Philips Net TV rumored to go live in April

We’ve been hearing about Philips’ attempt to jump on the burgeoning connected HDTV bandwagon for nearly a year now, but at long last, it seems like the company will finally be making it happen — months after everyone else stole the thunder at CES. At any rate, Pocket-lint has it that the aforesaid outfit is readying its Net TV module — which should be an add-on of some sort that connects via wire to its 8000, 9000 and Cinema 21:9 HDTVs — for an April release. The box will purportedly bring the web’s best content to your HDTV through an easy-to-understand user interface, and the WiFi capability means that you won’t have to run an Ethernet cable to your set. Like most everything Philips does in the HDTV / home entertainment space, we suspect this will also be limited to Europe, but a boy can dream, can’t he?

Supposed Mac Mini 2009 Spy Shot Shows So Many USB Ports

This supposed Mac Mini 2009 spy shot from Macrumors Forum shows the bum-side of the new small-Mac design. What’s new? Besides the aluminum finish, there’s FIVE USB PORTS.

There’s also an Ethernet port, Firewire, Mini DisplayPort and the old style mini DVI Mac display port? Two display ports? That seems odd. In any case, if this is real, it looks quite nice—and you can probably bet it’ll run with at least the new Nvidia 9400 graphics chipset found in the newer MacBook and MacBook Pros. [Macrumors Forum via Apple Insider via 9 to 5 Mac]

Update: Adjusted credit. The image actually wasn’t from Apple Insider, it was from Macrumors’ Forums. Apple Insider just watermarked it for some reason.

Apple Pulls 20-inch Displays–Refresh Coming Soon?

Are you ready for the latest kneejerk Apple rumor? Of course you are. It seems that the company pulled the 20-inch Cinema Display from its store and let retailers know that the hardware could no longer be ordered.

So, what does this mean? A new display, of course! Probably. Mac Rumors speculates that the company is planning to release a new 20-incher featuring the Mini DisplayPort, which it first introduced back in October with a 24-inch model.

p>What’s the theoretical time-frame for such an announcement? How about that rumored press conference next month, when the company will supposedly introduce new versions of the Mac mini, iMac, and Mac Pro?

Lenovo planning to use Ion for larger netbooks?

Who knows what dark, unreliable alleys the Commercial Times prowled to get this information, but the Chinese newspaper says that Lenovo is planning on shipping 11.6-inch and 12.1-inch NVIDIA Ion-based “netbooks” sometime in the future. Given the currently strained relationship between NVIDIA and Intel, it’ll be interesting to see if Intel comes through on its promise to sell Atom chips separately or if that was just the empty PR speak. We’ll see how this plays out — right now all we’ve heard is that Ion will launch on the desktop, so we wouldn’t hold your breath.

Totally rad, red Xbox 360 spied in Toys R Us fine print

Is this for reals? If so… yay! If the above screenshot of a Toys R Us terminal is to be believed, there might be a new, red Xbox 360 Elite on its way to a shelf near you. Details beyond the SKU are pretty scant, but the price is the same as the current Xbox 360 Elite model — $399. We know a certain, fashion-conscious avatar who is going to be really excited if this is true.

Sony Ericsson “Reese” flip QWERTY smartphone leaked?

If the above picture is to be believed, Sony Ericsson‘s looking to release a new swivel-based QWERTY called the “Reese” that boasts one-click access to “your favorite networking sites.” Details beyond this ad are pretty light, and we’re not ruling out the possibility that this might be a fan render (as SE aficionados are fond of). Furthermore, the original poster told forum members at Esato that this device “will not be announced soon,” which makes the appearance of an advertisement even more perplexing. Regardless, we’ll know one way or another soon, as the company is just about to start its MWC press conference… and we’ll be there live.

Samsung dashes hopes for 12 megapixel phone at MWC

Okay, so a recap is definitely in order here. Merely 11 days ago, a flurry of rumors about Samsung’s Mobile World Congress plans filtered out, which just so happened to include word of a 12 megapixel cameraphone. Then, the outfit itself leaked nine new models, giving just a wee bit of credence to the whispers we’d heard. Following that, we even saw a certain UK branch get ahold of one of its flagship models prior to the show, while it casually mentioned that no Android-based phones would be on display. Now, the other most awesome handset (er, rumored handset) is being squashed for a MWC debut, as Telecoms Korea has it that no dozen-megapixel phone is coming to Barcelona. No worries, though — you’ll have plenty to gawk at between the Blue Earth and the Ultra Touch S8300.

Microsoft readies Zune service for non-Zune devices, Marketplace appears in WinMo 6.5 screenshot

We’re just days away from Mobile World Congress where Microsoft is expected to make a few notable announcements. Until then, we have to settle for all the hints and innuendo we can gather as Redmond attempts to win back the hearts, minds, and pocketbooks of consumers infatuated with Android, WebOS, and whatever Apple’s got cookin’. Like these supposed 6.5 screenshots above, this time showing what looks like a Marketplace store a la the Zune. We also have CNET reporting today that Microsoft quietly split its Zune team in two on January 22nd: software and services under Enrique Rodriguez, and hardware under Tom Gibbons who just happens to heads-up hardware design at Microsoft’s Windows Mobile unit. According to Rodriguez, “Zune the service needs to transcend Zune the device” adding, “The goal is to make non-gaming entertainment a first-class citizen within Microsoft’s business.” That includes expanding the Zune service beyond the Zune and onto more devices than just Microsoft’s. Or, “a little further out than just in Redmond,” to quote Rodriguez directly. While he wouldn’t say specifically when it was coming to Windows Mobile, he did say to expect products other than the Zune player to be using the Zune service sometime this year. Now, armed with those Zune-centric WinMo 6.5 screenshots and project Pink leaks, it’s not too much a stretch to expect a Zune-like WinMo experience to be detailed in Barcelona. Besides, isn’t it about time that Danger made good on that estimated $500 million acquisition?

Is this a matte black iPhone? (answer: probably not) Update: more pics

So, this is sort of fun. The leaked photo above appears to be of a new iPhone back — in matte black. Sure, we have to be highly suspicious of all kinds of purported evidence of new products in general, and we’ve heard enough crazy Apple rumors over the years to fill an issue of US Weekly. Regardless, this one’s worth at least considering: it’s got a model number, A1303, that’s previously unseen, but has all the other requisite data, including FCC ID numbers, that we’ve grown to know and love on the back of real, actual, undoctored iPhones. Look, it’s probably fake. Discuss.

Update:
Some more pics have surfaced — check one after the break and the other at MacRumors. Seems a bit early for these sorts of leaks to us, but crazier things have happened.

Nokia N97 designer interview accidentally outs two new Nokia sets?

Sure, the pic looks a wee bit dodgy, but regardless it shows what looks to be two Nokia sets we’ve not seen before. Both of these ape the N97 — which explains how this vid has been circulating since the 29 of January — but the set on the right has had its d-pad moved to the right side of the keyboard and the buttons on the face seem absent. The handset on the left differs as it looks — arguably — thinner than the N97 and the front lip is sporting what appear to be a mini USB port and headset adapters. GSMArena has pointed out a couple sets from Nokia’s leaked roadmap that could fit the bill. The Ivalo (left) has a 3.5-inch touchscreen, 32GB ROM, AGPS, a 5 megapixel camera, WiFi, and rounds out with TV-out and Bluetooth. The Madeleine, if that’s what it is, has a side sliding keyboard, WiFi, Bluetooth, FM Radio,GPS, and a 3.2 megapixel camera. Hopefully the truth is waiting for us in Barcelona, but feel free to peek at the video after the break to keep your spirits up ’til then.
