Free BurnAware is Available, Again

In March we covered two free CD/DVD/Blu-ray burning applications that pretty much amounted to everything you’d need. One of the programs, called BurnAware, was sold off a few months later to a company who scrapped the idea of offering a free version of the program. I had uploaded a mirror for the last free version, and over the last two months it’s been downloaded almost 1,500 times. That’s a good indication that peopled like the app, but not the price tag.

It’s not often that you see a program go from being free to paid, and then back to free, but that’s the path BurnAware has taken. The company offering the program still has a paid version available, but they have unveiled the no-cost BurnAware Free which supports all the basic operations most people need:

  • Create data and multisession CD/DVD/Blu-ray Discs
  • Create Audio CDs and jukebox CD/DVD/Blu-ray Discs
  • Create DVDs-Video
  • Create and burn disc images
  • Supports all current hardware interfaces (IDE/SCSI/USB/1394/SATA)
  • Supports UDF/ISO9660/Joliet Bridged file systems (any combination)
  • On-the-fly writing for all image types (no staging to hard drive first)
  • Auto-verification of written files
  • Supports CD-Text
  • Supports Windows NT/2000/XP/Vista (32 and 64 Bit), no drivers required

Go ahead and grab the free version before they change their minds, again! ;)

Skype Releases Three New Toolbars For Office, Outlook Express, Thunderbird

This article was written on July 29, 2006 by CyberNet.

Skype
Skype, the internet communication giant has released three new toolbars for Office, Outlook Express, and Thunderbird to help make calling easier and more convenient. They have also announced upgrades for two existing toolbars, one for Internet Explorer, and the other for Firefox.

The toolbars make calling a number in a Microsoft Office document, e-mail, or web page easy with just one click. The toolbars will recognize phone numbers within a page or document and allow users to initiate calls. Users can also send instant messages and transfer files. Skype gives this example of how it might be used: “In a business environment, Skype toolbars can be used to streamline the editing or approval process. If a user receives an email about a collaborative project, that user can see the online status of their colleagues and initiate a conference call or multichat with them instead of continuing the email thread.”

As for downloading the toolbar, it’s free. Internet Explorer and Firefox toolbars can be found here. Skype e-mail toolbars (for Outlook and Thunderbird) can be downloaded here, and Microsoft Office toolbars can be downloaded here. According to Skype, these toolbars are compatible with all versions of Microsoft Office, Firefox 1.5 and 2.0, and Internet Explorer including the 7.0 beta.

We last wrote about Skype when they released a video-compatible version for Mac users. Skype has been doing a lot to make sure their product is easier and more compatible for all to use. The new toolbars and the upgrades for Internet Explorer and Firefox are proof of this. It seems as though maybe the description ‘internet communication giant’ may one day be an understatement.

Google Releases A Whole Package Of Software

Of course Google can’t stand back and watch Microsoft take the cake for all the publicity on the recent beta of Office 12 and Vista, so Google came out with a whole package of software! The package includes some of Google’s very own software like Google Talk and Google Earth, but also includes software from other sources. Some of this software is Norton Antivirus (with a six-month subscription) and Ad-Aware. For the full list of 9 programs that come with the package, visit the Google Pack Home Page.

Flip4Mac Quicktime Plugin Released By Microsoft

Looks like Microsoft keeps on catering to Mac. First they ‘promised’ to develop Microsoft Office for another 5 years and then they released this plugin for Quicktime (called Flip4Mac) that gives users the ability to open Windows Media files. What’s next? Maybe they will make a plugin for OS X that will allow users to open all Windows files and applications. Well, maybe not that far.

Widgets on the Wii with Opera

This article was written on October 10, 2007 by CyberNet.

Opera Wii

Nintendo and Opera just launched a new version of Internet Channel for the Wii. It is a free upgrade for all existing users, which is especially nice if you managed to get it for free before June 30. Unfortunately I didn’t buy my Wii until after that deadline, and have yet to plop down 500 Wii points (equivalent to $5) for it.

The new version has several improvements and features that are sure to get applauded by Wii users, including USB keyboard support and widget integration!

  • USB Keyboard support
Hardware support for any USB keyboard makes typing both easier and faster. You just simply plug any standard USB keyboard into one of the two USB ports on your Nintendo Wii and you are ready to write email, compose blog posts, comment in forums and much more.
  • “Send to a Friend”
This feature enables you to send links to your favorite Web sites – or the one you are currently browsing – to your Wii friends whom you have added in your Wii. You can also add a message to send along with the link. When your Wii friend opens the message, they can immediately visit the page.
  • Copy & Paste
Users can now copy information from a Web page and paste it directly into the search field. Users may also store nine more favorites, bringing the total to 56.
  • Widget Support
Widgets available now include calendars, news readers, Internet radios and other fun applications. For more information on creating widgets, please visit widgets.opera.com with your Wii.

This sounds like a pretty big upgrade for the Wii web browser, and the USB keyboard support will make it a lot more useful. Kudos to Nintendo for making it work with any keyboard and not forcing you go out and buy some specially made gadget to do the typing!

Download Microsoft Carioca Rummy and Matching Game

This article was written on July 22, 2006 by CyberNet.

Download Microsoft Carioca Rummy and Matching Game
Microsoft constantly offers new software and benefits for people who have a legitimate copy of Windows and can pass the Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) check. Some of the newest additions to the catalog of software are Microsoft Carioca Rummy and Microsoft Match-Up.

