Dell smartphone rumors flare up — Android or S60 phone in the works?

So rumors of Dell doing a smartphone have been around forever, but they’ve started heating up again today — word on the street is that the company is planning a handset launch as early as next month at 3GSM or Mobile World Congress. That’s just chatter we’d ordinarily dismiss as nonsense, but we couldn’t help but notice most of the Dell people at the Adamo event were carrying G1s — and Dell’s director of consumer products was super-quick to pull out a Nokia E71 and gush over how well-built it was compared to other devices when we asked him where the Adamo line would be positioned. That jibes with long-standing rumors that Dell’s working on Android and/or S60 devices — rumors that Michael Dell himself refused to put to bed back in July. What does it all mean? Well, we have no idea, but we’d say that Dell’s new focus on consumer-oriented design suggests that WinMo isn’t really in the running if it is in fact planning a handset. We’ll see how it plays out over the next few months — we could be right, we could be wrong, but either way it should be interesting.

Rumor Recycle: iPhone Nano Now Pegged for June

Nanoshop
You know the saying "If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again"? It now applies to Apple rumors.

Either disappointed by the lackluster Macworld Expo keynote, or just plain lazy, China’s Economic Daily News is recycling the iPhone Nano rumors which were swirling around like a Quidditch Snitch at the end of last year.

According to the newspaper, two Chinese chip makers are lined up to receive orders from Apple: Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company and United Microelectronics Corporation. The story goes that the orders will be placed in March and the iPhone Nano will ship in June.

This is either wrong or just plain dumb for a few reasons. Apple likes its secrets, and if these contracts aren’t signed yet, leaking them ahead of time is a sure way to make certain they’ll never be signed.

We’re not discounting an iPhone Nano, and to be sure Apple is a lot more leaky than it used to be, but this report just doesn’t sound right — it smacks to much of recycling.

Macworld ’09: a show of no-shows

With Phil doing the honors, nobody really thought Apple was planning on revolutionizing anything this morning — sure, there were plenty of rumors, like always, but most people weren’t expecting the moon. What we were expecting, however, was for Apple to come clean on a few things, so bear with us as we file this missing persons report.

Notably absent:

  • Push notifications. This was supposed to roll out in September and is sorely needed.
  • Snow Leopard. Last June Apple said the OS was due in “about a year,” so we would expect to start hearing a bit more about it — or at least notification of a delay.

Woulda been nice:

Dodged a bullet (for now):

  • iPhone nano. Our hands aren’t getting any smaller, and this SimCity isn’t gonna get plumbing all on its own.
  • iTablet. Sure, it’s been every Newton-head’s dream since forever, but that doesn’t mean the market for a UMPC-ish iPod touch-like device is there just yet.

Yeah, Apple doesn’t have to do anything — in fact, that yearly grind of expectation is probably one of the reasons the company is bowing out of Macworld altogether — but would it really be too much trouble to at least drop some verbaige on some of this stuff? Just wondering, is all. Oh, and in case you’re more of a visual type, Apple’s video of the keynote is now online, hit up the read link for all the non-action.

Rumor Roundup: What to Expect at Macworld Expo 2009

Macworld

Apple’s
charismatic CEO won’t be showing up to deliver his famous keynote
speech at Macworld Expo on Tuesday, but the show must go on. Wired.com
has been following the rumors and analyst reports on what to expect at
the show. Here’s a roundup of those tasty tidbits, along with our
probability estimation for each prediction coming true.

Mac_mini_2 Aluminum Mac Minis
Wired.com
learned straight from an Apple corporate employee that a new Mac Mini
is slated for announcement
at Macworld Expo. The Mini, Apple’s portable
desktop, hasn’t been upgraded since August 2007 — which is unusual,
considering Apple typically refreshes its products every six or seven
months. Other publications dug up additional details about the Mac Mini’s
specifications. In summary:

  • The enclosure will be composed of a combination of aluminum and black plastic, matching the color scheme of the latest MacBook family and iMac.
  • The system will ship with an Nvidia graphic chipset.
  • The system will ship with a SATA optical drive, which can optionally be swapped for a SATA hard drive.
  • The system’s connectivity ports include support for Mini DisplayPort, Mini DVI, FireWire 800 and USB.

