Windows Live Messenger Patches Start Appearing

Windows Live Messenger was just released and millions and millions of users are awaiting the release of Messenger Plus! Live by Patchou but there are some patches already out there that will tide you over until he releases it to the public. Two of the most popular patches that you will find are A-Patch and the Mess.be Patch.

A-Patch has 70 features that it can tweak in the Windows Live Messenger that was just released yesterday. Some of the most popular features it has is removing the advertisement banner, remove buttons that you never use, and it can allow you to run multiple instances of Windows Live Messenger.

The Mess.be Patch also has similar features to A-Patch. It can remove the advertisement as well but one unique feature is that it can make the dashboard translucent (pictured in the screenshot above). You can also load and save all of your settings so that you can configure other computers with the same settings in just a few clicks.

I think that these patches are going to be really popular and downloaded countless times but true craziness will develop when Messenger Plus! Live is released.

Adobe Reader 8 Released…Now I Can Die Happy!

This article was written on December 05, 2006 by CyberNet.

That’s sarcasm in the title before you get too excited and think that Adobe did something revolutionary with the new Reader. I have spent a lot of time preparing a great article for tomorrow morning so my brain is starting to wither away to nothing (just to warn you before reading this article) 😉

Anyhow, back on topic. The new version 8 is sure to please any Adobe Reader enthusiast out there (are there any of those people?). Here are some of the things that you can do with this version:

  • Maximized work area – View PDFs in a new visual design for the work area, navigation pane, and toolbars. User interface elements have been removed to maximize space.
  • Customizable toolbars – Easily hide or show individual tools by right-clicking/Control-clicking a toolbar, or use the More Tools dialog box to customize all your toolbars.
  • Shared reviews – Participate in a shared review. Comments are stored on a central server, allowing all participants to see comments in real time.
  • Commenting and markup enhancements – View and accurately place callout and cloud markups as you apply them. The callout leader automatically moves as you position the callout. Selected comments are highlighted for easier visibility when zoomed out. Rotate stamps, and select all tools from a single, integrated toolbar.
  • Booklet printing – Print pages as a simple booklet, for example, 2-up, saddle-stitched.
  • 2D Measurement tool enhancements – Measurement recalculated if start or end point moved. Measurements snap to lines, intersections, or corners.

That’s about everything from their What’s New page that seems halfway noteworthy. Honestly, they still have a long ways to go to match what Foxit Reader offers. I’m not sure why they keep throwing more and more features into Adobe Reader when all it does is make it slower. If they are going to implement things that most people will never use, and never understand, then they should at least provide options to disable those features. The only thing that Adobe Reader does right is make it possible to open PDF’s from within a browser. Heck, I don’t even like that feature though because it seems like my browser crashes most of the time when using it. Oh well…there is always version 9 right? ;)

Window Clippings – Free Screenshot Software

This article was written on July 26, 2007 by CyberNet.

Window ClippingsIt was a big disappointment when the FastStone screenshot application turned to shareware, but there is another free alternative available that has some really nice features (especially for Vista users). It’s called Window Clippings and it is available for Windows XP, Server 2003, and Vista. Using it is a piece of cake since there is only one executable file (weighing it at only 237KB) that doesn’t require any installation.

There are some benefits that you’ll get by registering the software for $10, but overall most people will be more than satisfied with the free version. The best thing about it is that it’s intuitive, and yet offers several options for customizing the application. Here is a list of my favorite features in Window Clippings:

  • As seen in the screenshot to the right, you can include one window in the screenshot or multiple windows. This is done by holding down the control key after Window Clippings has been activated.
  • One of the coolest things is that Window Clippings has full support for capturing and retaining Vista’s transparency and shadow effects.
  • You can have the resulting screenshot automatically saved to a file or copied to the clipboard. Heck, you can have it do both with every screenshot if you really want to. :)

The only thing I wish you could do with the free version is select a certain region of the screen to capture. Having that would reap the full benefits of the application, but I’m sure that the developer will continue to receive support through registrations and will keep adding new features. I’m pretty sure that this can become an amazing screenshot application with a little more work, and I look forward to seeing some new stuff!

Camino 1.5 Released for Mac Users

This article was written on June 05, 2007 by CyberNet.

Camino Web Browser 1.5

Camino 1.5, a Web browser for the Mac OS, was just released offering a slew of new features that will undoubtedly appeal to a lot of people. At the core of the browser lies the same rendering engine that Firefox 2 uses, which is good news because as the Firefox browser continues to gain in popularity the number of Firefox-compatible websites keeps increasing.

