Firefox 3 Gets “Real” Page Zoom with Image Scaling

This article was written on July 30, 2007 by CyberNet.

Firefox 3 ZoomThe Firefox development team has finally resolved what was probably the longest outstanding bug for the browser: full page zoom. Up until now Firefox has only been capable of increasing and decreasing the size of text to simulate zooming, but now it handles images as well! The funny part is that it only took 8-years for this bug to get fixed. :)

This is something that the Opera browser has had ever since I can remember, and it is something I’ve always longed for in Firefox. Heck, even Internet Explorer 7 has some sort of zoom capabilities that also scales images, but the results are typically not the best.

To get it in Firefox 3 you’ll need to be using the latest nightly build, along with this extension. The extension is just a temporary fix that lets you add buttons to the navigation bar for zooming, and without it there is no way to take advantage of the new zoom capabilities. Eventually the developers will get the feature integrated with the browser, but the extension is the best way to test it out for those that want to see what it is like.

The results are much better than what Internet Explorer 7 produces, but not quite as good as Opera’s. I noticed in Firefox 3 that it has problems scaling some Flash and JavaScript objects, and one example of this can be seen in the screenshot above where it didn’t actually scale the contents of the ad located at the top of the screen nor the one at the top of the sidebar. I’m sure that these are just some bugs that they will be working out, and I look forward to seeing this feature in full swing when Firefox 3 gets released!

Windows 7 Download Available, Users Wait for Product Keys

This article was written on January 09, 2009 by CyberNet.

ces 2009.png

Big news came Wednesday at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) when Steve Ballmer said that they would be releasing a copy of Windows 7 Beta today that the public can actually get their hands on. The Beta build leaked a few weeks prior to the official announcement, and there was a lot of excitement because early reports were saying that it was stable, efficient, and a huge improvement over Vista. Naturally people were wanting to kickoff their downloads early today because grabbing 2.4GB is not a 2-minute task.

Surprise! Right now the Windows 7 site has a message up that essentially says the demand was more than what they anticipated:

Thanks for your interest in the Windows 7 Beta. The volume has been phenomenal—we’re in the process of adding more servers to handle the demand. We’re sorry for the delay and we’ll re-post the Beta as soon as we can ensure a quality download experience.

Over at Lifehacker they managed to scrounge up some direct download links for both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions, which is handy for those wanting to get the download going overnight. Here are the links:

The only problem now is waiting to get your hands on one of the 2.5 million product keys they are handing out for this round of testing. What boggles my mind is the fact that Microsoft isn’t letting people just sign-up so that they could receive the product key, and then let users download the OS from an alternative source if they don’t want to wait (*cough* BitTorrent). Heck, a lot of the people probably have the leaked copy installed and all they need is the product key to activate Windows 7 Beta.

P.S. This Beta release will expire on August 1st, 2009 even after entering the product key. If you don’t enter a product key you can still run Windows 7 Beta for 30 days.

New RSS Bandit Synchronizes with Google Reader

This article was written on June 23, 2008 by CyberNet.

rss bandit google sync-1.jpgarrow Windows Windows only arrow
It’s been a long time coming, but it looks as though we might have our first full-fledged desktop feed reader that supports synchronization with Google Reader. The RSS Bandit blog announced over the weekend that they have released version 1.7 Alpha that is capable of downloading podcasts as well as synchronizing feeds with Google Reader.

The reason why something like this is nice is that it lets you have a functional desktop feed reader when you’re at your computer, but then you can always access your feeds online when you’re on-the-go. Google Reader’s mobile interface is especially nice, which is the main reason that I’m excited to see the open source RSS Bandit application support it.

Once you follow the few steps in the RSS Bandit synchronization wizard you’ll be able to access your feeds from anywhere. This includes any feeds you unsubscribe/subscribe to, renaming feeds, marking feed items as read, and you can even share items just like you can from Google Reader’s online interface. Pretty nice, huh?

Now if only RSS Bandit was cross-platform. ;)

Windows 7 Taskbar Screenshots & Video

This article was written on October 28, 2008 by CyberNet.

Microsoft unveiled Windows 7 today at the Professional Developers Conferences (PDC). There wasn’t anything too unbelievable, but they did show off a revamped Taskbar that some are saying is inspired by Mac’s Dock. Windows 7 will use what looks like oversized quick launch icons. Don’t be fooled though. Those icons are used to not only start apps, but also switch between them. Here’s how Microsoft’s Windows Blog explains the new “tiles” on the Taskbar:

The new Windows Taskbar in Windows 7 focuses on application “tiles”. These application tiles can be arranged or re-arranged anywhere on the Windows Taskbar simply by grabbing the tiles and moving them where ever you want on the taskbar. Users will be able to “pin” applications they use the most to the new Windows Taskbar via the Start Menu by simply dragging and dropping those apps from the Start Menu to the Windows Taskbar.

