Mysterious HTC Android phone spied, might lean the way of the Dragon

In an almost perfect world, this spy shot would be of the rumored HTC Dragon, reminiscent of the HD2 with a 1GHz Snapdragon processor and packing the latest version of Android / Sense UI — in a more perfect world, this would all have been confirmed last week and in our hands today delivered via unicorn express, but that’s obviously not happening. Still, there’s something new and exciting about this device, but we’re grasping at straws beyond the handful of pics The Unlockr managed to obtain, several more of which can found just beyond the read link.

T-Mobile’s Project Dark includes option for buying phones in monthly installments?

Still no confirmation on any all-you-can-eat data plans, but Boy Genius Report has some convincing screens that seem to reveal some other precepts of T-Mobile’s enigmatic (and purportedly company-saving) Project Dark. Two new plans have emerged, Even More and Even More Plus. The former is the traditional two-year contract, along with options to do data only and get a subsidized phone. Even More Plus doesn’t require a contract, going month-to-monthly instead, and subsequently the phone is full price. However, what’s gonna be interesting to see is the FlexPay option, which allows you to pay for a device in monthly installments instead of upfront, a plan we’ve seen before in markets like Germany and Japan. In the example above, a $400 G1 on the non-contractual Even More Plus plan is divvied out to an initial $170 payment and 19 subsequent installments of $12.10, or $33.33 over three months after the related upfront cost. It’s no game-changer on its own, but it’s certainly an intriguing prospect that’s gonna make some (initially) cash-strapped individuals very happy to be able to walk out with a decent Android device.

In-App Sales and iTablet: The Killer Combo to Save Publishing?

Apple on Thursday made a subtle-yet-major revision to its App Store policy, enabling extra content to be sold through free iPhone apps. It’s a move that immediately impacts the publishing industry, and it could pay even bigger dividends if the Cupertino, California, company indeed delivers its highly anticipated touchscreen tablet.


While the most obvious beneficiaries would be app developers, a market segment that can also benefit from the new in-app commerce model are people and companies that create content and need to set up shop in a way that doesn’t, in effect, charge someone for just walking in — like media publishers.

Newspapers and magazines are reportedly in talks with Apple about repurposing their content onto a “new device,” presumably the rumored touchscreen tablet Apple will deliver in early 2010. Numerous reports suggest an Apple tablet would have a strong focus on redefining print media. Enabling in-app commerce through free apps was a crucial move to help make this goal a reality.

Apple’s earlier in-app sales model wasn’t ideal for publishers. Previously, in-app commerce was a feature exclusive to paid apps; free apps were not permitted to sell content. Newspapers and magazines already struggle to sway readers to pay for content to begin with, and charging for apps cuts off potential customers. By allowing commerce within free apps, Apple creates the opportunity for a free media app to serve as a gateway for readers to get hooked on a newspaper’s or magazine’s content, which could help lure them into paying for exclusive premium content.

CNN is an exception: Its recently-released iPhone app costs $2. The Wall Street Journal will later this month begin charging for most of the content it delivers through its free app, and the Financial Times has an app that only offers up to 10 free stories a month without a subscription to the newspaper. But for the most part, publishers have loathed charging for an app, even if it then enabled them to try to charge for content within that point of sale. Reducing the cost barrier of that business model to zero changes things considerably. At least one small publisher, Scarab Magazine, has already taken advantage of the change.

Picture a free magazine app that offers one sample issue and the ability to purchase future issues afterward. Or a newspaper app that only displays text articles with pictures, but paying a fee within the app unlocks an entire new digital experience packed with music and video. This is an example of the “freemium” model that Wired magazine’s Chris Anderson explains in his book Free. It’s a model that some publishers, including Wired’s parent company Condé Nast, are already experimenting with on their websites. (Our sister publication Ars Technica, for example, offers its general content for free, as well as a “Premier” subscription option for readers to access exclusive content.)

If Apple does indeed deliver a tablet, the key for publishers is to create a convenient experience that readers will pay for, as opposed to the content itself. A free app would be the first step toward offering that experience. (And then the publisher will have to figure out what to do about ads, but let’s not get too ahead of ourselves.)

