Pentax teases a new K-series cam for May 21

Looks like those ultra-blurry photos of a new Pentax cam weren’t just a Sunday morning fever dream — the company’s now teasing the release of a new K-series DSLR on May 21. Obviously official details on what’s alleged to be the K7D are incredibly light, but there are already some rumored specs floating around — a square sensor with a 1.3 crop factor that may or may not be related to the one in the K20D, 1.0x viewfinder, new AF system, 3-inch screen, and 720p video are the highlights, but honestly, it’s all conjecture at this point. We’ll keep our ears to the ground — and our fingers crossed that this thing comes in white. Check a non-blurry pic of… something we were sent on Sunday after the break.

ASUS EeeBox PC B208 with discrete graphics, HDMI-out in June?

If we’re to believe a pre-sales agent’s response to a query about the availability of the EeeBox PC B208, then ASUS’ little HD nettop with dual-core Atom 330 processor, ATI Radeon HD 4530 graphics, and HDMI-out should pop for retail in June — for the UK anyway. A box that looks to be the ideal low-cost ($500ish), quiet (26dB), home theater PC riding your in-house 802.11n WiFi or gigabit Ethernet network. With Acer’s Ion-powered AspireRevo hitting the UK in May, ASUS had better hope for a June launch at the latest.

[Thanks, Thomas C.]

MSI, others to showcase Android-based netbooks at Computex?

It was at the 2008 Computex show in Taipei where we saw the coming-out party for Atom-based netbooks running XP. With any luck, Computex 2009, which begins June 2nd, will usher in the era of the Android-based netbook. That’s where the Economic Daily News claims MSI will “showcase” its Android-based netbook as MSI begins shopping reference designs around to the major PC vendors. Of course, HP, Dell, ASUS, Acer, and others have already been seen experimenting with Android netbooks. XP may be paranoid, but it’s no android.

Sony to finally unveil larger-screen OLED TVs at IFA?

We’ve been waiting for what seems like ages for the next iteration of the XEL-1 to dash in and swoop us off of our feet, but frankly, we’re growing anxious. As the world waits for a commercial-ready OLED TV that’s larger than a standard sheet of paper, industry insiders down at the IFA briefings in Malta this past week believe that Sony could be gearing up to make all sorts of hopes and dreams come true this September. Jens Heithecker, executive director of Messe Berlin, which organizes the IFA trade fair, noted that “IFA is a trade show which is focused more on market-ready technologies,” hinting that anything we see in just a few short months will be prepared for release into the wild. We’re also told that more “ultra-widescreen” 21:9 sets — like Philips’ masterpiece — could be on display, not to mention scores of internet-ready HDTVs and a Samsung set with refresh rates of 400Hz. Needless to say, IFA’s shaping up to be quite a show for the television sector, so you may want to think twice (or thrice, if necessary) about snagging a new panel on August 31st.

Garmin-Asus nüvifone G60 to rock LiMo, launch in 1H 2009

We’ve been waiting on pins and needles for confirmation, but it looks like an all-too-vague Reuters report actually is referring to the Garmin-Asus nüvifone G60. After a senior company official noted that a “Linux-based operating system” would be used in one of its two smartphones, we pinged Garmin directly to cut through the mystery and get down to the meat. What we were told was this: “The Garmin-Asus nüvifone G60 has a proprietary Linux-based OS, and we’re still working towards delivering the nüvifone G60 in the first half of 2009 in limited markets, which haven’t been named yet.” Of course, the tandem is quickly running out in months in that window, so we’re pretty jazzed to be all up on top of an imminent release. Now, if only we knew where those patience pills made off to…

Nokia prepping updated 5800 XpressMusic with capacitive screen?

