HTC HD7 leaks out once more with Dolby Sound, stars in a brief video

HTC may have stemmed the flood of HD7 activity, but details about the 4.3-inch Windows Phone 7 device keep leaking out. Today, an O2 Germany tipster blew off most of the remaining doors. We’ve got what appears to be a full spec sheet confirming a 1GHz processor, 8GB of storage and 5 megapixel camera but also detailing internal memory, a full complement of sensors, quad-band radio frequencies, 802.11 b/g/n WiFi and more. There’s also a few pictures sizing up the HD7 alongside a Galaxy S, a training slide for the hopefully-more-than-a-marketing-buzzword “Dolby Mobile Sound,” and for what we believe is the very first time, a cameo appearance on video. Our tipster says it’ll launch in Germany in just two weeks at €559 (about $770) or €79 ($109) on a two-year contract. Tempting, no? Video after the break.

Windows Phone 7 confirmed for all five major UK mobile operators

This will hardly be the most surprising thing you’ll hear today, but Microsoft has officially confirmed that all five major operators in the United Kingdom — Vodafone, O2, T-Mobile, Orange, and Three — have signed up to offer its Windows Phone 7 handsets when they make their long-awaited debut in the coming weeks. Additionally, the Carphone Warehouse and Phones 4U will also be stocking WP7 devices.

London, New York on track for subway cellular coverage?

After nearly three years of setbacks, if New York City isn’t careful it looks like London just might win the race to extend cellular service to its underground transit system. The plan laid out by London Mayor Boris Johnson calls for the UK’s big five wireless carriers (Vodafone, O2, Orange, T-Mobile, and 3) to cover the cost (some “hundreds of millions of pounds,” according to the Telegraph) for a system that should hopefully wire the Tube by the 2012 Olympics. Meanwhile, the New York plan came back to life recently when Broadcast Australia purchased a majority stake in Transit Wireless, which was awarded some $46 million to wire subway platforms and select tunnels back in 2007 — and which apparently threw in the towel shortly thereafter. Unlike the New York plan, London’s won’t be limited to the platforms, which is great news for Britons who like to listen to obnoxious strangers’ cellphone conversations.

Another HTC HD7 leak: mid-October looks like a go, price is €559 without contract

We’re getting very used to spotting the as-yet-unannounced Windows Phone 7-powered HD7 embedded in tables of serial numbers and release dates, and while, you know, a picture would be nice, it’s good to see that it still exists in the world of carrier databases. WMPoweruser.com has a leaked O2 Germany lineup courtesy of a tipster, and that chart names an HTC HD7 for the 42nd week of the year, which lines up nicely with that original October 18 rumor we heard for O2 in the UK. What’s more, this chart names a price, with €79 on a two year €20 monthly contract, and a hefty €559 tag if you’d like to go contract free. We suppose that sort of decision making is best left for after we’ve seen the handset, but we won’t judge if you’d rather just rush in headlong — with the HD series pedigree, we doubt you’ll be disappointed.

WSJ: iPhone 4 to be offered by Vodafone and O2 in Germany as T-Mobile loses exclusivity

The last bastion of Applephone exclusivity in Europe is about to be toppled, according to the Wall Street Journal, as Deutsche Telekom is said to be preparing for the loss of its iPhone 4 monopoly ahead of this year’s holiday shopping season. Citing separate sources familiar with the matter, this report suggests that Vodafone and O2’s German arms are earnestly reaching out for Apple’s latest and greatest, and while distribution deals haven’t yet been finalized, negotiations have reached an “advanced stage.” Much as with O2’s UK exclusivity deal, Apple looks to have opted against extending its arrangement with Deutsche Telekom’s T-Mobile in an effort to reach the widest possible consumer base. Makes a lot of sense to us, now how about doing the same back home?

HTC HD3 to be named HD7 in honor of Windows Phone 7, launch October 18?

Ooh boy, do we have a good one for you today. We’ve been tipped off that the HD3 — HTC’s mythical successor to the wildly popular HD2 — is not only alive and kicking, but headed for a bright and sunny Windows Phone 7 future, starting as early as October 18. Before we get too far ahead of ourselves, all the evidence we have for now is the above spreadsheet, which we’re told is an internal planning doc from UK carrier O2. It’s not exactly the hardest thing in the world to forge so keep your skeptical wits about you, but as silly as this inflationary renaming to HD7 may sound, we find it strangely believable. After all, why wouldn’t the company that brought us the Incredible Wildfire of Desire jump ahead a few numbers to keep up with the hot new OS’ numbering?

[Thanks, ZaK]

London Police Bust Suspected iPhone Crime Ring

London detectives on Wednesday arrested nine people suspected of a massive iPhone and credit card scam.

The suspected thieves — eight men and one woman — are accused of using fake credit cards and identities to purchase iPhones on in the UK, and then selling them through a middle man for up to £450 each.

UK carrier O2 contacted police after noticing a loss of £1.2 million worth of premium phone calls that the alleged thieves placed with the fraudulent phone accounts, leading police to a monthlong investigation.

The officers seized about £15,000 worth of brand new mobile phones, along with hundreds of other SIM cards, computers, cash and fake documents in raids in London, Southend, Walsall, Birmingham and Middlesbrough, according to BBC News, which originally reported the story.

How-to: figure out the best value iPhone 4 contracts in the UK

Choices, choices. Do you get the 16GB or 32GB iPhone 4? The black one now or the white one a little later? We can’t tell you which variant of Apple’s next phone will hold its value best over the coming months, but we can try to clear up a bit of the fogginess surrounding price plans on offer from UK networks. Orange and O2 are the first to drop handset pricing and full contract details, but they haven’t made it easy for the discerning buyer, with each carrier offering more than a dozen options. Vodafone, T-Mobile, Three, and even Tesco Mobile are set to follow suit in the coming days and weeks, but we thought we’d get the ball rolling with the pair we have now.

P.S. — And just as we publish this, Voda has gone official with its tariffs. We’ve now broken them down into a more digestible format as well. Just for you.

Dell Streak review

Streak. It needs no introduction, as this slate’s been gaining a lot of attention amongst gadget lovers around the world. Thanks to the UK launch last Friday, we were one of the first on this planet to procure Dell’s finalized Android 1.6 phone from O2. Yep, you heard right — Engadget’s now in possession of two Streaks, with the older one still in its original and somewhat unstable prototype state. Our new toy sports a matte “carbon” finish instead of chrome (no word on future availability; the red version’s coming in two weeks’ time), and now 399MB of RAM instead of 405MB (according to Android System Info app; yet it’s advertised as 512MB). Anyhow, now that we have the real deal, there’s plenty to go through, so join us after the break to see if the Streak’s really going to start a new trend.
