PSP mod adds mouse, a touch of class to Sony’s beloved handheld

Not all input devices are created equal. Some of us long for that old coin-op console joystick every time we bring up GalagaREMIX on the iPhone, while others can’t imagine engaging in a first person shooter without the aid of his or her trusty mouse. To that end, PSP hacker TokyoDrift (not his / her real name) has wired an old PS2 mouse into his portable’s serial port, by way of an ATMEL ATmega8 chip-sporting breadboard. The various PSP buttons can be mapped to the mouse’s buttons or scroll wheel, and scaling and sample rates are adjustable. We know there are plenty of you out there that can’t wait to try this one out for yourself — so hit the read link, peruse the forums, and get inspired.

UMD-less Patapon 2 officially released for PSP, another brick in the wall?

Joystiq reported back in April that Patapon 2’s release would be a UMD-less affair, and now it’s officially here. The followup game is now available as a digital download on the PSN, and as a redemption code voucher in retail locations. The sans-UMD format is a United States only test for Sony, and certainly leads us to wonder if that UMD-less PSP could possibly, potentially be in the works. The $19.99 title is available today, disc-less PSP available in your wildest dreams.

Next PSP to rely on Memory Stick HG-Micro for storage?

You can be sure this won’t be the last PSP rumor to surface before E3, but the word going around now is that the so-called PSP Go! (or PSP2, or PSP Slide…) won’t rely primarily on some internal memory for storage as previously speculated, but on something like Sony’s new Memory Stick HG-Micro format, which is about 40MB/s faster than a standard Memory Stick Duo card. That word apparently comes from some “sources close to PSP development” that have spoken to PC World’s Game On blog, who seem to also be suggesting that the Memory Sticks would effectively replace UMDs as a game delivery format, and not simply be used for downloaded games and whatnot. All of which certainly seems reasonable enough, even if it’s still far from being anywhere close to official.

PXP-900 handheld ditches the UMD drive, and the PSP

A new PSP may well be on the horizon, but it looks like the knock-off business is still going strong with the classic model, and it’s kicked out one of its most faithful / blatant homages to date with this new so-called PXP-900. While it doesn’t do anything crazy like actually play PSP games, you can apparently make use of the included emulator to play NES, GameBoy, SNES, and Genesis games — even including those rare few 32X games, from the sound of it. Otherwise, you can expect the usual basic PMP functionality, along with a 2GB of internal memory, an SD card slot for expansion, a TV out port, an FM tuner, and your choice of four different colors — all for the low, low price of $89.99.

Rumor: PSP Refresh Coming This Fall

The concrete details of Sony’s latest–and most significant–update to the PSPwill come at E3 in June, according to “sources directly involved with the new system.” The console has also reportedly been named: Sony will be calling it the PSP Go, in keeping with a recent line of add-ons for the European PSP brand. This information comes from 1up, which says it has confirmed these details with said sources.

The PSP Go, set to arrive in Japan in September and in the States in the months following, will do away with the UMD slot, as expected. Sony, however, will be making available more than 100 older PSP titles for download on the system (Gran Turismo Mobile is among those named).

1Up adds:

As for the hardware itself, the redesign will include a d-pad, analog nub, and face buttons as part of a sliding unit sticking out below the screen (as seen in our mockup above). Unfortunately for those looking for twin-stick shooter controls, the new system will not have a second analog stick, but instead will remain consistent with the current control configuration.

Sony, not surprisingly, isn’t commenting.

Sony unveiling UMD-less PSP with slide-out buttons at E3?

Whispers of a new or revised PSP have been growing decidedly louder as of late, and now 1UP‘s gotten a ton of new details from what it claims are “sources directly involved with the new system” — our favorite kind of people, actually. Here’s what they were told: UMD is out, replaced instead with options for either 8GB or 16GB of built-in flash memory. Also nixed is any hope of a “PSP-4000,” with Sony opting instead to use a subtitle. Three rumored names include PSP Slide, PSP Flip, and PSP Go!, the latter of which borrows from Sony’s pre-existing Go! brand and suggests there might be a built-in camera à la PSP-3000’s Go!Cam peripheral. The same D-pad, analog nub, and face button configuration remains, but they now slide out from the bottom of the unit (see mockup, pictured). Expected launch is September for Japan and late October / early November for US, and coming with ’em are over 100 classic and new downloadable titles including Gran Turismo Mobile as a headliner. Sony’s supposedly going official with all this during its E3 press conference in early June, and for now they’re opting to give the staple “does not comment on rumors or speculation” response. That’s one mighty intriguing rumor — we can only hope it pans out.

PSP firmware 5.50 arrives to fulfill your every subfolder exploration need

There’s a new PSP update in town, so hold onto your calloused thumbs. Firmware 5.50 borrows the PS3’s XMB “Information Board” (pictured) for getting PlayStation and PlayStation Store news wherever you’ve got WiFi and a yearning, and there’s also a games information search that works straight from the XMB as well. The update also brings the incredibly tardy ability to browse Memory Stick sub-folders for media, and Trend Micro Security and Safety for protecting the browser from malicious sites and protecting kids from adult content. It’s not a landmark update, but it’s something.

Lime green PSP in the works?

Sony might think the DSi is just for kids, but it’s never had any problems pumping out candy-colored PSPs — and the next hue off the line might be lime green, if this image supposedly leaked from inside a Sony factory is any indication. It’s, uh, seasonally appropriate, at the very least — anyone revved up by this?

Sony patents PSP-controlled spy car

Check it out, all you budding G. Gordon Liddys — if the usual assortment of spy gadgets isn’t doing the job, Sony’s got something in the works that should be right up your alley. According to a little site called Siliconera, Sony’s European arm has filed a patent for a remote-controlled car uses the PSP as an interface. This bad boy is equipped with a camera that feeds video back to the hand held and allows the user to upload the footage to a website. If that weren’t all, the patent makes mention of an augmented reality racing game incorporating virtual markers and paths that the players physically create — that is, the junk in your apartment is incorporated into on-screen game play. Innocent fun, right? Well, perhaps — at least until Iran gets involved. They’re still pretty bent by the whole squirrel thing.

Latest PSP2 rumor covers familar ground, adds pre-Xmas release date

Not that we needed much more evidence that 2009 would be the year ‘o PSP rumors, but Pocket Gamer is now reporting that it has heard from an “insider source” who says that the PSP2 will indeed be released before Christmas of this year. That source, who’s supposedly a “developer working on the new hardware,” also backs up some of the earlier rumors about the design of the device itself, saying that it will be more like the iPhone than the current PSP, and that it will boast a sliding touchscreen that conceals the buttons and dual analog controls when it’s closed. Not much more than that, unfortunately, but who know’s what next week’s rumor will bring? We’re personally hoping for a surprise Atari Lynx rebirth to really shake things up.
