The Engadget app for BlackBerry gets updated to 1.0.1

Hey BlackBerry friends — we’ve got some news for you. The Engadget application (which is also available for the iPhone / iPod touch and webOS devices) has gone and gotten itself a little update on RIM’s platform. It’s nothing crazy, but we’ve made some bug fixes, and more importantly, added support for 5.0 devices (Bold, Curve, and Tour)! The devs also thoughtfully included keyboard shortcuts (T, B, N, P, and the spacebar) in this version for your convenience. All you have to do to get your hands on this baby is point your phone’s browser to our download page, or if you’ve already got the app installed, it should prompt you for an update automatically next time you open it. Storm users — we are working on a version for you as well, and everyone who is curious about the Android app: you should see it released this month!

BlackBerry slider photos leak out!

You can consider our minds completely and utterly blown tonight, as we’ve just stumbled upon these photos of what appears to be a new BlackBerry device… a vertical slider. The source (BlackBerry Leaks) doesn’t seem to be able to confirm the legitimacy of the photos, but we’re mostly convinced that this is some variation of a RIM device. While BB Leaks speculates on the possibility of this being the Storm 3, Kevin Michaluk over at CrackBerry suggests this might not be a device headed to market, rather an early version which has been scrapped, similar to that Magnum handset that floated onto the internet recently (though Kevin suggests that our friends in Canada may very well have plans for something in this form factor). What we can say with assurance, however, is that this device coupled with those new BIS 3.0 Gmail integration upgrades, that forthcoming RIM WebKit browser, and a rumored new OS would help push things into the territory of that dream smartphone we pleaded for back in 2008. Coincidence? We think not.

RIM dev webinar hints at BlackBerry OS of the future?

See that Storm-esque device there? You may have noticed that the home screen looks positively nothing like the experience you’re used to — and that’s because it’s not. Shown off as part of a slide deck in RIM’s “Super Apps” webinar for developers last week, the company’s official explanation is that this is a pure, off-the-cuff mockup, not indicative of anything they’re working on for future devices or releases of BlackBerry OS. To be fair, when you take the shot in context with the bullet points and the fact that this presentation was geared squarely at devs, we can imagine that they really were just using it to get folks’ creative juices flowing — but it makes you wonder, doesn’t it? There’s enough active and location-aware content here to make even a heavily-widgeted Android home screen drool, so seriously, why not do this in 6.0, RIM?

The Indie Phone Maker’s Last Stand [Palm]

The Palm Pre unveiling stands in my memory as one of the most refreshing moments in modern history. Palm had done it—they had created a great phone Nokia would’ve killed for. But today, that’s just not enough.

As Palm teeters on the brink of either ruin or acquisition, let’s take stock of what they did right:

• They abandoned an entrenched but aging platform for something new an innovative, and they didn’t half-ass it: Palm OS was dead, WebOS was here.

• WebOS was actually good. If you discounted the lack of apps at launch, it was arguably more capable than anything else on the market.

• The Pre was totally buyable. It’s one of the few smartphones I’d consider buying, and would also recommend to the rest of my family. And the hardware didn’t suck.

• They got huge buzz, and they earned it.

Sure, their app ecosystem was slow to develop, and their TV ads were underwhelming at their best, and creepy at their worst. But that’s not what really matters, right? Palm accomplished something with the Pre, and we could all see that.

This was the line from Jason’s Pre review that he caught the most flak for, but seriously, fuck that, it was spot on:

I’m bored of the iPhone. The core functionality and design have remained the same for the last two years, and since 3.0 is just more of the same, and-barring some kind of June surprise-that’s another year of the same old icons and swiping and pinching. It’s time for something different.

The Pre’s spell was such that it made everything else feel old. Palm made something different—and it was something we would have paid obscene amounts of money for just a year prior. More than anything, Palm succeeded wildly at reinventing its products, its company and its image, by its own standards and by ours.

The problem is, it’s not 2006 anymore. Those standards don’t apply.