Probability: 99 percent

iPhone Nano

A
third-party iPhone case manufacturer created a new category labeled
"iPhone Nano," igniting speculation that Apple will release a smaller
version of its popular handset. A purported image of the Nano case suggests
the handset is simply shorter and less wide than the original iPhone.
Our problems with this gadget: It would be extremely difficult to use
the touchscreen if its size is compromised. An iPhone Nano is a
possibility later in the future, but the evidence for a Macworld
release is thus far unsubstantiated.

Probability: 15 percent

iMac Upgrades
Imac_2
Economic
Daily News
, a Chinese publication, says component suppliers have leaked
Apple’s plans to upgrade its all-in-one desktop, the iMac. According to
the publication, the iMac will sport a magnesium-aluminum alloy
chassis
. Corroborating this report, MacRumors discovered a string of
code evidencing that new iMacs will carry an Nvidia chipset.

Probability: 90 percent

Mbp_2 17-inch MacBook Pro
APC speculates Apple will refresh the 17-inch MacBook Pro at
Macworld Expo with a unibody chassis and a low-cost, quad-core mobile
processor. The evidence? Intel quietly added a new quad-core chip to its price
list: the Core 2 Extreme Q9000 ($350), which partners four 2-GHz cores.
Also, it’s mysterious that Apple in October upgraded all the new
MacBooks except the 17-inch MacBook Pro, and January would be a good
time to announce one.

These are reasonable inferences, and AppleInsider claims it "independently confirmed" an upgrade for a 17-inch MacBook Pro would be announced. AppleInsider’s report doesn’t further the theory of a quad-core processor, but instead claims the notebook will include a fixed internal battery and an Nvidia chipset.

Probability: 75 percent

Thus far, it appears the "big deal" product at
Macworld will be the souped-up Mac Mini. That’s not awfully exciting to
us, but we look forward to an aluminum treatment for the little guy.

A
question to all the crazy Mac fanatics: Are you going to be camping out for the
keynote this year, even though Phil Schiller’s emceeing rather than
Jobs?

Leak: Palm’s New Touch Screen Nova iPhone-Alike

Palmnova
Pre-CES, the gadget blogging world has an itchy trigger-finger. Embargoes are agreed to in exchange for new product info ahead of time, allowing prompt coverage of new products as they are announced.

Embargoes are a Gentleman’s Agreement, unlike NDAs (Non Disclosure Agreements) which carry some legal weight. And here’s the problem: A blog, say, CrunchGear, might decide to run a story early to get the scoop. As it may have done with the new Palm Nova device.

Described by "a trusted source" (Palm PR flack, perhaps?), the new phone is an iPhone with a keyboard, a portrait-format touchscreen device with a slide-out QWERTY. Running the whole show is the hot new Nova OS, which is being described as "amazing".

No real surprises here. The picture you see was ‘shopped together by BoingBoing Gadgets’ Rob Beschizza, a man whose legendary pixel-pushing skills mean he can mock up a picture of his breakfast before breakfast. In fact, he may have missed his coffee this morning as the keyboard here is in the wrong orientation. He has, though, fully captured Palm’s design ennui.

We’ll see if Nova is super enough to rescue the ailing Palm. That’s the thing with touch screen phones. The software just has to be awesome.

Mac mini update with dual display support, banner unfurling rumored for Macworld festivities

We’ve got less than 48 hours until Apple’s last Macworld keynote, and the rumor mill keeps hinting that Phil’s gonna announce new Mac minis, which so far are purported to have the Macbook’s NVIDIA chipset, aluminum casing, and an SATA optical drive that can be swapped out for a second HDD. Go ahead and add dual display support to that list, which is what Apple Insider is speculating based on their sources saying the new minis will sport both a mini DisplayPort and a mini DVI connector. Additionally, the site has managed to snap some shots from the Moscone Center of the expo being set up. There’s a picture of a monitor showing what’s presumed to be a live feed of the keynote rehearsal with a blurred figure that kind of looks like Al Gore, and inside the south hall there are several mysterious banners concealed in white cloth. So pretty much status quo, though is it just us or do the banners seem to look a little tired and thin this year?

