Opera 9.02 Officially Released

This article was written on September 22, 2006 by CyberNet.

Opera 9.02We knew it was coming soon and it is finally here: Opera 9.02! The list of changes is actually longer than I thought it was going to be but here are a few good ones to point out:

  • Fixed quick find field in Windows panel.
  • Fixed high CPU usage while downloading big emails.
  • Properties can now be accessed within the contacts and bookmarks panel after deleting items.
  • Image attachments can now be saved using the context menu.
  • Fix for playing sound clips on Amazon.
  • Multiple stability improvements, including a stability issue on my.yahoo.com.
  • Improved handling of downloads when the disk is full.
  • Improved handling of Web site logins on slow connections.
  • Windows: Fix to allow opera to be set as default browser using the prompt at startup.
  • Windows: Fix for attaching read-only files in mail.
  • Windows: Support for the Windows XP Media Center Edition remote control.

They also fixed a critical security flaw which would allow a forged SSL certificate to be accepted. So if you haven’t upgraded that is even more of a reason to go on over and download the latest version. Keep up the good work Opera!

Total Commander 7: The Ultimate Windows Explorer Replacement?

This article was written on June 08, 2007 by CyberNet.

Total Commander (formerly Windows Commander) is a Windows Explorer replacement that has just about all of the features you could ever want. Now after more than 7 months in the works version 7 has been released with a lot of great features, including a slightly new look.

Total Commander 7

First and foremost I would like to add that this is not a free application. It does cost $34, and for your money you’ll receive the latest version on CD along with a quick reference card that you can use to lookup some of the functions and keystrokes that make the software so popular. Then you get free lifetime updates to all future versions.

Now I don’t own a copy of this software, and to be honest today was the first time that I had installed it. However, I know a lot of people who swear by it because they have been using it for upwards of 10 years, which is why I wanted to write about it. Here are some of the most talked up features that Total Commander has:

  • Comparing files with the built-in text editor
  • Synchronize directories
  • Split/combine files
  • Search for duplicate files
  • Bulk rename files
  • Built-in FTP manager
  • Can ZIP files, and can unpack ZIP, ARJ, LZH, TAR, GZ,CAB, RAR and ACE files.
  • Lots of addons/plugins available

So what’s new in version 7? Here’s a short version of the list that’s quite long:

  • Separate background color can be set for odd and even lines
  • Compare by content now allows to edit files, and to re-synchronize manually
  • File operation logging
  • Multi-rename-tool: Allow to edit target names
  • More options in copy overwrite dialog: Compare by content, Rename target, automatic rename, copy all smaller or all larger
  • Sort by additional columns, e.g. by size, then by date/time
  • Auto-complete path in command line, current directory, copy dialog etc.
  • Use Shift+Del to remove unwanted entries from various comboboxes: Command line,
  • Secure FTP over SSL/TLS.
  • Custom user-defined commands for main menu and hotkeys
  • Alias commands for the command line for internal commands or external programs
  • When a copy/move/delete/create directory operation fails due to insufficient rights, ask user whether he wants to copy as administrator. Also allow a user to read from an inaccessible directory if he knows the administrator password.
  • Search on FTP servers

So if you’ve used Total Commander before, or own it, let us know what you think about it. My experience is limited to about the 30-minutes that I played with it today so your personal opinion is highly welcomed. I’m just not sure if the application is worth the $34 considering that I have individual programs which can do much of what Total Commander includes (compare files, rename files, FTP, zipping files, etc…).

Stretch Dual Monitor Wallpapers

This article was written on September 11, 2007 by CyberNet.

Desktop Wallpaper Multiple monitor setups are becoming increasingly abundant these days, and I for one couldn’t imagine not having two monitors. I have a 24" Dell (1920×1200 resolution) and a 15" laptop screen (1680×1050 resolution) that I place side-by-side as seen here. The thing is that getting the wallpapers to effortlessly flow across from one monitor to another could be better in Windows, or maybe you would like to set a different background for each screen?

Give a warm welcome to a free app called DisplayFusion. It has a host of features not only for managing the backgrounds on multiple monitors, but also for moving windows from one screen to another using hotkeys:

  • Use a different wallpaper on each monitor (either a picture or solid color)
  • Stretch a wallpaper across all monitors (either a picture or color)
  • Integrated Flickr image search & download
  • Drag maximized windows by their title bars to other screens
  • Easily manage application windows with customizable hotkeys:
    • Move windows to the next monitor
    • Move windows to the next monitor and maximize them
    • Move windows to center of the screen
    • Move windows to center of the screen and size it to 75% of the work area
    • Tile windows along the top, bottom, left or right side
    • Maximize windows so that they span all monitors

For being less than a month old I would have to say that this free app already feels pretty mature. The download is pretty small (just 326KB), but it does require a quick setup.

Tip: DualMonitorBackgrounds.com is a good source for the wide wallpapers.

