Download ActiveSync 4.5 Beta 2

This article was written on September 20, 2006 by CyberNet.

ActiveSync Microsoft has released ActiveSync 4.5 Beta 2 which boasts better stability and less connectivity problems:

Changes in ActiveSync 4.5 Beta 2 help resolve issues related to setup, partnerships, and connectivity with the PC and Microsoft Exchange. In addition, it includes a troubleshooter utility that scans your computer and device to identify problems and offers information and corrective actions to solve them.

ActiveSync 4.5 Beta 2 supports PC sync via USB cable, Bluetooth, or infrared connection.

I still won’t be making the upgrade because Microsoft removed wireless support after ActiveSync 3.8. It is so much nicer being able to wirelessly connect my Pocket PC and my desktop computer rather than having to wire them up together. I mean come on, everything is going wireless these days and if they were having problems with it they should have figured out a solution instead of scrapping the feature all together. HPC Factor still lets you download ActiveSync 3.8 if you decide you want the wireless feature.

In case you were wondering why exactly the wireless was removed here is what they say:

Remote PC Sync (via WiFi or LAN) has been removed due to Enterprise customer feedback around security issues.

So why not just provide an Enterprise version of ActiveSync that doesn’t have this feature? Sorry, I’m a little bitter over the whole thing if you can’t tell. :)

Weather Watcher 6 Beta – Best Weather App Available

This article was written on April 28, 2008 by CyberNet.

weather watcher beta.jpg

Weather is an important part of our daily lives, and can drastically affect any plans that we have. Lucky for us the Internet is making it easy to stay on top of weather developments as they happen, and the newest Beta of Weather Watcher for Windows lets you do it in style.

Personally I’ve always been a huge fan of this software, and the best part is that it’s completely free! It has a small System Tray icon that will always display the current temperature (as seen in the screenshot above), and the interface continues to get better and better. Weather Watcher 6.0 Beta has once again received a face lift, and it is now showing real-time weather conditions pulled from WeatherBug or NWS. If you’re located outside of the United States the weather reports will be pulled from CustomWeather.

And to help you appreciate the new interface we’ve decided to gather screenshots for a few of the different areas in Weather Watcher. The “new” links point to screenshots from version 6.0 Beta, while the “old” links are from version 5.6 which is the current stable version:

The general layout of the program is still the same, but I think it goes without saying that it’s now a lot easier on the eyes.

If you’ve never used Weather Watcher before I’ll be the first to warn you that it’s easy to get caught up in all of the customization options. There have got to be at least a hundred different options that you can change within this program. So don’t be surprised if you spend 15 or 20 minutes tinkering around with it. ;)

Microsoft To Stop Offering The Office 2007 Downloads Soon

This article was written on October 06, 2006 by CyberNet.

Microsoft Office 2007 Logo ActiveWin posted some information today that was made available on Microsoft Connect regarding the future availability of Office 2007 Beta 2. According to the information Microsoft will stop offering the downloads on October 25 as they prepare to send Office 2007 to the manufacturer to be chiseled onto CD’s for its January release.

Here is some more information that was provided:

We are thrilled with the incredible excitement around the upcoming 2007 Microsoft Office system as is evident by over 3 million people installing the Beta 2 and later Beta2TR builds. With your help, we have far exceeded our technical participation goals. At this time, we are pleased to announce that the 2007 Office system will be released to manufacturing (RTM) in the next few weeks. We thank you for your participation in the planning, development, and testing of this new release. As we approach the end of the beta testing phase of Office 2007, we would like to make you aware of several upcoming events that will affect you.

  • On October 25, the Office Preview site will be closed down. Since this is the home of all Beta2TR product downloads, you will not be able to download Beta2TR after 10/25. All other information currently found on the Office Preview site will be migrated to the Office Online website (accessible via online help from within Office 2007 applications). This includes the FAQ, Product Guide, Top 10, Overview, the Demo tab, the New UI tab for programs, and other related information.
  • Will there be a release candidate or other beta release beyond Beta2TR?
No. We are not planning to make any further builds available to technical beta testers. Office 2007 products will be available in retail channels early next year. The Beta2TR build is set to expire on March 15, 2007 for all client products and May 31, 2007 for all server products. This should allow you to use Beta2TR until you can upgrade to the retail version.
  • Will I receive a free copy of 2007 Office system products?
Copies of 2007 Office system final product are not automatically distributed to all participants at the end of the Technical Beta. This program has been a volunteer effort by participants for the mutual benefit of you/your organization and the Microsoft Office team to enable feedback on your testing of ‘real world’ usage scenarios, and improvement of the final product quality for all Office users.

So there you have it…no free version for us. I knew that Microsoft wasn’t going to be giving out free copies of Office 2007 just because you participated in the testing process but that would be pretty cool. I guess the current version that I am running is good until March 15, 2007 so I can get by for a little while.

Download Office 2007 while you still can.

Download Picasa 2.5 Beta 3 – New Features

This article was written on August 20, 2006 by CyberNet.

Picasa 2.5 Google has finally released Picasa 2.5 Beta 3 and it has some nice new features. The most notable of the features would be the screensaver option which can be found under the Tools menu. This feature was in Beta 2 but there are some additional tweaks that you can do to it.

