Mozilla’s Progress on Platform-Specific Themes

We’ve known about Mozilla’s plans to provide platform specific themes to users in Firefox 3, and it looks as though some glimpses of what the future holds is now in our hands. Those of you on a Mac and testing out Firefox 3 nightlies are able to install an extension dubbed as Proto for Mac OS X. Once installed you’ll be able to see all of the eye candy that’s pictured above.

Proto is an official add-on that’s currently being offered as an easy way for people to checkout the new theme. The latest version was just released today, and sports a new look for the add-ons window, revamped find bar, better downloads window, and more.

Don’t worry, they haven’t forgotten about the Linux users either. An article written last week demonstrates how the appearance of Firefox 3 is changing for Linux users:

And then there are also supposed to be separate Windows XP and Vista themes in the works which will use the icons that we’ve already seen. It will be interesting to see just how much the two different operating systems differ from each other, but as of right now there’s no word on when they plan to have the Windows theme integrated.

There’s still no mention of the next Firefox 3 milestone, but we’ll keep our eyes open.

30Boxes.com Provides An Easy-To-Use Online Calendar

Many people use Microsoft Outlook religiously, but sometimes it is difficult to share your calendar with the rest of the family. Now, there is an online solution thanks to the makers of 30Boxes.com! After fumbling around with the calendar for a little while I really learned to love it. It has a slick user interface that optimizes the experience you will have. Part of the reason it is so great is because of the similarities to some of the most popular desktop calendar applications.

Many rumors say that 30Boxes.com is going to be as popular as GMail is for email, and 30Boxes.com is currently in Beta so we may have a little while to see what its true possibilities are!

Microsoft Lets Users Test Drive Office 2007 Online

Microsoft Lets Users Test Drive Office 2007 Online

If you don’t want to download and install the free Microsoft Office 2007 Beta 2 then you can take it for a test drive online. Microsoft has setup a complete simulation environment that lets you completely test each of their Office 2007 products:

  • Microsoft Office Access 2007
  • Microsoft Office Excel 2007
  • Microsoft Office InfoPath 2007
  • Microsoft Office OneNote 2007
  • Microsoft Office Outlook 2007
  • Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 with Business Contact Manager
  • Microsoft Office Outlook Web Access
  • Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2007
  • Microsoft Office Project Professional 2007
  • Microsoft Office Publisher 2007
  • Microsoft Office SharePoint Designer 2007
  • Microsoft Office Visio 2007
  • Microsoft Office Word 2007
  • Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services
  • Microsoft Office Project Server 2007 (should be available soon)
  • Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007

The testing environment is currently very busy and you will probably have to wait in line if you want to give it a shot. There was no wait time when I accessed it the first time but when I went back it was a 17 minute delay. I am sure that the service will continue to get busy as more and more people find out about this, so go and “stand” in line now if you want to try it! Oh yeah, it requires Internet Explorer (surprise surprise) since it has to install an ActiveX plug-in.

Thanks Jason!

LG Optimus 2X looks like a dual-core Star, shows off HDMI-out while embarrassing the Galaxy S on video

LG has, in the most casual fashion possible, revealed the name of a new smartphone it intends to launch in the Korean market: the Optimus 2X. That brand name was buried deep in a release yesterday about exclusive Ennio Morricone content bundled with the Optimus Mach, though some studious folks have unearthed it and subsequently found YouTube content showing off the handset. Codenamed the SU660, the 2X looks almost identical to the LG Star we handled for ourselves recently, with the only differences being in product code (the Star was dubbed P990) and the button array at the bottom. Looking at the videos after the break, most of the onboard content bears LG’s local branding of Cyon, leading us to suspect the 660 is just the Korean variant of the Star. Either way, that LG presser also notes that the Optimus 2X should be launching within the next couple of months — just in time to take the Nexus S down a notch or two, eh LG?

Download EasyPHP 2.0 Beta 1 to Setup a Windows Website Server

This article was written on December 23, 2006 by CyberNet.

