G-Mate Mag Gun controller for Xbox and PS3 gets FCC approval; we’d like to see them try and stop it

Hopefully you had your Campbell’s Chunky Fully Loaded Beef Stew this morning, because it takes a Man to look down the barrel of the G-Mate Mag Gun and live. The weapon just passed through the FCC unscathed, and now it’s gunning for the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC. The basic operation is simple enough, with triggers, face buttons, a d-pad and everything else you’d need to ape a modern console controller. There’s only one analog nub, but that’s of course because the gun’s own motion is meant to emulate the second. G-Mate isn’t so clear on how that part of the gun works, but from what we can glean, it’s basically an accelerometer and / or gyroscope, which you calibrate to the center of your particular screen with a dedicated button. A sensitivity knob completes the Mag Gun-specific functionality — which probably won’t revolutionize the FPS genre, but certainly might give those suspicious of the Move or too masculine for the XCM Fire something to watch out for. Check out some videos of it in action after the break.

Sony execs talk PlayStation Move expectations, PS4 details

The PlayStation Move is now less than a month from hitting stores shelves, and it looks like some Sony execs are already busy starting to manage expectations. Speaking with Eurogamer this week, Sony Computer Entertainment senior vice president Ray Maguire chose to compare the Move’s launch to that of the EyeToy for the PlayStation 2, saying that “exactly as with EyeToy in the PS2 days, it’s a product that needs to be sampled. You need to get your hands on it. You need to understand it. You need to try it.” Maguire further went on to say he’s “not particularly” expecting “massive” day one sales, but that he expects sales to grow as word of mouth spreads. In other PlayStation news, Sony’s Kaz Hirai seems to have effectively ruled out a download-only future for the eventual PS4 in an interview with MCV, with him saying that a “digital future is over ten years away.” Hirai then went on to note that “we do business in parts of the world where network infrastructure isn’t as robust as one would hope,” and that “here’s always going to be requirement for a business of our size and scope to have a physical medium.” No word if that also applies to Sony’s future handhelds as well.

Sony phasing out 120GB and 250GB PS3 SKUs, the latter now going for $299 at Fry’s

From a supply chain management standpoint, this all makes sense — why have four separate PS3 SKUs with various HDD sizes when just a pair will do? After announcing last week that a 160GB and 320GB PS3 Slim would be making landfall in the US and Europe, it seems as if Sony has decided to phase out the existing 120GB and 250GB flavors. There’s no definitive word on when production on those will stop (we’re surmising that the stop order has already been placed), but it looks as if some retailers are already starting up fire sales on the now-old models. For those curious, that’s a Fry’s installation pictured above, which is selling their leftover 250GB units for just $299, or the same price as the incoming 160GB unit. Decisions, decisions…

USB Dongle Claims to Deliver First Easy Hack for PS3

If it works as advertised, a USB dongle could soon break the PlayStation 3’s seemingly hackproof seal.

An obscure group called PS Jailbreak is selling a USB dongle that will supposedly modify the PS3 so users can dump backed up (aka pirated) games onto the system’s hard drive to play them just like legitimate copies.

We write this with such cautious language because hackers have hailed the PlayStation 3 as a console Everest. Sony baked extremely strong security into the system, and though the PS3 has been hacked by a few tinkerers (including George Hotz, the first person to unlock the iPhone), no tried-and-true mod has emerged.

Until we can get our hands on a one of these USB dongles, color us skeptical. (The fact that the “PS Jailbreak” website doesn’t seem to be working right now doesn’t give us much confidence.) Meanwhile, check out the video above claiming to demonstrate the mod running a backup copy of a game and let us know what you think.