It’s plausible to imagine that a freemium strategy would be much more effective through a tablet app than a website. If the tablet is indeed designed like a 10-inch iPod Touch or iPhone, as insiders have described it, then publishers developing apps will be able to take advantage of features such as the accelerometer, GPS, live video streaming and multitouch to innovate the way they engage with their audience — and, ultimately, persuade them to pay.

Only now is the relevance of a touchscreen tablet becoming more clear. Scores of tablet devices have come and gone in years past, and many analysts and tech enthusiasts wondered why Apple would enter what is considered a failed product category. Clearly, Apple sees a gaping hole — the publishing industry’s lack of vision for a working digital model — and a touchscreen tablet, combined with the App Store and this new in-app sales model, would seek to fill it.

What’s in it for Apple? Primarily, squashing Amazon’s Kindle. Who would wish to read a digital newspaper or magazine on the Kindle’s drab e-ink screen if Apple delivers a multimedia-centric tablet? Wired’s Steven Levy shares my view in his assessment of the Kindle’s newspaper experience: “[The Kindle DX’s] plodding menu-based interface still made navigating newspapers difficult, and the rich graphic quality that makes magazines such an indulgence is totally missing. Even the flashiest print publication looks like The New England Journal of Medicine.”

Can Apple redefine print media to save the publishing industry? It probably has a higher chance than any other tech company out there. Apple is a market-shaper, and that’s the kind of a company the publishing industry needs to resuscitate it as the traditional advertising model continues to collapse. Daily Beast editor Tina Brown believes that, thanks to the powers of the internet and technology, we’re entering the “golden age” of journalism in the next three years. Perhaps Apple’s tablet will be a crucial part of it.

Rumor: Six-Core Mac Pro Lands 2010

Rumor has it that Apple’s next-generation Mac Pro will feature Intel’s elite desktop chip codenamed Gulftown, according to a blog.

Recently demonstrated by Intel, Gulftown is a six-core, dual-socket processor with 12 threads. (In normal human speak, it’s essentially a processor with six brains, capable of efficiently distributing power to execute 12 concurrent tasks.) Apple blog Hardmac claims receiving a tip that the Gulftown-equipped Mac Pro could arrive early 2010.

A highly threadable processor such as Gulftown would be most useful for prosumer applications, such as video editing and encoding. Apple’s latest operating system Snow Leopard was specially designed for efficient multithread processing.

Therefore, for regular consumers who don’t use their Macs for very processor-heavy tasks, this rumor about Gulftown won’t sound all that exciting. But inevitable price cuts for current Mac Pros, which carry quad-core processors, might be something to look forward to.

Rumor: Apple To Switch On Sleeping FM Radio in iPhone, iPod Touch

Rumor site 9to5Mac reports that Apple is on the cusp of releasing an FM radio application for the iPhone and iPod Touch. And get this: it will be for the current models, not for some new hardware revision. According to the rumor, Apple will awaken the slumbering FM transceiver already dormant within the devices, currently only used to talk to the Nike+ widget.


This speculation seems to fit in with Apple’s switching on of the Bluetooth functionality inside the second-gen iPod Touch with the 3.0 software update, but the rumor then gets a little weird:

The holdup on this app is that Apple is trying to integrate the Mobile iTunes Store purchases into the functionality of the program.

Yes. Apple, which has already managed to put tune-tagging into the iPod Nano, is apparently having trouble doing it with the way-more-powerful iPhone platform. This sounds like nonsense, but it doesn’t mean we won’t see a radio app. What great news. Now there will be, along with the stocks application, yet another app that I will never use yet cannot remove from my iPod.

iPhone and iPod touch radio app with iTunes store integration on the horizon?

We know what you’re thinking, how dare that new iPod nano have features your premium iPhone and iPod touch handhelds don’t? Well, if this 9 to 5 Mac rumor has any merit, Apple is right there with you and has a solution in the works. According to said whispers, a Radio app is in the works to capitalize on the recent models’ latent FM tuner. It’ll either be standalone or integrated into the iPod app, and either way it’ll be able to work in the background while you browse other, not so fortunate apps. The apparent cause for delay is work on a feature that’ll identify the songs and link you to the appropriate iTunes page for purchase. As always, this is just a rumor, so do yourself a favor and try not to dwell on it too much, k?

