Avast! Antivirus Now Available For Windows Vista RC1

This article was written on September 08, 2006 by CyberNet.

Avast! Shield Logo Yay! It is finally here. A Vista RC1 compatible version of the Avast! Antivirus. I just got done uninstalling AVG and I now have Avast 4.7.881 Beta up and running. It looks pretty good so far. Here are the available download links:

After you install and run Avast! for the first time you will receive a compatibility warning, but you can ignore it…the team is working with Microsoft to fix that issue. I also checked the “don’t show me this again” box so that I wouldn’t have to worry about seeing the warning every time I start Windows.

ATI has also updated their video card drivers which is important for you to use if you want the best visual experience possible. I didn’t notice much of a difference from what Vista had automatically installed but I am sure it would affect any gamers out there (I’m not really into gaming).

Mozilla Messaging Releases Snowl Prototype

This article was written on August 07, 2008 by CyberNet.

Mozilla is apparently not going to sit on the sidelines while browsers such as Flock get all of the social fanfare. Instead they are trying to develop a way to integrate Web 2.0 services such as Twitter, Facebook, Google Talk, and more into a central location that makes following your friends easy. Huh, sounds like exactly what the Flock browser is for.

Snowl (download) is the name for Mozilla’s project, and it ships in the form of a Firefox extension. Once you get it installed you’ll be able to enter in the address of RSS feeds, provide your Twitter credentials, or import an OPML file containing a list of feeds.

snowl twitter-1.png

After you get it all setup you’ll want to pull up the View menu in Firefox. From there you can show the Message List, which is simply a listing of your feeds in a classic three-pane fashion:

snowl normal view.png

Any RSS feeds for blogs or websites will appear at the top of the list, while people you’re following (currently only available with your Twitter account) will appear at the bottom.

Also in the View menu you’ll see an option for a River of Messages. This is a two-pane interface that makes it possible to scroll through all of your messages without needing to click on any of them. Normally when I’ve used these kind of layouts in the past the scrolling is always done vertically, but for some odd reason this one is horizontal:

snowl river of news.png

I’m extremely disappointed with how the extension handles itself, but I guess I’ll cut them some slack since this is still a very early prototype. Snowl, in its current state, can’t hold a candle to how well the Flock browser has integrated the social web. Here are some of the reasons I’m not impressed:

  • The interface is very rough around the edges. For example, the vertical divider in the River of Messages view covers the text as you scroll horizontally. This particular view still needs a lot of work.
  • Aren’t designers always taught to minimize the horizontal scrolling? Why is it then that they’ve decided to implement their River of Messages view horizontally rather than vertically like other feed readers.
  • Tighter integration with web services is needed. I shouldn’t have to go to the settings in order to setup my Twitter account. The extension should recognize when I’m on Twitter’s site, and ask whether I want my account associated with Snowl. And providing my Twitter credentials only lets me read messages from friends… I can’t even respond to them from the extension?
  • Better sidebar functionality is a must. I can’t tell which feeds have unread items, can’t group them into folders, or anything like that.

Maybe I’m being overly hard on Mozilla since this is still early in development, but I hardly think it’s usable in its current state. They should have held off a bit more, and polished the extension up a bit. It just feels like Mozilla is trying to play catch-up with Flock now, and is losing big time.

Launchy 2.0 Review & Screenshots

This article was written on October 08, 2007 by CyberNet.

Launchy 2 Alpha

Launchy is one of the best application launchers available, and it is about to get a lot better with version 2 that is right around the corner. Just today Launchy 2.0 Alpha 8 was quietly released in the Launchy forum, and I’ve been using previous Alpha’s for over a week. Despite being early in the development process it is incredibly stable.

So what’s new? I’ve found the biggest thing to be the revamped Options dialog, which I’ve included screenshots of below. Aside from that the whole program has been rewritten in a programming language called QT, and I think there are a lot of rewards for making the switch from MFC. Overall the Launchy 2.0 Alpha interface seems more responsive than the older stable versions.