Microsoft preparing for new layoffs?

A new report from Fudzilla claims that Microsoft is getting ready to lay off 15,000 employees, or about 17% of its worldwide staff. The axe will apparently fall on January 15th, exactly one week before its second quarter earnings report, and they expect MSN division to be hit hardest, while the successful Xbox crew will probably make it out relatively unscathed. Meanwhile, an anonymous blogger who goes by the name Mini-Microsoft and claims to be an employee well-versed in the goings-on inside the company has been fielding questions from other purported Microsoft workers on recent cutback concerns. This past Monday he posted a handful of anonymous comments saying that the rumored layoffs aren’t happening — at least not in January — although a re-organization might be in the cards. Both reports should be taken with a grain of salt, but one thing’s for certain — Windows 7 is gonna rule.

Rumor: New Mac Minis Dressed in Sexy Aluminum

Mac_mini Insiders are leaking details about Apple’s rumored Mac Mini, confirming Wired.com’s earlier predictions about the device.

The Unofficial Apple Weblog cites anonymous sources who say the new Mac
Mini will sport an enclosure resembling the aluminum-and-black scheme
seen in the new MacBooks and iMacs.

Also, sources told TUAW that the Mac Mini would ship with a SATA
optical drive, which can be swapped out for a second SATA hard drive as a
customization option.

Wired.com in mid-December reported the first rumor from an insider about a new Mac Mini. An
Apple corporate employee said an upgrade to the Mac Mini will be
launched at Macworld Expo 2009.

Our source could not disclose specification details on the device, but we predicted
the Mac Mini would be composed of aluminum (and perhaps be marketed as "The greenest Mac ever"). We also guessed the rumored
Mac Mini will ship with Nvidia chipsets — which corroborates with a
MacRumors report
that discovered strings of code referring to an
unreleased Mac Mini shipping with an Nvidia chipset.

Apple rumor roundup: aluminum Mac minis and supersized iPod touches

Listen, you know the drill by now: Macworld is less than a week away, and that causes a Cupertino-sized rumor mill to fill up with hints of new / refreshed hardware of all shapes and sizes. The crew at TUAW claim they’ve heard from sources that a new Mac mini will be unveiled with an aluminum finish, a Time Capsule-esque “lip,” and a SATA optical drive that can be customized as a second HDD instead. Additionally, TechCrunch says it has three independent sources that confirm there’s a large iPod touch is coming next Fall with a 7 or 9-inch screen. There’s no indication if they expect a Macworld announcement here, but if true, we expect the cargo pants industry to react accordingly. Finally, and possibly related to the TechCrunch rumor, a Taiwan news site claims Quanta Computers is expecting to add Apple and Sony (is that you, Vaio P?) as clients for manufacturing netbooks in 2009. For those playing along at home, at some point next year we should expect a bigger iPod touch, a netbook, a smaller iPhone, a revised iMac, a revised Mac mini, and absolutely no love at all for the Mac Pro.

Rumor: Mac Tablet Coming Fall 2009

2340405846_a19ce2a5de_b
Rumors of a touchscreen tablet from Apple are gaining momentum — again.

Three independent sources close to Apple told TechCrunch that a large-screen iPod Touch is slated for a Fall of 2009 release.

The device will feature a 7- or 9-inch screen, sources told TechCrunch. One of the sources even claims holding a prototype of the tablet.

The first rumor of a Mac tablet surfaced in July at MacDailyNews. But that rumor was slightly different: Rather than describing the rumored device as a larger iPod Touch, the source said the Mac tablet would have a MacBook screen, an optical drive and run a full version of Mac OS X. The source said this device would launch October. Clearly this was an inaccurate report.

Gartner analyst Ken Dulaney said a Mac touchscreen tablet would be a logical step, since all Apple would have to do is blow up the screen of an iPod Touch and slightly tweak the software.

As always, we should take rumors with a grain of salt. But this time around — with TechCrunch’s Michael Arrington citing three sources — the fabled device has more hope.

TechCrunch did not have details on pricing for the rumored device. But we estimate the device, if real, would cost around $700 to $800 — positioning it in between the low-end MacBook ($999) and the iPod Touch ($230).
