Use Office 2007 As Your Blogging Software

It looks like Microsoft Office 2007 Beta 2 will allow users to create posts for their blogs. You will be able to upload your post directly for Microsoft Word and you will also be able to upload your photos. At this point you should not expect these features to be flawless because they just started to work on them. Here are some known issues that have been found so far:

Did I mention that this was beta software and we were running hot? For complete transparency I need to admit a couple things. I had to make a few hand tweaks to my post due to bugs (I’m sure our developer would blame it on user error). I had to upload and hand code the pictures because I had problems with my FTP site. And, I had to hand change the items with the CODE tag since we didn’t map the Word code style correctly. You too can help find a report bugs with this feature once beta 2 is available.

I hope to see this and other new features in the Beta 2 release of Microsoft Office 2007. Hopefully they have been working on other features besides those that only benefit bloggers.

Opera Link – Access your Bookmarks Anywhere

This article was written on October 25, 2007 by CyberNet.

Opera Link

It’s no surprise that Opera 9.5 can synchronize your bookmarks with an online server, and can therefore give you access to them anywhere when running Opera 9.5! That is one of Opera 9.5′s most notable features, and the development team just stepped up their game by launching what’s called Opera Link.

With Opera Link you can access your bookmarks and Speed Dial entries from wherever you are via the link.opera.com site. Once logged in you should see an interface similar to that above, where you can add or remove bookmarks. You can’t move bookmarks between folders, or rearrange the folders for that matter, but that might be something they will work on in the future.

From the Opera Link site you can also view all of your Speed Dial entries, and it appears that they will eventually show small thumbnails of each. Right now I just get a “No screenshot available” message for each of my Speed Dial bookmarks.

And Opera didn’t stop there. They realize how popular their Opera Mini browser is becoming, and so they thought that it would be even more convenient if people could manage their bookmarks with that! Hence you can use Opera Mini 4 Beta to synchronize your bookmarks as well.

Jon von Tetzchner, Opera’s CEO, said:

We refuse to believe people should compromise their experience when they access the Web from different devices. With Opera Link, we give them a consistent experience uniquely suited to the way they want to use the Web. But as cool as we think Opera Link is now, we are already hard at work making it even more valuable to our users in the future. Opera Link means convergence without compromise.

I think the only thing that Opera Link is missing right now is direct support for the Nintendo Wii browser, and I’m not sure if they have plans to integrate it with that in the future. I’m just grateful for the multiple methods they’ve already implemented with Opera Link.

Instructions for setting up Opera Link on both Opera 9.5 Beta and Opera Mini 4 Beta can be found here.

Magical Jelly Bean Key Finder Works for Vista and Office 2007

This article was written on April 13, 2007 by CyberNet.

If you have forgot to write down your product key from Microsoft Office or Windows then all may not be lost. We have previously mentioned the wonderful Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder application that is capable of retrieving your product key from already installed software, but a newer Beta version is in the works and it does even more!

Keyfinder

For starters this is the first version to support key retrieval for both Vista and Office 2007. The software previously supported Vista but it wasn’t able to retrieve your key for Office 2007. That bumps up the list of compatible Microsoft applications to Windows 95, 98, ME, 2000, XP, Server 2003, Windows Vista, Office XP, Office 2003, and Office 2007.

There is also another new feature that will definitely make this tool even more valuable than it already is. That is the addition of the keyfinder.cfg file which stores registry locations for other applications that save the product key in the registry. By default this file adds the capability of Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder to recognize keys from any of the following programs (and could easily be expanded later on):

  • 3DMark
  • Adobe Photoshop 7
  • After Effects 7
  • Alcohol 120%
  • Axailis IconWorkshop
  • Beyond TV
  • Beyond Media
  • Borland Delphi 6
  • Call of Duty 2
  • Company of Heroes
  • Cyberlink PowerDVD
  • DVD Profiler
  • HDD State Inspector
  • mIRC
  • Naturally Speaking 8
  • Norton PartitionMagic 8
  • O&O CleverCache 6
  • O&O Defrag 8
  • O&O DriveLED 2
  • Quake 4
  • Replay Converter
  • Splinter Cell
  • Stardock
  • SuperCleaner
  • Techsmith Camtasia
  • Techsmith SnagIt
  • TGTSoft StyleXP
  • TuneUP
  • Unreal Tournament 2004
  • VMware Workstation 5
  • VSO Convert X to DVD
  • Westwood Alarmstufe Rot 2
  • Westwood Tiberian Sun
  • Winamp 5
  • WinPatrol
  • WS FTP

Not only that but the Keyfinder can also change your Windows key should the need ever arise. All you have to do is enter in your new key as well as any registration information that you want to change:

Keyfinder

The author of this application had done a really great job rewriting this program from scratch. The best part is that Keyfinder does not require any installation, so you can throw it on your USB drive and use it whenever it is needed.

