Hands-on with Panasonic’s 0.33-inch thick Neo PDP Eco plasma

Panasonic ended its press conference today with a bang as it debuted the 0.33-inch thick Neo PDP Eco plasma display. We’re still scrambling to find out how close this thing is to production, but good heavens, it’s sexy. Have a look below.

Hands-on with Panasonic’s DMP-B15 portable Blu-ray player at CES 2009

We didn’t have high hopes going into Panny’s press conference today, but the company still managed to unveil a few surprises here in Vegas. One of those shockers was the world’s first portable Blu-ray player, the DMP-. Said device supposedly includes the ability to pump out 1080p content, and while we’re not terribly enthused about the design, we suppose we’ll give it a pass being that’s a world first.

Panasonic introduces wireless, 1-inch thick TC-P54Z1 VIERA plasma

Here at the Panasonic press conference at CES 2009, the company finally woke us up with a stunningly thin 1-inch thick plasma: the all new Z1, or the TC-P54Z1 VIERA, in particular. Little is being said about the panel for now, though we are told that it’ll be wireless (via an undisclosed standard) right out of the box. In related news, we’re also told that VIERA Cast-enabled sets will soon be able to suck down Amazon on Demand content, so it’s good to see Panny keeping up with with the Jones family in that regard as well.

Panasonic’s SDR-H80 / HDC-TM300 camcorders break cover

Panasonic‘s press event has yet to go down here at CES, but two camcorders have already surfaced on the outfit’s Japanese portal. The entry-level SDR-H80 houses a 60GB hard drive, 2.7-inch LCD monitor, SD recording, face detection capabilities and optical image stabilization. The entirely more riveting HDC-TM300 comes with a 9.15-megapixel sensor to capture Full HD footage, and the internal 32GB hard drive (coupled with the SD / SDHC slot) should give you plenty of room. This one captures in MPEG-4 AVC / H.264, and reportedly it even supports 5.1-channel audio recording. Mum’s the word on a US price or release, but hopefully we’ll be hearing more real soon.

Panasonic introduces standalone paperless fax machine

Standalone fax machines may have long ago lost the momentum game to multi-function devices, but it looks like Panasonic is doing its best to pry things back away from the printer and scanner, with its new PW608DL offering one stand-out feature that’s sure to attract a bit of attention: paperless faxing. Apparently, you can either send faxes cellphone-style using the machine’s built-in keypad, or send documents stored on an SD card (but not a USB drive, it seems). Any faxes received are simply displayed on the device’s 3.9-inch LCD and, yes, they can be printed out as well. Unfortunately, it looks like this wonder of technology is exclusive to Japan for the foreseeable future — please try not to be too envious.

Panasonic set to unveil powerline networking prototypes aplenty at CES

Panasonic already has a few powerline networking products to call its own (including the adapters pictured at right), but it looks like it’s going to be expanding things in a fairly big way at CES next month, with it even set to bring some electric cars into the mix. That latter bit comes in the form of a prototype networking system that promises to let a variety of devices connect to an electric vehicle as it charges in the garage, letting you ensure that everything is set just right for when you drive out the next day. Other devices apparently on tap include an HD-PLC adapter for a security camera, and an electrical monitoring system of some sort. As you might expect, however, details on any of them are pretty light at the moment, but you can be sure that we’ll be digging up what we can as soon as Panasonic officially takes the wraps off ’em.

Panasonic debuts password-protected whiteboards

While Panasonic’s two newest whiteboards lack those snazzy multitouch capabilities, they posses something only the true undercover FBI agent posing as a first grade teacher could appreciate. The film and steel boards look pretty traditional at first glance, but underneath of that plain jane facade is a highly advanced security system. You see, each board can accept passwords, which will in turn restrict the ability to transfer information from the board to USB flash memory. For those cleared for access, the whiteboards can transfer on-screen information to a PC via USB, though we suspect you’ll have to handle the encryption on your end. ‘Course, neither of these will run you cheap, but you know your underground supervisor won’t mind shelling out upwards of two large to make sure schematics to rule the world aren’t intercepted by meddling rivals.
