Apple about to unveil refreshed plastic MacBooks?

The white plastic MacBook has been looking pretty lonely at the bottom of Apple’s lineup ever since all the unibodies went Pro, but we’d been hearing Apple had some grand plans for the low-end — and now AppleInsider says revised MacBooks in a thinner, sleeker shell have hit manufacturing and could launch “in the coming weeks” alongside that rumored iMac refresh. AI also says there are hints at a new-school integrated battery and a white plastic case, but we’ll see what happens — anyone think Apple might cut prices below $999?

Nikon D3s with 1080p video rumored for release next month

This sort of burst out of nowhere today, but word is that a new Nikon D3s will hit on October 15 — the crew at NikonRumors puts it at “99 percent probability.” The D3s is expected to add 1080p video and an 14fps burst mode to the D3, as well as a 1.6x crop mode, but other than that we don’t know too much. We’ll keep you updated, it looks like the leaks are coming fast and furious.

Rumor: Microsoft Poaching Apple Retail Employees

microsoftstore

Recently we learned (via documents leaked to Gizmodo) that Microsoft is modeling its soon-to-come retail stores after Apple’s — installing a “Guru Bar” to copy the Apple Genius service station. But why stop there? The latest rumor is that the software giant has been poaching Apple retail managers, enticing them with big raises and perks to cross over to the Microsoft side.

Sources told The Loop’s Jim Dalrymple that Microsoft is also offering to cover moving expenses for poached managers who must relocate. And once hired, the ex-Apple managers are contacting the top sales people of their respective Apple locations to poach them with higher salaries, too.

This sounds like something Microsoft would do, but will hiring Apple retail employees really help sell more Microsoft products, such as the Zune (which only has 1.1 percent of the MP3 player marketshare)? Perhaps it will, but most likely in a very insignificant way.

Rumor: Microsoft Readies Touchscreen Tablet

surface
It’s looking more and more likely that 2010 will be the year of the tablet. Add Microsoft to the list of tech giants rumored to be developing a touchscreen tablet, along with two touchscreen phones to compete with the iPhone.

ZDNet’s Mary Jo Foley claims receiving tips that Microsoft is developing a touchscreen tablet featuring technologies used in its Surface touchscreen table. She tacks on a rumor about Pink, a “Microsoft-branded (but not Microsoft-manufactured) phone,” with a January 2010 launch date. No indications when, exactly, a Microsoft Surface-powered tablet would emerge. Perhaps next year as well?

“I wouldn’t be surprised if Microsoft is waiting for Apple to show its tablet hand before trotting out its revamped tablet,” Jo Foley writes.

ZDNet’s details on the devices are scarce, but more interesting is the mounting evidence suggesting tablets will be a buzzing product category next year. In August, Wired.com received tips that Dell and Intel are collaborating on a touchscreen tablet due for release next year. Also, an analyst told Wired.com he’s heard Nokia and HTC are working on tablets as well. And of course, there has been a plethora of reports citing sources who claim Apple will deliver a touchscreen tablet in 2010.

On top of these hints, market research firm Display Search now projects the touchscreen market will triple in the next few years, from $3.6 billion to $9 billion. The iPhone played a significant role in driving touchscreen technology into the mainstream, analysts told Wired.com.

Of course, just because tablets are likely to be trendy among manufacturers in 2010 doesn’t mean they’ll be hot sellers. We’ll have to wait a little longer to learn more about how these new tablets will differ from the scores that have come and gone in years past.

Pentax K-X DSLR pictures and specs leaked?

Playing coy as to which site was culpable, Photo Rumors claims it managed to nab from some page a handful of pictures and specs of a new Pentax K-X DSLR, reportedly set to launch tomorrow. Highlights include a 12.4 megapixel CMOS image sensor with stabilization, 720p / 24 frames per second HD video recording, a 2.7-inch LCD screen, and ISO sensitivity ranging from 100 to 12,800. Consider our interest piqued, but unfortunately we’ve got no indication when this will see the official light of day — but with press photos propagating somewhere, we’re hoping the waiting isn’t too much longer.

250GB PlayStation 3 slim Uncharted 2 bundle leaked?

Well, what do we have here? No sooner do we get a 250GB Xbox 360 on the horizon does this image land in our tip box, showing a PlayStation 3 slim bundle for Uncharted 2 that just so happens to have that 250GB hard drive we spotted in the FCC last month. We’ve been able to independently confirm that it’s legit, but beyond that we’ve got no clue when it’ll be announced or any price / release date information. We wouldn’t be surprised to see this hit stores in mid-October alongside Uncharted 2, but that’s just a guess on our part. With any luck, SCE exec Kaz Hirai will be shedding some light at his Tokyo Game Show keynote next week — c’mon Sony, don’t keep us in the dark too long.

