ReadAir: Google Reader Desktop App

One thing that has always amazed me is the fact that none of the desktop feed readers currently available synchronize with Google Reader. Maybe I’m wrong and I just haven’t searched hard enough, but we’re getting a little closer with ReadAir. It’s a free (and open source) download that leverages off of the relatively new Adobe Air to bring your Google Reader feeds to your desktop.

At first glance it will probably remind you of Newgator’s free NetNewsWire app for Mac’s, and I’m guessing that there was definitely some inspiration taken from it. Don’t be fooled by the appearance… this is a both a Mac and Windows application since it runs on Adobe Air (doesn’t appear to work in Adobe Air for Linux). Albeit it does look a little weird on Windows since the skin is still the same, but it’s not any weirder than iTunes on Windows.

There are some pitfalls though. You can star, share, and search items in your feeds, but there are no offline capabilities. For some people the whole point of using a desktop feed reader is so that they can easily read the news when their not connected to the Internet, but you can’t do that with ReadAir. Plus there are no keyboard shortcuts, and no more than 20 items can be viewed in a single feed. Yeah, those are some deal breakers for me.

I think I’ll be sticking with NetNewsWire until something better comes along, but I do like Google’s online feed reader better than Newsgator’s. So hopefully a better Google Reader synchronization option will come about so that I can use a desktop client on my computer, and use Google’s new iPhone interface when I’m on the go.

Launchy 1.0 Released: Hunt Down Files, Search Bookmarks, and More!

This article was written on January 31, 2007 by CyberNet.

I’ve had several people email me in the past week telling me what a great application Launchy is, and I realized that which is why I wrote about it back in September of 2006. At first I just thought that it was some new people stumbling upon the application, but then Radu pointed out that this is the final 1.0 release which just happened on January 23.

Launchy is a nifty little application that will let you launch applications simply by starting to type the name of the program in the window. With Launchy 1.0, however, you can do even more!

Launchy

So what’s new? I pulled up the forum and it looks like Launchy supports plug-ins to make your experience even better!

  • Launchy now supports plugins! Check out the “Plugins” folder inside your Launchy directory, you can add and remove plugins from there when Launchy is not running. Following are the plugins that come with Launchy by default, I expect many others to be developed by myself and the community.
    • Weby Plugin

Perform Web Searches: Launchy now supports the following search keywords: google, msn, yahoo, live, weather, amazon, wikipedia, dictionary, thesaurus, imdb, netflix, and msdn websearch. Type in any of these keywords, hit tab, type in your search query, and hit enter!

Add custom web searches: Please see Quicksearches in the Foxy plugin

Launch Webpages: Type in the url such as ‘www.launchy.net’ or ‘http://www.launchy.net’ and hit enter

    • Foxy Plugin

Bookmarks: The Foxy plugin will automatically load your FireFox bookmarks into the database. Just search for them as you would applications.

Quick searches: Launchy loads Firefox quick searches and will index the keyword into the database. Use it like you would a web search.

    • Explory Plugin

Browse: Type in c: and then hit tab, now type in a couple letters of the next directory, and hit tab. You can press enter at anytime to launch the currently selected file or folder. Notice, you must tab after each file/folder.

Browse from shortcut: If you type in “my docu”, hit tab, and then type in “my musi” and hit tab, Launchy will switch into browsing mode. Any directory or shortcut to a directory can convert into browsing mode.

    • Calcy Plugin

Calculate: Type in some math.. Launchy will figure out what you want to do. Warning: This calculator is limited to +,/,-,* and parenthesis.

  • Now Ctrl+Backspace deletes a word at a time and Alt+Backspace clears the text
  • Too many bug fixes to count or remember!

As this program keeps getting new features it continues to become more and more useful. It is skinnable so you can make it look however you like, and I have to admit that it has a lot of eye appeal to it.

Now that Vista has both indexed searching and a sidebar with gadgets built-in I think some of these other companies, like Google, will be looking to extend their applications feature set to help increase its appeal. If they start adding features similar to what Launchy offers then I think more people will consider downloading their desktop search application. I really don’t know what else these search application can add because they definitely won’t be able to compete with Vista’s integrated search feature!

Download Mozilla Firefox 2.0.0.1 And 1.5.0.9 As Well As Thunderbird 1.5.0.9

This article was written on December 19, 2006 by CyberNet.