Register For ReplayTV Beta By Wednesday

It was back in December when we found out that the ReplayTV was going to switch from set-top boxes to the PC. This news shocked everyone but now they are looking for Beta testers. If you are interested in participating in the Beta program then you need to fill out a 40-question survey before Wednesday (tomorrow). They do have some requirements for those people looking to test:

Beta Tester Requirements: Those selected to test will be required to:

  • Start testing the end of June 2006
  • Sign the ReplayTV Beta Agreement
  • Participate in online beta forums and answer weekly surveys
  • Provide data files or logs when requested
  • Download the beta releases at the tester website
  • Submit bug reports at the tester website
  • Complete specific testing tasks through September 2006

We will be tracking beta participation. Your ongoing participation is conditioned on meeting the testing obligations.

They really want to get feedback on the new software so this isn’t for just any casual tester. Also, by completing the survey you are not guaranteed that you will be selected as a tester.

Apple.com reveals iLife upgrade, reaffirms MacBook Air refresh

Ah, it’s good to see Apple can leak its announcements ahead of time just like the rest of the world. Overzealous forum mods on Apple’s own site have been setting up Discussions sections for products to be announced at today’s Back to the Mac event a little early, which has inevitably been picked up by some sleuthing souls over in Poland. A little bit of URL manipulation has revealed separate forums for a new iMovie ’11, iPhoto ’11, and GarageBand ’11, all three of which are core components of the iLife suite, leading us to go ahead and presume that Steve Jobs will be discussing an iLife ’11 later today. There’s also confirmation of the new MacBook Air with an “MBA (Need official name)” forum emerging, alongside a mysterious “Reserved 20 10” destination.

[Thanks, MM]

Thunderbird 2 Nearing Completion…No Tabs?

This article was written on March 13, 2007 by CyberNet.

I haven’t been able to find an official release date for Mozilla Thunderbird 2, but it is definitely coming up. They are moving into the release candidate (RC) stage and from that I would guess that a release is due within a month or so. Thunderbird 1.5 had two release candidates before its final release in January 2006, which covered nearly two months in time. Thunderbird 2, however, is looking very stable so it wouldn’t surprise me to see just the one RC being made available.

Thunderbird 2

There is also a draft of the release notes available to be sure that everything is ready to go when the big day comes. We were all excited to think that there was a possibility of a tabbed interface making it into Thunderbird 2, but there is no mention of it in the What’s New list:

  • Message Tags: Create your own tags for organizing email. Messages can be assigned any number of tags. Tags can be combined with saved searches and mail views to make it easier to organize email.
  • Visual Theme: Thunderbird 2′s theme and user interface have been updated to improve usability.
  • Session History Navigation: Back and Forward buttons allow navigation through message history.
  • Folder Views: Customize the folder pane to show favorite, unread or recent folders.
  • Easy Access to Popular Web Mail Services: Gmail and .Mac users can access their accounts in Thunderbird by simply providing their user names and passwords.
  • Improved Support For Extensions: Extensions can now add custom columns to the message list pane in addition to storing custom message data in the mail database.
  • Improved New Mail Notification Alerts: New mail alerts include information such as the subject, sender and message preview text.
  • Folder Summary Popups: Mouse over a folder with new messages to see a summary of the new messages in that folder.
  • Saved Search Folder Performance: Search results for saved search folders are now cached, improving folder loading performance.
  • Find As You Type
  • Improved Filing Tools: Recent folder menu items for moving and copying messages to recently used folders. Move / Copy again functionality.
  • Updates to the extension system: The extension system has been updated to provide enhanced security and to allow for easier localization of extensions.
  • New Windows installer: Based on Nullsoft Scriptable Install System, the new Windows installer resolves many long-standing issues.
  • Windows Vista Support
  • MacOS X Universal Binaries

I didn’t think there was any chance of tabs making it into the final release once the last beta was posted, but I was still optimistic. I guess it always gives us something to look forward to for Thunderbird 3 which is slated for release in Quarter 1 of 2008. Of course, that date can change at anytime since Thunderbird 2 was supposed to ship the summer of 2006 and Thunderbird 3 was supposed to be early 2007…that didn’t exactly happen though.