There was a time when it was enough for a company like Palm to release a fantastic phone, and for years, that’s exactly what they focused on. But today, to fight in the smartphone wars is to fight against multi-platform giants. And the rules of engagement have changed: It’s no longer phone vs. phone, or mobile OS vs mobile OS. Today there are apps, and even if a phone maker nails that ecosystem, they have to integrate it into the company’s other stuff: desktops, tablets, the living room, the workplace, the bathroom, the car—not to mention all the music, movies, TV and other media consumption any given human expects to be able to tap into on a new device.

The era of the standalone smartphone company is over. To say it plainly: If you want to make the best smartphone these days, it’s just not enough to make the best handset, or even the best OS. So pour one out for the indie phone makers! I, for one, am sorry to see them go.

UPDATE: Jon Rubinstein has issued a company-wide memo to soothe worried employees. It’s suitably last-stand-y:

To accelerate sales, we initiated Project JumpStart nearly three weeks ago. Since then, nearly two hundred Palm Brand Ambassadors, supplemented by Palm employees from Sunnyvale, have been training Verizon sales reps across the U.S. on our products. Early results from the stores have already shown improvement on product knowledge and sales week over week. You may have also seen a growing number of Palm ads on billboards, bus shelters, buses, and subway stations-all getting the word out about Palm.

As I said before, the root of Palm’s problems are essentially unaddressable, so it’s no shock that he doesn’t lay out a clear, detailed vision for a second (third?) Palm turnaround. But the sight of their CEO so obviously aiming a garden hose at a forest fire can’t be much comfort to Palmers, or investors.

Keepin’ it real fake, part CCLVI: BlueBerry gets upgraded with optical pad

You see, this isn’t our first run-in with BlueBerry. Nay — this is a firm that has shadowed Waterloo’s moves for some time, so when it came time for the real thing to make the transition from trackballs to optical pads, the Shenzhen doppelganger naturally had to follow suit. The result is this here BlueBerry 9500, a device that looks more like a Bold 9500 grafted to a Nokia E72 than it does a Bold 9700 — but hey, for folks torn between their Finnish and Canadian loyalties, this might be the perfect solution. The impressive spec sheet includes a TV tuner (complete with 9-inch retractable antenna), dual SIM support, and WiFi, and — most importantly — the optical pad is said to be “decent.” Check out the gallery for a couple more shots — just don’t expect any App World access with this one.

Gartner: Global Phone Sales on the Rise Again

A new Gartner report indicates that worldwide mobile phone sales to end users grew 8.3 percent in Q4 2009, compared to the same period a year ago. Total sales for the year were down slightly at 1.21 billion units (down 0.9 percent from 2008). But given the huge slump earlier in the year, this is pretty positive news.
Nokia led the pack once again with 36.4 percent of worldwide sales (down from 38.6 percent). Samsung rang in at 19.5 percent (up from 16.3), wile LG finished third at 10.1 percent (up from 8.4). Motorola and Sony Ericsson declined sharply to 4.8 and 4.5 percent (down from 8.7 and 7.6 in 2008, respectively).
Smartphone sales by OS (pictured) is perhaps more revealing. Symbian captured 46.9 percent of all smartphone sales worldwide, but that’s down from 52.4 percent in 2008. Meanwhile, RIM and Apple took the next two spots, with 19.9 and 14.4 percent, respectively (up from 16.6 and 8.2).
Meanwhile, Windows Mobile sank to 8.7 percent (down from 11.8), while Android rocketed to 3.9 percent (up from just 0.5 percent shortly after its introduction in late 2008). Palm’s new webOS came in with just 0.7 percent of the market.

Gartner just released its annual numbers for worldwide mobile phone sales to end users in the year known as two thousand nine. Looking at smartphone OS market share alone, Gartner shows the iPhone OS, Android, and RIM making the biggest gains (up 6.2, 3.4, and 3.3 percentage points from 2008, respectively) at the expense of Windows Mobile (off 3.1 percentage points) and Symbian (off 5.5 points). Although Gartner says that Symbian “has become uncompetitive in recent years,” (ouch) it concedes that market share is still strong especially for Nokia; something backed up by Nokia’s Q4 financials and reported quarterly smartphone growth by 5 percentage points. Regarding total handsets of all classifications sold, Nokia continues to dominate with 36.4% of all sales to end users (down from 38.6% in 2008) while Samsung and LG continue to climb at the expense of Motorola (dropping from 7.6% to 4.5% of worldwide sales in 2009) and Sony Ericsson. Kindle for BlackBerry e-reader app now available