What makes it even more interesting is that when you hover over one of the tiles you’ll see a live preview of all the application’s open windows. You can then use those previews to switch between each of the different windows… kind of like tabs:

And it still gets better. Those preview windows are a bit too small to see intricate details, and Microsoft has finally realized that. So now when you hover over one of those previews it will immediately bring that particular window to the front of the screen so that you can clearly see its contents. If you hover off the preview it will be sent back to the position where it resided.

One of the last things I wanted to show off is Microsoft more extensive use of “glass” throughout the operating system. Now when you want to preview the desktop it will make the windows on top transparent leaving a glass-like frame to hold their place:

In the end I think Microsoft is definitely on the right track with the new Taskbar in Windows 7. Plus I’m really loving the fact that you can see both the date and time without needing a double-height taskbar.

Don’t forget to check out what’s new in Windows 7 Media Center, and enjoy some more screenshots courtesy of Channel 10 at Microsoft…

T-Mobile G-Slate and G2X dual-core smartphone coming on April 20th?

LG, you big tease! T-Mobile must be feeling a tinge of regret for hooking up with the Korean hardware manufacturer lately, as TmoNews reports both the G-Slate tablet and a new G2X smartphone (believed to be the US moniker for the Optimus 2X) won’t be coming Stateside for at least another month. Neither will be exactly late, mind you, since both feature dual-core Tegra 2 chips and the G-Slate runs Google’s freshest Honeycomb software, however a launch date of April 20th does put LG a step behind its direct competitors. Motorola has already rolled out its own Xoom and Atrix alternatives, while Samsung is making noise about its new Galaxy devices, which might well beat LG’s wares to the market. Rumor is we’ll get an official date out of T-Mobile at CTIA next week, so keep your eyes peeled for that one.

Download The New Microsoft Max With RSS Capabilities

This article was written on September 09, 2006 by CyberNet.

Microsoft Max

Microsoft has released yet another Beta version of their software codename Max. It has already been in development for almost a year and seems to be progressing nicely, but slowly. In that time they seemed to have focused primarily on letting users manage photos and create slideshows to share with their friends. They even made it easy to write on the image which is great for Tablet PC users. Here is what the annotation looks like:

Microsoft Max Photo Annotation

It also has a news reader and the most recent version of Max, that was released today, now has RSS capabilities. The screenshot below is what the news page looks like, however, I grabbed these screenshots off of their site. Once I heard that it had RSS capabilities and a “newspaper” layout I thought I would give it a shot. Apparently I thought wrong because it is not compatible with Vista!? Here is what the general news layout looks like:

Microsoft Max News

I don’t have an XP machine easily accessible at this moment to play with the new feature but the interface does look pretty sleek. I am wondering how their RSS reader works because I couldn’t find any screenshots of an RSS feed being displayed. I wonder if it is the same as the general news layout pictured above?

I am addicted to using GreatNews as my feed reader because it is free (at least while they’re testing it) and it supports the newspaper layout. After you read your feeds in the newspaper layout I don’t think you can go back to the Outlook style.

If someone decides to give this a try then maybe you could send a screenshot of the RSS page that I can post to the article. Send it to tech@cybernetnews.com but make sure you are running Windows XP SP2 otherwise you won’t be able to install Microsoft Max.

Update:
Thanks to Pierre who sent in the screenshot with the RSS in action. You can notice the “Add Web Feed” option but I would have liked to see them implement a more condense list of feeds rather than the large buttons. It does look nice though.

Download Windows Live Mail Desktop Beta

Download Windows Live Mail Desktop

Are you getting sick of using Outlook Express? Well, then go ahead and download the new Windows Live Mail Desktop Beta. The software has a lot of nice features like the built-in RSS reader but the advertisement on the right-side of the screen gets a little annoying. They never put the advertisement in Outlook Express so I don’t know why they felt the need to put it in there. Here are some of the features you will find in it:

  • Speedy access to multiple e-mail accounts in one place (even AOL and Gmail)
  • The power of desktop software with the flexibility of Web-based e-mail
  • A way to get your newsgroups and RSS feeds as easily as you get e-mail
  • The ability to compose, delete, and organize e-mail even when you’re offline
  • A massive 2GB* of online inbox storage
  • Address AutoComplete and other handy features to let you speed through your e-mail like never before
  • The power to instantly add an MSN Spaces blog entry about any message
  • Keep in touch with your MSN Messenger contacts right from inside the program
  • Easy creation and editing of photo e-mails

Paul Thurrott has put together a quick screenshot gallery for those people wondering what it is all about but don’t want to download it.

Microsoft Releases An Office 2007 Video Demonstration

Microsoft has put together a very informative movie on the new Office 2007 that is supposed to be released in January 2007. They have many key points that they cover to help new users familiarize themselves before even receiving the software. Some of these key points are the Office Menu, the Ribbon, and the Contextual Tabs. The movie is not something that they just slapped together, instead it is something that you could show your employees or your family so that they know what they can expect in the future version of Office. This definitely beats the screenshots on the Web! Nice one Microsoft!