Opera 9.23 Released – Mum’s the Word on Opera 9.5

This article was written on August 15, 2007 by CyberNet.

Computer Repair DoctorOpera 9.23 has been released and is ready for consumption by the general public. A majority of the things fixed in this release are credited to Mozilla’s jsfunfuzz tool that was released at Black Hat about two-weeks ago. The tool found four bugs in Opera that caused crashes, and one "highly severe" security vulnerability:

  • Fixed four crash bugs found using Mozilla’s jsfunfuzz tool.
  • Fixed a stability issue with Speed Dial.
  • Fixed a critical JavaScript security issue discovered with Mozilla’s jsfunfuzz tool: "A virtual function call on an invalid pointer that may reference data crafted by the attacker can be used to execute arbitrary code."
  • Windows Vista Only: Scrolling problem with some Microsoft mice fixed.

I’m happy that Mozilla was kind enough to release the tool for everyone to use, and I’m extremely happy that people are actually using it! As I stated last time, jsfunfuzz has caught an astonishing 280 bugs in Firefox’s JavaScript engine, and more than two-thirds of those have already been fixed. Thanks to jsfunfuzz, and the creator Jesse Ruderman, the Web has just gotten a little safer.

Now I’m hoping to see test builds of Opera 9.5 soon, and from the looks of it the Opera Desktop Team isn’t taking kindly to comments regarding future versions of the browser. Almost all comments that mention Opera 9.5 are said to be off-topic, and are consequently being removed. I’m sure it is getting annoying for them when every other comment is along the lines of "can’t wait for 9.5," but that is just their community getting excited for the release. Now commenters are referring to it as "The-Build-Which-Should-Not-Be-Named," or TBWSNBN for short. ;) I understand why it is being done, but I was pretty disappointed when I saw my comment get removed as well.

So now I can’t wait to get my hands on TBWSNBN!

Azureus 2.5.0.0

The new Azureus 2.5.0.0 has finally emerged and is ready for you to download it. It has been a few months since I have seen even a minor update so this is highly welcomed. Here’s what you’ll find new in this release:

  • Send to a friend – A wizard to simplify sending a link to content to a friend or to embed in a web page (e.g. a blog).
  • Auto upload speed – This feature controls your upload speed based on the latency of your Internet connection as gauged by pinging other members of the Distributed Database.
  • OSX: Open .torrent files into Azureus via Finder/Desktop/etc.
  • ‘Do not download’ files handled more consistently with respect to download completion.
  • Renaming of a download directories.
  • Moving of data files on torrent removal from Azureus.
  • Signed updates and plug-ins for improved security.
  • Interface improvements – more information: date added, idle times, new info view, file piece view; more per-torrent options.
  • Debug information generator.

If you already have Azureus installed then you can easily upgrade by going to the Help menu and selecting “Check for Updates.” Okay, after you get it up and running you will be all set to download those torrents, you know, for the software and music that isn’t illegal. ;)

Windows Desktop Search 3 Beta 2 Brings The Heat

This article was written on August 22, 2006 by CyberNet.

Windows Desktop Search If you have used Windows Vista then maybe you have noticed how great the search feature is. I know I have and it looks like the Microsoft search team is really thinking with their heads.

The new Windows Desktop Search 3 Beta 2 is actually available as a search mechanism compared to the Beta 1 back in May that was only offered as an add-in for Outlook 2007 and OneNote 2007. Let me be the first to say that the indexing speeds are the fastest that I have seen out of all the desktop search programs that I have tried.

Ahhh, but those people who have 64-bit machines have never been able to use Windows Desktop Search…but they can now! This is the first version that is compatible with both Windows XP and Server 2003 x64 computers.

Brandon who works on the Search Technology team for Microsoft said thatthe engine and API are essentially the same as what’s in Vista RC1 (most of the binaries are in fact identical) and the builds are very close.” Hey, if they find something in Vista that can add more value to XP then I highly welcome it.

The only thing that I don’t like about this desktop search application (and most others for that matter) is having the “Search Web” button. I am sure that a majority of people may like having that button but I would prefer to see that as an option so that I could remove it if I choose. The reason I am not fond of that button is because I sometimes find myself accidentally hitting the wrong button which gets annoying after the first few times.

Free Downloads: Far Cry, Prince of Persia, Rayman, and Ghost Recon

This article was written on September 03, 2007 by CyberNet.

farcry It looks like ad-supported games could be the new way for developers to prevent older games from becoming extinct. Well, at least that’s the route that Ubisoft is taking on four of their popular computer games.

I’ve posted the download links for Far Cry, Ghost Recon, Prince of Persia, and Rayman Raving Rabbids below. Most of them are pretty big downloads (1GB+) so you may want to get them overnight.

From what I’ve been reading the in-game advertising isn’t too noticeable in these particular games, and I wonder how successful they will actually be. We’ve analyzed this type of advertising before, and despite some downfalls it might have I hope more and more companies will be bringing their classic games out of the vault. After all, Rockstar did it with Grand Theft Auto 1 and 2 earlier this year.

