Palm Pre 2 swims across the English Channel in three days, launches November 12th in the UK

French citizens have been enjoying webOS 2.0 with their morning baguette for over two weeks, but it’s one step closer to home today — Pocket-lint reports that the Palm Pre 2 will launch in the United Kingdom this Friday. What’s more, the 1GHz handset won’t be chained to a British carrier, but rather released into the wild completely SIM-free, which probably means future Just Typists will need to buy it direct from HP. As for the promised pre-orders for US students, we’re sorry to say they’ve failed to materialize; the Facebook page that once clearly stated “preorders begin 11/8” now simply reads “Palm Pre 2 coming soon.” Soon enough for you?

Motorola Droid Pro official on Verizon: $179.99 after rebate, pre-sales begin November 9th

Exactly as suspected, the Droid Pro will start its Verizon retail adventure tomorrow, with pre-sales at selected VZW stores and the carrier’s online outlet, to be followed by its proper shelf debut on November 18th. Price is set at $179.99 on a two-year contract, provided you’re happy to take care of a $100 mail-in rebate. Moto will be hoping business types lap this offer up, as it has equipped the Droid Pro with an unusual (outside of RIM’s realm) portrait QWERTY keyboard as well as a dual-mode CDMA/GSM wireless chip. A 3.1-inch display, 1GHz of processing power, and a 5 megapixel autofocus cam fill out the spec sheet. Jump past the break for the full press release.

Office 2007 SP2 to Include Save as PDF & ODF Support

This article was written on May 22, 2008 by CyberNet.

office 2007 save as pdf.jpg

Microsoft unexpectedly made an announcement yesterday that Office 2007 Service Pack 2 will include XML Paper Specification (XPS), Portable Document Format (PDF), and Open Document Format (ODF) support once it is released in 2009. That’s pretty big news because, as you might recall, Adobe forced Microsoft to remove XPS & PDF support from Office 2007 when it was still in the Beta stage. Surprisingly, Microsoft complied despite other competitors having had this feature for years, such as OpenOffice.org. In the end Microsoft still offered the functionality, but as a separate download.

Office 2007 SP2 will also bring native support for ODF, which is often associated with the OpenOffice.org suite. As of right now Microsoft has a plug-in that offers conversion capabilities with the ODF format, but Office 2007 SP2 users will actually be able to set that as the default for saving new documents:

When using SP2, customers will be able to open, edit and save documents using ODF and save documents into the XPS and PDF fixed formats from directly within the application without having to install any other code. It will also allow customers to set ODF as the default file format for Office 2007.

This is a pretty big step for Microsoft, but it’s too bad these kind of features couldn’t have been included with the final release. In order for people to take advantage of these features they’ll have to download SP2 when it is released next year, but my guess is that people don’t update their Office 2007 as much as they should. On the bright side of things the next version of Office should include these features out-of-the-box.

Windows 8 about two years away, according to Microsoft Netherlands

When will Microsoft bring Windows 8 to market? 2012’s looking like a safe bet — not only was it slated for that date in an allegedly leaked product roadmap, but Microsoft Netherlands hints that the OS is just two years away. Buried at the bottom of a press release celebrating the first birthday of Windows 7, you’ll find the above Dutch phrase, which Google Translate returns as “Furthermore, Microsoft is of course the next version of Windows. But it will take about two years before “Windows 8″ on the market.” There are certainly plenty of reasons why Microsoft’s riskiest product bet might not hit its target date, but the machine translation seems clear. Here’s hoping the OS will ship with some suitably futuristic hardware.

UK carrier’s roadmap points to October 21 release for Windows Phone 7, over 2,000 apps at launch

The whole world and his neighbor’s dog may already know when Windows Phone 7 will be announced, but when are the actual phones going to hit actual shelves? If you’re in the US, that time still looks to be a month away, but the UK release window has just been narrowed down from late October to a single, albeit still speculative, date: October 21. Our tipster forwards the above snapshot from a Three UK document showing a “Windows 7Phone” nestled in between the BlackBerry Torch and Samsung Europa. Its Super AMOLED display tells us we’re definitely looking at a Samsung handset, while the 4-inch diagonal suggests it’ll be the Cetus (SGH-i916/7). This sheet of revelation also finally gives us a hint as to the number of apps WP7 will start off with, enumerating them at “over 2,000 at launch.” We don’t know why Microsoft’s been so shy about that number — 2,000 good apps are more than enough.

