Apple to announce iAd / AdKit mobile ad platform on Thursday?

Here’s an interesting little rumor that seems all too plausible: Peter Kafka at All Things Digital says sources are telling him Apple will announce a new mobile ad network based on its Quattro Wireless acquisition on Thursday at its iPhone OS 4 event, a report that jibes completely with what we learned about the iAd / AdKit framework present in the iPhone OS just last week. Kafka also says that Google will undoubtedly cheer the move on, since it’s trying to convince the FTC to approve its $750m AdMob acquisition — the presence of a formidable competitor like Apple in the mobile ad space makes the buyout seem more like healthy business and less like “evil monopoly that owns every ad on the internet and is stalking innocents for their flesh with Google Buzz.” Our guess is that Apple will give developers a standard way to place ads in their apps using a new OS service and split the revenue 70/30, just like paid apps in the App Store, but that’s just a shot in the dark — we’ll see what happens on Thursday.

LG LU2300 Android handset gets photos, ‘April or May’ release date?

Actual, honest-to-goodness photos of what is presumably the Korea-only LG LU2300 handset popped up on a site in the SK recently, and like a family pet that plays professional sports (guess who watched Air Bud last night?) it’s certainly captured the imagination of the Android-lovin’ world at large. The thing is said to sport a 3.5-inch (800 x 480) AMOLED capacitive touch screen, Android 2.1, landscape mode slide keyboard, support for DivX files, a 5 megapixel (720p video) camera with geo-tagging, WiFi, GPS, DMB tuner and — last but not least — a 1GHz Snapdragon processor. The stats are consistent with what we’ve heard before, and now we have a possible release date: April or May. What we don’t have, however, is any reason to believe rumors that this is going to be released in the states as the C710 Aloha. Although we might be skeptical, we understand the inherent wish-fulfillment: this is one sexy phone, and we’d certainly like to see it become available here. See another photo for yourself after the break.

HP Slate to cost $549, have 1.6GHz Atom Z530, 5 hour battery?

Well, well — what’s this? We just got our hands on what looks like an internal HP Slate presentation given to cool down some of the iPad hype amongst HP employees, and it just happens to have specs and pricing details on the elusive Windows 7 tablet. As we’d heard, the Slate will run $549 in its base configuration, which has a 8.9-inch 1024 x 600 capacitive multitouch display, a 1.6GHz Atom Z530 processor with UMA graphics and an accelerator for 1080p video playback (we’re assuming it’s a Broadcom Crystal HD chip), 32GB of flash storage and 1GB of non-upgradeable RAM. There’s also a $599 version with 64GB of storage, and both models will have a five-hour battery, an SDHC slot, two camera, a USB port, a SIM card slot for the optional 3G modem, and a dock connector for power, audio, and HDMI out. Of course, what this spec list doesn’t cover is software, and we still haven’t seen much of how HP plans to make Windows 7 on a full slate device with netbook-class internals perform as smoothly or as intuitively as its demo videos. That’s not a small challenge, especially since the iPad is out now and setting some pretty high expectations for how this new breed of tablets should work. We’ve got our fingers crossed — show us something good, HP.

Nokia Vasco viral video ready, N8 flagship too?

If you already believe the rumors that “Vasco” is the codename for Nokia’s unannounced N8 flagship and that the N8 is the device pictured above then lean in, we’ve got a bit of news for you. A viral video for the “Nokia Vasco” has just wrapped according to cameraman Danny Gagatt’s tweet above. That sets the expectation then, that the launch of what everyone expects to be Nokia’s first Symbian^3 device is just around the corner. Plausible since Gagatt’s slip (since removed) tips The Mill — the same visual effects company used by Nokia for the N900 nuthouse job. Besides, it’s almost mid-April so we expect things to get official right quick.

Is Intrinsity Apple’s latest chipmaker acquisition?

This one’s still strictly in the realm of rumor for the time being, but there’s a growing amount evidence cropping up suggesting that Apple may have acquired another processor design firm. The company in question this time is Austin-based Intrinsity, which specializes in ARM processors, and has suddenly seen its website replaced with an old school “under construction” image — supposedly due to “scheduled maintenance.” That wouldn’t be much to go on by itself, of course, but EDN is reporting that it has a “solid rumor” that Intrinsity has indeed been sold, and a number of Intrinsity employees have apparently already changed their current employer status on LinkedIn to Apple only to promptly change it back. There’s even some speculation that Intrinsity may have actually contributed as much or more to the A4 processor in the iPad than P.A. Semi has, although any confirmation of that will likely have to wait until an official announcement — if there’s one to come at all, that is.

iPad OS digging reveals hints of future iPhone, iPod touch, iPad and Nessie

Well, well — what have we here? A little digging into the mainframe that lies beneath Apple’s freshly launched iPad has uncovered a few telltale signs of next-generation hardware, and while this is obviously in no way confirmation that new wares are on the way from Cupertino, this kind of stuff has led to similar reveals in the past. If we’re seeing this right, we’re looking at not one, but two new mentions of future iPhones (iPhone 3,2 and iPhone 3,3), alongside a new iPod touch (iPod 4,1) and… a future iPad (iProd 4,1). ‘Course, none of this gives us any indication of the all-important whos or whens, but at least this confirms that mythical creatures still exist in the hearts of those who believe.