If you’ve got some extra bandwidth to burn head on over and download these great games (Ghost Recon seems to be working now and then):

uTorrent 1.7 Now in a Stable Form

This article was written on July 13, 2007 by CyberNet.

uTorrent 1.7 was released today after several months in the making, and after being bought out by BitTorrent back in December 2006. Fear that the tiny little BitTorrent downloader would become a bloated sibling like it’s new older brother can be put to rest. This is the same ol’ uTorrent that we have all come to know and love…except with some notable new features.

uTorrent

Here’s what’s new in uTorrent 1.7:

  • Full Vista compatibility
  • Option to update to Beta versions of uTorrent
  • Upload rate can be automatically limited
  • Find local peers on the same network as you
  • No more 65,536 piece limit on torrents, of course I don’t think I’ve ever downloaded a torrent with that many items.
  • And there is a whole lot more…

The coolest thing in this version is that there is no longer a separate download for both the standalone and installer. They combined the two of them into one small 218KB download. Now when you go to run the file it will ask whether you want to install uTorrent or just run it without creating any shortcuts. It’s a simple and effective solution, and for that reason I love it.

So all of you who loved uTorrent in the past…don’t worry, it’s still the same just with a few added features and a lot of bug fixes. For the time being I would consider it to be bloat-free, but that doesn’t vouch for where the project could be headed in the future.

The next big thing that will be coming for uTorrent is a Mac OS X version. A few weeks ago TorrentFreak got their hands on a pre-alpha build and snapped a bunch of screenshots of it. They said that it made a great first impression, and that a public Beta will probably be available soon.

Get the Windows 7 Taskbar for XP

This article was written on September 23, 2009 by CyberNet.

viglance.jpg

arrow Windows Windows only arrow
One of my favorite features in Windows 7 has to be the redesigned Taskbar. The entire user experience is so smooth, and I think they really went down the right path with it. At work I’m stuck on XP, and I went looking for a way that I could get a lot of the same functionality as what Windows 7 offers.

That’s when I came across the free ViGlance. It’s a rather lightweight app (uses about 10MB of memory when running) that simulates the Windows 7 Taskbar. What I like is that it doesn’t replace the entire Taskbar in XP. Instead it replaces just the portion where the Taskbar buttons normally reside, and leaves the System Tray, Quick Launch, and other native sections untouched.

Here are some of the features:

  • Pin your favorite applications so that they serve as a shortcut when they aren’t running.
  • Hovering or clicking on an icon with multiple instances running will show thumbnails of each window, and you can then select the one you want. If just one instance of the app is running when you click on the icon it will instead minimize/restore the window depending on the window’s current state.
  • Drag and drop the icons in the order you want them to appear.

I expected this app to be nice, but I figured after using it for a week that I would have kicked it to the curb because of annoyances I would find. Surprisingly the features that are implemented are done pretty well. For example, I was wondering what would happen when someone sent me an instant message… how would ViGlance alert me? In a case like that the icon lights up orange as you can see in the screenshot above.

If you do decide to use this there’s just one thing that I want to give you a heads up about. When I first started using it none of the icons would show up, and I was rather perplexed. After some searching around I was finally able to fix the problem by switching my computer from 16-bit color quality to 32-bit in my display properties. I’m not sure why this prevents the icons from displaying, but it does. Aside from that I’d say it’s becoming a solid app, and a great solution for anyone who’s stuck using XP.

This article was written on December 13, 2006 by CyberNet.

Skype 3 Moments ago Skype made two big announcements that will surely satisfy all Skype users. First off, and probably the biggest, is that their new Skype 3 has been released. According the the release notes here are the new features and changes:

  • Features:
    • Public chatrooms
    • Extras Manager
    • Sound Settings Widget
    • Rich Mood Messages
    • Connection Wizard
  • Changes:
    • Video quality improvements on low bitrate (128 kbit upload links)
    • Updated Extras Manager
    • Updated Internet Explorer and FireFox plugins
    • UI redesigned
    • Improved Video device detection
    • New Language files
    • New button for ‘leave’ in chat window
    • Do More Menu’ active even when Extras Manager not running
    • Updated all translations
    • Extras Manager updated

Besides for those new features and changes there are also a ton of bug fixes, but the list would have been way too long if I tried to list those. I still haven’t brought myself to try out Skype even with the new version but I have heard a lot of good things about it. I just don’t know anyone who uses it that I could chat with and Google Talk seems to get the job done for me.

Over the past year Skype users have had the joy of free outgoing calls from your PC to any landline phone in the United States and Canada. I can’t even count how many people I have heard rave about the greatness of that feature, but with the new year quickly approaching you will have to start paying for that service. To help ease the pain of the cost Skype is offering the unlimited outgoing calls package for just $14.95 for one year of the service which is 50% off their normal price (offer good until January 31, 2007).