It’s certainly not unheard of for Nokia to take existing models in its lineup, tweak ’em with slightly improved hardware and software, and re-release them — see the N85 / N86, N93 / N93i, N95 / N96, and so on — so we can totally buy that the company’s hard at work at updating its 5800 for a future revision. DigiTimes (which admittedly doesn’t have a pristine record for nailing these sorts of rumors) cites “sources” with Taiwanese component suppliers as saying that Nokia wants to replace the 5800’s resistive touchscreen with a capacitive one — the S60-based Samsung i8910 does that, by the by — in an effort to better compete with its rivals. That would certainly make the device more usable and responsive, but in all likelihood, this isn’t a simple matter of swapping out a component (how would you use that totally awesome plectrum, after all?) so we’d expect this to be more of an indication that Espoo’s looking to move to capacitive going forward, particularly as it transitions over to the Symbian Foundation’s builds.

Compal producing August-bound ultraportable for Dell?

With the Studio XPS 13 and newfangled Adamo already in its pocket, what other ultraportable does Round Rock really need? That’s a question that Compal seems eager and ready to answer, at least according to Chinese-language Commercial Times. The all-too-scant report mentions that the ultrathin laptop will be based on Intel’s excruciatingly slow (but power-sipping) CULV (consumer ultra low voltage) processor and should start shipping this August. Our best (and only, really) guess as to what Dell’s mystery machine could be? That already planned Mini 11, which we heard earlier this month would be ready between yesterday and Q3.

Another ZuneHD render surfaces, fanboy specs too?

While we broke the news of the ZuneHD to the world as we did the original, we have no way to verify the authenticity of this new image originating at Windows Mobile Power User and now trotting itself around the Intersphere fueled by the adrenaline of fanboy fantasies. We’ve been skeptically going over it pixel-by-pixel (what is that on the back? A camera, a screw-hole?) as this is the notorious period that always follows a product leak when dubious PhotoShops and fanart begins flooding our tips box. Fortunately, Zunited’s sources have stepped up with an assertion that the pic is in fact an authentic ZuneHD. So let’s turn an eye to the specs, the glorious, almost absurdly high-end specs that accompany the picture. Zunited’s sources won’t touch these and we’re keeping them at arm’s length for now under the it’s too-good-to-be-true heading. Click through to see what we mean.

Zune rumors heat up, MS getting ready to launch Zune software on phones?

Yeah, something is definitely up in Zuneland. Not only did images of the Zune HD leak out late last week, today AdWeek says that Microsoft’s auditioning three major ad agencies for the launch of a new mobile service called “Pink” — which is the project codename for Zune software on mobile phones. No, this doesn’t mean any of those Tegra-powered Zunephone rumors are coming true — it’s far more likely that Microsoft is finally gearing up to re-launch Zune as the preferred media software and service for Windows Mobile, a plan Steve Ballmer’s been hinting at for ages now. Remember, Microsoft has to keep its large stable of Windows Mobile hardware manufacturers happy, and launching a hyped new phone of its own with a Zune-based OS would basically be perceived as stabbing a billion-dollar business in the back — not something you want to do when most of your partners are also deep in the Android game. On the other hand, you don’t audition three huge ad agencies just to launch a Zune app on busted ol’ WinMo, so there could be something big cooking — if you forced us to throw caution to the wind and just guess, what we’d want to see is that $500m Danger acquisition pay off in the form of a reskinned consumer-oriented edition of Windows Mobile that integrates Zune services, running not only on a touchscreen Zune HD, but a variety of phones from third-party partners. Wishful thinking? You bet — probably even crazy thinking — but it would certainly shake things up, and that’s never a bad thing. We’ll see how it plays out — care to share your dream Zune strategy in the meantime?

Motorola looking to produce a connected GPS unit?

Motorola’s navigation line certainly isn’t the firms most notable, but the Garmins and TomToms of the world are probably taking notice after an intriguing quote from product line manager Blake Bullock. According to TWICE, Mr. Bullock stated that Moto was “absolutely making a bigger play” in the PND arena. Specifically, he mentioned that it could “bring something new to the table with Motorola’s vast experience in wireless connectivity,” noting that it has “aspirations to combine the best aspects of 3G smartphones with PNDs [to] create optimized experiences for consumers.” ‘Course, we’ve no clue as to when, where and how the company will get its hands dirty with a web-savvy GPS unit, but considering its current state of affairs, we’d say yesterday would be a great time to get things rolling.