Intel putting some ultra-thin laptop CPUs on hold to gauge demand?

Rumors of Intel delaying processors to avoid stepping on some of its other processors’ toes? Stop us if you’ve heard this one before. This latest instance concerns some unspecified ultra-thin laptop CPUs that Intel has reportedly now put on hold until the third quarter of the year and, according to DigiTimes, a launch then will still depend on what demand looks like at that point. All of this is supposedly at least due in part to Acer’s decision to shelve some of its ultra-thin laptops that would have used the processors, and instead focus on thin-and-light Calpella-based laptops. No word from Intel, of course, but past history suggests we could see some further back and forth before things finally shake out.

Nintendo 3DS to feature 3.4-inch Sharp parallax barrier display?

There aren’t many mass production options on the market when it comes to glasses-less 3D displays for Nintendo’s forthcoming 3DS handheld gaming console. And according to early leaks from Japan, the special Nintendo 3DS display is supposedly built by Hitachi and Sharp using a parallax barrier system. So guess where this new 3.4-inch, 480 x 854 pixel display is likely headed? While Sharp doesn’t say for sure, it’s a good bet that this parallax barrier 3D LCD will be fronting the user interface on the 3DS. Unlike the 3D displays you’ll find in modern 3D HDTVs requiring the viewer to wear active or passive glasses, Sharp’s display uses a parallax barrier system to create a sense of depth by using a series of vertical slits in an ordinary LCD to direct light to the right and left eyes. The panel offers a 500nit brightness, 1,000:1 contrast, and is available with or without a touchscreen. A non-touchscreen version of the display goes into mass production before June but there’s no specific mention of the touchscreen timeline (but we imagine it won’t be far behind). In other words, we could have a Nintendo 3DS on the market before the holidays. Just saying. Guess we’ll find out for sure at E3 in June.

Update: Akihabara News went eyes-on with the display and came away impressed with the colors and brightness. Better yet, it says, “Sharp succeed to do what Sony and Panasonic does with 3D Glasses!” Well, that sounds hopeful.

Tegra 2 delay rumor makes the rounds, NVIDIA says ‘everything’s on track’

We bumped into NVIDIA at CTIA in Vegas last week, and even NVIDIA itself expressed some frustration at not having any finished Tegra 2-powered products to show us, but there was no talk of delays — not that we really have many hard dates for any of the Tegra 2 devices to push up against. This morning, however, SlashGear ran a rumor from a “trusted source” saying that there were hardware and software “technical problems” with the platform, including a problem with Flash, which were delaying various tablets, including products from Notion Ink, Compal, and ICD. The source said that the Compal, which was due for a June release, has been bumped to September, while the ICD tablets won’t hit until October. We asked NVIDIA for a statement, and they said that “The rumors aren’t true. Everything’s on track.” With that sort of terse reply, we’re not really sure which aspects of this rumor NVIDIA is rebutting, but we have to assume NVIDIA is at least saying that there aren’t issues with Tegra 2 that are holding things back. As for when we’ll see Tegra 2 tablets and smartbooks hit the market? That’s anyone’s guess.

Netflix streaming, ABC, and 1,348 more iPad approved apps revealed

Look, we’re not sure what appadvice is using to back its claims, but it’s been pumping out supposed iPad app leaks for a few weeks now with screenshots and videos that tell a convincing story. Now they’ve linked us to a host of new iPad apps with Netflix and ABC player being two of the most notable. The free Neflix app is said to be launching along side Apple’s slate on April 3rd letting Netflix subscribers browse and manage their queues. More importantly, it will also allow subscribers to stream Netflix’s online collection of videos. Of course, if this is true then we expect to see a Netflix app land for the iPhone and iPod touch as well in adherence to Reed Hastings’ previous comments.

There’s also a free ABC app tipped for April 3rd giving iPad owners WiFi access to full episodes of shows like Lost and Grey’s Anatomy. And with CBS seemingly getting into the HTML5 game we suspect that the demand for Hulu in the US will dampen if all this comes to fruition — especially if Hulu adopts a subscription model. Not enough? Then check out the 1,350 (and counting) approved iPad apps in the source link below or preview 700 of them in a video after the break where you’ll also catch a few more Netflix and ABC screenies. We’ll have to wait until Saturday to see how many of these actually appear in the iTunes App Store.

Update: Looks like these apps are coming straight from Apple’s app database since AppShopper is also showing Netflix and ABC Player iPad apps. Don’t believe it? Then why not grab some screenshots of your own direct from Apple’s servers. This is legit folks.

[Thanks, Sean M.]