In an email dpotts pointed out that the Thunderbird start page (pictured above behind the About Thunderbird window) also got a few new options on it. It’s not a major change, but they did add the read/write messages. Windows Vista support wasn’t on the list before so they may have focused on that as well, but other than that I don’t think much has been added since the last pre-release version.

Windows 7 Demo Not too Exciting

This article was written on May 28, 2008 by CyberNet.

Last night at the D6 conference both Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer sat down together for an interview. We’ve got two highlight videos from the conference below, and there were actually some interesting things brought up. What’s even more surprising is that there were some jokes being thrown around.

Before we get into that we wanted to bring some attention to the multi-touch Windows 7 interface that was demoed. Despite being rather tight-lipped on Windows 7 Microsoft decided to show off a glimpse of what’s in store for the future operating system, but it didn’t go any further than the multi-touch capabilities. My question is whether people are actually looking for multi-touch capabilities in a laptop? The Tablet PC market never really seemed to explode like Bill Gates said it would, and I don’t think that on-screen multi-touch laptops are going to do any better. Sure there will be a chunk of the population who will find it useful, but the hardware required will probably fall outside of the price range for general consumers. Take a look at this video demonstration by Microsoft and give us your opinion:

And as you can see in that video there is not a drastically new interface in Windows 7 like those pictured over at Crunchgear. In fact the credibility of their “screenshots” has already been smashed. All of them are clearly mockups (apparently not even done by Microsoft), and some even look like they date back to the Longhorn days.

If you’ve got 12-minutes to kill here are the highlights from the Bill Gates and Steve Jobs interview, and they are worth watching in my opinion. The first video covers their chat about the history of Microsoft, and the second half focuses on current/future developments.

Sign Up For Microsoft TechNet To Get Notified of Beta Releases

Microsoft is finally letting everyone have the ability to get notified when new beta releases of their software have been made available. If you decide to sign up for Microsoft TechNet then you will get notified when Windows Vista Beta 2, Office 2007 Beta 2, and Exchange Server 12 Beta 2 are released. This may not offer you the chance to test it, but at least you can keep up with what is available to testers.

If you haven’t been keeping up on the current news then I will recap for you. The current build of Windows Vista is 5308.60 (if you didn’t hear they released another build just days after the February CTP). Microsoft also recently released a Technical Refresh of Office 2007 to fix compatibilities with Windows Vista. Along with the compatibility fix they also did a slight overhaul of the Office GUI.

HTC Mondrian render teases AT&T U-verse Mobile for Windows Phone 7, looks fatter than last time

Not that the connection between AT&T and HTC’s Mondrian WP7 handset was under much doubt anymore, but here’s the first image purporting to show the carrier-branded version of the device. The render is provided by 911sniper, whose long and distinguished record of leaking legit HTC ROMs leads us to believe it is indeed the real deal. It’s curious then to juxtapose the somewhat bulky Mondrian on show here against the press imagery recently unearthed by BestBoyZ — are we still looking at the same device? Our eyeball geometry would suggest not. Anyway, there’s not too long left to go until Microsoft tidies this alphabet soup of codenames up for us, and until then we suggest just enjoying that tantalizing tile titled AT&T U-verse Mobile.

[Thanks, Kamal]

Ubuntu 8.10 Screenshot Gallery: New Human-Murrine Theme

This article was written on August 14, 2008 by CyberNet.

The last few Alpha releases of Ubuntu 8.10 have been a bit controversial because of the dark brown theme, called NewHuman, that it was shipping by default. Good news for those of you who weren’t too fond of that theme… it’s no longer default in Alpha 4! The NewHuman theme is still included as an option, but a new one called Human-Murrine has taken over the default spot.

I downloaded and installed the new Ubuntu 8.10 Alpha 4 theme so that I can see what it was like first-hand, but after installing the latest Alpha build there was a slight error with the theme. Human-Murrine is supposed to be shipping as the default theme, but for one reason or another it’s not completely enabled after setting up the operating system. It’s a known bug, but in the meantime you can manually select the Human-Murrine theme from System -> Preferences -> Appearance. After that it should look fine.

So what’s up with the new theme? It doesn’t look all that different from the Ubuntu 8.04 theme, but things like the progress bars are a bit more fancy. Here’s a screenshot gallery showing off the new theme:

You’ll notice that the first two screenshots have a messed up title bar because I hadn’t enabled the Human-Murrine theme yet. The remaining six screenshots are all using Human-Murrine. Take note of the redesigned progress bars shown in a few of the screenshots.

What do you think? Are you happy with the new theme or were you expecting something a bit more fancy like what we showed off last time?
