Nokia E6 hits Amazon unlocked, loaded, and available for pre-order

It isn’t easy being a US-based Nokia fan in 2011. The Finnish handset manufacturer just doesn’t get a lot of love from stateside carriers. Thankfully, however, the company’s phones do pop up unlocked through sites like Amazon, which, as it so happens, has opened up pre-orders for the Symbian Anna-rocking E6. You can get your thumbs on the smartphone’s QWERTY keyboard for $446, when it start shipping in one to two months, chock full of Ovi-branded goodness.

[Thanks, Matthew]

Nokia Beats Apple In Patent Dispute

Apple has settled a patent dispute with Nokia that has been rattling through the courts since 2009. The struggling Finnish mobile giant sued Apple, claiming that it had infringed on ten patents, and then added another 36 to the mix in the following years. These patents covered everything from touchscreen scrolling to Wi-Fi to “multitasking operating systems, data synchronization, positioning, call quality and the use of Bluetooth accessories.”

Apple of course counter-sued, but it appears that it wasn’t in as strong a position as it would have liked and was finally forced to back down. Both companies have now settled all legal action against each other.

The terms of the deal are a secret, but we know that Apple will first pay a cash settlement and then an ongoing license fee to Nokia. If the troubled Nokia’s business continues to go downhill, this could become quite a significant source of income.

In fact, Nokia CEO Steven Elop hinted that patent-trolling might be big business in the future. “We are very pleased to have Apple join the growing number of Nokia licensees,” he said in a statement, continuing that it “enables us to focus on further licensing opportunities in the mobile-communications market.” If that doesn’t signal patent-trolling, I don’t know what does.

The lack of official figures hasn’t stopped analysts from guessing at the amounts involved. Speaking to the Wall Street Journal, Swedbank’s Jari Honko pulled the figure of €500 million (around $722 million) out of the air.

Meanwhile, speaking to MarketWatch, MKM partners’ Tero Kuittinen also had a crack at guessing the numbers. “I am assuming that the licensing fee would be probably 4 euros per iPhone” he said. And the Globe and Mail reports that “Analysts said Nokia could be estimated to get between 1 and 2 per cent of iPhone revenue.”

We may get an idea of the amounts involved when Nokia makes its second quarter earnings announcement, the targets for which it lowered two weeks ago. Of course, this probably won’t make a huge difference to a company whose shares have fallen by 43% already this year. To really bounce back, Nokia needs to concentrate on making a kick-ass phone that uses all of its clever patents, instead of whining when somebody else does it.

Or we guess that it could just sue Android.

Nokia enters into patent license agreement with Apple [Nokia]

Apple and Nokia patent dispute ends with license agreement, Apple payments

It’s over. The patent battle between Nokia and Apple just ended not with an injunction, but with a press release citing a license agreement and payments from Apple to Espoo. The specifics of the agreement are confidential, but Nokia does say that Apple will make a one-time payment followed by on-going royalties. So, while Nokia may be having trouble selling its zombied handsets, at least its IP portfolio can help fill the coffers during the transition to Windows Phone. Read the full press release after the break.

CE-Oh no he didn’t!: Stephen Elop says ‘Apple created Android,’ the conditions necessary for its existence

Nokia’s freshman CEO is speaking at the Open Mobile Summit right now. As expected, he’s covering the same ol’ ground, explaining why Nokia ditched Symbian and MeeGo to build the “third ecosystem” with Microsoft — you know, after totally dominating the high-end smartphone market just three years ago. He’s also being credited with the following quote:

“Apple created Android, or at least created the conditions necessary for Android to come into being”

We’re on to you, Mr. Elop. It’s a classic diversionary tactic. Get the one and two smartphone / tablet OS vendors squabbling and then execute a flanking maneuver while nobody’s watching. Why else would the Nokia CEO make such an emotive claim? Unless it’s true?