Today is a very big day for Mozilla! We have Firefox 1.5.0.9 and 2.0.0.1 available for download as well as Thunderbird 1.5.0.9. As I mentioned yesterday there are 183 bugs fixed in Firefox 2.0.0.1: 42 are crashers, 3 are memory leaks, 41 are regressions and 4 are privacy-related bugs. In the comments yesterday Tom asked if this was a lot of bug fixes or if it was typical for a minor update. Since it is the first release after a major update I was expecting there to be a lot of bug fixes so this isn’t surprising to me, but 1.5.0.8 only had 9 bug fixes from the previous 1.5.0.7 so this update for 2.0.0.1 has quite a few changes. Since there are so many changes don’t be surprised if some of your extensions have problems.

James pointed out in the comments this morning that Mozilla plans to make the changes live on the website at 10AM and the built-in updates will be activated around 5PM (both times are Pacific Time). Below you will find the downloads for each of the applications and they use a load balancing URL to access their FTP. Most sites that are already linking to the builds use an address that looks something like “ftp.mozilla.com…” but this one is “releases.mozilla.com…”  which is supposed to spread the load out across the mirrors (or so I’ve been told).

Alright, here are the download links and if you have any problems with extensions please let us know so that others can be a little more cautious while installing the new releases:

–Firefox 1.5.0.9 Download–

–Firefox 2.0.0.1 Download–

–Thunderbird 1.5.0.9 Download–

With all of that being said, work on Firefox 1.5.0.10 and 2.0.0.2 has already begun and they are looking for an end of January or early February release. Congratulations to the whole Mozilla team for another set of fine releases and keep up the good work!

Foxit Reader 2.2 – Now the Best PDF Reader

This article was written on October 01, 2007 by CyberNet.

Foxit Reader 2.2 Screenshot

Foxit Reader just got perfect in my opinion. You may think that I’m crazy for thinking that it wasn’t perfect before, but one thing that always bothered me was the poor text selection. Before to copy and paste text from a PDF you had to draw a box around the text that you wanted. It was nothing like what Acrobat does for selecting text, and it was far from what people are accustomed to when selecting text in a word processor.

Now, however, that has all changed. Foxit Reader 2.2 has a greatly improved text selection feature. With it you can highlight text line-by-line which is incredibly handy when working with multi-column layouts. If the text that you’re highlighting gets close to the bottom of the page Foxit will automatically begin scrolling for you, too!

The other good news is that the improved text selection is just one of the many new features in Foxit Reader 2.2:

  • Capture words via mouse: If you are using a dictionary software, you may want to use your mouse to capture words inside a PDF file and have them translated. You can turn on this feature by checking “Screen word-capturing” option under Edit>Preferences>General.
  • Advanced PDF Search: Now you can search a string either in a single PDF file or in multiple PDF files under a specified folder. When the search finishes, all occurrences will be listed in a tree view.
  • Minimize Foxit Reader to the system tray: You now can save space on your task bar by minimizing the Foxit Reader to system tray. This feature can be turned on by checking “Minimize to system tray” option under Edit>Preferences>General.
  • Work with friendly bookmarks: Now when you navigate through the PDF document, the highlighted bookmark item will automatically be kept in sync with the current page being displayed. And you can click on a handle to hide or show the bookmark panel.
  • View PDF page size: Now the actual size of each PDF page is displayed on the status bar.
  • Enjoy other improved features: You will enjoy many other improved features, including:
    • Well-organized toolbars
    • Better command line support
    • Enhanced support for eastern Asian languages
    • Many bug fixes

Vista SP1 Download Available

This article was written on March 18, 2008 by CyberNet.

Microsoft has done it! After a month and a half of being completed Vista SP1 has been posted to the servers for anyone and everyone to download. There are all kinds of performance improvements included in this Service Pack that will make the operating system more appealing to users who have been holding out on an upgrade. Although I’m skeptical as to whether this, and only this, would sway someone to jump on the Vista bandwagon.

Shortly after Vista SP1 had been completed we decided to give it a whirl and see if Microsoft had actually prevented the use of the cracks that they said they did. We installed a copy of Vista with SP1, and one OEM BIOS crack did not work. It only took us a few minutes to find another crack that did work though, and I’m sure Microsoft is walking around with their heads down since they didn’t patch more of the cracks in time for SP1. I don’t expect them to patch every crack, but something is wrong if it only took me a few minutes to find another working crack. Since then they’ve pushed out an update that correctly checks whether the cracks are installed and notifies the user, but does nothing else.

