Drama. Rather than leaving well enough alone — at least long enough for its lawyers to properly enjoy the Independence Day weekend — Apple has seemingly kicked its ongoing legal battle with Samsung up a notch. According to a filing discovered by FOSS Patents, the perturbed in Cupertino have filed a motion for a preliminary injunction with the US District Court for the Northern District of California. Interestingly, the motion hones in on just four devices: the Infuse 4G, Galaxy S 4G, Droid Charge, and Galaxy Tab 10.1. It’s a pretty bold move on Apple’s part — if this thing holds, and it’s determined that the aforesaid products may well indeed be infringing on Apple’s rights, Sammy could be forced to yank those products from US shelves within a couple of months. If it falls through, however, Apple’s entire case will likely take a serious hit. We’d ponder why everyone can’t just get along, but at this point, we’re guessing the act of forgiveness has become a foreign concept for both parties.

We’re seriously considering just reposting the same bit of text every time HTC’s earnings come up for discussion. The story never seems to change. Taiwan’s premier smartphone maker has once again blown away its performance from the previous year, having informed the Taiwan Stock Exchange that it tallied up T$40.62b ($1.42b) in consolidated sales for May 2011. That’s a neat chunk of change more than April’s T$38.73b and it also comfortably dwarfs last year’s May total of T$18.82b ($656m). There’s no breakdown of what devices are to credit for HTC’s ever-ascending revenues, but if you ask us, its future prosperity looks pretty good with the Sensation, EVO 3D, and a few tablet-shaped things lurking on the horizon.

If you work for Sony you might want go watch TV right now — there’s something on Discovery about ostriches and sand. Meanwhile, Microsoft just let us know that it’s sold 55 million Xbox 360s globally, which is very probably enough to maintain its lead over the PS3. Moreover, 360 sales in the US are still accelerating six years into its life-cycle, thanks largely to updates like Kinect — and Microsoft boasts that “no other console in history can make that claim.” Huzzah. Now, we’re not ones to snatch the pen from the victor’s hand, but remember: this claim is based on US stats, whereas the PS3 has generally been doing better in other regions. What’s more, neither the Wii nor the PS3 has yet reached its sixth birthday, so the story isn’t over. Nevertheless, the chart after the break does make Microsoft’s performance look damn impressive. Why is it that when you’re down, life just keeps on kicking?

Don’t expect a lawsuit or two to keep a good chaebol down. Not if J.K. Shin has his way. The president of Samsung’s mobile communication division is telling us to expect an “enhanced” LTE Galaxy Tab (without providing any detail) sometime later this year, following the launch of the company’s 8.9-inch Tab this summer and 10.1-inch Tab next month — the latter priced between $499 and $599. Shin said that Samsung is already in talks with US and South Korean carriers to launch the 4G tablet. He also teased a third version of the wildly popular Galaxy S handset series for the first half of 2012. A proclamation arriving on news that the delectable Galaxy S II has just set a record for the fastest selling smartphone in Korea after unloading one million handsets in the first month of domestic sales.

Naturally, Shin also had a bit to say about Samsung’s ongoing legal battle with Apple. “We didn’t copy Apple’s design,” he said bluntly, adding that Apple’s allegations “will not be legally problematic.” Sure Sammy, tell it to the judge.

Update: The Wall Street Journal updated its story calling for the 8.9-inch Galaxy Tab to launch this summer, not in June as originally stated.

We were expecting Toshiba to launch its Windows 7 tablet during the second half of this year, but rumor has it that the company may be abandoning the slate altogether. DigiTimes is reporting that both the 11.6-inch slab and a forthcoming Chromebook have disappeared from Toshiba’s product launchpad, according to sources within the industry. The Chromebook will reportedly be slashed due to disappointing netbook sales in 2010, whereas the reasons behind the tablet’s cancellation remain less clear. DigiTimes suggests that Toshiba may be throwing all of its weight behind its new Honeycomb-powered Thrive slate, meaning that its Windows 7 counterpart could either be delayed even further, or simply relinquished. There’s obviously plenty of speculation swirling around, but we’ll let you know as soon as we receive more concrete reports.
