Nike+ heart rate monitor tipped for June 1 launch

It was hinted at back in September 2009, now it appears certain that Nike will deliver a Nike+ heart rate monitor iPod accessory to the US on June 1st. The following Nike forum post by a long-time contributor and a suspected Nike employee has set heart valves aflutter:

“I have a U.S. launch date for the Nike+ compatible heart rate monitor. It will officially launch on June 1, 2010, although it may reach some retail outlets slightly sooner. It will reach Canadian markets in June and will launch internationally in summer 2010, exact date to be determined.”

We might buy one just to prove that we’re still alive.

Sony rumored to be announcing premium PSN service at E3

We’ve been hearing about a premium PlayStation Network service for some time now — even from Sony’s Kaz Hirai himself — and if a report from VG247 is to be believed, it looks like it could finally become a reality at E3 next month. According to the site, a “highly-placed source” says that Sony will be announcing the service and a slew of new premium PSN features during its June 15th keynote at the show, and that it will cost less than £50 (or $70) per year. As we’d heard previously, the current PSN service would apparently remain as-is for anyone that doesn’t wish to upgrade, but it seems that Sony will be throwing in some pretty big incentives to get folks to pay up — you’ll supposedly get a free PSN game from a choice of “two to four” each month with your subscription. Details on the premium service are otherwise still pretty light, but VG247 says it will include a music streaming service similar to Spotify.

HTC Hero spied with Cox firmware?

We’ve known for some time that Cox — a name traditionally associated with cable television — is on the cusp of turning over its trial CDMA networks in a handful of markets to the public as it marches towards LTE on a swath of 700MHz bandwidth, but what we don’t know is the kind of hardware selection we can expect once these guys go live. Take it for what you will, but it seems that an unbranded CDMA HTC Hero that looks suspiciously like Sprint’s version of the handset has just changed hands on Craigslist, and — you guessed it — it’s got a Cox splash screen when you power it on. Cox’s strategy boss said just last week in an interview with Light Reading Cable that there’d be Android devices in the mix for the launch, but he played coy when pressed on details; the Hero could certainly be on the short list, but doesn’t it seem a little long in the tooth to kick off a brand new network launch? Of course, this could be a hoax or a cobbled-together prototype to help test the trial network, so we’ll just have to hang tight and see how this cookie crumbles; in the meantime, follow the break for the damning video evidence of the Cox Hero in the wild.

Seagate confirms 3TB hard drive for 2010, possible 32-bit OS issues

Seagate has been pushing the areal density envelope for years now, but by and large, these “developments” we hear about typically fade into the cold, harsh winter night without ever amounting to anything tangible. Not so this go ’round, with the company confirming to Thinq (and reaffirmed on our end) that it will be “announcing a 3TB drive later this year.” If you’ll recall, 2TB drives have held the crown for the world’s largest since early 2009, and if all goes to plan, we’ll be able to buy drives 50 percent larger than even those before the dawn of 2011. The company didn’t talk details — we’re still left to envision a price, release date and spindle speed — but it didn’t hesitate to mention a few issues that users with older operating systems may encounter. Essentially, you’ll need to have a rig that’s fully capable of handling the Long LBA (logical block addressing) standard, which means that you’ll need updated drivers, an updated BIOS and either a 64-bit copy of Vista, Windows 7 or “modified version of Linux.” As you’d expect, Windows XP users needn’t pay this platter any mind, and while Seagate is hopeful that industry players will all rally in short order to support the new HDD, there’s still a chance that these growing pains will lead to delays. What we’re most jazzed about here, crazily enough, isn’t the predictable jump in capacity — it’s the fantasies of über-cheap 2TB drives once they fall from the top.

[Thanks, JC]

New, Faster, Unreleased MacBook Shows up in Vietnam

leakbook

Vietnam, previously known for its awesome food and friendly populace, has recently become the go-to country for Apple hardware leaks. And these aren’t your usual, suspicious shaky-cam leaks, either. The photos and video coming out of the Tinhte.com news site are sharp, comprehensive and professional. As iFixit CEO and friend of Gadget Lab Kyle Wiens Tweeted: “Man, these Vietnamese leakers are schooling everyone in the quality photo department.”

After that iPhone 4G video comes the new MacBook. The white plastic unibody MacBook will get a processor speed bump from 2.26GHz to 2.4GHz and the current NVIDIA GeForce 9400M will be replaced with the NVIDIA GeForce 320M, putting it almost on a level with the newly updated aluminum MacBook Pro. It also appears to come with the new fray-free MagSafe connector

The news in this story isn’t that the MacBook is getting an update, but that the whole machine has leaked out in its final, store-ready packaging. What’s going on at Apple? Where’s that famous secrecy? And why is this all happening in Vietnam?

HTC Mondrian with 1.3GHz Snapdragon detailed in leaked Windows Phone 7 ROM?

