New Ubuntu 8.10 Theme Has Even More Brown

This article was written on June 30, 2008 by CyberNet.

One of the the most frequent comments I hear from new Ubuntu users is that the default theme for the operating system is a tad too brown. I kind of like the current Ubuntu theme, but it was supposed to get an overhaul with the last release. The new default theme has got pushed back to Ubuntu 8.10, and we’re getting our first glimpse of the new theme now that Ubuntu 8.10 Alpha 1 has shipped. The verdict: it’s even more brown!

To show you what I mean here’s a screenshot that PhoroLinux provided showcasing OpenOffice.org fully skinned by the new theme:

What do you think? There is always the option to go back to the lighter Ubuntu theme, but I find it interesting that they might be shipping Ubuntu 8.10 with an overall dark theme. Personally the dark theme is not at all something I would use, and I was hoping for a theme more along the lines of this mockup.

We’ll keep an eye on the progress of the new theme, and we should have a better idea what will ship with Ubuntu 8.10 as we get closer to the October 2008 launch.

Download Microsoft’s New Windows Live Writer

This article was written on August 13, 2006 by CyberNet.

I am testing out Microsoft’s new Windows Live Writer right now while I am writing this post. The initial setup took just a minute to do and it looks like this might be a keeper! The Web Preview mode is priceless because it will show you a preview of what your post will look like on your homepage — including all of your sidebars.

I have noticed a few things that I don’t like though but could probably be fixed by a plug-in (yes, it has the ability to use plug-ins). The first thing that I hate is the lacking of an image uploader. When inserting an image you can choose a local file or enter in the URL of the image you want to insert. The one other thing that irritates me is that it does not support categories and sub-categories very well. It will display all of the categories that are available but will not organize them in the normal fashion:

Category
– Sub-Category 1
– Sub-Category 2

Oh yeah, and to ease your worries a little the HTML code that it generates is nowhere near the mess that Microsoft Word is notorious for. It is clean, simple, and easy to manually edit.

Windows Live Writer wasn’t expected to be available until tomorrow but we all love getting software early. If you are looking for some nice blogging software then this is something you might like. I can’t wait until people start to develop plug-ins because it will only make Windows Live Writer better.

It Is Time To Get Your Flock On!

This article was written on June 13, 2006 by CyberNet.

It Is Time To Get Your Flock On!

Flock has released the Beta version of their Firefox-based Web browser. Flock is based off of Firefox and there are many Firefox extensions that have been made compatible with Flock. The greatest thing about Flock is that they have went above and beyond to extend the features of Firefox without the need for extensions.

Bookmarking is made simple because they have integration with social bookmarking sites Del.icio.us and Shadows. This makes it simpler for people to access their bookmarks no matter where you are.

Bloggers will also find this new browser quite useful because of the built-in blogging features. Image uploads can be done using two of the currently supported free photo sites: Photobucket and Flickr.

And for the grand finale…a built-in RSS reader. This is a great idea and I always thought that I had wanted a web browser that had a built-in RSS reader. I realized that I didn’t want it when I used Opera 9 for awhile. It got frustrating when I was on other computers and didn’t have access to my feeds.

Flock is getting a lot of attention with this release. Just like how Google teamed up with Firefox it looks like Yahoo is teaming up with Flock. Don’t worry, you can change your default search to the search engine that you desire!

Remember, this is only Beta software so it might not run as smooth as you would like it to. However, I am sure they will be ironing out the kinks with their $10 million in financing that they reportedly received from Shasta Ventures.

More Windows 7 Screenshots

This article was written on February 14, 2008 by CyberNet.

A few different people have posted screenshots of Windows 7 Milestone 1, which is a very early look at what’s supposed to be released in 2009 or 2010. The last time we saw screenshots of Windows 7 Milestone 1 there wasn’t really anything that exciting, but a Russian site (English translation by Google) has really busted the lid off of any mysteries.

Aside from the article that was written there are also two screenshot galleries that accompany it (here and here). From the article and the two galleries here are the things that we found interesting:

  • After you first setup the computer with Windows 7 you’ll be able to establish a “HomeGroup.” Sounds similar to a Workgroup, but I guess this is yet another step that Microsoft is taking in making networking an easy process for anyone that uses a computer.

  • The Status Bar, as we already knew, expands hidden icons in a popup window to conserve the precious Taskbar space.
    Windows 7 Status Bar
  • The search box in Windows Explorer is now resizable, which I’m surprised to see.
    Windows 7 Search Box
  • The Start Menu now makes it a bit easier to pin items that you use the most:

  • The size of the Control Panel icons can be adjusted for those that like things a bit smaller:
    Windows 7 Control Panel
  • In just a few clicks you’ll be able to restore Windows back to the original state. It would be cool if this feature didn’t include the bloated software that the manufacturers typically bundle with Windows, but that’s doubtful.
    Windows 7 Wipe Restore
  • One of the features that I want right now in Vista is the full-width Start Menu searching (I trimmed out the middle of the screenshot to eliminate the abundance of whitespace). Super sweet!
    Windows 7 Start Search

After looking at the screenshots in the article and the gallery I have to say that there is a lot more new stuff in Windows 7 Milestone 1 than I had expected. Microsoft still has about a year to develop new features and improve usability before they need to start focusing on polishing the operating system and squashing bugs. Well, that’s if they want to make the projected release date of 2009.

