Compiz Fusion Stackswitch: Another Application Switcher

This article was written on June 20, 2008 by CyberNet.

Compiz Fusion on Linux has definitely received a lot of attention because of their innovative thinking, and the latest thing to come out of their lab is a plugin called Stackswitch. To put it simply it is an application switcher, but it comes packed with pizzazz. Once it’s activated it angles all of your windows so that it appears as though they are laying flat on a table that’s sitting in front of you, and the window you currently have selected stands up straight to draw more attention. Some aspects are also configurable, such as the angle at which the windows lie down.

As you might recall Compiz Fusion has already cloned Vista’s Flip-3D and Mac OS X’s Expose features. The Flip-3D feature is called Shift (video demo), and the Expose clone is called Scale (video demo). Stackswitch has its benefits over both because all of the windows are visible at the same time, and it’s more compact.

There’s one thing that I’m dying to know though… is this something you would actually use, or is it merely one of those things that you show off to your friends? Personally the thing that I still find myself using the most for switching between applications is Alt+Tab (or Command+Tab on a Mac). Take a look at this video demonstration of the new Stackswitch, and let us know whether you would ever use something like this:

WordPress 2.0 Has Officially Been Released

This article was written on January 01, 2006 by CyberNet.

WordPress

If you have not heard, WordPress 2.0 has been released and is out of the beta version. My site is run off of this software and it is very well put together. The upgrade for me was seamless, all I had to do was transfer the files over (leaving my wp-config.php and wp-content folder unchanged as stated) and it just worked. Of course, there were some ‘hacks’ that I had done to it that I had to go back and put back in the files, but the upgrade was all done in less than an hour.

One of my main ‘hacks’ is the user registration process. I have created a method so that the user can make their own passwords so that an email address isn’t vital to the user creating an account. The coding for the registration process changed a little in the upgrade so I couldn’t just use my old wp-register.php file, instead I had to go back through it to implement it again.

I guess I can’t complain with all of the new features that I have acquired by performing the upgrade. I hope more of you perform the upgrade because the differences, especially in the admin section, can be seen very quickly. The AJAX features that it now has implemented are also a big benefit!

Eset To Release NOD32 2.7 Later Today

This article was written on November 17, 2006 by CyberNet.

NOD32 2.7 Beta

In a press release on Tuesday Eset announced that they will be releasing the Vista-compatible NOD32 antivirus later on today. It will be version 2.7 and will be “one of the few malware solutions on the market today that is fully compatible with x64 versions of Vista, Windows XP and Windows Server 2003.”

The press release also talks about a better anti-stealth monitor that will be included in this release:

The upgrade to ESET NOD32 also features enhanced anti-stealth technology that offers more comprehensive protection against rootkits through its ability to see the true state of running processes and the file system. Rootkits enable hackers to maintain control of a compromised system by hiding their presence.

Previously there was a Beta version of NOD32 2.7 posted for users to try out and hunt down bugs. The new version is only an intermittent release because the Eset Security Suite is expected to be out early next year. That suite will not only offer protection from trojans and malware but it also includes a spyware and firewall monitor for even more added security.

I used to have NOD32 as my antivirus scanner because it offers amazing protection and has virtually no footprint on your system. When I came across Avast!, however, I couldn’t help but switch because it was a no-cost solution that also offered great protection. The other great thing about Avast! is that you can run it on your system and completely forget about it: you’ll hardly be able to know that it is running and best of all you’ll never have to worry about your subscription expiring.

Puppy Linux 3.0 Weighs in Under 100MB

This article was written on October 05, 2007 by CyberNet.

Puppy Linux 3.0 Many of you have probably heard of Damn Small Linux before because of its extraordinarily small size for an operating system, but the new Puppy Linux 3.0 promises the same compactness. The Live CD for Puppy Linux is a whopping 98MB, which means that the entire operating system will likely fit inside the memory of a computer…even those that are ten years old. And because of the tiny size the boot time is often under 30-seconds.

Puppy Linux 3.0 was just released on Tuesday, and since then it has racked in over 5,000 downloads. Prior to that they have had upwards of 65,000 downloads on a single release, so I imagine this one will reach similar heights as time goes on.

Like most Linux distributions you can run it from a CD, but the more unique thing is its CD-RW compatibility. If you’re running Puppy Linux off of a CD-RW it can not only run the operating system and your programs, but it will also write your data back to it! That’s extremely sweet for people who don’t have computers with USB 2.0 support.

