EA President: Nintendo Wii is Outdated

Red Nintendo WiiThe head of mega game manufacture EA had some choice words about the Nintendo Wii. Frank Gibeau believes that the console is outdated, and it’s time for a new strategy for the company. Here’s what he had to say,

When you look at Nintendo, for a while there, it was all about the Wii being the biggest entertainment platform ever and capturing the mass market, and it faded away. Now, they are coming back with a second act. I think they know that. They are very self-aware as an organization. Nintendo understand[s] the dynamics and the fact that HD consoles is a booming part of business right now. Legacy platforms like PS2 and the Wii have dropped off significantly. They are going to figure something out. They are going to come back at it

Wii sales have dropped off in the past year, but Nintendo has not confirmed any new plans for Wii 2. Microsoft and,Sony has made major gains on Nintendo as of late, which doesn’t bode well for the Wii.

Nintendo Launches First US 3DS Commercial

3DS.jpg

Until the 3DS launches on March 27th, most of us have no idea what the 3D graphics will actually be like. To help assure consumers that it’s well worth their time–and money–Nintendo launched its first North American 3DS commercial, showing off a representation of the 3D gaming experience.

Thus far, 3D, other than in the theater, has had on a rather rocky road. People haven’t exactly been falling all over themselves to buy 3DTVs, especially with all of the price and compatibility issues for glasses. But Nintendo is emphasizing that the 3DS will feature “3D games, photos, entertainment, and more, no glasses required.” As goes the gaming industry, goes the rest of the tech industry? Did the commercial help convince you?

Also to help get the public on-board the 3DS bandwagon, Nintendo set up Demo Pods in four cities (Chicago, New York, San Fransisco, and LA), so consumers can test out the 3DS for themselves. But, if you’re already sold, you can pre-order a 3DS for $249.99.

MyFive: Best NES Accessories and Features

This article was written on September 21, 2007 by CyberNet.

NES Console

The original Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) was a monster with its 2KB of RAM, and it rocked out with a 256×240 resolution. It’s hard to believe that such a good system was ever taken off of store shelves, but I guess that’s the lifecycle of technology.

We’re not ready to let go of the memories quite yet even though we no longer having one of the classic NES systems in our possession. For that reason we decided to put together a list of our five favorite NES features and accessories, and maybe it will make some of you to dust off the NES and give it another whirl for the weekend. After you get done reading our list make sure you drop a comment with what things you loved about the system, and whether you still own one!

  1. Power Pad – Who would have ever thought that running in place could be so fun? Sure there are more current games such as Dance Dance Revolution that have a similar accessory, but jumping hurdles has never been the same since the introduction of the Power Pad.

  2. Cleaning the Cartridges – It was always hard to believe how darn dusty those cartridges could get! I remember sitting there for several minutes at a time blowing into the cartridge trying to dislodge any dust particles that were clogging my gaming experience. And now we have CD/DVD discs? How’s the next generation of kids going to learn the meaning of patience?

  3. Power Glove – I don’t know how future game consoles never picked up on the Power Glove technology, but I sure miss it. This thing was as close to virtual reality as you could get at the time. If you’ve got a hard time remembering how cool this was checkout the commercial on YouTube.
    NES Power Glove
  4. Light Gun – Several other systems have tried to duplicate this creation, but it was inevitably the Duck Hunt that made it so popular. There’s even a similar rendition in Wii Play, but the better graphics and enhanced gameplay just aren’t a replacement for the legendary Duck Hunt.

  5. NES Advantage – This joystick was large and in charge. I remember setting that thing on my lap and it felt like I had a notebook computer branched across my legs. A combination of the oversized buttons and automatic repeated firing options made this my favorite accessory when playing Contra!

Nintendo posts first 3DS advert for the US, whets growing appetites (video)

For the last few remaining souls in North America not aware that the Nintendo 3DS is coming later this month, the Japanese company has rolled out its first US commercial. Shockingly enough, it doesn’t display anything not already announced, but now would be kind of late to be springing surprises on us anyhow, right? It’s a portable console with glasses-free 3D — that works reasonably well — and it’s made by Nintendo, which means half the people on your street will probably own one by this time next month. Jump past the break to see the American commercial and its earlier-released UK sibling — you’ll find a fun juxtaposition of presentation styles when comparing the two.