–New Features–

  • Fade in and fade out special effects
  • User adjustable opaqueness and fade times
  • Adjustable dropdown length
  • Completes folders (e.g. my documents) into paths
  • Can now edit directories by double clicking them
  • Can use environment variables in directories (e.g. %USERPROFILE%)
  • Skin selection now shows previews of skins
  • No longer have to restart Launchy to use a new plugin or skin
  • Plugin options are integrated into the options dialog
  • Launchy can automatically hide when it loses focus
  • Launchy can now shallow scan a directory (customizable depth)
  • Launchy index/options/exit now work, try typing “launchy” tab “options”
  • Much better plugin customization

–Options–

The best thing that has happened to this version of Launchy is the unified Options screen. Everything is now placed in a nice tabbed interface instead of having several different windows for skins, plugins, and settings (click thumbnail for fullsize version):

UniveRSS: Microsoft’s 3D RSS Reader For Vista (Open Source)

This article was written on December 04, 2006 by CyberNet.

Microsoft is really trying to show off what Vista is capable of doing graphically by creating their own application that uses the Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF). The program that they have created is a 3D way for you to view your RSS feeds and is called UniveRSS (took me a minute but then I realized the name is like “universe”). Here is a brief overview of how the feed reader works:

It introduces a full-screen 3D universe where galaxies represent the folders of your RSS feed directory, and the stars are represented by the spinning cubes that hold the feed information. Size and position of the feed cubes indicate how many unread items they contain.

You navigate through the feed galaxies in a game-like environment, freely moving in all three dimensions. Selecting items in lists will turn the cube to the next side displaying the item’s content including images. Just click the right mouse buttons and you turn back to the list view or to the galaxy.

UniveRSS is a showcase application that demonstrates the use of several WPF features, 3D animations, data binding, and data visualization. Currently UniveRSS uses the RSS Feed Store managed through Internet Explorer 7. Later versions will allow you to manage the Feed Store from within the UniveRSS application.

Two things came to my mind when I saw this and the first thing was the system requirements. I looked and it requires Vista running with a compatible WDDM graphics driver which means it won’t work on my laptop (but should do fine on my desktop). The second thing that popped into my head was how useful this would really be. Sure it looks cool but there is no way that I could navigate through my 1,000′s of feed posts that I receive every hour by shuffling through cubes. This is obviously meant for the casual RSS subscriber.

Not only that but if you want to use UniveRSS you’ll need to have your feeds stored in Internet Explorer 7. That was the “nail in the coffin” for me not installing the program. They mentioned that future versions will have its own storage system but for right now you’ll have to use IE 7.

So I haven’t tried this myself so I don’t know what the graphics are really like but I can’t imagine that is anything so great that it should require users to have Vista installed with a WDDM driver. In the coming months we may see a knock-off version of this written in OpenGL or something along those lines that works with more than just Windows Vista. ;)

Download Winamp 5.5: New Skin, New Features

This article was written on September 14, 2007 by CyberNet.

Winamp 5.5 Bento Skin

It’s hard to believe that Winamp will be celebrating its 10th anniversary next month, and they plan to do it in style! To mark the occasion they will be releasing Winamp 5.5 on 10/10 at 10:10AM, but a Beta version of the application has already been made available to testers.

Winamp 5.5 has been in the works for over a year, and I have to admit that the new Bento skin (pictured above) is among the best that I’ve ever seen for the media player. What makes this skin more unique is that it’s a single interface instead of being composed of several individual windows. I was a little skeptical of how nice that would be over the standard skin, but I quickly fell in love with Bento.

Here’s a list of the new features in Winamp 5.5:

  • Winamp Bento (SingleUI Skin)
  • Winamp Remote lets you access your media from anywhere via the web
  • Unified File Editor, with Album Art tab (for mp3, m4a, wma, ogg, flac)
  • Album Art window for Winamp Modern skin
  • Global ‘playback thread priority’ setting for decoders
  • Option to not show playlist item number in classic songticker
  • Version History drop-down selector and Search (in About dialog)
  • Multi-channel mp3surround support
  • Tree Options tab in Media Library Preferences
  • 3 pane view options in ‘Add/Edit View’ dialog
  • Smart View Presets
  • Album Art support/pane and retrieval service
  • Toolbar buttons to control view options
  • Winamp Playlist Generator (powered by Gracenote MusicID)
  • New fields, configurable filter panes & columns, 3 pane view
  • Album Art view & support for iPod and P4S Devices
  • Separate view for video files

That’s not even the half of what’s changed since the last stable version. The list goes on and on with dozens of bug fixes and enhancements all of which will make your Winamp experience that much better.