The most obvious question that you’re probably asking is what kind of software does this come with? I was wondering the same thing, and seeing that OpenOffice is bigger than the entire operating I didn’t expect that to be included. Here’s a short list of what it comes with:

  • AbiWord for creating documents
  • Composer WYSIWYG for website creation
  • XFinans for financial tasks
  • Gaim/Pidgin for chatting
  • SeaMonkey for web browsing
  • Gnumeric for spreadsheets
  • and more

If you decide to tryout Puppy Linux you should take a peek at the over two-dozen video demonstrations that they have put together.

Tactile 3D Gives Users A Different Experience

This article was written on December 17, 2005 by CyberNet.

Tactile 3D Desktop

Tactile 3D offers users a completely different interface from what is known as standard. You now have 3D space to organize your files and windows. Now, this isn’t its own operating system or anything, it will run right on top of Microsoft Windows. It gives you the ability to browse your files in more of a visual way, rather than digging around looking for file names. Tactile 3D will remember where you leave your items, so it will be like creating your own 3-Dimensional world. This is the whole point behind the application which is to give users more room to place their items, other than in the conventional 2D space on your desktop.

Looks like it would be more fun than it would be useful, because I believe current file explorers do exactly what they are supposed. I wouldn’t want to navigate around a 3D world in order to find the files I am looking for. Guess I can’t say anything until I give it a shot! Take it for a spin for 30-days.

Yahoo Acquires Inquisitor for Safari

This article was written on May 09, 2008 by CyberNet.

Yahoo has made an acquisition today that will probably catch some Mac users off guard. They bought the rights to a Safari add-on called Inquisitor, which is pictured to the right.

Once installed Inquisitor enhances the search box in Safari so that it will pull in live results as you type. The results are prioritized based upon the user’s search history, and it’s also able to auto-complete the results as you type them.

I tried out Inquisitor, and I can definitely attest to its awesomeness. It’s very sleek, and currently lets you pick between Yahoo or Google as the default search engine to be used for the live results. It’s pretty obvious that because Yahoo just acquired the application that it would be the default option, and it is.

After setting up Inquisitor you can change the default search engine to Google (if you want). This is done by opening Safari’s preferences, and then selecting the Search tab as seen below. Then hit the drop-down menu for a list of available search engines:

inquisitor options.png

After getting our Mac’s I tried using only Safari for a few hours, but there were some things that I just couldn’t grow accustomed to. This add-on makes me really want to start using Safari again, but maybe I’ll just keep my fingers crossed that some Firefox developer will create an extension that works (and looks) as good as this does.

In case you’re wondering the developer of the add-on will continue to be the one who works on it, but he’s not joining Yahoo as an employee.

Foxit Reader 3.0 Released

This article was written on November 24, 2008 by CyberNet.

foxit reader 3.jpg

arrow Windows Windows only arrow
Adobe has struggled with the performance of Acrobat Reader for quite some time, and that’s the main reason I’ve always found myself using the free Foxit Reader. Plus the fact that they’ve always offered the PDF reader as a standalone executable has meant that I can carry around the application on my USB drive. In the end, however, it all comes down to the fact that I can start Foxit in under 2 seconds.

The best part is that they keep making the software better and better. The latest release, Foxit Reader 3.0, includes Firefox support, an improved selection tool, a thumbnail panel, and more. You can find a full list of what’s new here, but these are the ones I wanted to highlight:

  • Enticing Multimedia Design
Now users can not only play multimedia in Foxit Reader, but also are empowered to add, edit or delete multimedia files with the incredible Movie Tool and Sound Tool.
  • Thumbnail Panel
Shows thumbnail images for each PDF page and allows users to quickly view relevant portions of a PDF file. Now users can navigate through PDFs with page thumbnails.
  • Layout Panel
Lists PDF layers in the document, allows users to control the display of some certain content areas.
  • Awe-Inspiring Foxit OnDemand Content Management
This new add-on enables users to organize, share and collaborate on documents and forms online. Users can upload from Foxit Reader or send documents with ease. Advanced features include workflow driven document sharing, revisions of documents, CollabRoom for group collaboration.
  • Firefox Support
With Firefox Plugin, users can view and work with PDF files loaded in Foxit Reader with Firefox web browser.
  • Improved Select Text Tool
Not only used for selecting text, but also enables users to add most types of annotations, including highlight, strikeout, underline, squiggly, replacement, etc.
  • Better Annotation Control
Allows users to align and center multiple annotations on PDF pages, including Notes, Drawing Markups and Typewriter Comments.
  • Advanced Toolbar Control
Completely rearranges the toolbar layout and allows users to easily customize the tools that appear in Foxit Reader.
  • Transferrable preferences Settings
Foxit Reader creates an INI file to save user’s preferences settings so that it can be easily kept and transferred. Users can keep their own settings and don’t have to configure them when Foxit Reader is updated or moved.

