Android developer Yifan Lu has reverse engineered the Xperia Play’s native PlayStation emulator to make it run ripped PSX ISOs. That means you’re no longer limited to Crash Bandicoot or the handful of other PSX titles that have officially trickled out from Sony Ericsson. Instead, you can grab your original games from the attic, rip them into disc images, and bring them back to life on your Play. Er, assuming that’s legal, of course. Perhaps you should move to Papua New Guinea before trying it. We’ve attached one of Lu’s videos to prove that his tweaked emulator actually works. His custom ISO of choice? More Bandicoot.

It’s been a long time coming, but it’s finally here — or at least its pre-order page is. Sony’s hotly anticipated PlayStation Vita has been on our minds since January, and now it’s making its Canadian North American pre-order debut via Best Buy Canada. The product pages for both the WiFi-only and 3G editions list a release date of March 30th — which lines up with previous reports that the console won’t be gracing your stocking this Christmas — but we’d take that estimate with a heaping fistful of salt. If you’re itching to throw down some Canadian dollars, however, feel free to hop on over to the source to secure yours now.

How can this be? Sony’s new handheld console already passed through the FCC and was even leaked on a UK Blockbuster flyer that stated an October release date. Yet apparently these clues count for nothing, because Bloomberg reports Kazuo Hirai as saying that the Vita won’t launch in the US and Europe until early next year — with only Japan getting the device before Christmas. Why would Sony be content to miss out on all that festive trade? We have absolutely no idea, but it looks like we’ll have to email Santa a revised wish list.

That label up there may not look like much, but the WiFi test report shown after the break makes one thing exceptionally clear: Sony’s PlayStation Vita just cleared FCC testing. For those unfamiliar with the process, this is widely regarded as the final step before a consumer electronics device is shipped to retailers here in the States, and given that “fall” date we’ve been hearing about, it sure looks as if Sony’s on pace to keep its promise. So, you did save room on this year’s wish list for yet another console… right?

The next time you go into a Gamestop store, you may get a little extra pressure to purchase a PlayStation 3.  Gamer’s Reports is reporting that their source at Gamestop says that Sony is running a contest for Gamestop managers. In other words, they’re bribing managers to step-up their game and sell more PS3’s.

Essentially, each store will have a target amount of PS3’s that they are supposed to sell based upon previous averages.  The manager within a district whose store sells the most above what their target was will win 20,000 points that will be redeemable for Sony/Gamestop items. Additionally, the manager who is number one for the whole company will get 10,000 more points.

The rewards site requires a username and password, so it’s not clear what 20,000 or 30,000 points will buy. I imagine it’s gotta be something good if it’s supposed to motivate managers to sell record amounts of PS3’s.

Okay, perhaps it’s not bribery. This kinda thing has been done in the industry before, but it does seem like a pretty desperate way to get more sales, if you ask me.

Price Cut?

In other PS3 news, Sony may be cutting the price  on the game console sometime this year. Sony’s president Ryoji Chubachi says that Sony “does not rule out the possibility of lowering the price.” It is rumored that the price would drop $100 before the Christmas season.

So is it the price that’s keeping people from purchasing the Playstation 3? If so, what’s a fair price?
