Nikkei: Nintendo’s Wii Fit plus coming to make weight loss competitive, Internet fun

Wii Fit not cutting the fat fast enough? Don’t sweat it, the house of Mario is getting ready to make your weight loss competitive. According to Japan’s Nikkei business daily, Nintendo will be launching its Wii Fit plus in autumn that will let users compete with friends and family over the Internet to “lose weight and other activities” — the latter presumably hinting at cruel taunting Miis with the ability to point and laugh at the fatties. The new balance board is said to feature more precise measurements to better hone your sense of embarrassment and shame. E3 kicks off next week where we’ll undoubtedly hear more if the rumor is true.

Nintendo handheld packs 76 old games behind one tiny screen

Ben Heck forum member Brian has built us a sweet little Nintendo-on-a-chip handheld that puts a Super Joy III KIRF TV game, a 2.5-inch display, a controller, and 4 AA batteries under the same roof. This bad boy not only allows you to play 76 games on the go (though, sadly, not at the same time), but it looks great doing it as well. Hit up that video after the read link and see for yourself.

Nintendo: we’re not making a phone, we swear

Despite a statement back in April from prez Satoru Iwata that the company would make a phone if it could avoid monthly subscription costs, it looks like Nintendo will not be getting into the cell biz any time soon. Reggie Fils-Aime, president and CFO of Nintendo of America just put the kibosh on all that with a statement to the New York Times, saying, “Telephony is not in our wheelhouse. It’s not something I anticipate us getting into.” So, you’re telling us that telephony is not in your wheelhouse? Hmm… okay. Thanks for clearing that up! The company is however, considering offering devices with always-on wireless connectivity — which would be way cooler the DSi‘s current, WiFi hotspot capabilities.

Wal-Mart making move for Circuit City’s old slice of the pie, prepping for Apple sections, Pre sales and higher-end electronics

While Wal-Mart will always be our hot spot of choice for picking up a mixed assortment box of granola bars and meeting other thrifty, outdoors-loving singles, the retailer is on a course to upping its electronics game, in light of the void left by Circuit City’s closure — about $11.1 billion in annual revenue just there for the taking. The store is rolling out new boutique sections for Apple and Nintendo products to some of its electronics departments this week, is adding to its selection higher-end Sony and Samsung televisions, will be expanding its Blu-ray equipment and selection, is nabbing some Studio One 19 all-in-ones from Dell next month, and obviously is getting the Palm Pre next month as well. Apple has been traditionally slow to offer up its higher-end products to Wal-Mart shelves, so hopefully this means that not only will Wal-Mart be doing Macs “right,” but perhaps Apple will give a little in return and offer some more sub-$1000 macs beyond the Mac mini and low-end MacBook — some Laptop Hunters fare, if you will.

Retro Mini Handheld plays NES cartridges, brings tears of nostalgia to our eyes

We’ve seen scads of portable NES mods in the past but still: this is probably relevant to your interests. ThinkGeek’s got a new portable gaming system on offer, the Retro Mini Handheld. It plays all those 8-bit cartridges you’ve had stacked in your room next to your hi-fi since the olden days, and it’s got a pretty attractive look. Sure, the cartridge is essentially bigger than the handheld itself, but that’s part of its charm as far as we can tell. It’s got a 2.4-inch LCD and takes four AA batteries for about 8 hours of game time, and it’s available now for $49.99. There’s one more shot after the break.

[Thanks, Adam]

Keepin’ it real fake, part CCVI: yet another Balance Board edition

Why should authentic, honest-to-goodness Wii owners be the only ones to indulge in some mindless escapism — or a spirited virtual workout, for that matter? To this end, the heads at Chinavasion have dreamt up a two-tone, quasi-legal Balance Board KIRF for you and your game console. Sure, this is by no means the first such beast we’ve seen, and there’s no telling whether or not this bad boy is compatible with your , MiWi2, or Chintendo Vii, but it does sport handsome light blue accents. Take one home for $67.91, or save a few shekles and buy ’em in lots of three or more. Intrigued? Take a closer look for yourself after the break.

Survey finds Nintendo to be the most reputable game company

It’s fresh from celebrating the Game Boy’s twentieth birthday and solid sales of the DSi, but it looks like Nintendo already has some more good news to boast about, with the Reputation Institutes’s annual survey finding that it is by far the most reputable game company around, and the sixth most reputable company overall. That ranking is made all the more impressive by the fact that Nintendo apparently wasn’t even in the top 200 in last year’s list, and by the fact that it’s the only strictly gaming company on the list at all, although Microsoft and Sony come in at 30 and 126, respectively. Hit up the read link below to check out the complete rankings.

Gadget Musician Directs iPhone, DS Orchestra

I love it when musicians dork out with their gadgets, and the video above demonstrates you can still be a one-man act even with five devices — with the help of a Belkin Rockstar multi-headphone splitter. To create the catchy loop, this hardware DJ ran various music apps on a Nintendo DS, a DSi, an iPhone, an iPod Touch and a Kaossilator. Seems like a complicated setup, but a fun bonding moment for your gadgets.