Rich Green, Nokia CTO, takes leave of absence for ‘personal reasons’

Rich Green’s only been with Nokia since 2010, making his way onto the leadership team in February when the Elopcalypse rolled through Espoo. As CTO, the former VP of Sun Microsystems is charged with defining Nokia’s technology vision; be it hardware, software, user experience, cloud services, or developer programs. So yeah, he’s the guy looking at what’s next, what’s beyond Windows Phone and S40. Well, we just got official word from Nokia that he’s taking a leave of absence for an unspecified duration for “personal reasons.” Of course, that could mean anything — business is always personal, regardless of those empty bromides tossed around whenever something distasteful happens between corporate personalities. The story first broke in the Finnish newspaper Helsingin Sanomat, citing two independent sources claiming that Green likely won’t be returning to the company because of disagreements over strategy. Interesting, don’t you think?

Update: Reuters says that Henry Tirri, head of Nokia Research Center, will be acting CTO

Today’s World IPv6 Day: Google, Bing, Facebook and others test out new addresses for 24 hours

Described as a “test flight” of IPv6, today marks the biggest concerted effort by some of the web’s marquee players to turn us all on to the newer, fancier web addressing system. Internet Protocol version 4 has been the template by which we’ve addressed everything connected to the web so far, but that stuff’s now nearing exhaustion, so the future demands a longer, more complex nomenclature to tell our smartphones, tablets, printers, and other webOS devices apart. For end users, June 8th won’t really feel too different from June 7th — this will be a change that occurs mostly behind the scenes and there’s an IPv4 fallback option if you can’t connect in the modern way — but Google does warn that a very limited subset of users may experience connectivity issues as a result. Hit the links below to see how well prepared for the future you are.

The ‘oh sh_t’ moment that Nokia decided to abandon MeeGo

Bloomberg Businessweek just published an amazingly thorough piece on Nokia, pre- and post-Elopcalypse. We’ve long wondered how MeeGo, an OS that Stephen Elop himself said “inspires both confidence and excitement” in October 2010, could be cast aside so quickly in favor of Windows Phone, an OS still struggling to find traction in the heated smartphone market. Well, now we know. Bloomberg recounts a January 3rd meeting between Nokia’s Chief Development Officer Kai Oistämö and Nokia’s freshman CEO. After Kai expressed his concern with MeeGo’s ability to effectively respond to Apple’s iOS and Android operating systems, the two decided to interview two dozen “influential employees” about MeeGo, ranging from execs to engineers. Here’s how Bloomberg recounts the events that followed:

Before the first interview, Elop drew out what he knew about the plans for MeeGo on a whiteboard, with a different color marker for the products being developed, their target date for introduction, and the current levels of bugs in each product. Soon the whiteboard was filled with color, and the news was not good: At its current pace, Nokia was on track to introduce only three MeeGo-driven models before 2014-far too slow to keep the company in the game. Elop tried to call Oistämö, but his phone battery was dead. “He must have been trying an Android phone that day,” says Elop. When they finally spoke late on Jan. 4, “It was truly an oh-s–t moment-and really, really painful to realize where we were,” says Oistämö. Months later, Oistämö still struggles to hold back tears. “MeeGo had been the collective hope of the company,” he says, “and we’d come to the conclusion that the emperor had no clothes. It’s not a nice thing.”

Nokia is now on track to release at least one Windows Phone handset in 2011 with a dozen more in 2012.

Nokia N8 Pink gets creepy dismembered doll treatment, even more pink (video)

Earlier this month, we were rather unimpressed with Nokia’s rebranding of the N8 Symbian smartphone, and it seems someone took note. Because the promo video for the N8 Pink is anything but unimaginative. In fact, it’s downright frightening. The video features a series of contorted Barbies dolls, prancing about in Lady Gaga-esque undergarments, with accompaniment by British girl group Sugababes. This is one marketing campaign we won’t soon forget. For a glimpse at the disturbingly enthralling cotton-candy romp, check out the video after the break.

[Thanks, Dillan]