As expected, the official-looking Windows Phone 7 OS ROM leaked over the weekend is already yielding results. Pictured above is an image extracted from the “oemavatar.cab.” Now that could be a generic Windows Phone 7 image or it could be the HTC Mondrian already seen referenced by the 100MB file. The kids at XDA-Developers have also pieced together specs from an ongoing analysis of the registry and RGU files. So far they’ve spotted references to a 4.3-inch WVGA (480×800) display from Optrex and a 1.3GHz QSD8650A/B Snapdragon from Qualcomm — a chipset, you might recall, supporting multi-mode UMTS and CDMA 3G connectivity. It’s also packing a digital compass but seems to lack a keyboard. Mind you, none of this is absolute but it’s very very intriguing.

[Thanks, Andrew]

Leaked Windows Phone 7 ROM filename suggests an HTC Mondrian?

The lads and lassies at XDA-Developers made an intriguing discovery this week: a leaked 100MB file that might be the first Windows Phone 7 ROM actually destined for a device. What’s more, it could possibly reveal details about a phone we barely knew existed — the filename references an “HTC Mondrian.” At best, the contents might reveal wonders beyond imagination, including full specs, bundled apps, even the tools needed to properly shoehorn WP7 onto your existing HTC handset. At worst, the community might never open the blasted file, or discover it’s all a clever hoax. There’s really no indication either way, so we prefer to dream. If you think you’ve got what it takes, try cracking the ROM yourself (registration required) at our source link.

Apple MacBook refresh leaked in Vietnam (video)

We’re not sure what’s going on in Vietnam these days but it’s suddenly a hot bed for industry leaks. Perhaps it’s due to manufacturers expanding from China to Vietnam’s relatively cheap (but limited) labor pool? Or maybe it’s because the kids at Tinhte are just resourceful as hell? Whatever it is, they’ve just scooped themselves what appears to be an unannounced MacBook update (identifying itself as a MacBook7,1) that includes a faster 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor (up from 2.26GHz) and NVIDIA GeForce 320M graphics with 256MB of DDR3 SDRAM (an update from the GeForce 9400M found in the current MacBook6,1) — right, the same CPU and GPU as the entry level 13-inch MacBook Pro but for only $999 (assuming Apple maintains the same entry-level pricing). These minor bumps aren’t enough to warrant a model change, however, as we’re still seeing “Model No: A1342” stamped on the box. Of course, this could be an elaborate hoax, but Tinhte has an impressive track record and these MacBook specs are right in line with what we’d expect since the white MacBook was last updated in October 2009. No word on when we’ll see these announced but it’s gotta be soon — Tuesday perhaps, with a refreshed MacBook Air if we’re lucky. Video unboxing after the break and plenty of pics for Zaprudering at the source link below.

BlackBerry Bold 9800 slider coming next month as an AT&T exclusive?

We’ve still got thousands of unanswered questions (well, maybe not thousands, but definitely dozens) about RIM’s upcoming BlackBerry 6 platform — and it’s starting to look like we might be answering those questions at retail by way of this Bold 9800 slider that’s been making the rounds lately. BGR claims that the handset is lining up for a mid- to late-June release on AT&T, with the carrier having placed a substantial million-plus unit order to lock it up as an exclusive for some undetermined length of time (much as Verizon has managed to do both with the Storm and the Storm2). We hate to point out the obvious, but from a PR perspective, June’s not the best month to be announcing and / or releasing anything that isn’t an iPhone — and when you look at the 9800’s form factor and the baby steps that BlackBerry 6 seems to make toward boosting consumer appeal, we don’t think you can make an argument that this is a sufficiently different market segment the same way you could with, say, the 9700. In other words: we wouldn’t be shocked to see this date slip a bit, assuming the rumor pans out.

New iPhone in Vietnam spotted running iPhone OS 4? (update: it’s a fake)

This is a bit of a confusing one, but we just got tipped an additional shot of this 4th generation iPhone that leaked out in Vietnam, but this time with a big twist: it appears to be running iPhone OS 4. Or at least displaying a screenshot of the new OS, with that telltale wallpaper in the background. We have no idea how this crew might’ve circumvented Apple’s lockdown of the device, and there’s always the chance this is some sort of Photoshop or other trickery. Still, a source has confirmed to us that the markings “N90 PRO2” indicate an older prototype N90 (the Apple codename for the new iPhone), which refers to “Working Prototype 2” and might possibly be easier to enable than the newer, lock tight model Gizmodo obtained. Also, despite the photo’s out-of-focus nature, the display (or at least its contents) doesn’t appear nearly as sharp as those previous shots we saw of the “fireball” screen. We’re digging for more info as we speak, but unfortunately the original source site, Taoviet, is down right now. We’ll keep you posted if we hear anything else about this image’s origins.

[Thanks, ITKINGDOM]

Update: The source link is loading for us sporadically. The translated text above the shot reads: “Iphone 4G VN is distributed by the network not it? Maybe not then, we’ll be the first use:” It’s all so clear now!

Update 2: Woah, do these things just grow on trees? French site Be Geek has just received photos of what looks to be a third iPhone 4th gen floating around in the wild. Chances are it’s of a similar build generation as the Vietnam device, since it’s lacking those screws at the bottom, but it does seem to a separate device, since it’s rocking a different SIM.

Update 3: Turns out this new set of photos was pulled from the same Vietnamese forum, so it seems to be the same phone. Makes sense, but we’re still puzzling over that different SIM.

Update 4: Sorry, it’s a Photoshop kids. This phone can’t boot past DFU.