We’ll keep you informed when more Windows 7 news becomes available, but I have a feeling that the first milestone has been milked for everything it’s worth.

Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 Build 5335 Released Today

This article was written on March 20, 2006 by CyberNet.

Microsoft Updates Internet Explorer 7 Today

Microsoft just a short while ago updated Internet Explorer 7 and it is titled “Internet Explorer 7 Beta 2 Preview”. The build number is 5335 and the most recent build available until now was 5299. I am sure there are just a bunch of minor fixes in this build and it weighs in at 11.2MB! Jump over and get it if you are an Internet Explorer fan otherwise you can hang out and wait for the official release of Firefox 2 Alpha 1 tomorrow.

Also, if you already have IE7 installed then you will be forced to uninstall it before you can install this version. If you go to the Add/Remove Programs in your Control Panel to uninstall it then make sure you to check the box that says “Show Updates” otherwise you will never see the IE7 option to uninstall.

For those people not running a genuine copy of Windows then you might be able to use these instructions to install this build. I did not test it with those instructions so once someone has tested it then please post here letting us know if it works.

Microsoft Releasing Plans For Windows Defender Beta 2

Microsoft has changed the name of Microsoft AntiSpyware to Windows Defender, as many of you know. However, they have not released a version that has Windows Defender branded to the program. It should be coming around the February or March time frame. The biggest change is that Windows Defender Beta 2 will be able to run on Windows 2000, XP, 2003, R2, Vista, and LH server. They are even going to be releasing a 64-bit version of Windows Defender. Windows Defender Beta 2 has been in beta testing by Microsoft Employees since the beginning of December and there have been some good words spoken about it. I can’t wait to see it and test it myself!

iPad 2 mockup teases 128GB storage, exhibits speaker grille we’ve seen before

Apple itself might not be at CES, but the prospective upgrade of its iPad to version two has accessory manufacturers (or at least manufacturers’ imaginations) working overtime. We’ve just come across our second iPad 2 mockup, this one a lot more comprehensive than the first, which seems to mesh well with some earlier imagery we’ve seen of the supposed next-gen Apple tablet. Not only that, its rear label reveals an A1337 product code — one that’s also shared by the current iPad WiFi + 3G — and lists 128GB of onboard storage, two times the current tablet’s maximum. We don’t know what material it’s made out of, but it felt felt the same as the current iPad’s aluminum shell. All that said, this is still just a mockup from a no-name accessory maker and we’re just as willing to believe it was put together on the basis of some decent rumor research as we are to think that it really is the iPad 2. No harm in browsing some pictures of this 9.4mm-thick device, though eh?

New Google Earth 4.1 Beta Available

This article was written on May 09, 2007 by CyberNet.

Google Earth 4.1

Google Earth 4.1 Beta is now available for everyone to download. As of right now there is no information posted on what’s new in version 4.1, but both the Ogle Earth and Google Earth blogs have shed some light on new features that they have found:

  • The SpaceNavigator by 3DConnexion now supports the Mac version of Google Earth. According to the Google Store: “SpaceNavigator is compatible with greater than 100 popular 3D applications as well as Windows XP, Vista, Linux and Mac OS X.”
  • A new “Tips of the Day” screen appears when you start Google Earth. This will make it easier for newcomers to learn about all of the features that Google Earth offers.

  • Open the current view in Google Maps! This is a feature that has been long overdue for Google Earth, but now in the click of a button you can now open the area you’re currently viewing in Google Maps.

This build is pretty new since it was just compiled on May 6, 2007. Google will probably mention more about the new version in the next day or so, and if we find anything else out we’ll add it to this list. If you notice something new that we didn’t mention let us know so that we can add it to the list.

Some people are having troubles downloading the new Beta when visiting the Google Earth download page, which might still serve up the older version. To help those people out this is the direct link to the Windows download via Google’s servers, and this is a mirror of that same file that I uploaded myself.

Open/Save OpenOffice.org Files In Microsoft Office

This article was written on October 09, 2006 by CyberNet.

Office 2007 ODF

Many of you probably aren’t aware that Microsoft has been working on an Open Document Format (ODF) Converter for Office 2007, 2003, and XP. It will essentially allow you to import files in the Open Document Format and export them as needed.

The current release is now compatible with the Office 2007 Beta 2 Technical Refresh. Once installed it will add a menu item which can be seen in the screenshot that I took above. It appears that they currently disabled the saving capabilities so right now you can only open documents, but that is still nice.

I tested it on a 380-page OpenOffice.org Writer document that had all kinds of different formatting and it seemed to do a decent job. The conversion process took about 4-minutes and it immediately saved the file to Microsoft’s DOCX filetype. From there I can edit it at my leisure and eventually I will be able to export the document back to the ODF. Unfortunately it is not like other formats where you can open it and edit the file without having to convert it to a completely different file format.

Download the ODF Add-in for Word 2003
Download the ODF Add-in for Word XP

At this time there are only add-ins available for Microsoft Word but they do have plans to make similar ones for PowerPoint and Excel. The final Word add-in is scheduled for release on December 30, 2006 and the other add-ins should make their way out in early 2007.