So it looks like piraters and genuine users alike will be enjoying the benefits that Vista Service Pack 1 has to offer. The download will be available via Windows Update at some point (I don’t see it yet), but you can download the standalone packages if you don’t want to wait. These are, however, quite large in size and may take awhile for the download to complete:

Microsoft has quite an extensive list of improvements in Vista SP1, and instead of listing them all I pulled out the ones that I find to be the most significant:

  • An improved SRT (Startup Repair Tool), which is part of the Windows Recovery environment (WinRE), can now fix PCs unbootable due to certain missing OS files.
  • Improves the performance of browsing network file shares by consuming less bandwidth.
  • Improves power consumption and battery life by addressing an issue that causes a hard disk to continue spinning when it should spin down, in certain circumstances.
  • Improves the speed of adding and extracting files to and from a compressed (zipped) folder.
  • Improves performance over Windows Vista’s current performance across the following scenarios:
    • 25% faster when copying files locally on the same disk on the same machine
    • 45% faster when copying files from a remote non-Windows Vista system to a SP1 system
    • 50% faster when copying files from a remote SP1 system to a local SP1 system
  • Improves the copy progress estimation when copying files within Windows Explorer to about two seconds.
  • Includes improvements to Windows Superfetch that help to further improve resume times, in many environments.
  • Windows Vista SP1 includes a new compression algorithm for the RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol) that helps reduce network bandwidth required to send bitmaps or images via RDP. The compression, which can be selected by administrators via Group Policy settings, is transparent to all RDP traffic, and typically reduces the size of the RDP stream by as much as 25-60%, based on preliminary test results.
  • Enables support for hotpatching, a reboot-reduction servicing technology designed to maximize uptime. It works by allowing Windows components to be updated (or “patched”) while they are still in use by a running process. Hotpatch-enabled update packages are installed via the same methods as traditional update packages, and will not trigger a system reboot.
  • SP1 includes a number of changes which allow computer manufacturers and consumers to select a default desktop search program similar to the way they currently select defaults for third-party web browsers and media players. That means that in addition to the numerous ways a user could access a third party search solution in Windows Vista, they can now get to their preferred search results from additional entry points in the Start Menu and Explorer Windows in Windows Vista with SP1. 3rd party software vendors simply need to register their search application using the newly provided protocol in Windows Vista SP1 to enable these options for their customers.
  • With SP1, Windows Vista will report the amount of system memory installed rather than report the amount of system memory available to the OS. Therefore 32-bit systems equipped with 4GB of RAM will report all 4GB in many places throughout the OS, such as the System Control Panel. However, this behavior is dependent on having a compatible BIOS, so not all users may notice this change.

Fast Email Filtering in Thunderbird

This article was written on March 29, 2008 by CyberNet.

One of the great things about the Mozilla Thunderbird mail client is that it has an extension system much like it’s browser counterpart Firefox. Because of this Thunderbird users can really benefit from features created by developers around the world, and a great example of this is with the Seek extension.

Seek actually capitalizes on an idea that has been around for ages, but it’s typically found only on websites. A prime example would be eBay where you can filter results according to the product type, and then by manufacturer, and so on. With Seek you’re able to filter through your emails using a faceted browsing system, which is essentially performing searches using multiple criteria. For example, you can have Thunderbird show only the emails from a specific person that were sent in the last week directly to you.

A screenshot doesn’t really capture just how great this feature is, and so here’s a quick screencast put together by the developers:

Seek is a great idea, but I’ve moved my email management over to Gmail so that they are easily accessible from anywhere. The good news is that Gmail has a similar system setup except that it is classified as an “advanced search” (located next to the search box). It doesn’t have an interface quite as sharp as Seek’s, but it serves a similar purpose for those of you not wanting to use a desktop email client. With it you can filter your emails based on multiple criteria including when the emails were sent.

Skype 2.0.0.90 Released For Download Today

Just three weeks after their previous release, Skype has put out another release with only one notable change and one notable fix. The change is that they “added a SkypeOut promotion button” and the fix was “relayed Skype-2-Skype call quality improvements”. The call quality improvements were a definite necessity with the increasing popularity of Google Talk and the clear voice communications with other Google Talk users.