Android rumor rodeo, starring Sprint’s first 4G phone, a delayed Eclair, INQ Mobile’s 2010 handset, and more

The gang at Android and Me seemed to have made quite a number of acquaintances on their sojourn through CTIA and MotoDev Summit. Specifically, there were three people along the way they reportedly talked to that led to the most tantalizing of rumors. First down the rabbit hole is a Sprint developer who claimed the first 4G (i.e. WiMAX) phone will be an Android device, which honestly wouldn’t be all that shocking given the company’s love for and recent history with the OS. Next up is a Samsung exec that intimated we shouldn’t expect Android 2.0 “Eclair” until Q2 2010 — interesting in its own right, but looks like those whispers of Sholes launching with anything beyond Donut isn’t gonna come to fruition now. Our third definitive individual is an INQ head employee who let slip its handsets would be finding its way onto a US carrier’s network in 2010 and would have a “pimped out” customized Android skin chock full of social networking the likes of Spotify, Skype, Facebook, etc. The rest of its report is much ado about nothing — no LG android phone this year, no TomTom app this year, and no standalone Google Maps navigation software. Yeah, that’s quite a number of Android rumors to digest, and unfortunately nothing definitive. Looking forward to the future?

Latest Rumors Point to New Macs on the Horizon

Product rumors have been fairly quiet on the Apple front recently, but the tech community has begun exchanging whispers about new Macs due in stores soon.


While the world waits for Apple to deliver its highly anticipated touchscreen tablet in early 2010, the nearer future most likely holds upgraded iMacs, Mac Minis, MacBooks and perhaps a new multitouch mouse.

Here, we round up all the Mac-related rumors that have surfaced in the past month and rate their probability. Eager to buy a new Mac? Wait a little longer: Any Tuesday now (Apple traditionally rolls out product upgrades on Tuesdays), you’ll most likely see a slew of brand new Macs in the Apple Store.

Thinner, groovier iMacs
On average, Apple refreshes its iMacs every seven months, and the last batch of iMacs were released in March. History suggests that new iMacs should arrive any day now.

What’s new about them? Financial publication Barron’s cites research firm Wedge Partners, who claims the new iMacs will sport a “thinner, organic design, likely with smoothed or rounded edges.” That’s reasonable to believe: The current aluminum form factor hasn’t been changed for about two years. The previous white iMac lasted two years before receiving the aluminum makeover. So a new design for the next iMac would make sense. Also, a thinner, rounder design upgrade would be consistent with the look of the new aluminum MacBook Pros.

Corroborating the claim of thinner iMacs, a purported foreign Apple advertisement for a new iMac emerged on Google.nl, stating “iMac: Ultra Thin 20 & 24 inch models. From only €1099. Apple Store.”

As for the new iMac’s innards, there have been conflicting reports claiming the iMacs will feature a quad-core processor, an upgrade from their current dual-core brains, while other publications claim the iMac will continue using dual-cores. We’re undecided on who’s right, but what’s obvious is the new iMacs should be speedier in performance. French blog Mac4Ever claims the new iMacs will include SD card readers, just like those featured in the MacBook Pros. Apple does enjoy consistency across its product lines, so that sounds plausible.

Multitouch mouse
The iMac is rumored to be shipping with an extra bonus: a new multitouch mouse, which will presumably sport a touch-sensitive housing to do away with the roller ball on the current Mighty Mouse. Sources told AppleInsider that the new mouse would apply the multipoint touch detection technology seen in the iPhone and the iPod Touch.

A new iMac is the perfect opportunity for Apple to roll out a new mouse. Wired.com believes a multitouch mouse should function similarly to the unibody MacBook trackpads, which detect multitouch gestures. On new MacBooks, tapping the trackpad with two fingers triggers a right-click function, for example; this rumored multitouch mouse might copy this behavior. Also, for a mouse, we would expect a multitouch gesture to replace scrolling in different directions, and perhaps there will be special gestures that trigger Exposé commands as well.

