Portable Sudoku Makes It Easy To Play Anywhere

This article was written on August 30, 2006 by CyberNet.

Portable Sudoku Everyone is addicted to Sudoku and if you say you’re not addicted then you probably haven’t played it. Online versions have popped up all over the place to help people cope with their addiction. However, you don’t always have an Internet connection wherever you go.

Portable Sudoku may be your solution to feed the addiction. Stick this bad boy on your USB drive and you’ll be all set to get your game on. It has four difficulty levels just to make sure that even the Sudoku Grand Master would be challenged. You can even make little notes in the boxes by holding down shift and selecting a number.

If you have to run and don’t have time to finish your game there is no need to worry. It will automatically save your game when you close the program. Of course, for the cheaters there is also a “Solve Game” feature that will reveal the solution. Maybe just one peek wouldn’t hurt anything. :D

WordPress for iPhone: Ultimate Photo Blogging Tool?

This article was written on July 22, 2008 by CyberNet.

wordpress iphone.jpg

There are a lot of great applications that are coming through Apple’s App Store for both the iPhone and iPod Touch, but one of my new favorites would have to be the 100% free WordPress for iPhone. You might recall that TypePad users have had a blogging tool since day 1 of the App Store launch, and that program was also “free.” The catch, however, was that you are required to have a paid subscription to TypePad which is a minimum of $5 per month.

The WordPress application, on the other hand, will work with multiple WordPress.com accounts and any WordPress blogs you’ve setup on your own servers. The only requirement is that you be running WordPress 2.5.1 or higher.

How well does it work? It took me less than 30 seconds to get it setup on my iPhone, and it does almost everything that I would want from a mobile blogging client. You can add photos, manage existing posts, and even see a live preview of what it will look like on your blog using the embedded Safari browser.

One of the first things that popped into my head after using this is how great it would be for photo blogging on-the-go. You can snap a bunch of photos on your iPhone from within the WordPress software (or pull from your camera roll), write up a quick post explaining what the people are seeing in the images, and publish it to a blog. Want to restrict who can see the post? No problem, just password protect it right from the iPhone. To be honest I plan on creating a free WordPress.com blog just for posting photos in this way.

Right now there’s just one downside when using this for photo blogging. Images are uploaded at the medium resolution (640×480) which may or may not be something you want. In the future I’d like to see it offer a full resolution upload option, but the scaled down photos are faster to upload when you’re on-the-go.

Aside from that there are just a few other things I’d like to see this include:

  • Comment management – being able to approve/pull comments would be handy.
  • Search posts – right now you can see up to the most recent 50 posts on the blog, but that is it. At the very least you should be able to search through past posts, and possibly navigate through “pages” of recent posts.

Azureus 2.4.0.2 Ready For Download

Azureus 2.4.0.2 Ready For Download

Azureus is one of the most popular and most updated BitTorrent clients that are available. Just today they released the next version of Azureus with the build number 2.4.0.2! They have not put it on their official site yet, but it is on their SourceForge site. This build mostly just fixes some of the bugs in the previous build: “encryption bug fix, faster crash recovery hashing, fixed startup when config files are corrupted, and data transfer from slow peers improved”. I guess anything that can improve the transfer speeds are always welcomed so if you are an Azureus user then jump on over to the SourceForge link below and get the most up-to-date version!

New Live Installer, Live Writer, & Photo Gallery

This article was written on September 05, 2007 by CyberNet.

Windows Live Installer

It looks like Microsoft is pulling a Google and offering their most popular apps in a unified package. Well, it’s not exactly like the Google Pack because Microsoft is only including their own homegrown programs, whereas Google also includes some third-party software (such as Norton and Skype).