Who needs George Hotz anyway? A USB modchip for the PS3 has emerged from the mists this morning, purporting to allow the dumping of games onto nearby storage — the console’s internal HDD and external drives are both a-ok — as well as the subsequent playing of said games without the need for the original disc. Could it be the backup/piracy nirvana Sony loyalists have been awaiting for so long? Well, there’s a video showing the little USB device apparently working, and the PSX-Scene team say they have personally verified that it does what it claims to do, but skepticism remains advisable here. The PS3 has been a fortress of hacker unfriendliness, so we’d rather kick back, relax, and wait for some braver souls than us to do the testing. For now, the video awaits after the break.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

PS3 gets Titanium Blue makeover for Gran Turismo 5 launch bundle; landing in Japan on November 3

Shock of all horrors, Gran Turismo 5 will actually, finally launch in Japan and Europe on November 3. Of course, being more concerned with hardware as we are, our excitement is focused on the rich blue hue that will adorn PS3 consoles bundled with the grandiosely delayed racing game over in Nippon this fall. The ¥35,980 ($421) Gran Turismo 5 Racing Pack will be composed of a Limited Edition copy of the game plus a repainted skinny PlayStation 3 with a 160GB hard drive. Time to give your old importer buddy a call, eh?

160GB PS3 Slim, 320GB Move bundle coming to US and Europe this fall

The leaks weren’t wrong, they just weren’t the whole story. A 160GB PlayStation 3 Slim is indeed coming to the US — Europe, too — but additionally, there’s a heftier 320GB Sports Champions Move bundle. The former standalone console is available now stateside for $299, and according to the GamesCom press conference, Europeans will have to wait until October for 299 Euros. As for the biggie, which includes the game and one-player Move package, that’s due out September 19th in US (or September 15th across the pond) for $399 and 349 Euros, respectively — just in time for holiday shopping sprees.

160GB PS3 slim spotted on GameStop’s website

One of the following just occurred today: either a GameStop employee just spilled the beans on an upcoming Sony announcement, or someone in the retailer’s IT department has a cruel sense of humor. At any rate, IGN spotted a listing today (since removed) for a slim PlayStation 3 with 160GB of storage, purported to be shipping today for $299.99. That’s unfortunately not the case, but while we’d wager a capacity increase is inevitable, it’d be infinitely more intriguing if that new hard drive came part and parcel with a pallette swap — something in white, perhaps. Hey, we can dream. It might be worth noting that Sony’s got a press conference lined up at GamesCom for mid-afternoon ET tomorrow; we’ll keep our German-trained ear to the ground, just in case.

Update: Newegg is now showing the same deal as above, with a projected arrival date of August 19 [Thanks, Disaresta51].

Splitfish announces power-saving FragFX Shark controller for PS3, PC and Mac

SplitFish isn’t providing a ton of details on this one just, but it has announced that its new FragFX Shark controller for the PS3, PC and Mac will be making its official debut at Gamescon later this month, and it’s given us our first look at it. As you can see, it’s not all that different from the company’s standard FragFX PS3 controller, but the company promises that it will be more “ecology-friendly” thanks to some new power-saving measures that’ll let you get 50 hours of gameplay from a single AA battery. Also set to debut at the show are the FragFX Piranha and FragFX Barracuda, although Splitfish isn’t still saying anything about those apart from the fact they’re also PS3 controllers. Head on past the break for the complete press release.

UK gamers finally get a taste of overpriced immersion with the PS3 X-Dream Gyroxus motion chair (video)

UK gamers finally get a taste of overpriced immersion with the PS3 X-Dream Gyroxus motion chair (video)

Leaning in your chair while gaming? It’s a natural thing — we all do it. However, it’s rare that the chair helps, doing its part to increase the thrill factor by tipping you even closer to the laminate flooring. That’s exactly what the X-Dream Gyroxus Gaming Chair offers, motion gaming in a somewhat portable package rather more friendly for the living room than some alternatives we’ve seen. However, it’s also rather more limited, working with either the Xbox 360 or PS3, courtesy of custom controllers, but having no room for a wheel and pedals, so Gran Turismo junkies will have to choose between this and their G27. Then there’s the cost: a rather steep £399.95. If that doesn’t sound bad, consider that this chair has been available to rumble American behinds for over two years now and is currently selling for $250 — well less than half what UK gamers are being asked to pay. Worth the premium? Let the video after the break be your guide.
