little configuration! With that you would be able to create a ad-hoc Wi-Fi connection to the device so that it can be used as a modem. It’s a simple solution to get wireless Internet on your laptop without purchasing additional hardware or data plans.

The developer has put together a small tutorial on how to get WMWifiRouter installed and running, and it seems pretty straight forward. Here’s a list of the requirements for successfully using the free application:

  • Windows Mobile 5 – SmartPhone Edition or PocketPC (with phone functionality) Edition OR
  • Windows Mobile 6 – Standard or Professional (NOT Classic!)
  • A WiFi connection on your device
  • A (cellular) data connection on your device
  • Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) installed (and working) on your device

Once you have everything working it should become an effortless process each time you need to use WMWifiRouter. In most cases you can even turn off the screen on your device and the app will continue chugging away, thereby conserving some precious power.

Warning: Be careful with how much you use your data plan, because we all know how strict the service providers are on excessive use.

CyberNotes: Solutions For Storing Your Images While Traveling

This article was written on September 23, 2006 by CyberNet.

CyberNotes
Weekend Warrior

When you’re traveling for a vacation and you’ve brought your camera along, you may run into the problem of where to put all of your pictures. Sure you could get another memory card, or even a bigger one, but there are other solutions out there that may be worth investing in or looking into.

– Laptop –

The most obvious solution, and perhaps the cheapest solution is to bring your laptop.  This would be the cheapest option if you already have a computer for other purposes.  Purchasing a laptop just to store photos isn’t necessary.  Of course, even if you have a laptop you may not want to have to worry about carrying it, losing it, or damaging it, etc.  This is where the other alternatives come into play.

Sony DVDirect MC1

Yet another solution is the Sony DVDirect MC1 (pictured).  With this device, you’re able to record digital images with the difference being that you don’t need a computer! Additionally, with the Sony DVDirect MC1, you can connect to a PC using USB 2.0. Prices are in the $200 range which may be worth it!

Apple iPod –

It seems that everyone is getting in on the iPod craze.  If you have an Apple iPod (video version), you can purchase an iPod camera link connector that will enable you to transfer your pictures directly to your camera.  Using an iPod is a lightweight solution for storing your images.

– SmartDisk FCD20 FotoChute 20GB Portable Digital Storage Device –

This SmartDisk FotoChute is self explanatory with 20GB of room for portable digital storage.  It’s pocket sized which makes it easy and convenient to you, and with lots of storage it provides you with the perfect way to store your photos when you’re on vacation or away from your computer for extended lengths of time.  Its’ retail price is listed as over $400.00 but you can generally find them on sale (here) for $99.00.

Whether you’re traveling for business or for fun, there are many different types of portable storage devices available to suit your needs. These devices range from your own laptop to an Apple iPod with varying prices as well.  With any of these devices, you’ll never have to worry about running out of room for all your photos again!

iTunes 7 Now Available For Download

This article was written on September 12, 2006 by CyberNet.

iTunes 7 Okay, we knew it was coming and Apple finally updated their iTunes site to reflect the newly released version 7! There is a whole slew of new features, but the overall interface is pretty much the same:

  • Movies
  • Cover Flow
  • Automatic Album Art
  • New User Interface
  • iPod Games
  • iPod Summary
  • Download Manager
  • Higher Video Resolution
  • Onscreen Video Controls
  • Multiple Libraries
  • Library Backup
  • Gapless Playback
  • Ratings and Parental Controls

So it is an impressive list of updates but it was definitely needed since Microsoft has Windows Media Player 11 also being released soon. There is still no word on Vista compatibility on iTunes 7 but I think I’ll give it a try later and see how it goes. Here’s hoping for the best. :)

Foxit Reader 2.0 Released – The Best PDF Reader!

This article was written on September 12, 2006 by CyberNet.

Foxit Reader Foxit Reader 2.0 has been released and it is just as great as the previous versions. If you are still stuck in the days of viewing PDF’s using Adobe Acrobat then it must be because you have never tried the free Foxit Reader.

The software is amazing from multiple aspects. Of course the most important feature that it has is the amazingly quick startup time. When I open a PDF it is on my screen for me to read in less than 5-seconds. Can’t beat that!

The second best thing is that you never have to install it. Just download the ZIP file, extract it, and run the EXE. I just drag the file into my Program Files folder and set it up to be my default PDF reader. There is no installation which means no mess!

So if you haven’t tried this PDF reader yet then I highly suggest you give it a whirl. There’s nothing to install so the worst thing that would happen is you download it, try it, and delete it. However, I have never come across someone that doesn’t like it.

uTorrent Now on your Mobile Device

This article was written on July 26, 2007 by CyberNet.

My favorite dedicated BitTorrent client has always been uTorrent, and with the new uTorrent mUI you’ll be able to control your Torrent downloads no matter where you are at. It is optimized for mobile devices, and works great on Opera Mini or on the iPhone. When you pull it up you’ll quickly be able to gain access to all of the important information regarding your current Torrents:

uTorrent mUI

While using uTorrent mUI you’ll be able to start, pause, stop and monitor your downloads. It also offers some additional info about every Torrent and a couple of settings you can change.

So how do you access it? You’ll need to have the WebUI plugin installed in uTorrent so that it is all setup for remote access. Then all you have to do is point your mobile browser to utorrentmui.com and you should see a login screen similar to the one pictured above.

It doesn’t require any installation on your mobile phone, but remember that this can only be used for tracking Torrents that you have already started to download. You can’t specify the link to a torrent and have it start, but I’m sure that will be a feature for a future version.

If you want to see what this is like, and whether it is going to work for you, head on over to this Opera Mini demo where you can login to your uTorrent and give it a shot.