When you click the “Configure Screensaver” option from the Tools menu you will see the Display Properties window pop-up and it should look similar to the screenshot that I took. You can then click the “Settings” button and it will let you customize multiple options. You can choose which folders Picasa will grab photos from, have it display images from your Picasa Web Albums, and choose the visual effects for the screensaver. I think the new “Pan and Zoom” visual effect is the best.

There are also a few improvements that they have made, such as to the movie file support, but it looks like they are nearing another release. The number of changes keep getting smaller and smaller so I would imagine that the final version is right around the corner.

Ubiquity: Where the Command Line Meets Firefox

This article was written on August 27, 2008 by CyberNet.

ubiquity.png

Mozilla has released a new prototype extension that attempts to bring the command line to the browser. The extension, called Ubiquity, uses a set of predefined commands to do things like map an address the user has highlighted, shoot off an email, and more. A good example of this can be seen in the screenshot above where the user highlighted “Chicago Comics,” launched Ubiquity, and was given a list of matching addresses.

Once you’ve got Ubiquity installed you’ll be able to press Control+Space (Option+Space on Mac) to launch the command line window. From there you can use one of the 71 built-in commands (that URL will only work if you’ve installed Ubiquity) to manipulate highlighted text, perform searches, and more. Plus users can even create and share their own Ubiquity commands.

The extension is pretty powerful, and I was surprised at it’s stability considering what an early release it is. They’ve setup a nice tutorial for beginners that will walk you through how a lot of the different stuff works, and it’s something you’ll really need to go through if you want to make the most of what it has to offer. There’s also a video demonstration I’ve posted at the end of this article.

I’ve read on some sites that a feature like this could be something we see in the next big Firefox release. In the past Mozilla has said that they only add features to the browser that will be used by over 90 percent of their users. Ubiquity is undeniably appealing to power users who praise the keyboard, but anyone that is mouse-centric probably won’t touch this with a ten foot pole. My guess is that this one will remain in the land of add-ons.

So what do you think of it? Is it something you’ll use, just try out, or don’t even have any plans on installing it?

Thanks Trip!

CamStudio 2.5 – Free Screencast Recorder

This article was written on September 11, 2007 by CyberNet.

CamStudio 2.5 Beta CamStudio is one of the best free screencast recorders available, and it just got a little bit better. The developer recently released CamStudio 2.5 Beta 1 and it includes several new features that users are surely going to love. I think my favorite things are being able to select a specific window to record and highlighting the mouse clicks:

  • Record region by window
  • Have CamStudio highlight left/right mouse clicks
  • Multi-language support for Recorder, SWF Producer, and Player
  • Record for a preset amount of time
  • Add a timestamp, caption, or watermark to the video
  • You can redirect a video viewer to another URL once the video has finished playing

Vista is not completely supported yet, but a workaround is available. I just tried it in Vista and didn’t have to use the workaround. Maybe it has something to do with me having Vista’s new Compatibility Pack installed?

While this is a pretty cool program there is still a small part of me that is partial to Jing. That’s the free screencast software TechSmith recently released, and it’s extremely easy to use yet offers all the features most people would need. If using any software seems like too much of a chore then checkout what the web-based Screencast.com has to offer.

Microsoft To Release Office 12 Technical Beta In March

For those of you who have downloaded the Windows Vista Build 5308 February CTP then you might not want to try and install Microsoft Office 12 Beta 1 (also known as Microsoft Office 2007 Beta 1). There are currently some issues between the two pieces of software and Microsoft is working on a fix for Microsoft Office 12. They are expecting to release the Microsoft Office 12 Technical Beta (which will contain the fix for Vista 5308) sometime in March. For those of you that are official testers then you will be able to find the Office 12 download at the BetaPlace (http://beta.microsoft.com). Maybe they will even throw in some other bug fixes :D !

PhraseExpress 5 Beta – Text Predictions

This article was written on December 13, 2007 by CyberNet.

PhraseExpress is one of our favorite freeware applications because of the sheer power it harnesses. They’re stepping up their game with the new PhraseExpress 5 that is slated for release sometime next month, but in the meantime they have a Beta version that you can kick around.

Version 5 introduces several new features, and two of them are particularly great. The first one is an automatic text prediction tool that will learn phrases that you commonly type. That’s right, if it sees you repeating the same phrases over and over it will automatically start suggesting them in a small popup as you’re typing.

The other cool feature is a more advanced clipboard that retains several of your recently copied text snippets. By default the Windows clipboard is only able to store the last item that you copied, but with PhraseExpress 5 you can access several text items that you’ve previously copied. To retrieve them you’ll simply use the Shift+Ctrl+V keyboard shortcut.

I’m sure you want to see all of this in action, and there’s no better way than with a video demonstration:

PhraseExpress is free for personal use, but the Beta version will expire on January 31, 2008. They expect the final release to be completed before then, so this is just a way to ensure people upgrade to the latest version.

What To Expect From OneNote 12

This article was written on January 11, 2006 by CyberNet.

It looks as though we can expect the future OneNote 12 to be a centralized place to store all of your data. I am currently a college student and use OneNote for every class that I have. It is great to take notes on and then I can always keep them at the end of the semester without wondering where I am going to store them. OneNote 12, however, will allow users to gather screen clippings, audio/video, printed documents, scanned documents, and photos of documents. This will benefit users by preventing the need to have unending stacks of papers on your desk. It sounds like Microsoft is making a powerful application even more powerful.