ArtRage 2 Gets Released For Tablet PC Users

Tablet PC users know of the ArtRage software because of how real-to-life it is. It seems like every stroke that you paint you are painting on a real canvas. Not to mention having every color and every brush imaginable to paint with! ArtRage 2.0 takes all of these features and pushes them even further.

ArtRage 2.0 comes in two editions, where one is a free version and one is the full/paid version. The full version only costs $19.95 which is very reasonable because of the new tools, layers, metal paints, and more! You won’t see much of a difference between ArtRage 1 and ArtRage 2 if you just use the free version.

Webroot Offers Free Firewall for Vista XP (Limited Time)

This article was written on October 26, 2007 by CyberNet.

Webroot Free Firewall 1

I received a tip the other day from “S” who was letting me know that Webroot is giving away free licenses for their firewall software. This is for a limited time only, and I’ve already requested several licenses of it for myself. ;) All you have to do is fill out a form with your name, email, and so on. Within seconds of completing the registration you’ll receive a download link and product key in your email. That’s right, this $20 software is completely free, and it comes from the same company who makes the respected Spy Sweeper software.

I’m sure you’re wondering what I think of the Webroot Firewall. As you probably know it is pretty slim picking right now when it comes to free Vista firewalls. Previously we’ve taken a look at PC Tools Firewall Plus, Zonealarm, and an early release of Comodo 3. Comodo has always been my firewall of choice, but the final version isn’t due out until sometime in November.

I got Webroot installed on my machine today (big screenshot gallery at the end of this article), and the registration key that I was sent worked perfectly. The first thing that I noticed after installing it is that the interface is extremely clean and well organized. I didn’t feel overwhelmed, and most importantly it didn’t bombard me with messages to approve Internet access for my running applications. Why’s that?

From what I gather the Webroot Firewall learns from how you use the computer. It “automatically develops a baseline profile of your normal PC usage based on system variables such as CPU utilization, thread count, and others.” When there is any unusual activity going on you’ll be the first to know.

One of the other things that I like are the three configurable profiles that leave you just one-click away from changing your security settings. Maybe you want different settings when you have your computer at work as compared to home? Webroot makes that possible. You can even set it up to block websites, which might be just the thing you need when you’re at work and trying to be productive. ;)

Because of the sheer simplicity of the program I would say that this is a great application to use. I didn’t have to configure a single thing after getting it installed, and I was never bothered with annoying popups. When Comodo makes its way out the door in final form I’ll be sure to compare all of the free Vista-compatible firewalls, but until then I say that Webroot is the best alternative. But you better get your license key today because the deal may not be going on much longer!

  • Stealth Mode Feature
  • Email Protection
  • Advanced Packet Filtering
  • Malicious Process Blocking

Vista SP1 Download Leaked for Weeks

This article was written on February 07, 2008 by CyberNet.

Vista SP1

When Microsoft announced that Vista SP1 had completed earlier this week I was a little bit excited. The disappointment came when I read that it wouldn’t be ready for public consumption until the middle of March due to issues select users have with drivers.

Microsoft didn’t give any information as to what the build number was of the final version, which hindered the spread of the Service Pack through back channels such as the BitTorrent network. There was some rumored build numbers, but a quick screenshot by Paul Thurrott who got Vista SP1 RTM confirms what the build number really is: 6001.18000! That’s the same build that was released weeks ago to a private group of testers, and was branded as Vista SP1 RC Refresh 2.

Various methods of acquiring this build have been all over the Internet for weeks, including a way to get it through Windows Update. Standalone installers are also blanketing the file sharing sites (*cough* Pirate Bay *cough*) over the last few days, and can be found by searching for Vista SP1 6001.18000. The English-only download weighs in at about 434MB.

Paul’s screenshot, as seen above, was taken from this Windows Registry location:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion

You can pull up that Registry location to see what version of Vista or Vista SP1 you’re currently running. Here are the important things that you’ll want to verify:

BuildGUID: 28f47544-6618-4bc4-a11e-ed7d7d66e144
BuildLab: 6001.longhorn_rtm.080118-1840
BuildLabEx: 6001.18000.x86fre.longhorn_rtm.080118-1840
CSDBuildNumber: 1616
CSDVersion: Service Pack 1
CurrentBuild: 6001

Anyone running illegal copies of Vista may want to think twice before installing SP1. Microsoft has patched the OEM BIOS crack, and after reading through some of the comments on the Torrent sites I see that a lot of people with the crack are being forced to activate their machine.

Now we’ll have to wait and see whether Microsoft decides to officially release Vista SP1 any sooner since it’s already available through other not-so-official methods.
