PeeWee debuts Pivot 2.0 spillproof, drop resistant netvertible for the little ones

Kids these days use gadgets almost as much as their less disaster-inclined adult friends, and PeeWee‘s been making laptops with that in mind for a while now. Well, the company’s just launched its newest laptop for kids, the Pivot 2.0 — which is basically the CTL 2go Convertible. This rugged little netvertible boasts an Intel N450 CPU, a touch screen that rotates 180 degrees and a webcam, and it’s packed with 15 educational games onboard. As far as ruggedeization goes, the laptop boasts a water-resistant keyboard, a plastic shell that should withstand minor drops, and rubber grips for easier carrying. The Pivot 2.0 is available now and it’ll run you $599. The full press release is below.

RAW STEEL SD Card is Made of Metal, Testosterone

Do you need a tough, waterproof, almost indestructible SD card? Then go ahead and buy any SD card you find in the store. I have dropped them, stepped on them and run them through a cycle in the washing machine, and all my cards still work fine.

If, however, you want to add a sliver of weight and a shiny metallic finish to your flash-storage, consider the RAW STEEL range from Hoodman, a steel-clad tough-guy whose caps-locked name seems to simultaneously yell and beat its doubtlessly very hairy chest.

The class-10 SDHC cards come in 4, 8, 16 and 32GB sizes, and Hoodman says that by shrinking the internals onto a single chip, space was made to add the armor plating.

Skipping over the inevitable “Blue Steel” Zoolander joke, there could be a case for using this card other than as a salve to your paranoia. What about a magnetic strip in (or on) your camera-bag, where you could stick these things like knives on the magnetic strip in your kitchen?

The RAW (ROAR!) STEEL cards will be available on November 15. Prices TBA, but consider that the same capacity plastic RAW cards run from $50-$190.

Motorola Defy makes a splash on T-Mobile this November 3rd for $99

T-Mobile USA’s tweet pretty much says it all — the Defy is nigh — and you’ll be able to pick Motorola’s ruggedized handset come November 3rd for a penny under $100 on-contract. It’s not the fastest handset on the block, saddled as it is with both Blur and Android 2.1, but there’s nothing quite like a handset that you can stab with a pen or dunk in the drink while it’s still turned on.

NextComputing Vigor Evo rugged PC shipping with three displays, 11TB storage

NextComputing has a line on the types of PCs we will always lust over, yet we’ll never ever be able to justify purchasing. Case in point: the Vigor Evo Plus is a thirty-five-plus pound behemoth, featuring a rugged mil-anodized external chassis, shock-mounted internal chassis, and options including a single or dual Xeon, up to 16GB ECC RAM, up to 11TB storage, up to six full-length, full-height PCI Express and PCI-X slots, and up to three integrated 17-inch displays. Call the company for a price quote if you’re curious — we weren’t up to the task, but we’re sure that it’s either this bad boy or our rent for the better part of a year. PR after the break.

ADATA’s S007 military spec USB flash drive is designed for the battlefield

It doesn’t boast the eSATA / USB 3.0 capabilities of the N909, but ADATA‘s new S007 is easily the tougher of the two. Designed to be fully compliant with US MIL-SPEC standards, this new USB key is available in capacities up to 32GB and should provide careless handlers with “unrivaled digital data protection from both impacts and electric shocks.” Both of ’em (it’s available in green and red) are wrapped in a rubber coating, and transfer at USB 2.0 speeds (upwards of 30MB/sec on the read side and 8MB/sec on the write side), but sadly, there’s no mention of a price or release date.

Motorola ES400S earns its keep on Sprint in October

You may not remember the Motorola ES400 announced back in June; it’s the first device to run Microsoft’s Windows Embedded Handheld platform, after all — an offshoot of WinMo 6.5.3 — and doesn’t have a whole lot of relevance to the average consumer. Well, let this be your refresher: Sprint has revealed that it intends to launch its own version of the phone, the ES400S, through a variety of Sprint sales channels next month, marking the first time an enterprise-oriented Moto has been branded and offered directly by a carrier. It meets a variety of standards for ruggedness and includes a 3-inch VGA display, full QWERTY keyboard, 3.2 megapixel camera (which actually performs the barcode scanning duties, not a traditional laser scanner), 802.11a / b / g, GPS, and both CDMA with EV-DO Rev. A and GSM / HSPA for international use. You get a 1540mAh battery in the box, but a whopping 3080mAh unit is available separately if you plan on enterprisin’ away from a charger for days on end. “Qualified” businesses will be able to get in on the ES400S starting sometime before the end of October for $499.99, while average Joes will have the option of paying $549.99 on a new two-year deal. Follow the break for the press release.