I am surprised this update didn’t come earlier than three weeks because their previous update schedules were on one to two week intervals. It is nice to see that they are still persistent with frequent updates even after being released for a two and a half years.

CyberWare: JAlbum 7.0 Just Released!

This article was written on January 31, 2007 by CyberNet.

CyberNet's CyberWare
Tracking Down Great Software For You!

JAlbum is an application that I have been using for a long long time as an easy way to share personal photos on our website so that our family and friends can easily access them. I’ve been stuck using version 6 for a long time, and even though the interface was nothing to gawk at ,it got the job done, which was what mattered the most. Now however, JAlbum 7.0 brings a whole new look and some new features…

JAlbum 7

Besides for the fresh new look, here is a list of new features:

  • User interface completely redesigned. The new user interface is intended to be easier to use and more extendable, but not less powerful. Parts of the old tab-based user interface is now hidden under settings windows with only the most frequently used options (skin and style selection) on the main window.
  • Now co-developed on Mac and Windows to ensure that JAlbum should look good and work perfect on both systems
  • Completely redesigned publish section. The new publish section is also intended to be easier to use, but also more powerful. One can now visually browse a remote server using a directory tree control and manage directories like in any full featured FTP client (add, rename and delete directories).
  • JAlbum now allows you to build virtual album structures. You can pick images and folders from anywhere on your harddisk to your album. Just drag and drop them onto JAlbum!
  • Improved publishing robustness. JAlbum will now reconnect and reattempt several times if a file fails to be published before giving up
  • High quality image scaling now considerably faster
  • Minor improvements to file sharing user interface
  • JAlbum now supports variable image sharpening natively (not just via filter plugin)
  • Several languages updated. Thank you all translators!
  • Bundled Chameleon skin updated to v4. More powerful and 3 times as fast!
  • Bundled the popular Flash based BananAlbum skin (v5.0)
  • Bundled BluPlusPlus skin updated to v3.12
  • Compiled for Windows with updated Excelsior Jet 4.8 compiler
  • Packaged for Mac as a standard dmg distribution

If you haven’t used JAlbum before then you will be amazed at how easy it is. All you have to do is pick a skin that you like, and this is probably the best place to find them. After you download the skin (or use one of the included ones) you just select the folder where your images reside and it will generate another folder complete with scaled thumbnails for your image viewing pleasure.

One of the changes listed above in JAlbum 7 is the inclusion of BananAlbum skin 5 which is completely Flash based. It is the only skin that I have seen that’s Flash based and you can view a live demo here if you want to see how it works. The other skins that I have worked with normally generate static HTML pages and don’t need PHP or MySQL running on your server. Of course if you upload large galleries that also means there will be a lot of HTML files (typically one for every full-size image).

One thing that you should try to remember when looking through the skins is to focus on finding a layout that you like. Most skins will include a number of different color schemes that you can choose from or some you can even customize yourself. If a theme is really well developed, like the BananAlbum one (it’s Flash based), it will have all sorts of features included as well:

It has a lot of features; choose your own colors, select a typeface, place the thumbnails at the top, bottom, left or at the right, support for movies, browse through your images using the cursor keys, image preloading, background image (full screen or tiled), auto hide the thumbnails wherever they are, advanced positioning possibilities of all elements, improved slideshow functionality, improved download functionality (php), crop the thumbnails, possibility to create your own typefaces, etc. BananAlbum also features a high-tech hierarchical menu (the BananaTree) and auto scale functionality, which creates high quality images.

As for other themes you should checkout, I would like to point out this Windows XP theme (demo)I like just because it is simple and nearly anyone who has used a computer will be able to understand it. The one that I currently use is PhotoDawg (demo) with some personal customizations that I have done to it. It hasn’t been updated in quite awhile though so I think I’ll be switching to the cool BananAlbum Flash theme soon.

XP Theme

Of course when creating a website, one of the big things you have to think about is whether it will work in everyone’s browsers. On the JAlbum’s skin site every skin will have a list of known browsers that it works with and in the case of BananAlbum it is compatible with every browser that’s available on every operating system, so that is probably one of the wisest choices (I’m sure you’re quickly seeing why it is one of the most popular skins).

That pretty much sums it up for JAlbum and anyone who is looking to share a photo album with family or friends will more than likely find this to be the best tool to do it.

Download JAlbum 7.0 (note that you can skip the registration page by clicking the appropriate button at the bottom of the download page)