Amazon is today adding BlackBerrys to its stable of Kindle-compatible devices and also taking the opportunity to remind us that it’s working hard on Mac and iPad versions of its software. The app is a freebie download for Americans (sadly it’s not international just yet) and should offer the same functionality as its PC and iPhone brethren — namely automatic syncing via Whispersync and what Amazon hopes will be a seamless reading experience from one device to the next. There’s also an in-app book store, as well as the ability to create bookmarks and view annotations from other portable Kindle readers. Go download it at the Amazon link if you care, or move right along if you don’t.

RIM CEO Offers a Peek at New BlackBerry Browser

BlackBerry addicts won’t have to wait much longer to get a true browsing experience through their smartphones.

A new BlackBerry browser  based on the Webkit layout engine is on its way and it will be extremely “network efficient,” Research In Motion co-CEO Mike Lazaridis told attendees at the Mobile World Congress conference in Barcelona Tuesday.  What RIM did not mention is that Webkit layout engine is also used by the iPhone, Android and Symbian mobile operating systems.

“It’s going to be well worth the wait,” says Lazaridis.

The emphasis on network efficiency an interesting spin by a company whose cellphone browser is one of its weakest points. Unlike the iPhone, the Motorola Droid or any other smartphone today, the BlackBerry does not display web pages just the way your PC would. Instead, Blackberry users have to contend with a stripped-down, mobile version of a web page that is decidedly 1990s in its look. In what was seen as an attempt to solve the problem, last year RIM acquired Torch Mobile, which makes the Webkit-based Iris browser.

During his keynote, Lazaridis offered a quick glimpse into what the new browser could look like on the BlackBerry.

A better browser could put RIM on a stronger footing against rivals, writes Shaw Wu, an analyst at Kaufman Bros.  in a research note to his company’s clients.

“Its current web browser is arguably the weakest part of the BlackBerry experience so a new version that will close the gap between Apple’s Safari, Palm’s WebOS browser and Google’s Chrome would be welcome,” says Wu. “We can’t help but wonder how many more units RIM could sell with a quality browse.” RIM sold 10.1 million BlackBerries last quarter compared to Apple’s 8.7 million iPhones.

Lazaridis did not mention when RIM plans to release its new browser. But RIM could make it available as a public beta for its developers in April at the WES 2010 conference, says Wu.

“We believe this makes sense in helping work out kinks and bugs with such an important software release,” he says.

BlackBerrys are also better than other smartphones–for carriers that is–says Lazaridis. A BlackBerry is more efficient, consumes less bandwidth than competing smartphones and scales better than on telecom carrier networks, he says.

“Network operators can support three BlackBerry browsing sessions for every one other smart phone browsing session,” says Lazaridis.

Lazaridis’ comments were meant to highlight what some industry experts see as a possible bandwidth crisis facing the cellphone industry. Based on current data consumption patterns, operators are likely to find their available spectrum completely consumed in the next three to five years, according to analyst Peter Rysavy.

RIM CEO claims we are staring ‘down the barrel of a capacity crunch,’ should all get BlackBerrys to prevent it

Capacity crunch, isn’t that a breakfast cereal? RIM’s Mike Lazaridis seems to have been a real grouch at MWC this week as apparently he hasn’t stopped talking about the doom and gloom awaiting mobile carriers over the next few years. Focusing on the bandwidth-hungry North American market, Lazaridis has criticized the apparently irresponsible network saturation growth, which he sees as being primarily driven by app-centric operating systems. If you’re wondering who he could possibly be referring to, let Mike clarify it — according to him, you could carry five BlackBerry devices for each iPhone on a network. As evidence of his firm’s focus on efficiency, he points us to that freshly demoed WebKit browser, which he claims uses a third of the bandwidth required by the competition from Apple and Google. If only he wasn’t implying that owning a BlackBerry would save the internet, Mike’s sales pitch would be rather compelling — those are mighty impressive numbers he is citing.