The site you’ll need to visit for the unified installer is http://get.live.com/wl/all. It is currently available (for me at least) with several new releases of their applications, such as Live Messenger 8.5, Live Writer, and Live Photo Gallery. Here’s everything that’s included:

  • Windows Live Mail (email)
  • NEW Windows Live Photo Gallery (photo management) – This is similar to the built-in Vista Photo Gallery, but it has some new enhancements. The great thing is that it is available on versions of Windows prior to Vista as well.
  • NEW Windows Live Writer (desktop blog publisher) – I haven’t been able to tell much of what’s new in this release, but the build number is 12.0.1277.816 and it’s labeled as “Version 2008″ instead of “1.0″. The only thing I’ve seen new so far is a built-in “Insert Video” option and the ability to justify text. I’ll make a separate post regarding this app when I get more information on the changes. UPDATE: Here’s a list of what’s new
  • Windows Live OneCare Family Safety (parental controls)
  • NEW Windows Live Messenger 8.5 (instant messenger)
  • Windows Live Toolbar (for your browser)

And here’s a video of how the entire process works:

Change Your Google Talk Status to Away

This article was written on October 29, 2007 by CyberNet.

I absolutely love Google Talk because of its simplicity, and the fact that I’ve got all of my friends using it is a huge plus. There is only one thing that I really dislike with the instant messenger, and it’s that I can’t change my status to away.

A free program called gAlwaysIdle is looking to solve that problem. It provides an option in the Google Talk right-click menu that will let you always have your status set to away, whether or not your are using your computer:

Google Talk Idle

It has three different modes that you can choose from:

  • Normal Idle – Uses the default Google Talk settings
  • Always Idle – You’re always set to idle
  • Never Idle – Makes sure you are never set to away even when you’re not at your computer

As you can see from the screenshot above I was using this on Vista, but anytime I tried to change the status I got a fatal error. The only way to get around this is to run Google Talk as an administrator, or to disable the User Account Control (UAC) all together. My guess is that this program adjusts registry settings on-the-fly, and without the proper permissions in will crash and burn. As soon as I ran Google Talk as an administrator it worked as expected.

I wish that Google Would just implement this feature themselves … it would be so much easier. ;)

EverNote 2.2 – Image Editor, GDS Integration, and More

This article was written on November 06, 2007 by CyberNet.

EverNote 2.2 EverNote is one of my favorite applications because of its advanced note taking capabilities. With it I’m able to clip important information from the web, write up grocery lists, keep track of things I need to do, and more.

The new EverNote 2.2 raises the bar even more by adding some highly anticipated features:

  • Improved search for printed and handwritten text within images
  • Auto-import snapshots from your camera phone
  • Basic image editing right inside EverNote
    EverNote Image Editor
  • Google Desktop Search (GDS) compatibility – all searches using Google Desktop will include your notes
  • Universal Clipper with image markup
  • Open, manage, and edit notes in separate windows

The advanced version of EverNote ($49.95) includes searching within images, handwriting recognition, shape correction, and digital ink support. You’ll get to use all of those features for your first 60 days, and after that EverNote will revert to a fully functional mode without those features. I think it’s safe to say that if you don’t have a Tablet PC the free version will suffice.

Heads Up: The download is 56.5MB in size, which is rather large.

Fedora Core 6 Released – Sweet New Theme

This article was written on October 25, 2006 by CyberNet.

Fedora Core 6

From the makers of the ever-popular Red Hat Linux comes the new (free) release of Fedora Core 6! It has all kinds of amazing goodies packed with it but here are my favorites:

One thing that they also mention is that it comes with the latest releases of the most popular software. They specifically mention Firefox but I’ll give you a heads up that this version of Fedora was finalized before Firefox 2 was released, so you’ll have to download it separately if you actually want the latest Firefox.

They also say that there are “extensive performance improvements” which is good to hear. A few months back when I tried Fedora it seemed so sluggish that it actually made Windows feel like a Ferrari. Okay, maybe not that bad but it was pretty slow.

The popularity of the Fedora download must have been a little unexpected because their official homepage is replaced with a low-bandwidth version. You can, however, visit the Fedora Wiki for more information regarding this release and OSDir.com has a great screenshot gallery posted.

