Hasta La Gadget!

It seems like we’re getting closer and closer to the arrival of the Palm Pre 2 and webOS 2.0, and it looks like Verizon will be in the mix — we were just sent this image of Big Red’s internal VZLearn portal showing Pre 2 device training. We still don’t know when it’ll actually hit or what pricing will be like, and we don’t know if it’ll hit Sprint and AT&T as well like the OG Pre, but we’re guessing we’ll find out soon enough — keep a sharp eye, we’ll let you know.

We feel your pain: you love your BlackBerry at work and your iPhone for personal use, but as hardware goes, nothing gets your motor running quite like the Pre’s pebble-esque shell. Trust us, we’ve all been there! Well, a new clone out of China seeks solve all your technological woes by combining an iOS-inspired user interface and the Pre’s body — with an iPhone home button thrown in for good measure, of course — and when the time comes to throw on the suit and tie and head to work, you can switch the UI over to BlackBerry mode. As far as we can tell, it still functions like an iOS clone here, but at least the skin will remind you of the good ol’ Bold days. Looks like you can’t buy this thing online, but considering how well the software works in most of these things, it’s probably for the best.

Sure, the Mark Hurd departure has given HP quite an interesting (if not tumultuous) place in the news cycle, but here’s one that’s gotta sting pretty bad on its own. TechCrunch reports — and independent sources confirm with us — that Peter Skillman, the man with 11 years tenure and the reported designer of the Pre, has left HP / Palm. He joins… sorry, we need to catch our breath here… Michael Abbot, Mike Bell, Lynn Fox, Matias Duarte, Rich Dellinger, and Caitlin Spaan. That’s all the Senior VPs (and almost all the VPs) now gone. We hope CEO Jon Rubinstein isn’t feeling too lonely with most of his one-time dream team having defected en masse. [Photo Credit]

What we really want from HP is a brand new webOS smartphone, but it’d be unfair to say we’d “settle” for a Palm Pre — especially at prices like these. To commemorate the opening of the new HP Wireless store, the company’s offering both Pre Plus and Pixi Plus, on AT&T or Verizon, free of charge for a limited time. Not only that, but these handsets feature free shipping, and the Pre comes with free accessories (including a Bluetooth headset, car charger and leather case) to boot. Meanwhile, Sprint’s still sitting in the corner all alone, expecting folks to slap down cash money (up to $100) for these handsets’ original incarnations. If you own a Pre, you like to tempt fate, and you don’t faint at the mere thought of your phone melting into a nondescript heap of plastic and silicon, have we got some exciting news for you: some crazy dude with a death wish has somehow eked an honest gigahertz out of the Pre’s OMAP3430 processor that normally plods along at 600MHz. Of course, this isn’t the first time the phone’s been overclocked, but traditionally, those overclocks have topped out around 800MHz — so if you need serious speed and don’t mind nuking your battery at a record pace, this so-called “F105 Thunderchief” kernel project is one that you’re going to want to keep an eye on. The project’s owner says “do not install this if you like your phone,” so… you know, proceed with extreme caution, especially considering that your warranty’s probably going to dry up as fast as your battery.