Here are some of the other things Camino 1.5 brings to the table:

  • In-line spell checking! This is Firefox 2’s most notable feature, but Camino does it a little differently. While it does check text fields for misspellings as you type, it actually uses the Mac OS X dictionary instead of providing an additional dictionary like Firefox does.
  • Session restore – just like Firefox, Camino will now offer to restore your tabs after a crash. It can also be set to automatically restore your tabs after you restart the browser.
  • Keychain compatibility – use the same Keychain entries for both Safari and Camino
  • Feed notifications – Camino recognizes when there is a feed available for a site, and if you want it will use the Mac OS X default feed reader to subscribe to it.
  • Single window mode – prevents sites from opening another window.
  • Improved pop-up blocker – blocks pop-ups and also has Flash blocking capabilities (with the option to whitelist a site).
  • Gecko rendering engine 1.8.1
  • Resizable search field
  • and more…

As I was reading around there were quite a few users reporting constant crashes with the newest version, but it seems to be attributed to the use of CamiScript and CamiTools. I’m guessing that’s because the tools are not supported add-ons for Camino 1.5, and have not been updated to work with the newest version of the browser. Actually, CamiTools isn’t even being developed anymore so they removed the download from their site.

CyberWare: Retrieve Your Product Key For Windows XP & Vista

This article was written on August 06, 2006 by CyberNet.

CyberNet's CyberWare
Tracking Down Great Software For You!

One of the biggest pains about software you pay for is keeping track of your product key. Microsoft Windows and Office users will not have to worry any longer because the Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder is to the rescue! It can retrieve your product key for Windows 95, 98, ME, NT4, 2000, XP, Server 2003, Windows Vista, Office 97, Office XP, and Office 2003. The Vista compatibility was just added yesterday…so they definitely keep this software up-to-date.

Retrieve Your Product Key For Windows XP & Vista

This isn’t a crack for Windows or Office because it will only retrieve the product key that you have already entered in and will not go probing your computer for a valid product key. So if you are going to use this it better be before you reformat your machine because if you are already halfway through the Windows setup then you are out of luck!

Look2Skype Brings Outlook And Skype Together For Easier Calling

Look2Skype is a very intelligent invention that will allow users to select a contact in Microsoft Outlook and call them using Skype. This kinda reminds me of Windows Mobile Devices that allow you to do the same thing but instead of using Skype, they use a real phone service. It is a pretty clever idea so make sure you check it out!

Watch Items on Amazon for In-Stock or Price Drops

This article was written on August 05, 2008 by CyberNet.

amazon watcher.jpg

arrow Windows Windows; Mac Mac arrow
A nifty little program called Amazon Watcher can save you from those “if only I was a little faster” moments. What it can do is watch any item on Amazon, and then notify you when the price has dropped or when an item becomes available. When one of those things happen the application can bring up the Amazon page in your browser, send you an email, or automatically order a specified quantity given that you’re willing to provide it with your Amazon credentials.

There are a variety of situations where this can be helpful:

  • Trying to find something that no one seems to have in stock, such as a Wii console.
  • Waiting for a price drop, such as on the Xbox 360.
  • Keeping an eye out for price drops after you’ve bought an item. Remember, if the price drops in 30-days you can get a refund of the difference.

One thing that would probably be cool for Amazon Watcher to include would be a way to view/graph the price history for however long you decide to watch an item. That way you’d be able to see when the price has changed, and by how much. Trends like this can help determine when the right time to buy is.

After using it for just a few minutes I have to say that it’s rather impressive. It supports all 6 Amazon international stores, and runs on both Windows and Mac machines.

New PortableApps.com Suite With Firefox 2

This article was written on November 20, 2006 by CyberNet.

PortableApps Launcher PortableApps.com just launched an awesome new suite. It has all of your favorite applications like Firefox, Thunderbird, and OpenOffice in one convenient download that can be stored right on your flash drive. Not only does it include all of the best programs but it also has the cool new launcher that is pictured to the right.

Here is everything that is included with the suite:

That is a long list of updated releases. There are a two different versions of the suite available: the standard edition will run fine from a 512MB drive while the Lite edition has no problems on a 256MB drive. One thing that I always seem to experience when using some of the larger applications, like OpenOffice, are slow startup times. It is mostly because my USB drive isn’t very fast so I typically just use the smaller programs. Firefox Portable is the primary one that I carry with me because it is nice being able to take my Firefox profile wherever I go.

My First WordPress Plug-In: Digg Button

This article was written on August 25, 2006 by CyberNet.

If you noticed that my posting was a little light yesterday that was because I finally sat down to create my first WordPress plug-in. It isn’t anything extravagant but it saves me some time and a lot of headache.

Digg Button WordPress Plug-In I cleverly named the plug-in Digg Button because that is exactly what it is. It makes it easy to insert the Digg API code into your WordPress post wherever you would like. You can then style the button using CSS if you choose to.

The plug-in that I made is not like the “Digg This” one which is great for some people. That plug-in automatically recognizes when someone has submitted your story and will display the button on your site. That didn’t work good for me because I didn’t want the button displayed on every post that gets submitted. In my opinion that would add too much clutter to the site.

There was also a WordPress “hack” available to make the Digg API work but it wasn’t compatible for every browser. The Digg button would display fine in Firefox but would show nothing in Internet Explorer. Up until this point if you have never seen the Digg button on this site then you are probably an Internet Explorer user. :D

If you want more details on how the plug-in works go ahead and checkout the homepage I have started for it.