Microsoft Carioca Rummy description:

If you enjoy card games, you will love Microsoft’s Carioca Rummy! The object of this unique card game, popular in countries like Argentina and Chile, is to get rid of all of your cards during each round. The player with the fewest cards at the end of the game wins!

Microsoft Match-Up description:

If you liked Solitaire, you’ll love Microsoft Match-Up! Match-Up! is a fun new game for Windows XP that tests your memory and matching skills. Flip the cards and match the images while racing against the clock.

I don’t know if I will ever understand how people that like Solitaire will necessarily love Microsoft Match-Up. They are only similar because they are card games but I don’t know of any reason why Microsoft would provide that kind of relationship. At least Microsoft is offering some benefits for running a genuine version of Windows (or for those people finding a WGA workaround :D ).

Opera 9.22 Available with Improved BitTorrent Support

This article was written on July 18, 2007 by CyberNet.

Opera Torrent

The Opera team has been working intensely on version 9.5, and we’ll hopefully be seeing weekly builds of those coming shortly. In the meantime they have whipped up Opera 9.22 which has significant improvements to the BitTorrent downloader.

I wasn’t expecting the results to be all that great because in the past the built-in BitTorrent was kind of slow (at least compared to a standalone program). I’ve been pleasantly surprised though, and having used the "improved" build for about a week I’ve noticed download speeds comparable to what I get with uTorrent. For example, when downloading the Ubuntu operating system I was able to max out my Internet connection. Previously Opera had a tough time using more than half of what my connection had to offer.

Aside from that the new version also adds support for the Microsoft Silverlight plug-in. Microsoft had said that Opera support for Silverlight would be coming soon, and they surprisingly didn’t lie. :)

I’m still anxiously waiting to see what the Opera team is throwing into version 9.5 though. We know that it will do a great job with CSS3, and then there is some sort of feature that they’ve "censored" from a screenshot. Argh…the pain of having to wait can be enough to kill ya!

Get Microsoft Windows Vista Without The Bugs!

This article was written on December 06, 2005 by CyberNet.

If you would like to see what the Windows Vista is going to look like, then you can get the new version 5 of Stardock WindowBlinds which will use your Windows XP theming capabilities to resemble the new Vista look. It even updates it to look like the newest Beta 2 of Vista. In order to get the transparency you may want to have a decent graphics card as stated by the manufacturer. This does not hinder me from using it on my Averatec C3500 Tablet PC which only has 32MB of shared video memory. It runs without any hitches so I would definitely recommend that you give it a go. I cannot even tell that it is using any of my resources.

WindowBlinds 5 runs on 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows XP. Stardock plans to re-brand WindowBlinds 4.6 as “WindowBlinds Classic” for users of Windows 2000 and 9x. A shareware download is available to try, and the application can be purchased for $19.95 USD.

Movable Type 4 Launches

This article was written on August 15, 2007 by CyberNet.

Movable TypeEarlier today Six Apart launched the 4th edition of their popular blogging software called Movable Type. Many of the bloggers I know are using WordPress, but there are several big ones such as Boing Boing, Read/Write Web, and Treehugger that all use Movable Type.

It currently isn’t open source like WordPress is, but an open source version is in the works for later this year. If you’re just using it for a personal blog then you are free to download it, but commercial blogs will have to fork out some money if they want to use this.

There’s quite a few things that are new in Movable Type 4, but here’s a shorter list of the more notable things:

  • Administer multiple blogs, and create pages that aggregate posts from all or some of the blogs.
  • Create standalone pages for powerful content management
  • Built-In Asset and File Management
  • Simpler Installation
  • Easy-to-use, extensible interface
  • Templates are more customizable
  • Customizable Roles
  • Use RSS feeds to manage comments and feedback, approve draft entries for publishing, keep track of site registrations — anything you can imagine.

A demo site has been setup for people to play around with Movable Type 4. Here is the information needed if you want to try that out:

*Sigh* FastStone Capture Turns to Shareware…now $30

This article was written on May 14, 2007 by CyberNet.

FastStone Capture

I’m sure many of you are going to be just as disappointed to hear that the FastStone Capture software is now shareware. Previously I have raved about how great this software is for taking screenshots, but a lot of that excitement was because it was available at no cost. Now you’ll have to fork over $29.95 if you want to get your hands on any of the future versions (lifetime upgrades are included).

They still offer the portable version, but even that requires registration after your 30–day trial is over:

Faststone Trial

The switch to shareware comes right after they released version 5.4 today with a few new features, including improved support for Windows Vista. Here is a full list of what’s new:

  • Added Fade Edge effect. Now edge effects can be applied to 4 edges instead of only 2 in previous versions.
  • Supports external editors (“Edit With” list in the FastStone Editor), which allows you to edit the captured screenshot with specified external editors. This feature enables you to add virtually unlimited editing capabilities to the program
  • Added option “Open in External Program” to “Auto Save” section in the Settings, which allows you to open the captured image in a specified program automatically
  • Enhanced the Screen Magnifer
  • Solved some compatibility issues in Windows Vista

There’s nothing revolutionary in this release that would cause me to pay for the upgrade. So if you’re thinking about upgrading I would personally hold off, and even still I think I’m more likely to buy SnagIt given that it has more features for almost the same cost. This is a really disappointing loss for the freeware community. :(

I did manage to jump over to Download.com and grab FastStone Capture 5.3, which was the last free version to be offered. Luckily I caught this before most download sites updated their files. You can download the FREE FastStone Capture 5.3 from my mirror.