New White MacBooks
Remember the MacBook? You know, that lone white notebook in the Mac family. Rumors say the MacBook will soon receive a design overhaul and be joined by additional models. Not much is known, other than that the new MacBooks will reportedly be thinner and lighter, and the internal architecture will be reworked. Financial blog Barron’s cites research firm Wedge Partners, who claims the MacBook redesign “is likely to be limited.” That’s vague, but we think many of us would consider thinner and lighter to be a “limited” redesign (i.e., not mindblowingly exciting).

Several reports say the new MacBook will be released simultaneously with the new iMac. The MacBook was also alluded to in the purported Apple advertisement that may have been accidentally leaked: “MacBook: Thinner, lighter and faster! Free delivery. Order today.”

Of course we believe new MacBooks are imminent: Apple would not neglect its most affordable notebook, which has been a hot seller, especially among students.

Mac Mini

Last and definitely least, there have been scarce rumors about a new Mac Mini also launching with the iMac and MacBook. Apple’s treatment toward the Mac Mini has been inconsistent with its other products: The company waited 600 days before releasing the current Mac Mini, and the upgrade was only minor; it introduced no changes to form factor. Mac Mini customer feedback suggests the device is being used for niche applications including cheap server setups, digital music servers for audiophiles and replacements for Windows PCs.

We’d guess Apple will deliver another mini upgrade for the Mac Mini, perhaps increasing its storage and adding a slight bump to performance. The purported Apple ad also includes the Mac Mini, suggesting it will drop in price: “Faster and more affordable than ever. From only €499. Order immediately.” A price drop is believable: It suggests the Mac Mini isn’t a big seller, which we would expect, and if that’s the case, we wouldn’t expect a significant upgrade.

Verizon iPhone? Don’t Hold Your Breath

With plenty of heat on AT&T this past year, hopes have been running high for Apple to share its iPhone with Verizon. However, an analyst does not foresee a Verizon iPhone arriving anytime soon.

That’s because Verizon recently announced a partnership with Google to offer two new Google Android-powered handsets this year. That would suggest Verizon’s near-term direction is with Android, said Scott Ellison, an IDC analyst, in a ComputerWorld article.

Ellison added that there’s no sign Apple is ready to share its iPhone with another carrier. Also, three IDC analysts said Verizon probably won’t receive the iPhone until it converts to its fourth-generation Long Term Evolution (LTE) network.

Several months ago, some analysts speculated the iPhone would be shared with the Verizon network by 2010. Many sources have claimed AT&T’s exclusive contract with Apple ends next year, though this remains unconfirmed. Verizon CEO Ivan Seidenberg told The Wall Street Journal that Apple is more likely to bring the iPhone to Verizon once the telecom company deploys its LTE network. He explained the majority of the wireless industry plans to transition to LTE in the next few years, and it would then make sense for Apple to bring Verizon on board. Verizon has said it is rolling out LTE next year.

Of course, cellular networks take several years to deploy and optimize, so we didn’t believe Verizon would get the iPhone as soon as it began rolling out LTE. Thus, IDC’s reasoning is plausible. Meanwhile, iPhone owners disgruntled with AT&T, or Verizon customers eagerly awaiting the iPhone to land on their network, can keep wishing for the day Apple ends its exclusive relationship with AT&T.

Dell bringing Mini 3i Android set to AT&T?

Dell, Android, and AT&T have been mentioned in an awful lot of whispered sentences over the past few months, so today’s Wall Street Journal report on a Round Rock-sourced Android set for Ma Bell isn’t exactly a huge surprise. Apparently Dell’s making some tweaks to the Chinese-market Mini 3i in preparation for a 2010 Stateside launch — obviously the China Mobile-specific OPhone build would have to go away in favor of full-flavored Android, and we’d bet that WiFi and a nicer camera make their way into the casing as well. That’s really all we know for now, but we’re sure Dell’s soon to hold an 8AM event where some random exec will pull it out of his pocket for 10 seconds before putting it away and announcing Inspiron laptops can now be ordered with giant Affliction dragon logos painted on them. You just keep doing what you do, Dell.