EasyPHP 2 Setting up your own Web server can be a pain when trying to install PHP, MySQL, Apache, and phpMyAdmin. There are several different applications available that try to make doing this easy by installing all of the above for you, and my favorite has always been EasyPHP. I’ve tried others but EasyPHP is just so, well, easy. :)

The only thing that I never liked about it is that they don’t update it very frequently. It has been nearly 2 years since the last version was released and within that time there have been significant updates to all of the included programs. Luckily they have been working on a new version and we should see it available soon, but if you can’t wait any longer to get your Windows server setup in a matter of minutes (with the latest software) then they have posted a Beta version.

Here are the version numbers of each application that is included:

  • Apache 2.2.3
  • PHP 5.2.0
  • MySQL 5.0.27
  • phpMyAdmin 2.9.1.1
  • SQLiteManager 1.2.0

If you’re still a little skeptical about how easy it is to install this just checkout their installation guide. Note: Most of the website is in French so you may have to use their translation buttons at the top in order to have the page translated into your language.

So now you don’t have any excuse why you can’t post your holiday pictures on a nice website for your family to see. ;)

FastAero: Vista-like Transparency (with Blurring) on XP

This article was written on May 24, 2007 by CyberNet.

When we mentioned the Vystal software a month ago I was pretty excited. It was the first solution to come forward which offered Vista-like visual effects in Windows XP. Now there is another one called FastAero (Download Mirror) which hopes to do the same kind of thing, but it looks much more promising.

On FastAero’s homepage you’ll find several downloads available, with the latest claiming to be pretty unstable. I decided to give build 0510 a go (Download Mirror) on my only remaining XP machine, and getting it to run couldn’t have been much simpler since you don’t have to install it.

Unfortunately it didn’t work quite right probably because my graphics card in this machine isn’t the greatest, but I was still able to see the blurring effects in action. There were no borders to the windows though, so I took the liberty of outlining the borders in red so that they were a little easier to see:

I tried multiple versions of FastAero, and the latest one was the best. None of them put the minimize, maximize, and close buttons on the top toolbar for me though. If you do get it to work properly it would look something like this:

FastAero

I recommend trying it out just for giggles if for nothing else. A new version is expected next month that takes advantage of the Mirror Driver. This will mean that a direct link can be made between the video driver memory and FastAero, effectively bypassing the CPU for much of the processing.

After you get done trying it out leave a comment letting us know how well it worked.

Note: This will not “skin” windows that you currently have open, instead it will only skin windows that are opened after enabling FastAero. And after closing FastAero, it will automatically restore the normal Windows XP borders so there should be no concern with it screwing up the appearance of your operating system.

LG Star preview

The LG Star. The dual-core beast from the east that was once a mere twinkle in our eye has managed to find its way to the Engadget mansions, having been lent to us by a very generous (and very anonymous) tipster. It’s clearly a test device, as evidenced by its diagnostics menus and lack of a lockscreen, but there’s no disguising the power that lies within it. We put the Star through a battery of common Android benchmarks and the results were, in a word, outstanding. Basically, Tegra 2 will give anything your current phone‘s running an inferiority complex. Join us after the break as we delve deeper into this upcoming powerhouse of a handset from LG. One thing’s for sure: CES 2011 can’t come soon enough.

Adobe Lightroom Beta 3 Available For Windows & Mac

Adobe has released Adobe Lightroom Beta 3 to Windows and Mac users alike. The goal of Lightroom is to give professional photographers a way to easily manage and edit their photos. The software really targets those people who use an uncompressed image format (RAW) instead of the common JPEG compression. By using a RAW image format you are able to adjust details of the exposure and contrast to precisely match what you would like it to.

While Lightroom really seems great for some purposes I don’t believe that it is meant for everyone. It will be interesting to see how well this software ends up taking off.

NOTE: You will have to register with Adobe if you plan on downloading the software.

Thanks for the tip James!