Angry Birds Marketing Head Talks Death of Consoles

toy fair 2011 angry birds pig.jpg

Earlier this month, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata told a crowd at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, “The value of games does not matter to them. The fact is, what we produce is value, and we should protect it.” Iwata was clearly taking a shot at Angry Birds and like-minded casual titles that have helped elevate platforms like Android and the iPhone into portable gaming machines.

A number of folks immediately took Iwata to task for his comments, most notably industry analyst Michael Pachter, who told the press, “Long-term, Nintendo is doomed. He’s under full frontal assault by Apple.”
Peter Vesterbacka, the marketing head for Angry Birds creator Rovio (who, let’s face it, has never been particularly afraid to speak his mind), took a shot against console gaming in general at South by Southwest this week, stating that the industry is “dying” thanks to the rise of simpler games like Angry Birds.
Vesterbacka added that larger developers with larger budgets aren’t capable of being as nimble or innovative as smaller upstart developers like Rovio.
Come on kids, words can only get you so far. Time to break out the slingshots.

Nintendo Wii Game We Dare Is Pulled From UK

WeDare.jpgNintendo has pulled a Ubisoft Wii game called We Dare from the UK market, due to risqué commercials within the title.

The commercials hit the Internet a few days ago, showing spanking, and other acts deemed more mature than the game’s PEGI 12 rated audience. Once the videos circled to UK, the local Government demanded it be pulled due to the inconsistent rating given by PEGI.

The commercials have since been banned in the US, but are still on Ubisoft YouTube channel being listed as private. No word on if other European countries will allow We Dare to be released.

Nintendo can remotely brick your 3DS after flash card use?

Bad news for those that plan on using a flash card with their 3DS — if Nintendo detects that you’ve been dabbing with one, the company might send a firmware update that could possibly brick your system. According to GoNintendo, Japanese retailer Enterking posted a warning message on their site, suggesting that your system might be unbootable after a software update if Nintendo detects you’ve been using an R4. Enterking is not buying used 3DSs that have a history of using an illegal cartridge — a transparent indication that it’s not taking any chances here. We can’t know for sure if Nintendo will dish out said update or how Enterking might tell — however, Nintendo did issue this statement to Eurogamer in response to their story on the topic:

“We do not discuss product security details (for obvious reasons), nor can we discuss the details of countermeasures available in the Nintendo 3DS system. Nintendo 3DS has the most up-to-date technology. The security has been designed to protect both the creative works in the software and to protect the Nintendo 3DS hardware system itself.

Nintendo, like most companies, takes a palpable stance against piracy. We recommend that those fortunate enough to own a 3DS stay away from the flash cards altogether, just in case.

Update: Flash cards aren’t illegal to use per se — homebrew, anyone? — although certain countries have banned them from import and sale, and their widespread use for illegal activity makes them a dubious proposition quite often.

Nyko solves your 3DS battery concerns with Power Pak+

Nyko solves your 3DS battery concerns with Power Pak+

If you took the time to peruse our early review of the Nintendo 3DS, and it sure looks like a lot of you did, you’re probably well aware that battery life is a serious concern. We managed just over three hours on a charge, which is really bad for a handheld gaming console. Nyko is the first to offer a solution, the Power Pak+, which actually replaces the stock Nintendo pack, screwing on to the back and offering double the battery life — which still sadly doesn’t approach the longevity of the DS Lite. The company is also releasing a new charging stand that will let you juice up that pack just by setting it down, useful because once you affix this bump the stock charging pad won’t work. The Power Pak+ will cost $19.99 and ships on March 27, while the Charge Base is $29.99 and hits stores a week later. It’ll be up to you to provide the pants with bigger pockets necessary for the extra bulk added here.