Nokia N8 going on general sale October 22, available online October 15

Been waiting for the N8 but weren’t sure enough about buying it to get into the pre-order queue? Well, Nokia must have found your lack of faith disturbing as it’s now stiffing those who didn’t pre-order its all-new handset with another couple of weeks of waiting. Those without Nokia logos tattooed on their lower backs will finally be able to purchase the N8 on October 15 — but only via Nokia’s own web store — before a general release hits the UK and presumably most of the rest of Europe on October 22 (slightly later than the promised October 1 landing date). The distribution is indeed wide, however, with all the major UK carriers, plus Tesco Mobile and Virgin Mobile, joining the Carphone Warehouse and Phones 4U in offering the phone that has “a black belt in entertainment.” Yeah, Nokia, we’re finding this wait really entertaining.

Microsoft prepping Windows Phone 7 for an October 21st launch? (update: US on Nov. 8?)

We’d heard October. We heard Europe in October. We heard next month. Now, Neowin cites anonymous sources that Windows Phone 7 will arrive in the UK, France, Spain, Germany and Italy on precisely October 21st, and is preparing a good deal of marketing fanfare to support a fancy October 11th unveiling in New York City. We can’t say whether the rumor’s correct, but it’s certainly picking up steam, as these particular numbers were independently reported by Pocket-lint and the Spanish publication El Economista earlier this month as well. Now all we need is an alleged US release date — misery loves company, right?

Update: Microsoft expert Paul Thurrott says that while Redmond’s indeed holding an October 11th shindig in NYC, it’s not a Windows Phone event… but his source tells him the long-lost US launch date is actually November 8th. Imagine that!

[Thanks, Stephen]

Acer Liquid Metal handset confirmed for end of October in UK, has Froyo filling inside

Acer’s UK press team has been atypically loquacious today in disclosing the expected launch window and Android version for its upcoming Liquid Metal handset. We’ve confirmed ourselves that the end of October is the period now circled on Her Majesty’s calendar, though we suspect the rest of Europe, if not the entire world, will be getting to grips with the Froyo-packing smartphone at about that time as well. The unconfirmed specs (gotta keep a little mystery, right?) include the same 800MHz Qualcomm MSM7230 as inside the T-Mobile G2, a 3.6-inch display with 800 x 480 resolution, Bluetooth 3.0 onboard, and the handsome backplate you see above, which seems to have been made out of brushed aluminum. So how do you feel, is there room for yet another contender on your smartphone wishlist?

Rumor pegs Nintendo 3DS for November 11th in Japan

Remember when Nintendo said it’d release its release date for the 3DS autostereoscopic portable game system on the 29th of this month? We may already have the magic number — depending on how you interpret a few Japanese words. You see, a supposed video game accessory designer by the handle “nocchisan” recently tweeted that eleven Nintendo 3DS accessories will be released on November 11th, and asked his or her followers to kindly buy them up… while purportedly remarking that the 3DS itself will arrive at the same time. While the tweets in question can certainly be read that way, and it makes a certain amount of sense for accessories to appear at launch, our admittedly limited grasp of Japanese suggests an alternative translation: that it’s the accessories themselves (and not the 3DS) that will all arrive at the same time. There’s also the little matter of nocchisan himself, whose Twitter account has already disappeared — we have nothing actually connecting him to the accessory company except a link in his tweet.

Windows Phone 7 coming to Europe in October, US in November, according to Microsoft COO (video)

Here’s something that seems to have slipped the net from Kevin Turner’s recent presentation on Windows Phone 7 devices. While discussing the move to Microsoft’s next great hope in the mobile space, the Redmond COO told the world that the transition is expected to happen in the October timeframe across Europe, and in the November timeframe in the US. This is the most explicit anyone from Microsoft has been about the likely launch date for Windows Phone 7, and sets up the intriguing potentiality of Europeans getting to savor the goodness of the brand new OS ahead of their US brethren. See Kevin dishing the info on video after the break.

[Thanks, Abed]
