Steve Jobs apparently says original iPhone won’t be upgraded in the future

Now that the iPad is out and iPhone OS 4 has been announced, it looks like Steve Jobs is taking a little time to catch up on his email — in addition to taking up the new SDK rules, it appears he’s very tersely confirmed what we sadly suspected all along: the first-gen iPhone won’t get an upgrade to iPhone OS 4. That makes a certain amount of sense, given that Apple’s subscription accounting model for the original iPhone only booked free upgrades for 24 months, but really, that’s just paperwork — we don’t see why Cupertino couldn’t at least allow for an iPod touch-style paid upgrade, especially since the upgradeable iPhone 3G runs essentially the same hardware. And let’s not forget that first-gen iPhone owners paid more or less full price for their devices, so if this is true, Apple’s summarily dead-ended a $400 phone just under three years after it launched. Of course, none of this is officially confirmed yet, so anything can change — we’ve pinged Apple for comment and they haven’t responded yet, but we’ll let you know what we find out.

[Thanks, Tanzeel]

HTC May Buy Palm to Fight Apple [Rumor]

Moribund Palm is up for sale, says Bloomberg. Who is in the short list of potential bidders? It’s not Google, but close enough: HTC. And it makes total sense, because buying Palm could save HTC’s ass in the Apple lawsuit. More »

Dell Streak / Mini 5 makes a cameo appearance at MTV

It’s been a while since we’ve heard much about the Dell Streak / Mini 5, but it seems like the plus-size phone (or mini-size tablet, whichever you prefer) went on a bit of an undercover media promotion tour last week: Viacom MTV exec Greg Clayman tweeted that it’s “amazing,” while Rob Enderle brought one to the set of John C. Dvorak’s Cranky Geeks and said it would launch for around $300 on contract. What does it all mean? We’re assuming it’s being shown off in an effort to drum up some content partnerships: we’ve already heard about tie-ins with Amazon’s MP3, video, and Kindle stores, and we’d bet that Dell’s also going after newspapers, magazines, and video sites hard in an effort to push back at the iPad — especially since the company is planning to bring out an entire “family of tablets” in the future. Or… it’s nothing at all, and AT&T is going to completely wreck this thing before it launches, like it did with the Aero. Dreams or nightmares, the choice is yours.

Square Motorola Android slider leaks out, causes consternation

We swear we’ve seen a Motorola phone that looks like this odd square thing before, but it’s also possible we’re crazy. Either way, it looks like Moto’s working on a new Blur set running Android 2.1, and if you thought screen size and resolution issues differences were a big part of Android fragmentation before, well, you ain’t seen nothing yet. Oh, and as for the story that this pic came from a student who borrowed the phone from a friend whose dad works for Moto? We’d be more skeptical, except that’s exactly how we’ve gotten other dead-on Moto leaks. So… yeah. Anyway, a square Moto slider running Blur. Does that do anything for anyone? No? Okay.

MacBook Pro updates almost upon us? Screenshot of new model numbers offers hope

It seems silly to give up all expectation for a MacBook Pro refresh. After all, isn’t a spec bump for Apple’s flagship laptops a total inevitability? Still, the arduous wait has begun shake our faith, and we’re happy to see even this sliver of evidence to snap us from our stupor. An internal Microcenter system is listing four new laptops with new part numbers, which, if legitimate, almost certainly harbor new Core i5 and Core i7 processors (maybe even those NVIDIA Optimus graphics if we’re lucky). According to the Microcenter employee who sent this out, a similar thing happened in November with a correct model number and price for the new MacBook. Mac Rumors claims to have been able to receive independent confirmation on the numbers, so we might really have something here. Now, as for a specific launch date, the best we have so far is that April 13th rumor, but with a tips box buzzing with rumors, we’re starting almost feel confident in seeing a new MacBook Pro this century.

[Thanks, Ross W.]

Verizon teasing a Microsoft Pink announcement for Monday?