Original Winamp 0.2 And in case you’ve forgotten what started it all we thought it was time to open the vault to Winamp 0.2 (pictured to the right), which was released back in 1997. Here’s what Wikipedia had to say about that fine release:

Its windowless menubar-only interface showed only play(open), stop, pause, and unpause functions. A file specified on the command line or dropped onto its icon would be played.

The acronym "AMP" stood for "Advanced Multimedia Products".

Vista Transformation Pack 6 RC1 Released

This article was written on November 24, 2006 by CyberNet.

Vista Transformation Pack

The next version of the Vista Transformation Pack (VTP) should be coming up in the next month or so but testing is now underway. If you haven’t used the VTP on your XP machine then you are surely missing out. Once installed it will make XP  look like Windows Vista by applying a transparency to the border of the windows as well a skin that is unbelievably similar to what is included with Vista.

One thing that everyone always complains about with the VTP is that it has problems uninstalling and returning your PC to the previous state (icon restoration is the biggest problem I hear about). With that being said the new VTP 6 RC1 is a test release and isn’t exactly something that I would install on my primary system, but that is my personal preference.

You can view the full changelog and join in a discussion about VTP 6 at JCXP.net. Reading through some of the posts that are already there show that there have been some problems with the installation but the developer has already fixed that problem. If you are feeling like your PC needs a change then go ahead and give it a whirl.

Windows Live Local Virtual Earth Gives You A Cars View

Windows Live Local Virtual Earth Gives You A Cars View

We have all seen the bird’s eye view perspective that some mapping applications have, but have you ever see mapping software that will actually show you what it is like while you are driving? This is definitely a first for me and surprising it was Microsoft that has brought it to us and not Google.

The image above was actually taken when I was ‘walking’ through the San Francisco, California area. Currently, the only two cities that have been imaged are San Francisco, California and Seattle, Washington. The only difference between the walking mode and driving modes is that each has a different skin that is applied to the window. I like the walking mode the best because it is a cleaner interface.

Overall I am very impressed with this feature and it must have taken quite some time for them to complete. They appear to have been driving around with four different cameras attached to the top of a vehicle that was constantly taking pictures. The Web interface was designed to always show you what the view would be in front of you, to the right of you, and to the left of you. The image above was cropped to fit this site so you don’t get the full effects of the different views.

Microsoft did a really nice job on this and it is something that you really have to experience for yourself. Check it out by following the link below.

Download Google Earth 4 Beta Version

Alright, Google continues to be on a roll with the release of Google Earth 4 Beta (of course it is Beta). There are a variety of enhancements that you will see while using the new version. Some of these new features include a new user interface, integrated SketchUp designs, and some KML improvements.

I would say that the biggest thing is that there are Mac and Linux versions now available! The Mac version is a universal binary which will definitely expand the Mac user base for Google Earth. I knew the Linux version was in the making but I wasn’t expecting a release so soon, especially a completely new version!

Opera 9.20 Sporting Some Developer Tools, Too

This article was written on February 02, 2007 by CyberNet.

The Opera Desktop Team just announced a new experimental build of the desktop version of the Opera browser. The version that they are currently working on is 9.2 and when released it will have a few new features, including a usage report collection as mentioned a few weeks ago.

The new feature this week is a set of developer tools that will open in a pop-up window for the website that you are currently viewing. I tried it on our site to see how well it works and it is nicely laid out to help developers quickly troubleshoot problems. Here is a screenshot of what it looks like:

Opera Developer Tools

I briefly used this tool and it would undoubtedly help to troubleshoot layout problems with Opera, but it isn’t anything extravagant especially after having used the Firebug extension for Firefox. The Opera Developer Tool is just a JavaScript pop-up window with a tabbed interface, so it also doesn’t integrate very well into the browser like I would have expected from Opera. This is just a pre-release version so I can’t be too quick to judge, but I would have expected this to be something located in the sidebar (or at least an option to dock it). Using Opera’s built-in cascading/tiling capabilities you could always make it act like a sidebar though:

Opera Developer Tools

For my primary development tool I’m going to stick with Firebug right now because it seems to be more powerful and feature-packed. However, when designing sites I always ensure that they fully function with Opera and if I end up running into any problems this will definitely help. Thanks to the Opera Team for the nice addition!

Download the latest Opera weekly build to see this for yourself.