Update: Joystiq points us to this rumor from last week that Uncharted 2, Assassin’s Creed II, and Gran Turismo 5 bundles are possibly slated for the UK in October for £299 ($494), just £50 more than the current 120GB model.

Update 2: We just got off the line with SCEA, who has denied the photo and told us quite plainly that there’s no bundles being planned for America, but that the rep can’t speak for other regions (e.g. Europe, Japan) — not surprising, of course, you can’t believe everything you read on the internet, right?

Apple tablet rumors strike back: 9.6-inch with HSDPA and P.A. Semi processor coming February 2010?

Now that all that iPod mess is over and done with, looks like it’s as good of time as any to return to the world of Apple tablet rumors. A report from Taiwan Economic News starts us off right, with “industry sources” telling the outlet it’ll have a 9.6-inch multitouch screen, built-in HSDPA (so much for Verizon), a P. A. Semi processor, a “long lasting battery pack,” and a $799 to $999 price tag. Most to all of that sounds fairly familiar, but coming along with it is a new timeline: shipments will reportedly be delivered to Apple this December in preparation for a launch in February 2010. As for component providers, Taiwanese company DynaPack will reportedly be the exclusive supplier of battery packs, as much as 300,000 per month, while iPhone screen-maker Wintek will be doing the display duties here, too. The author in question here does appear to have some manufacturing sources — it looks like he was right about the Acer Timeline — but at this point, we’re not ready to believe anything without some photographic evidence of Steve Jobs personally adding the magical unicorn tears.

Time looking to kick out the e-readers after all?

Hey — this one makes sense, so we shouldn’t be too surprised, but it turns out that Time, Inc. is seriously looking into getting into the e-reader business, according to a leaked presentation from June of this year. The slides, which are entitled “New Platforms & Business Models for Publishers,” also contained notes which had been updated as late as this past August, indicating that Time has plans to launch a product as soon as the end of this year. Though Time had said back in March that it had “no interest” in getting into the e-reader biz, it’s not terribly shocking to hear that they were either fibbing or changed their minds, considering how the market’s been heating up lately, combined with the deaths of many, many print mags. NBC contacted Dawn Bridges — a spokesperson for Time — about the story, who said the company is “speaking with a number of hardware and software companies as well as other content companies about various projects.” Vague enough for you?

Possible Photos of New iPods Nano and Touch

ipodtouchg3_520x405

Leaked case designs have hinted at the presence of cameras in the new iPods expected later today, but until now that’s all they’ve been — cases. If genuine (and this close to launch, it certainly could be), this photo of Nano and Touch cases from Cygnette could actually contain the new iPods around which the cases are wrapped.

LIVE COVERAGE

Follow Apple’s iPod announcements today with Gadget Lab’s live, up-to-the-minute coverage from the Apple press conference, starting at 10am Pacific / 1pm Eastern.

The Touch appears to have a lens on the back, surrounded by the same shiny-steel case of the current model, and above the volume rocker-switch is another, new, button. Dedicated shutter release? Hold button in a new position? If this is an iPod Touch, it also seems to have inherited the iPhone’s front-facing earpiece, and the screen is displaying the first-generation Touch’s icons and dock (no mail, and no dots at the bottom to indicate further screens).

And the Nano (below)? Not much there. The screen looks a little taller, but there’s no view of the back. Only a few hours left before we find out, but we have a feeling that these images have been photoshopped together from older iPhone and iPod product shots by Cygnette itself.

The Beatles finally coming to iTunes, according to Yoko Ono (update: EMI says not tomorrow)

Even more than in past years, the build-up to Apple’s iPod event this Wednesday has been nothing if not a bevy of The Beatles / iTunes rumors — the company even broke with its traditional Tuesday event date to have it instead on “09-09-09,” the same day The Beatles Rock Band and a new box set are due to hit store shelves. Now it looks like we’ve heard it from none other than Yoko Ono herself, who in a now-pulled Sky News article confirmed that the Fab Four’s headed for digital distribution. All that’s left of the piece is a Google cache of the first sentence, so for the full skinny, it looks like we’ll have to wait until tomorrow.

Update: EMI is telling Financial Times that, while conversations are still going on, no announcements will be made tomorrow.