So Phandroid has scored some internal Verizon rah-rah type material teasing a device announcement on Monday, and they’re thinking it’s the upcoming HTC Incredible — but we’re not so sure. This lines up all too well with Microsoft’s mysterious event in San Francisco, an event that we’ve heard repeatedly from a multitude of respected sources (Paul Thurrott and Ina Fried, to name a couple) would be for Microsoft’s long-rumored Pink handsets, likely for launch on Verizon. Couple that with Verizon’s verbiage here — “it’s new, it’s unique, living exclusively on… Verizon Wireless” — and we kinda think that a device as similar to phones already in the marketplace as the Incredible is doesn’t warrant the hype. Fortunately, we’ll have this all sorted out in less than 72 hours’ time.

[Thanks, Tom]

IPhone OS 4.0 Hints at Front-Facing Camera

wwwtuaw

Barely a day after Apple introduced iPhone OS 4 and made a beta available to developers, details have begun to trickle out about the new multi-tasking operating system. One enterprising reader of The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) ran system monitoring tool iStat on an iPhone running v4 and came up with the screenshot above.

Most of it looks fairly unassuming, but iChat is new, and the folks at TUAW make a huge leap form here, assuming that iChat equals front-facing camera “It seems unlikely that Apple would merely introduce an instant messaging app without support for video conferencing,” they write.

I remain unconvinced. First, why run a chat daemon at all if there is no camera present. Second, iChat is not just a video-conferencing app. And third, who wants it anyway? The iPad could do with a webcam for making Skype calls (although an actual rear-facing camera on the iPad seems plain stupid on such a big device), but the iPhone? Who really wants to video-conference on a tiny screen? It would be a novelty at best.

I may be wrong, but I have a feeling that a front-facing camera is the FM-radio of its day. Every iPod competitor put one in, and everyone thought Apple would eventually include one in the iPod. It took almost ten years to arrive (and you can bet that nobody uses the radio in the Nano). IChat? Sure. iSight? Nah.

Of the 1,500 or so new developer APIs and over 100 new user features mentioned by Steve and Co. yesterday, only a handful were covered in any detail. As usual, Apple was careful not to reveal anything about the next generation iPhone hardware expected to launch this summer. Fortunately we can spelunk the iPhone OS 4 SDK developer preview for hints of what’s to come. TUAW found a new “iChatAgent” process running on OS 4 devices — purpose, unknown — but surely an indicator that Apple’s finally set to launch a mobile iChat app. The fact that Apple hasn’t already is one of those great iPhone / iPad / iPod touch mysteries. We’ve also peeled back the SDK to find evidence supporting those rumors of a front-facing camera (AVCaptureDevicePositionFront), flash (AVCaptureFlashModeOn/Off/auto), and torch/flashlight (AVCaptureTorchModeOn/Off/Auto) all declared in the AVCaptureDevice.h. Who cares, right? Front-facing video cameras have been implemented on a variety of mobile devices for years. Trouble is, how many people actually use them to video conference? And if Apple’s late contribution to copy and paste can be used as a guide for setting expectations (and it can), then we expect Apple’s iChat implementation to be done with the same grace and ease of use — something that should have its carrier partners a bit worried if it’s allowed to function over 3G data.

15-inch MacBook Pros MIA on BestBuy.com, long-awaited refresh really, truly coming April 13th?

iPhone, iPhone, iPhone… wait, what’s that? You’re still pining for those refreshed, possibly Core i5– / i7-equipped MacBook Pros that have been long rumored? If a source close to Australian MacWorld has any merit, we’ll finally be seeing updates to the laptop line — Pro and Air, allegedly — this Tuesday, April 13th. No word on what the new models would feature if true, but without an event all its own, the best we can expect is probably a spec boost. Best Buy seems to be adding some fuel to the fire, first by showing a proverbial mark of death in its database last month, and now by making the 15-inch model unavailable on BestBuy.com. Undoubtedly the retailer’s waiting for a new shipment of potent portables, but the question remains, what will they run under the hood?

[Thanks, Ryan]

Update: UK retailer John Lewis is also showing its MacBook Pro and MacBook Air options as out of stock, though it suffers no such shortages with MacBooks. Draw your own conclusions [Thanks, Ben].