I am currently in the process of downloading this from one of their several mirrors that are available. Unfortunately it is 5 ISO images that you have to download to burn onto CD’s…too bad there isn’t just one DVD ISO. I’ll probably end up installing Fedora in a virtual machine before I put it on a partition just so I don’t waste the 5 CD’s and find out that I don’t like it.

The Best Free File Renamer!

This article was written on September 08, 2007 by CyberNet.

File Renamer

It had just occurred to me that I had never written about one of my favorite free file renamer applications for Windows. It’s called ReNamer, and I’ll warn you that it’s not a program for the weak at heart. It’s loaded with powerful features, and that’s one of the reasons I love it!

ReNamer lets you add a series of rules that it will follow for renaming files in bulk. I use this on a regular basis for renaming photos so that all of the file names don’t look like the generic DSC0000018.JPG or IMG0002388.JPG. With ReNamer I can sequentially rename the photos so that they all actually have a descriptive name.

This is the most powerful free file renamer that I’ve come across, and I’m sure you can find ways to rename just about anything using the different types of rules that are available:

File Renamer Rules

I had thought about putting together a guide on how to use the software, but I was already beaten to it. There is a Quick Start Guide (2 pages) and a Beginner’s Guide (27 pages) available in PDF format on the file ReNamer download page. The Beginner’s Guide covers just about everything you would want to know, and it has a bunch of screenshots to walk you through the all the steps.

Oh, and I almost forgot to mention one of ReNamer’s best features. You can download it with an installer or as a standalone 2.3MB program. I’ve thrown this on my USB drive, and carry it around with me wherever I go!

Download File ReNamer

Windows Tip: You can sequentially rename files in Windows Explorer by highlighting the respect files and pressing the F2 key. While this is convenient it doesn’t offer any sort of customizability.

Windows Desktop Search 3 Gets Released

This article was written on October 25, 2006 by CyberNet.

Windows Desktop Search 3 Back when I was running Windows XP (now I’m on Windows Vista RC2) one thing that I really loved was the Windows Desktop Search 3. At that time it was still in the Beta stage but it looks like they have finally gotten around to releasing it.

It is similar to what you can receive using the Google Desktop Search but this feels less cluttered to me. The clean interface and extremely quick indexing reminds me of the search feature that I have become addicted to in Windows Vista. If you are looking for a sidebar and all kinds of gadgets though this is not what you’ll want…it indexes and searches but that’s all.

Previous versions of Windows Desktop Search have not worked with 64-bit machines but this one will! Here are the direct download links for all of the different versions:

Download Windows Live Apps Early

This article was written on November 06, 2007 by CyberNet.

Windows Live Installer In about 11 hours Microsoft will be launching their Windows Live Wave 2, which is a collection of applications offered at no cost. You can download the new installer now even though the “wave” of updated programs won’t be released until later today.

There has been no mention of new features for the programs included with Windows Live Wave 2, but most of the apps have new version numbers indicating that they must at least include bug fixes. All of the programs have also had the Beta tag removed. Here is a list of the apps you’ll be able to install:

  • Windows Live Messenger – chat with your friends
  • Windows Live Writer – write blog posts
  • Windows Live Photo Gallery – manage your photos
  • Windows Live Mail – check your email
  • Windows Live Toolbar – search the Internet
  • Windows Live Family Safety – control what your kids look at

One of the changes users have been noticing is that the programs finally support 64-bit Windows! This was a long time coming, and it was a big point of criticism when Microsoft released their last Beta. The installer is still a bit slow, which is a big disappointment (took me 20 minutes to update my 3 programs).

I highly recommend the Windows Live Photo Gallery, which I’ve been using a lot lately to manage my photos. It has a slick interface that almost everyone will find intuitive. Oh, and the built-in Flickr uploader is an awesome tool for the Flickr users out there.
